He was Sweet Pea from Tennessee and had been transported to California by a team of dedicated pet loving volunteers. We met him a short time there after and we adopted him. We named him Teddy. He was young and got along with our other senior rescues. He was a good boy despite a few skirmishes with our male dogs. His last 7 years has been lived as the senior member of our canine family consisting of Teddy and three terrier females. They all loved Teddy and they kept him young at heart. Sadly today, Teddy crossed the Rainbow Bridge with the help of our vet, Dr. Pershing at the La Canada Pet Clinic. We will miss our little man, my muchacho, my wife's Boo but we are better humans for having this cocker spaniel who survived a vicious attack in Tennessee in our lives. We thank Camp Cocker and all the people who lent their hands and time in rescuing him and bringing to California and us. We had a very disappointing experience at Pet Orphans of Southern California. We adopted a dog…read morethrough spcaLA and were referred there for his neuter procedure, which was required as part of the adoption agreement. The issues began at drop-off. I arrived on time at 8:30 a.m., but there was a long line of owners and dogs waiting outside. Many of the dogs appeared to be puppies, fosters, or newly adopted pets still adjusting and difficult to manage. I waited approximately 20 minutes while trying to control my 65-pound dog. When I reached the front, staff said they had no record of our appointment and asked, in an unprofessional manner, whether I had completed the intake form that was supposedly emailed to me. I had never received it. I was then handed paperwork to complete on-site while continuing to manage my dog in a crowded environment. On the form, I disclosed that my dog had been experiencing chronic diarrhea since being picked up as a stray, that we were actively working with our veterinarian to identify the cause, and that our veterinarian had cleared him for surgery. Staff then told me they would not proceed if he had diarrhea. I explained that this condition predated the adoption, that the neuter was required by the shelter, and that we had already obtained veterinary clearance. Staff repeatedly went back and forth between me and the veterinarian before eventually presenting a high-risk consent form. The communication around this was especially concerning. When the form was presented, I was told that by signing it, I was accepting that if anything happened to my dog, it would be my fault. I understand that additional risks can exist, but this was handled in a dismissive and inappropriate manner. If the clinic had sent the intake paperwork in advance or reviewed the medical concerns beforehand, this could have been addressed prior to my driving an hour from West Adams to Van Nuys with a dog who does not travel well. I was also disappointed that additional charges were presented for items such as an e-collar, pain medication, and IV fluids. For a required adoption procedure, these added costs felt excessive. Pick-up was similarly poor. When my dog was returned, a staff member commented, "Make sure to take care of the diarrhea because he still has it," despite our earlier detailed discussion of the condition and treatment plan. While loading him into the car, I noticed feces on his cone, tail, and legs. This suggested he had soiled himself and had not been adequately cleaned before discharge, which was both upsetting and concerning from a sanitation and post-operative care standpoint. Overall, this experience reflected poor communication, lack of professionalism, and inadequate attention to patient care. I would not return to Pet Orphans of Southern California and would not recommend this clinic to others. I also plan to share this experience with spcaLA so they are aware of the concerns regarding this referral partnership.

Finding the facility is a little difficult to find as there's no signage detailing where the business is, but the address is legible outside of it. There's metered parking in the front of the building. Be aware that most of the meters do not function which means, you can still park there anyway. Samantha was our host for our in house event today and she set up the play area and cleaned up any puppy "messes" rapidly along the way. She was very kind and supervised with so much care for my children and those adorable pups. The pups had lots of toys to choose from, water bowls and were just so lovely. If my place allowed animals - I'm sure we would have taken one home! My kids ENJOYED their time and fell in love with these 5 sweet and energetic puppies!!! The people that run this rescue are amazing, have hearts of gold.... and have only one motive~ to save precious souls that are discarded like an old appliance or worn out piece of furniture! I have nothing but praise and the utmost respect for this particular rescue and would never hesitate to recommend them..... Not bad depending on which staff you run into like any shelter. Some love animals and some love the…read morepay. Just like any job. They are on the mid to smaller side compared to other LAAS locations, but have a nice sized play yard. Unfortunately LAAS is a broken system just like the entire animal control/care system is, across the state, nation, world...no one cares about these guys because they don't turn a profit sadly. They do their best (well, some staff...not upper management) and there are lots of cute doggos that don't deserve to be here, and sadly deteriorate just from being sent to dog prison. LAAS at least has adoption discounts constantly, just about every weekend, so there's no excuse not to adopt from the system versus getting an inbred dog with health issues for thousands of dollars. Lots of them end up back here after 1 to 2 years old it seems. And if you can't adopt, volunteer! Dog walking is the best escape from LA.

On another, stated "looks like maybe a campus problem ". Since they were closing, they said to come back and they would splint it. Well, if the medical team in charge had ever bothered to xray his leg, a splint wouldn't do it. This puppy has had a broken leg since he was 2-3 weeks old. 3 vets all said the same thing," Why wasn't this corrected before he was put up for adoption?" Our sentiments exactly. Long story shortened, the puppy required surgery, which he had today. Total cost so far is over $6000. This puppy has been in our home only 2 weeks. The shelter is saying its our problem, since he was taken home. Not only were they negligent in their care, but fraudulent in their paper work. This shelter deserves no funding if any kind from the city. DO NOT ADOPT FROM THEM.
