We went to BRLA with an idea that we wanted a 1-2 year old boxer. The entire experience was amazing and they were so patient as we wrestled with the decision. We almost walked away feeling like we didn't make a strong connection. But in the end my daughter wanted this one dog, so we ended up adopting a 3 year old girl boxer we named Dottie. We got her home and within 24 hours it was like she had always been a part of our family. Thank you BRLA

Our sweet foster, Ruby. A few months at home helped her break out of her shell and find the perfect home :)!

Full disclosure: I am a volunteer at BRLA for half a year now and I have fostered one of their dogs for a few months until she was adopted. I've had a boxer for 13 years of my life and absolutely adore the breed and was glad I was able to help dogs at this location. BRLA is an incredibly COMPASSIONATE organization that makes a LIFE LONG COMMITMENT to all the boxers that they take in. That means they'll care for their boxers until their dogs crosses the rainbow bridge, even if it's returned after an adoption. This is a no-kill shelter. If you're thinking about adopting, fostering, donating, or even volunteering here, PLEASE DO IT! This organization is run by volunteers and they try to rescue as many boxers as they can so there's always many dogs that need your love and support. Unlike what's said in another review, they take boxers of all ages, colors, and even mixes! The website is also updated regularly so the selection is usually current and accurate. If you are considering adopting from a rescue, please understand that the adoption counselors will consider your requests and match you with the best dog based on their experience. The match is incredibly important because each dog is unique just like your family's situation and pet experience so please keep an open mind. Boxers are also a high energy breed so if you've never had a boxer before than it's probably best for all parties involved for you to trust the adoption counselors. They truly want to set these adoptions up for success by sending dogs to homes where the family has the best chance in integrating these new members into their families. Therefore, sometimes that might mean you want a young energetic dog but an older experienced dog would be more suitable for your young toddlers. Please also remember that a number of these dogs were RESCUED so they were saved from kill-shelters, abusive owners, and etc. BRLA does its best to understand their background story and provide the best healthcare and training to give these dogs a chance to live a happy life in a loving home. Therefore, please remember that when you're adopting these dogs they're looking for owners who will love them unconditionally and not just "shop" for a perfect dog that's just automatically well-behaved. A rescue dog has as much potential as any dog but they need a little bit more time, understanding, and compassion from their owners and it's an amazing bond between dog and owner if you're able to provide that for these dogs. And yes, the other review is correct in that you can't go inside the kennel. The dogs are brought out to meet you and go for a walk. They rescue about 50-70 dogs in the kennel so it's very disruptive for the dogs to have strangers walk through and it's a lot easier for the dogs to meet you outside in a calm environment. They're already so excited by the thought of meeting their new humans and finding a forever home that is all theirs! BRLA is truly a great place to adopt a boxer. Although I am moving to Chicago, I would definitely come back to BRLA to adopt a boxer when I am ready to have my own dog. Please give a rescue a chance!

    Sophy in the house!
    K. K.

I'd been looking over the last 4-5 months for a female companion for my mastiff/boxer/pit mix Buddy and we just adopted our new girl Sophy from BRLA this past Saturday. Yay! I have never had two dogs at the same time before & he's such an awesome dog that I raised from a puppy, I was very cautious about bringing a new dog into the household. (I also have 2 kitties.) Sophy is a beautiful 70 lb boxer mix w/ a great temperament easy-going, affectionate, active and in good shape as far as I can tell. Buddy is at least 95 lbs, very active & playful & she is one of the few that can hold her own with him w/out being overly hyper or aggressive. I believe BRLA may be in a new facility than mentioned earlier? (I went to Sun Valley.) We did not go inside (for anyone who's ever visited the shelters - some of them do not let you in the kennels or at least not for long & they definitely do NOT let you bring your own dog back there. The dogs go CRAZY!!! It is so jarring and loud, it can really rattle you, them & your own dog (especially if you're there to do matching) so it is much better to have them brought out to you. I found their website to be very good w/ great photos & descriptions that helps you prepare ahead of time. The only problem is, that they place about 10 dogs a WEEK so they cycle through quite quickly & sometimes, the dog you're hoping for is no longer around by the time you get there. They are very upfront about that and they do update the website fairly often. It's typical they book a month out for dog matching. I was amazed over the 2 hours I was there to see people there from Santa Barbara & even Central Coast - people had come a really long way, several of them repeat adopters. (Most folks seemed to have previous experience w/ Boxers.) Someone was there to greet me and from there I met 2 different trainers right away & they walked them both together, then put them in a pen together across the street IN THE SHADE. They actually had several tents set up with chairs in shade & some doggie cooling pools. Thank you!! (This summer was soooo hot & I cannot tell you how much time Buddy and I spent baking in the hot sun at some other places.) There were a lot of younger volunteers (I saw at least 4 women - all probably 35 or under & it was a lively, upbeat atmosphere.) I knew I only wanted young females, age 3 and under. Sophy happened to be the very first one they brought out and we spent a good 45 mins to hour together. No one pressured us at all and they they were very honest & accurate about how they were relating as well as her temperament. They even brought out another female into the mix to show how she might behave. They brought out at least 2 others for comparison but by then it was clear Sophy was far and away the best choice as far as chemistry & energy. They would have let us see more but by then I was pretty sure. Some places will only let you check out 3 dogs at a time & it can be very frustrating, esp. if you're coming from a distance or on a limited schedule. Trainer Nancy was very accurate about behavioral things & how to prepare my home and integrate the dogs (she gave a lot of tips as well as some great resources for discounts, natural products, etc.) She also have me her cell & was happy to take questions anytime. I bought 2 harnesses, along w/ the adoption fee & was happy to do it. I'm sorry for those who had a negative experience. Everyone can have an off day but I think you have to remember it is completely volunteer & donation-run & rescue is a VERY difficult day in & day out. They seem to truly love dogs & are not cherry-picking, they rescue special needs also but overall, I thought them to be a good looking bunch! Adoption fee is $275 -pretty low considering the breed. Some smaller private rescues in LA were around $475 for any type dog which surprised me a bit. I checked out a LOT of places & talked to many rescues over the last few months - all run a bit differently. It was draining & time consuming but also very helpful to learn more about the breeds, matching & pack behavior (& a lot about my own dog!) over that period. All places had pluses & minuses. Some facilities are posher (but can also be restrictive or expensive or without a lot of selection or...just don't really let you spend a lot of time with the dogs (something that REALLY scares me - especially if you already have animals in the home.) I'm giving a 4-rating since it's only been a couple days and we haven't been to the vet yet for Sophy's checkup but overall: they were really honest about her personality and I felt very grateful they were willing to take as much time as needed to feel like we had the right fit. My experience with BRLA (once able to get over there) was very positive - I recommend it! Mostly I would recommend patience, taking your time & keeping an open mind in your pet search. Sometimes, timing is everything in finding your new best bud!

BRLA is a FANTASTIC organization, with volunteers and staff that are truly committed to helping the beautiful creatures they rescue. We got our sweet girl Emily from BRLA when my oldest son was just 9 months old, and we couldn't have asked for a better experience. They matched us up with the perfect dog for our family, and Emily is now known as the furry sister to my two boys. We love her so much, we went back this month to rescue a big boy Boxer, and he's the experience was just as great the second time around. BRLA is careful to make sure not only that your dog fits your family, but that your family is a good fit for the Boxer you are taking home. If you are looking for a great organization to adopt a beautiful, loving Boxer from, please consider BRLA - they honestly do fantastic work.

I boxer rescue LA !!! We adopted a boxer (he may be a mix) from here two years ago. I filled out the application online and was contacted back so we can set up an appointment to go in and meet the boxers. They told me that since I have a dog already (a Maltese) they wanted me to bring her in so we can also test the comparability between the dogs. When we got here my brother told them that we were interested in a specific dog names Zeppo, so they brought him out for us so we can meet him. He was gorgeous and super sweet but because he was a puppy (10 months I think ) he was very hyper and the told us he wouldn't be a good fit with out small (7lb) Maltese. And they were right because Zeppo instantly tried to play with our Maltese Annie but we knew it would work out because she could unintentionally get hurt. After we meet Zeppo the woman who was helping is told us "I have the perfect dog for your family, he's a little gentleman" and sure enough it was Charlie the dog we ended up adopting. He was so sweet and gentle with our dog Annie, and the minute hey brought him out to meet us he won us over he came straight to us and put both paws on my brothers shoulders as if he was saying hello. After meeting Charlie we meet other dogs at the rescue but the the volunteer was right Charlie was the perfect fit for us. He had kennel cough and they gave him to us with his antibiotics (which were almost done). All I can say is I am so happy to have Charlie in our lives. He is a big softie who literally thinks he's a lapdog, he always wants to be in people's lap. He is our first boxer but will definitely not be our last! We currently have 3 dogs all from rescues and our third dog Luna who we got after Charlie (about 1 year later ) was an 8 week old puppy and Charlie fell in love ! He is so gentle with our other dogs and with us. He is very well behaved! He is our little gentleman just like the volunteer had told us. So if your thinking of getting a boxer or just a large dog go to boxer rescue la! Boxers Rock!!!

I saw Harper and went to one of the adoption fairs. I first signed up as a foster. Food was provided and one of the responsibility is dropping them off at the adoption fairs. As you can assume, I went back to the adoption fairs only to start the adoption process. The organization truly cares about their dogs, making sure they get the best medical treatment and are placed in the right homes. There is no pressure in adopting the dogs so if you are only capable of committing a short amount of time, they express nothing but gratitude. Post that phone call, my feelings about the way she handled herself Changed, and I was wary of her. Despite her assertion that I had no idea what I was looking for, I told her precisely what I was looking for: a bonded pair of cats that were a little older, say two years old or older. I had just lost my cat and my dog. I had also just lost my husband. All this within four months. I found my house too quiet without the pets and my husband, and that is why I reached out to Rhae. I wanted something to care for, a bonded pair of cats seemed exactly what I needed, having had cats all of my life. I never bad mouthed other rescue organizations, other than mentioning the southern golden retriever organization from whom my husband and I adopted two fabulous golden retrievers. While the dogs were great, the organization was not. Unfortunately, I am in very good company as pertains to being dissatisfied with that group, and I only mentioned it to Rhae when she specifically asked me if I had worked with other organizations. The forum of yelp asks for reviews. They do not ask for only positive reviews, they asked for both negative and positive, and I have given both, so on that issue and only that issue, Rhae was correct. The vetting of my house was not done by Rhae, it was done by the other woman, and we had a delightful time. Rhae is clearly a bitter and unhappy human being who calls anyone slightly older than she "elderly. "Indeed, I have let my hair go salt and pepper since Covid. That does not make me elderly. Indeed, I shared with Rhae that I had a major back surgery the year before, which is why kittens were out of the question because I could not bend as often as they might need me to. That does not make me elderly. That makes me aware of the limitations of my body and reluctant to jeopardize my health. We adopted a dog…read morethrough spcaLA and were referred there for his neuter procedure, which was required as part of the adoption agreement. The issues began at drop-off. I arrived on time at 8:30 a.m., but there was a long line of owners and dogs waiting outside. Many of the dogs appeared to be puppies, fosters, or newly adopted pets still adjusting and difficult to manage. I waited approximately 20 minutes while trying to control my 65-pound dog. When I reached the front, staff said they had no record of our appointment and asked, in an unprofessional manner, whether I had completed the intake form that was supposedly emailed to me. I had never received it. I was then handed paperwork to complete on-site while continuing to manage my dog in a crowded environment. On the form, I disclosed that my dog had been experiencing chronic diarrhea since being picked up as a stray, that we were actively working with our veterinarian to identify the cause, and that our veterinarian had cleared him for surgery. Staff then told me they would not proceed if he had diarrhea. I explained that this condition predated the adoption, that the neuter was required by the shelter, and that we had already obtained veterinary clearance. Staff repeatedly went back and forth between me and the veterinarian before eventually presenting a high-risk consent form. The communication around this was especially concerning. When the form was presented, I was told that by signing it, I was accepting that if anything happened to my dog, it would be my fault. I understand that additional risks can exist, but this was handled in a dismissive and inappropriate manner. If the clinic had sent the intake paperwork in advance or reviewed the medical concerns beforehand, this could have been addressed prior to my driving an hour from West Adams to Van Nuys with a dog who does not travel well. I was also disappointed that additional charges were presented for items such as an e-collar, pain medication, and IV fluids. For a required adoption procedure, these added costs felt excessive. Pick-up was similarly poor. When my dog was returned, a staff member commented, "Make sure to take care of the diarrhea because he still has it," despite our earlier detailed discussion of the condition and treatment plan. While loading him into the car, I noticed feces on his cone, tail, and legs. This suggested he had soiled himself and had not been adequately cleaned before discharge, which was both upsetting and concerning from a sanitation and post-operative care standpoint. Overall, this experience reflected poor communication, lack of professionalism, and inadequate attention to patient care. I would not return to Pet Orphans of Southern California and would not recommend this clinic to others. I also plan to share this experience with spcaLA so they are aware of the concerns regarding this referral partnership.
