Twelve years ago my wife learned of a cocker spaniel that Camp Cocker was trying to find a forever home. He was Sweet Pea from Tennessee and had been transported to California by a team of dedicated pet loving volunteers. We met him a short time there after and we adopted him. We named him Teddy. He was young and got along with our other senior rescues. He was a good boy despite a few skirmishes with our male dogs. His last 7 years has been lived as the senior member of our canine family consisting of Teddy and three terrier females. They all loved Teddy and they kept him young at heart. Sadly today, Teddy crossed the Rainbow Bridge with the help of our vet, Dr. Pershing at the La Canada Pet Clinic. We will miss our little man, my muchacho, my wife's Boo but we are better humans for having this cocker spaniel who survived a vicious attack in Tennessee in our lives. We thank Camp Cocker and all the people who lent their hands and time in rescuing him and bringing to California and us. I had a very poor experience trying to adopt Cece (aka Celeste). After watching her story since May 2024, we fell in love with her, but waited to apply to give others a chance to own a great dog. Fast forward to 1.5 hrs later she still hasn't been adopted nor do they promote her on social media. Every dog deserves a forever home so we decided to open our hearts and wallets to adopt her, only to be met with a solid No and good luck with another rescue or shelter. We did not even get a phone meeting, or decent explanation (which I will try to attach email response here). This dog has been available to adopt for a year and a half and no one qualifies? Hmmm...your website says you get hundreds of applicants each week. Why are you holding onto this dog and others like Hershey so long? Poor Cece hasn't had any social media advertising since may of 2024. Which pulled at my heart to adopt her. If you look at the IG and TikTok pages, it's full of dogs that have medical needs to guilt trip you into donating. Not promoting actual dogs that have been sitting waiting over a year to find a home. Maybe it's the $820,000 of donations last year that make them want to keep dogs longer that necessary to plead for more money. Or president and founder Cathy's $89,000 paycheck as the president (yes I did look into your 990 tax form!) Is it really about finding a forever home and working with people to prepare them and their homes to adopt or the paycheck % they get from each donation? I'm starting to lose faith in humanity the more I research these "rescues". So before Cathy Stanley come one here to passive-aggressively deny this or say I was not qualified to adopt as she emailed me "Not a match for Cece's needs as they align with your own specifications and preference." Excuse me? Come again? If they "align" with my specifications and preference how is that not a match? A quick background on me...20yrs experience with cocker spaniels and dog rehabilitation. I'm a Tax and financial advisor who works from home. I am literally 24/7 at home with my dogs and elderly mom. I have 2other happy confident cockers same age who could help her assimullate to her new home. We have almost 8,000 sft lot, both front and back yard are fenced, 2dog runs, 4baby gates, and motion sensor cameras watching every inch inside and out. "Cecelia is a an expert escape risk and high anxiety dog" as they state per the website. I doubt she could escape my yard unless she dug a tunnel under a brick wall. We were met with No, not a match... not let's see what we can do to make Cece safe and happy in your home. Not even a phone call to explain the reasons why my home isn't good enough. Not even an option to adopt a different dog like Muffin and her cat companion. I would take the cat and dog pair but was told to look elsewhere sadly. There are 15 dogs available and I'm not a match for any of them? Seems fishy so I started investigating the financials... it's seems like a for profit instead of non-profit organization. Why adopt out a dog for $500 when you can hold them longer and plead for money saying no one wants to step up and adopt and rake in over $800,000 per year? read more

Cathy Stanley takes in approximately $700,000-$800,000 in donations annually, according to Charitynavigator.com, who give her Camp Cocker Rescue 2 stars. I, along with a few friends, have been donating. From her IG posts/website, it appears she takes in approximately 25-40 dogs a year. I have had cockers my entire life, love the breed. So after losing my boy last year at age 14, I decided to fill out an application to adopt (not shop) at this organization I've been supporting. Stanley has an extensive questionnaire. It's what she refers to as Step 1. According to her website, Step 2 is a phone interview. Step 3 a home safety check. She states over and over that her "priority is to make the best match" and she "puts the applicant first." So imagine my surprise when , after spending hours filling out the application, I was emailed a form rejection letter (like many others who've posted here) within 24 hours. No phone interview. No home visit. The form email stated they were unable to make a match "based on your specifications and preferences" and they "did not have any dogs that met my criteria." Huh?! My specifications: Cocker spaniel My preferences: 0-7 yrs in age, boy The response made zero sense to me so I emailed, "wow, you have got to be kidding; which specification/preferences exactly?" Silence. I emailed again, "Don't have time to let me know?" Silence. While waiting, I found the reviews here where she gives the specific reason to Yelpers she's dismissed. I emailed again, "I see you respond on Yelp so I will Yelp." You guessed it. A response... A shocking, insulting, passive-aggressive one at that (and let me just say up front, I had previously inquired about whether Nikki, an untrained 2-yr old, pulled on her leash and was cat-friendly (never got the answers). I did not ask to be considered for Nikki. I was, however, expecting Step 2, the phone interview, to figure out which dog would be the "best match" for me, the applicant, because I do have a cat and this is what I understood the process would be per Stanley's website. And here's the kicker, not even 36-hours after getting their generic rejection email, Stanley posted an available, "cat-friendly" cocker on her IG.). Stanley's Response: You WERE told why we don't have a match for you. Please read the correspondence you were sent from our volunteers who screen applicants. You need a cat friendly dog and Nikki is not cat friendly.  The cocker spaniel breed in general is known to have a high prey drive.   You are welcome to post on Yelp as it gives me a wonderful opportunity to respond to you there publicly, so that the general public can learn more about how our priority is to please the applicants to make sure we have a MATCH for them.   Adopting a dog to you that we know would not meet your expectations would have been doing a great disservice to you. We have been nothing but polite and professional towards you and sadly, your behavior has been rude and entitled.   You can adopt a dog from literally anywhere else, anywhere.   Sometimes we can't always get what we want, but it only means that there is another dog that is meant to be yours. What a gift it is that you are showing us that we made the right choice to not place a mismatched dog with you.  If you are this disgruntled now, we cannot imagine how enraged you would be if we adopted Nikki to you and she was unable to meet your expectations.  Thank you so much for your wonderful support of animal rescue! Much appreciation, Cathy Stanley Camp Cocker Rescue, founder I was not rude. I didn't call her names. I was merely persistent because a) this both saddened & baffled me a great deal b) her email is generic as to the reason for the dismissal and c) she posted an available "cat-friendly" dog a minute later, which was suspicious. In response to Stanley's email above, I explained she clearly misunderstood, as I was not applying for Nikki. Only she knew which dogs were cat-friendly! I even thanked her for listening. Did she apologize for ass-u-me-ing wrong resulting in a flippant review of my application and calling me "rude" and "entitled" and offer to start anew? No. She went on IG, replied to my comment (that she had denied a great applicant because she had a cat only to then post a cat-friendly dog was in need of a home), and then blocked me. Stanley states her goal is to please the applicants. This is clearly a ruse. She could have simply emailed me or picked up the phone to say, "Nikki is not cat-friendly but we have x, y & z who are." If she wants adopters to understand how her "priority is to please the applicants," if she really cared about finding the pups homes, then she should take the time to interview the candidates via phone in order to make "the best match" possible instead of focusing all of her time begging people for more money. I adopted a dog from Camp Cocker (Goose) in early 2023 and it was a top notch experience. Cathy and Erin were both super helpful and it was clear how much they cared for the dogs they rescue! Erin picked up my dog after he was hit by a car and had a broken leg in the Riverside animal hospital where he was placed on the euthanasia list. He was then put through surgery by Camp Cocker and now he's in perfect shape- you would never even know he had a broken leg. He was given a second chance at life by the generosity of Camp Cocker and now my life is changed as well. My wife and I adopted a cocker spaniel mix from Camp Cocker about 9 months ago. The adoption experience was wonderful. Besides the application documentation, Camp Cocker conducted an extensive zoom meeting with both of us to make we would be a good fit for the emancipated dog we had chosen to adopt. I would recommend this organization if you are looking to adopt. They take dogs in the worst situations and do everything that it takes to find them great homes. Sadly, most adopters have so many unnecessary requirements looking for perfect dogs that would be 'convenient' for them and I wish people realize all dogs deserve good loving homes no matter their circumstances and be more accommodating to their natural behaviors. Regardless, Camp Cocker accommodates their prospects but also genuinely cares about their pups that I am so appreciative of their rigorous application process. This should tell you that they do not just care about raising funds, they actually make sure the dogs end up in a home they truly deserve. We went through the screening process and they were very straightforward and honest about Mateo whom we adopted back in May. Mateo is a flight risk and so he even came with a tracker and reiterated how important it is for us to keep an eye on him and not get too comfortable letting him run loose. He's an angel and we couldn't be any happier that he's now home with us. Camp Cocker also made the process go smoothly while making sure we are the right parents for Mateo and their foster accommodated meeting us halfway to pick him up. And to this day they are still checking in to make sure he's doing well. I highly recommend this place and encourage you to also donate when you can. We are so thankful to have found this rescue. We had been looking to adopt a dog for a few months, and quickly learned not all rescues were the same. We thought we had found a perfect match for us at another LA rescue, but they had a "first come first adopt" process and when someone showed up 20 minutes before us, they adopted the dog to that family! What?! A good rescue should be matching dogs to a family's lifestyle to make the BEST match, not just the first match, and luckily, Camp Cocker does it right! It is clear with their adoption application and phone interview that they are looking to make a forever match, not just get rid of dogs from their care. We were so impressed with Camp Cocker's thorough adoption process, we asked if we could start volunteering for the rescue. Since it is a TRUE non profit, they only have volunteers (no pay whatsoever going to anyone) we wanted to pay it forward for another family looking for their match. Camp Cocker is an incredible rescue dedicated to saving and rehabbing Cocker Spaniels that are given up to shelters or found as strays. They often rescue other breeds as well. No dog scares Camp Cocker. They take on challenging dogs that need a lot of medical rehab and go to great lengths to raise funds and take care of these sweet doggies and then find the right home. Yelp doesn't allow users to respond to the business owner's reply so I'm starting another, still one star, review. Cathy, you said I was looking for a dog that doesn't bark. Perhaps you should be more clear on your application. I suggest you revise your adoption application to ask, "Are you willing to work with/train a dog that has behavioral issues?". All dogs bark. If you're basing your adoption requirements on that factor I suggest you close your rescue and leave dog adoptions to the professionals. I won't tolerate a dog that barks unnecessarily. Dogs bark for reasons. I work with my pets to eliminate as many of those reasons as possible. Thus, minimum barking. Your passive-aggressive reply to my review (as well as others) was not required. I don't understand and am at loss of words. My family and I spent over an hour carefully filling out our application and poured our hearts out to adopt one of their dogs. We went through the extensive application, which was so invasive. They even asked for the exact measurements of our backyard fence and gate! In addition to the number of entrances and how often we lock our doors. All to be greeted with a response saying "In reviewing your application and after discussing what you are looking for in a dog compared to what we know about our currently available dogs, we have ultimately decided that we do not currently have anyone that would be a great match for the type of dog that you are looking for at this time." They did mention that the dog we applied for was pending adoption with another family, which would have been understandable, except being told THEY decided that there was no dog that would be a match. I find it hard to believe! We had no hard limits that would deter us from caring for a dog, nor did we have any objections to how much we would be willing to pay should the dog develop a medical condition. I am beyond devastated by this experience due to the lack of reasoning for our denial. We responded to their message requesting more of an explanation as to why we were denied, but have received no response. read more

I adopted both of my dogs from Camp Cocker Rescue. My first was Mia I had just lost my dog Casey after 13 years. I was looking to foster a dog. Everyone that volunteered was so nice and supportive. I loved how thorough they all where with the interview process and home check. It shows how much they honestly care about the dogs. I ended up fostering Mia which I was a foster fail and adopted her. She really helped me through my grief and I don't know what I would of done without her. About a year later we adopted Monte again from Camp cocker rescue he is the sweetest boy and we love him so much. We were the proud owners of 3 cocker spaniels. Sebastian went over the rainbow bridge in 2015 and Sophia in 2018. When we were left with only Benny I started researching rescue groups to adopt from. I was so impressed with Camp Cocker Rescue mission that they helped the most dire cocker spaniels that no other rescue groups wanted because of the high medical costs. Following the adopted families and their stories I learned that a lot of them didn't get the dog that they applied for because they were not the perfect match, but got matched up with another dog that was the perfect match for them. So, when I saw Sydney being rescued in April 2019, I fell in love with her instantly and wanted to only love her and spoil her as I'm sure everyone else did. I actually, filled out the lengthly application twice before I sent in it. It was like applying for college or a job. I did prepare emotionally to be matched up with another dog other than Sydney. I feel as though the dog chooses us, we don't choose the dog. Things moved really quickly, once I sent it in. I got an email to do a phone interview with our whole family, set up a home check and brought Benny to the meet and greet. Since, adopting Sydney we've become part of the Camp Cocker Rescue Group's Family. I've learned that my cousin also, adopted through Camp Cocker several years ago. We really love being a part of the Camp Cocker Rescue Family and support all the hard work they do! I like how transparent they are with all the medical cost and procedures each rescue is being treated for. It definitely takes a village! We especially enjoy seeing all the other happy wigglebutts living their best lives on social media! We also, had a rewarding opportunity to foster for a Camp Cocker wigglebutt. It was a pleasure to watch a dog come into it's own. They become your family and it's definitely hard to let them go but, I can tell you that they are in the perfect forever home and we couldn't be happier! read more
