I think what the organization is doing to save these pups is amazing. I'm sure they are lovely to adopt from, but my review is specifically based on my own experience... being that I couldn't adopt from them, despite being in a loving couple with a nice home who adore dogs. I have been following Dogs Without Borders for a year now on Instagram. I keep telling my boyfriend how in love I am with every picture they post, and how when we're ready, we're going to definitely adopt from THEM! Now that it's the new year, we were ready, and I had been so excited to engage with this organization. We went to an adoption fair at PetSmart, and it was fine. The dogs were in little pet pens. Unfortunately, not all the dogs you see on their web site are there. The environment itself didn't really lend itself well to getting to know each dog, as there were about 3-4 in each pet pen. It's not any fault of anyone, since it's a challenge anywhere to really get to know a shelter dog. Maybe the Tailwaggers fair is better! Because of this experience, I thought it better to put in the application as suggested on their website to officially engage with them, and see what options there could be. I highlighted dogs whom i would be interested in meeting, and the characteristics i was looking for, hoping we can start a dialogue. I would be happy to visit the fosters to get to know the dog and go out of my way to meet them, if they can't come to the adoption fair. I heard nothing back. I waited over a week, checked my spam, nothing. They said they would respond, even if an application was rejected... although i see no reason ours would be rejected. Broke my heart since i was so in love with this organization. Long story short, i cared more about finding our new best friend and i didn't want to waste my time begging for them to look at my application. I contacted Wags and Walks and they responded and called me the following day letting me know about pups who would best fit in with us. Their location is open every day so you can actually meet them and get to know them. Another organization which i absolutely love is Annenberg PetSpace, which is where we found our baby. They have high tech facilities where you can get to know the dog, numerous kind staff, and the ability to get to meet the dog in a number of little grass areas. They took the time to get to know us, and they also spent time letting us get to know everything about our baby boy before we took him home. Process only took an hour or so, and we had a new member of our family! Didn't hurt that the adoption fee was only 80 bucks. I'm sure Dogs without Borders is an amazing organization, but for those who want a better, more organized adoption experience, i just wanted to share my story. read more

I found my best doggie friend through DWB. I found Gus on pet finder and filled out the application to adopt him on DWB website. I had also applied for several other dogs, because it's LA and adopting dogs is quite a process, I didn't know which ones I would actually hear back from. I ended up getting a call from DWB a couple days later, saying they liked my application and asking if I wanted to foster to adopt. It was a little overwhelming bc I was expecting to meet him first but I was obsessed with how sweet he looked so I said yes. Basically you get to foster the dog for a week and get all the supplies for free, and then you can decide to keep him or not. Gus is literally pretty much the perfect dog. He's calm, never barks at people, rarely barks at Dogs, he loves cuddling, and he's really well housetrained! He has one issue - separation anxiety but I'm working on that. I really love my new family member and am thankful that DWB helped me find him! read more

Usually I don't write bad reviews, but this experience deserves a call out. I've been fostering a few times for DWB, as and all of the times have been great, until this last one. They had a plea out for a mom and her 3 puppies (and they were absolutely great, especially mom whom bonded with me a great deal) I was told that they were 5 weeks old and I figured that they were on solids then... Now, my dog had a litter of unexpected puppies once, 8 puppies in total, and I remembered from back then, how to care for them etc, and decided to apply. I was accepted, and the mom and pups was dropped off a few hours later! I was told that mom was still nursing, that she should stay enclosed with puppies, and that she would take care of everything. From the time she entered she didnt show much interest in the puppies, which made sense because they were 5 weeks old, she wouldn't nurse them either, and DWB had provided me with 5 cans of food for 3 weeks (but they said that they were going to provide EVERYTHING, right?!) And any sane person with a little bit of knowledge of dogs (specifically nursing bitches) knows that a mom dog cannot live off of 1 can of food a day, so I went ahead and stocked up on puppy food for mom and babies. When I wrote DWB with my concerns (that puppies needed food and mom wouldn't nurse) they replied that I had to make sure that she stayed enclosed (road to disaster) and that the puppies had to nurse.. I went ahead and gave the puppies solids and they were starving, and I started giving mom food 4× a day and she too was starving. Mom had also not been seeing a vet since she came over here, and her nails was miles long which resulted in her breaking off a nail by the root of the nail and she bled all over my floor, I too wrote DWB that, and all of the sudden they needed to pick up the puppies and mom to go to the vet and they would bring them back (I am not dumb, i knew that that was just a bad excuse because I voiced that they were doing something wrong) they said that they would come back the day after and I waited for hours before seeing that mom and pups was posted for fostering AGAIN, without letting me know.. I wrote foster coordinator Chloe and she responded immediately that she was keeping the puppies and mom because it was too far, I then told her that she had posted them for fostering again and she wrote "it was just in case someone could hold them over the weekend". To DWB: If you don't know how to handle puppies, please don't take them in... I risked by following your advice that mom would attack the puppies because she felt caught, I would have been held reliable for that while your hands would've been free! 2: don't tell your fosters that you're going to come back and then never respond, I have two small kids and I was waiting till 3 pm until I got an answer ONLY because I called Chloe out on posting them for fostering AGAIN. I am going to submit this to LA Animal Control as well as here. From now on I am going to stick with fostering for LA Animal Services, they at least have the education and knowledge about dogs and isn't just an organization for PROFIT. read more

They spent many hours interviewing us, which seemed frustrating at the time, but they ended up finding a dog to fit us better than we though we knew for ourselves! I had a wonderful experience with Dogs Without Borders. I came across a listing for a puppy that fit everything I was going for. I sent in an application and two days later they asked that I conduct a phone interview to see if I was a good fit. I was approved, and three days later I took home my perfect puppy. The whole process happened in less than a week. They were also prompt in getting us Finley's vaccination records. We just adopted a Dogs Without Borders Chihuahua-Daschund Mix. The process was very smooth. Starts with an online adoption application. We filed it on a Saturday and had a response on Monday. An online interview took place Tuesday. The dog was brought to our home on Thursday for a one week trial period. I emailed a daily report of her acclimation progress during the trial period. I read many of the FAQ documents on their website which explained a lot about the process, how to care for dogs, and recommended trainers, foods and other things. She fit in beautifully and we finalized the adoption today. She came with a crate, blankets, two toys and a huge bag of Acuna kibble. These did not have to be returned upon finalizing the adoption. They do a good job asking adopters questions to make sure it's a good fit. But the adoption counselor was condescending and judgemental only because our furs kids (large working breeds with high energy and high prey drive) are e-collar trained professionally at thousands of dollars. If it's so bad, it wouldn't be legal, and law enforcement wouldn't use it. It's OK to turn us down due to different beliefs in training methodologies. But no excuse to insinuate we abuse our fur babies when they've never met them. If we're bad owners and don't love them, we wouldn't invest so much money on professional training so they could be the best version of themselves. Plus the enormous efforts and time spent on consistent mental stimulation and exercise. Super excited to go to their fair today. I was coming from Long Beach and drove all the way to Hollywood. I get there and look at the puppy I was interested in, asked one of the workers about m application. She looked at then instantly said, "Oh you rent. Sorry, we don't adopt puppies out to people who rent. They need to own." I am sure this was referencing space for a puppy, but still seemed ver discriminating. I would have given the puppy the world. Given all my love to her and been able to have a companion. I left right after disappointed and sad. My renting or owning does not dictate whether I would love a puppy less than someone else or provide less. She didn't even ask how my apartment layout was or if I had are space or anything. My complex has its own doggy play area and is pet friendly, would have been no issue for the puppy. read more

I adopted a puppy back in June of 2019 by going to the adoption event they held at Tailwaggers in Hollywood. It was an extremely long process due to the huge number of people adopting puppies and all the questions they ask. After paying $420 dollars for Dusty, I was promised I would receive his vaccination record once they conducted a house visit and the official adoption papers once he turned 6 months and was neutered. Three weeks passed, they visited and said they would email me the documents. A month passed since the visit and I received nothing. I called, sent emails and all I heard was crickets. I decided to go back to Tailwaggers to request the documents in person. Again, I was told I would receive them via email. That never happened. I ended up taking Dusty to a vet and got all his shots and dewormer done since groomers won't take dogs without their vaccination record. Something Dogs Without Boarders claim you payment includes (first round of shots, microchip and neuter). Dusty turned 6 months and I received a call requesting that I set up the appt for the neuter. I advised them that Fridays and weekends worked best for us. A few days passed and I was informed those dates weren't available and that my appt would be set for Monday, mind you it was Friday evening. With such short notice, there was no way I could take time off of work, I emailed the volunteer back to let him know. A few days passed and I received an email claiming that I had not responded to any of their attempts to schedule a neuter appt. and would be contacted by a Dogs Without Borders Manager making it seem as if he would be taken away for not cooperating. Needlees to say, we eventually got Dusty to the neuter location only to find out they had no documentation for the neuter. After several calls to the volunteer and the volunteer contacting the neuter place Dusty was finally neutered. We were let down by Dogs Without Borders again as they failed to provide the protective bowl colar or medication they said we would receive. However, the nurse was kind enough to provide it even though she was not supposed to. With all the issues I was having with Dogs Without Border I emailed the volunteer to provide me the contact information for the manager. When I spoke to her she apologized profusely for all the confunsion and said that as soon as I emailed proof of the neuter I would receive the adoption documents and information to update Dusty's microchip. I received an email over 2 months later indicating that I had to log onto a website and follow the prompts to finalize the adoption. I did, but I never received any official documents nor any information to update the microchip. Sadly, Dusty ran off this morning and was found by a good person who took him to a vet. Only to find out the chip did not have any information associated to me or Dog Without Borders. If it wasn't for the person posting a found dog flyer in the neighborhood, Dusty would not be home today. This foundation has been a huge disappointment. Their lack of customer service and inability to provide the documents they promised almost cost our family our beloved pet. If you decide to adopt through this foundation, please ask for legitimate contact info and demand they provide what they promise and what you pay for. read more

My husband and I adopted the most wonderful dog for us: small enough to pick up, cute, sweet, and very trainable. Our dear Rocky passed away a few months ago and, after taking a bit of a break, felt ready to adopt a rescue. Our experience with DWB has been very positive and we highly recommend them and applaud the work they do. The organization is run by volunteers so, as a few reviewers have mentioned, the process takes a bit of time and patience and communications were mostly through email (no phone calls). The DWB doesn't have a facility to visit and all the dogs are fostered in caring homes until ready for adoption. We heard about Riley (he was recovering from surgery and just posted as ready to be adopted) and filled out an application online. From the DWB website we found out about the very next adoption event and showed up early. We got a chance to meet the staff and especially Chloe, the executive director. She interviewed us and when Riley arrived we got a chance to interact with him. The foster parent gave a lot of information about temperament, house training, etc. We were approved to take Riley on a one week trial basis. We knew right away he had found his permanent home. At the end of the week the foster-to-adopt mentor (a resource person if you have problems) contacted us and we made it official. Next we were sent a contract to sign and then paid the fee. It did take a while to get his records but DWB staff were responsive. A slow, yes, but nonetheless well run organization I highly recommend to find a great rescue dog. read more

I told them I was interested in a rescue they had on their site and within 3 days, I was fostering that rescue. They allow a week to foster for a lot of reasons. For us, we had to make sure my daughter was not allergic. They provided everything we needed including a crate, bed, blankets, toys, and food. Needless to say, we adopted our awesome little guy and we couldn't be happier. The entire experience was top notch and if I rescue again, I will only go through them. I have been trying to adopt a pup here in LA for almost two months, and am SO happy I ended up adopting from DWB. They were easy to get ahold of and transparent about whether certain dogs I expressed interest in would be a good match for me and my living situation. What I found most impressive about DWB is how much information they have on their website. Other LA rescues don't provide anything at all! DWB has detailed info about fostering, training, feeding, grooming--everything a new dog owner might need! On top of that, everyone I interacted with was incredibly kind and helpful. During my one week adoption trial, a foster mentor reached out to me twice to discuss how things were going and offer advice, which was helpful. I was also able to contact her should anything have come up during that time. And they did a great job of making the adoption as safe as possible, given COVID-19. I'm so happy with my sweet pup and with my DWB experience! Definitely recommend them to anyone looking to adopt. read more

The WORST experience!! Not going into all the details because it was such a shit show to adopt our girl through them. Vet told us based on a dental exam that she was 8 weeks old. DWB wanted us to spay her immediately, our vets advised this should not happen until 6 months. We were able to put it off until she was four or five months against our vet recommendation but under A TON of pressure from this Galit woman claiming she knows more about dogs than our VETRANARIAN! We were told once this was done and they had her new records we would never hear from them again. Cut to now, she is nine months old and now DWB is harassing us for a home visit. According to the state laws of CA she is our dog and they have no reason to be harassing us at this point. They have caused a lot of stress for us and the relationship is contentious. They need to leave us alone at this point. read more

I have many rescue friends, they always send me some animals to help find them homes. I have had dogs my entire life. When I tried to adopt a couple dogs from dogs without borders, I was denied for the reason that I leave my dogs outside. Which is a LIE. My dogs use outside to go to the bathroom and to get a little fresh air. For the most part. My dogs are with me. I feed them healthy food and they have beds, pillows and blankets. They are really spoiled. So when I filled out the application, it took forever to get a response and when I did I was denied for a made up lie by them. I've read other reviews after this and there are more reviews like mine. Dogs without borders is not a good place. They treat their animals like prisoners and lock them in cages. They say it on their ads for the dogs. And they are really discriminatory. They pick based on what they actually want. Not for the best home for the dog. They should shut their doors and leave rescue up to the professionals who actually care. Oh. And I have reach out to them multiple times with zero response from them. I have heard the experiences from people they have dealt with. They all say that they are very bad. P.s. I have an email from them with their reason for denial and it has my application attached I may add to this just to show proof. They seem to lash out at people for their reviews. read more

I filled out numerous applications online with no response for different dogs for months on end. Finally, I guess I had emailed the right person. She said we needed to set up a phone interview. When I did that, I specified what exactly I was looking for in a dog. She then told me to head to the next adoption event that weekend. The adoption event was utter chaos and NONE of the numerous dogs I had expressed interest in were present. I guess the fosters decide whether they want to bring the dog or not... I met one dog I thought might be a match and talked a bit with the Foster Coordinator. I expressed interest in speaking more with his foster and in having additional meet and greets-in a situation that was less stressful for me AND less stressful for the dog. The answer I got was that, they could give my information to the foster, but they weren't obligated to contact me. They also said they wouldn't hold the dog for me and if I wanted him I had to take him on the spot, which is strange because one question of their application is "Can you take a dog now or do you need a week to prepare?" What is the purpose of this question if it's not really an option? I waited around to try and discuss more details with other workers there, but they were so busy adopting out dogs, they didn't notice. In addition, I had filled out all this paperwork and done the phone interview and it seemed like most people just adopted dogs on the spot. What was the point of even applying in advance if that dog could just be adopted the next day by someone who hadn't even applied yet? It was overly stressful (for humans and animals) and a waste of time. I don't think they are truly committed to matching animals with the right person, they are simply adopting them out immediately without being true to the process promoted on their website. read more

My wife and I tried to rescue two yorkie females (8 & 10 years old and had to stay together) and after filling out the application and paying $10.00 we were told we don't live in LA County so couldn't adopt them. We were willing to drive the 2 hours to pick them up and were happy to give them a loving home even though they were way past puppies. They DON'T live up to their name and they DO have borders!
