Beetlejuice Car Rental Purgatory at HNL Very disappointed with my Dollar/Thrifty rental car experience at the HNL CONRAC. I had a reservation for April 20 with a 12:00 PM pickup and had already checked in online the night before, but that did not seem to help at all. After picking up my luggage, I got in line at the Dollar counter around 12:30 PM, with at least 60 people ahead of me. It took about two hours just to reach the service counter. After that, I was given a card and told to go downstairs to the first-level pickup area, where I had to wait another hour before the car was ready. The whole process felt like Beetlejuice car rental purgatory -- slow, surreal, and completely uncaring. Dollar/Thrifty may be cheaper compared to other rental companies, but be prepared to be ignored and stand in a mind-numbing line for three hours or eternity, whichever ends first. No apology, no explanation, and no sense of urgency from the staff at any point. Others before and after me were clearly going through the same painful experience. Meanwhile, I did not see the same long lines or wait times at other rental counters in the HNL CONRAC. Someday we may all have to wait in line at purgatory... so you might as well start practicing your patience at the Dollar HNL CONRAC. I went ahead and did my rental through Priceline When I went to kuaui another island. I used a different rental place and it was such a great experience. They made sure to text me directions. Let me know who would be picking me up from the airport exactly how to get there all that good stuff. It was really easy In-N-Out. However, coming here, I had to Google and look up a bunch of stuff. I was unsure of the location did not know how to get there. We ended up walking through the whole entire airport not knowing we could've took a shuttle from one to the other. We stopped in the middle of the airport. I went ahead and decided to go ahead and check it online. I was like oh this will be faster. There was no line inside that said hey if you already checked in, no it was a super long wait. All of that is fine you're on vacation. You tend to just go ahead and let things slide. I didn't understand the process of having a way of checking in early or on your nap. If they weren't gonna take that information we had to give it all over again. That line was so long and stuff was walking away and I just feel like there should be a process of one person saying hey did you already do this process? Have you already uploaded your ID? Did you already put your credit card information in because those people should be able to go ahead. The car we got I would have to ask my husband to find out exactly what it was. It was very clean inside very nice. However it had so many blind spots. I told my husband I would not drive the car. I was easily able to hook my phone up to it to play music, which was OK Usually, when you get in, they'll have some preset music so that way you know what stations to listen to in the area you're at I would say they just really need to do a better job with direction even telling you where to go when you walk out to go get your car is not a very good directions. I think the employees could do a much better job. They also can make you feel better about waiting in line and how long it's gonna take. I feel as though if you have somebody that has all these extra questions you let them sit to the side and help the next person cause some people just like to chitchat and that is great. It's awesome. Find out where we're coming from all this great stuff, but some people do not know when to stop talking and that's kind of up to the staff to change the direction of that. So for me, I'd definitely will not be wanting to use dollar cart rental on my next trip, but it was easy coming to drop it off. I will say not much direction on how to get out and where to go catch your bus to get back to where you needed to get to the airport so once again just communication if we work on that, it would definitely be a great process read more

Wait times to recieve your vehicle are horrendous. I didn't realize that the car rental place I chose, was just as important as other reservations I made while staying in Waikiki. I usually do my due diligence, but completely dropped the ball on this one. You know how they say, "You get what you pay for?" This definitely runs true with Dollar rental, being that they had the lowest rates on line. I paid dearly with the time it took to get my vehicle - almost two hours! It seems as though this business has ben conducting business like this for YEARS! How can a business with enough single star reviews to fill the Milky Way, stay in business after all this time you ask? It was obvious while waiting, watching, and thinking (I had A LOT of time to think!) Out of the approximate 12 windows that they had only TWO were manned at a time. Only two employees to help a line that resembled the line at the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland on a Saturday afternoon. Yeah, too many people to count! So it's obvious they're grossly under staffed and even if they did have every window open, guess what? You'd be waiting downstairs in the parking lot, on a really uncomfortable bench (if you were lucky enough to find a spot on a bench), for a vehicle that either wasn't ready or simply wasn't there. Bottom line is this company has been cutting corners for years profiting on unknowing victims like myself, and will probably continue to do so. They continue to be under staffed and over booked. They actually sent me an email asking how they did.‍ I was blunt and made it clear that I was NOT a happy camper. Their response? Nada. Nothing. Zilch. So now THAT was more wasted time as well. I returned our rental car on April 10. I went up to the dollar/thrifty rental counter and spoke with an agent. The agent was very helpful and figured out that it was an honest mistake and corrected the charges. The agent explained that since I paid for gas ahead of time, the person at the exit, when I originally picked up the rental car, inserted $100 fuel charge in the wrong cell (vehicle upgrade box), which added $800 plus another $97 for tax and concessions. The agent also said that if this was a shady transaction, he would've rained hellfire on whoever did it. Despite being in the line, everything else was good. The rep was very helpful in choosing my vehicle. I ended up paying for my reservation ahead of time but upgraded when I got there based off the reps recommendations. Aside from the wait, everything else was great. I had to change my rental from 4 days to 2 days which they processed for me then proceeded to charge me for the first 4 day rental in addition to the two day rental. I called the company to discuss the charge and they were rude and aggressive. I thought I reviewed all possible RAC businesses at HNL but I guess not! Hotwire is my go-to site for RAC's which is how we ended up here. EXPERIENCE: Catch the generically-named Rental Car Shuttle as any of them will take you to the RAC facility. The 8am hour on a Saturday was a beautiful time to arrive as there was no one in line. I was in an out in five minutes. The female agent seemed unfriendly at first but turned for the better as time went on (I'd probably be stoic too having to deal with assholes all day long). No high-pressure upselling of category or insurance, just bing, bang, boom - exactly how I like it! We headed down to the first floor for our rental. The male associate scurried out from his post and walked me to the staging area. He told me to "Take the gray Camaro". We got a gray 2020 Camaro SS with 32K miles on it with bald tires. I didn't think RAC companies kept cars this old but everything was in working order sans for numerous dings and scratches. Driving this thing was like driving in a coffin. The windshield is so small, the dash high and roofline low. But, it had a great exhaust note when firing up thought came with horrible MPG's. Return was smooth and quick. I've never had to wait this long to get a car. Returning the rental was easy. They seem to have a variety of cars and I got a KIA, my least favorite. The entire rental car process was smooth sailing. The exact location of this main location at HNL airport is easy to find and the staff are very friendly. The car rental daily rates were affordable. All the costs on the invoice were explained clearly to me by the clerk when I was picking up the car. The rental car itself was clean, new, and well taken care of. HNL International Airport + Two counter agents were great - 4 hours after renting the car (@10:30 pm), I got a low coolant message and high temp signal with indicator near the H - Couldn't find the number to the airport counter so I called their roadside assistance # - Was advised to pull over as soon as possible to avoid damage to the vehicle and injury to passengers (I had my daughter and 6 yo granddaughter with me) - Pulled over in a sketch area in a fast food parking lot 1.6 miles from the rental car return - Said they could arrange a rideshare back to the airport and arrange the tow. Average wait time for tow is 60-90 min. - I said that I don't want to be standing with my daughter and granddaughter after midnight in a parking lot so the rideshare and tow need to be synced with each other. It's not safe. - I was told that I did not need to wait for thr tow and could leave the car unlocked with the keys under the seat and just catch the rideshare to get a new vehicle......but I would also be liable if anything happens to the vehicle before it gets towed. - I asked if I could lock the car with the keys inside (some cars don't permit this) and was told I'd be charged a lock out fee because the tow company would need to retrieve the keys. - Told the agent that these are not good choices for a car that was poorly maintained and causing me this inconvenience - safety or liability, what the heck! - After calling my husband, throwing up some prayers, and contemplating, I decided to drive the car the 1.6 miles to turn it in. - Gave the counter agents the case # he provided and they didn't see it in the system. But they still helped me swap out the vehicle. I cannot believe the options I was provided. Oh, and the agent said the counter closes at midnight, so if I waited for the tow, I would have been stranded with no car until the counter reopened the following day. $1 (Dollar) worth of customer service. Overall the experience was a good one. I would have given 5 stars if management would have more than 2 clerks checking people in. An additional clerk came after a while, but she left after helping 3 people. Took about half an hour to get to the check in counter. What a crappy company. I purchased via Priceline. They refused to add the spouse as an additional driver without an extra cost unlike Budget or Enterprise. My husband is on my credit card as an authorized user but we did not bring his credit card which left us adding myself as a primary and paying for my husband as a secondary driver. I opted in a compact car and prepaid fuel and was quoted $60 for the fuel. However, upon checkout , which btw took over 3 hours (!), we were given an Infinity Q80 and now the prepaid fuel charge is $125!!! We are leaving tomorrow and there is still half a tank of gas left. I would have been okay with a smaller car and leaving $20-$30 but not with over $60. The total cost for two days is over $285!!! $75 via Priceline, $39 for protection that should have covered additional fee to add another driver (but agent refused to honor it), $45 for secondary driver and $125 for prepaid fuel. Do yourself a favor and rent your car somewhere else when you come to Oahu. No line at the upstairs counter, but then... you go to the downstairs counter and there's a crowd of people, not in line, but just standing there waiting for their car to be brought out. It's a pretty sad looking group of people who were probably all ecstatic to have recently arrived in hawaii, but Dollar has managed to crush their souls. The employees don't care. They move in slow motion as they bring cars out about one every five minutes or so. In the end, it took a little over an hour for them to bring our car out (there were ~20 ahead of us - could you imagine a valet that took 1 hour to bring out 20 cars?!?!). While we were waiting, I had some time to read the other reviews and at least we didn't have to wait 2-3 hours like some other folks.... Anyways, you've been warned. read more

They only get one star because that's the lowest I can give them. Honolulu Dollar (and Thrifty) are horrible. Don't spend the first two hours of you vacation trying to get a car. Pay a little more and go elsewhere. The line is HUGE and SLOW and there are only a few attendants. After you get your "contract" you have to go downstairs and wait another 1 1/2 hours minutes to get a car. Arrived and rental was not ready. Business was in absolute chaos. Was told to go to staging area to receive vehicle and there was no vehicle available. I pre-paid through one of Dollar's 3rd party support businesses. I was told they would cancel the reservation and reserve at a lower rate for the trouble. Once I returned they did not honor the lower rate nor did they honor the rate provided by their 3rd party partner. I paid more for the rental than contracted because they didn't honor 3rd party quotes pre-paid. Apparently they add on additional charges that are not part of the 3rd party contract. After a long discussion with onsite personnel and managers, I left paying more than what I was contracted to pay for the rental. In the flurry of the return, I left the keys for the vehicle in my bag. At check-in the attendant didn't ask for the keys and I forgot they were in my bag. In my experience the attendant always asks for the key at check-in. I called and let them know I would ship the key back to them within 2-3 days. Dollar charged us $250 immediately for the key, to be reimbursed 4-6 weeks later once the key was returned. All-in-all a bad experience that didn't need to happen. We stood in line to rent our car for an hour,and 15 minutes only 4 agents were working ( as fast as they could, they were working hard) with a line of people out the door . , then they send you downstairs to sit on a few benches * again the same amount of people working and customers are told to sit 60 to 90 minutes to wait for a car.... only a few benches are available, so lots of people were sitting on the garage floor. It took 2 hours to finally get a vehicle. There were several vehicles just sitting but they wouldn't give those out. Approximately 100 people were waiting for cars. The rental facility at the airport is a nightmare. read more
