I've been a customer and an advocate of Dogma (even got my neighbor to use daycare) even before their doors opened. The groomer, Shiro, had been grooming my dogs for a few years now. I love him and still do! So this is not meant to be a scathing review but rather a note of disappointment. Never before has it happened that my dog's haircut came out uneven. Never. So when I noticed the cut I emailed them so Shiro can even it out. Nina informed me that they allow only 1 week for clients to return free of charge but they offered me a few days during the week. I wish I had noticed it sooner. Unfortunately, my work schedule didn't allow for that. So I asked for a discount on the cut since it wasn't really what I paid for. Since I've been Shiro's customer for several years, I was hoping for a favorable response. Instead, I received none. My dogs stopped using their daycare and boarding over the years as their policy has become, what I felt was, less accommodating and inflexible despite yearly price increases. There is no discount whatsoever for multiple dogs. Also, there seems, to me, a revolving door among the caregivers which surprised me at first. One time my dogs boarded, I called to tell them I was stuck in traffic from JFK only to find out that they had a 15 min grace period otherwise I would be charged an extra day. Also, there is a fee for administering medication per instance. While I understand Jun ultimately has a business to run the reasons I supported Dogma have faded. The straw that broke the camel's back was the non-response. It felt arrogant and dismissive. Dogma's business seems to be doing well so this review will not cause any defection. I must emphasize that this is neither a rant nor meant to bad mouth Dogma or Shiro. This is a statement of how my last experience made me feel. For those who use Shiro please continue to do so. Just be aware of the fine print. I wish I didn't have to assign a star to publish this. Since I can't, I'd have to assign what I think is appropriate for my experience. Shiro may have lost a long-time customer to no fault of his. Unfortunately, my business doesn't seem to matter much to Dogma anyway. read more

There were 40+ dogs put together in a pen and never given any water. I watched on the video that they separated my dog, but when I went to pick her up they said, "she did great." Out of nowhere the owner called me and said the groomers were no longer welcome for any grooming services. In fact, they wanted me to sign something that grants the groomers all permission to shave my Pomeranian if need be. How ridiculous is this "new" policy. DO NOT render any services with this crooked business whatsoever. We found several other top rated groomers in Manhattan that require no BS. Even my pup is happier not going back to this puppy mill style groomer. Beware as one of the groomers is a heavy smoker and each time I picked up my dog he wreaked like cigarettes and ALWAYS had balls Of knots under his arm or ears. This update is in regards to boarding and grooming. I've thought a lot about posting this publically and updating my once glowing review of DOGMA however recent events and being a responsible dog owner who understands the need for my dog to be in a safe environment, I need to amend my experience here. It seems that DOGMA has become very overcrowded recently and this has caused the quality of care for their dogs to drop. On New Years eve we boarded our sato rescue dog. Being worried pet owners we frequently checked in on the cameras to see how she was going and to be honest... what we saw was horrifying. Over a period of 6 hours from 1am-7am these were the issues. - For some reason my dog along with about 5 others was sectioned off in an area where there was NOTHING for her to sleep on but a cold concrete floor, and I don't care how good your heating is - Concreate in December in NYC is freezing. No beds, no blakents. Nothing. I understand they have an "open sleeping policy" but this should involve access to a soft surface. - There was filth everywhere that had been left in that state for at least 7 hours. They had not been checked in on. (see photos) - A toy that had been destroyed and was scattered all over the floor has been moved into a pile but not cleaned up. This is a significant choking hazard especially for smaller dogs. - The very bright flurocent lights had been left on causing all of the dogs to be full awake and alert throughout the whole night. We frantically called DOGMA to tell them we could see the state of the place on the cameras and we were very very concerned. The girl I spoke with (the night shift person) said at the time I called her she had been "very busy with dogs downstairs". I have attached a photo from the cameras of the downstairs area at that time... Completely empty. Eventually we could see her cleaning the area. We emailed and called the management as we were away for another night and this would mean out dog would have to be there. To their credit we sent them the photos and they seemed concerned and on the second night turned the lights off and made sure no dog was locked in the concrete area without something to sleep on. However we were charged in full for the experience ($100 a night for a square of concrete and zero hours of sleep) and to this day I have not been contacted by the owner and at the very least apologized to. After this experience we decided to not send our dog back there for awhile but we would still have her groomed there as our past experiences had been great. However this experience, was again not. It took over a month for them to have an appointment time which is fine, great for them to be so busy! However it was fairly obviously they did a rushed and careless job of my dog this time. She was buzzed very haphazardly, and unevenly. A completely disappointing and different experience from the same time last year. That will be the last time we send our dog to dogma which is incredibly disappointing. Its sad to see somewhere that was once the best in NYC drop their standards so significantly. read more

This is one of the least professional businesses I've dealt with in the 11 years I've lived in NYC. This place is a cash cow. They just take as many dogs as physically can fit in their spaces in order to make money. There's no transparency for your dog's behavior or other dogs' behavior towards yours. I'm not confident they provide water. There's no offer to tour their facilities, nothing. I continued to take my sweetheart dog there for daycare bc she seemed to like all the activity and would squeal when we would approach Dogma. They also ask you what your dog looks like when you pick them up which is a little concerning. Like, you have a photo on file, why don't you look first? One time a new employee started and brought the wrong dog out. They apologized profusely but it did make me nervous. A friend was like well maybe because they were new? So I gave them the benefit of the doubt and continued to send her there once in a while for daycare, but definitely not once a week like I used to. However, I was in a pinch this month as I had to take a weekend trip for a wedding, my family was out of town so they couldn't watch her, and I had no choice but to board my dog for the weekend. I was really nervous to board her there, but she's fairly sensitive and I knew trying a new place out of the blue would be a tough transition for her. At least she's familiar with Dogma as she's been going there for several months for daycare. It made me feel better that one of my neighbors boarded her dog there and had no complaints (though when you don't know someone that well, that may not be saying a lot). I get to Dogma to drop her off and I had packed small sandwich bags with her food, with clear labels for each day. I even packed an extra meal for Sunday evening in case my flight was delayed and I missed their ridiculous 5pm cutoff time for pick up. There was no "would you like to tour the facilities? Can we show you where she'll be sleeping?" Absolutely nothing they were just like OK THANKS BYE. I told them I'd be back Sunday around 3pm and they couldn't care less and clearly wanted me out of the door. Sure enough, my flight was delayed by a couple of hours on Sunday. I called them and said unfortunately my flight's delayed so she may have to stay another night. The girl on the phone, who I think was the same one that brought out the wrong dog months ago was like "but what should we do to feed her? You didn't pack extra food" and I was like ummm it's clearly labeled on the bag, you should have it. And she was just like oh ok that's fine we'll feed her. THEN I pick her up Monday morning and they go "I think we have extra food for her in the fridge upstairs." LIKE WHAT?! Did they not feed my dog Sunday evening? $300 for this place. I'm never going back. And what's more. When I dropped her off I was chatting with another dog mom who was dropping hers off for daycare and told her I was nervous to leave my dog with them and she said, and no joke "No offense, I'm sorry to say this to you after you've already committed to boarding her this weekend, but that would make me really nervous. They take wayyyy too many dogs. I only bring my dog for daycare bc he has a lot of fun with all the other dogs but I WOULD NEVER board him there." read more

My pup is an energetic wheaten terrier who loves long walks, looking out the windows, and playing with other dogs. In her previous and more corporate daycare, where she stayed in a basement space all day without a single walk, her personality started changing for the worse. She came out of there blank-faced like she had seen a ghost, and slept for a day and a half. At first, I thought she was dog tired but then I realized she was dog depressed. Here at Dogma, she comes out energized and happy because she spends a day on a second floor with a giant window, and the daycare staff takes her out for 2-3 relief walks. What a difference! Overall, the staff is fantastic and you can tell the owner and her employees genuinely love dogs. The place feels more like a daycare for children than for pets. It's very clean and welcoming, and seeing a bunch of happy dogs in the window at drop-off and pickup makes me happy. I cannot imagine how happy my puppy girl is when she sits there. Sixth avenue has a heavy traffic because of the Holland Tunnel, so for pups, it's like for us binge watching TV streaming services. They look super entertained. On a con side, it's more expensive than most doggy daycares. But I'd rather pay a few dollars on top for her to be happy and to be walked and well cared for than seeing my sunny, funny pup lose her spark. We don't go there every week but when I go to the office and nobody else is home, my little mama's girl howler is in very good hands. And it's only a few-minute walk to and from my office so it's convenient for me to drop her off and to pick her up. read more

Front desk customer service brought a 5 star review down to a 3. Please train front desk folks. Shiro, the Corgi expert groomer, is 5-stars all around. He groomed our Corgi, Mia, very well and was very kind and professional. Shiro is the only reason we come to Dogma. As for the front desk customer service, there were multiple misses: 1. Very awkward experience walking in to check in for our grooming appointment. The girls just looked at us, didn't say hi, looked through paperwork, and then finally said, "Are you here for Mia (our dog)?" 2. One of the girls said she'll give us a 40 minute heads up call or text when our dog would be ready. Never got the heads up. Only a text that she was ready to be picked up. More on this in a bit. 3. It was a 30 min commute back to Dogma, and she was just sitting leashed in the lobby. Was she leashed like that the entire time while we were commuting? 4. Tipping/Gratuity: The same girl that was helping us saw that we wanted to take 30 seconds to record our dog's first grooming session, but decided to very audibly ask 3 times in the span of 30 seconds how much we're tipping. That is poor etiquette on their end as came off as a passive aggressive demand. Tipping is supposed to be a discrete gesture, not a public statement for the lobby. I intended to leave a cash tip from the start but the way the girl about it was in poor taste. read more

Dogma Saved Us!!!!! Post a few beach weekends another groomer told me that she would have to have to shave my Samoyed to get the matts out of her hair. Then we were lucky enough to find DOGMA. They were super sweet and reassuring. Shiro and team spent 4 hours grooming our dog. She came out happy and prancing and beautiful and matt-free. Everyone compliments how beautiful her fur looks. DO NOT BRING YOUR DOG HERE JUST BECAUSE IT'S IN THE WEST VILLAGE AND "LOOKS" NICE. -There is a reason their recent reviews are all 1 star.- When DOGMA opened my husband and I were very excited! It's around the corner from our house, the facility was nice and they raved about their grooming. ALL OF THIS QUICKLY WENT DOWNHILL! Months after opening, the facility started to always smell of dog pee, was constantly overcrowded with dogs, the front desk staff couldn't be bothered with our questions or concerns and the groomer nicked our dog multiple time. (Once on the tummy and once on his booty.) We took all of this as "new business growing pains" BUT now feel very silly we have put up with their unprofessionalism this long- solely because of their convenient location. Memorial Day weekend DOGMA was fully booked so we took our dog over to PupCulture. After 2 minutes talking with their staff, it was like a lightbulb turned on for us. They were extremely knowledgeable, kindly answered all of our questions and made us feel comfortable boarding our dog at a new place. ANYTIME we had a question about our dogs stay at DOGMA they would have to ask multiple staff members (who all had different answers), made us feel like we were harassing them when we asked if they fed our dog (because they had forgot his food before) and could never keep track of when we would call to cancel or make a reservation for our dog- "due to multiple people answering the phone" (their words). We are sad to see the decline in DOGMA because our little guy made friends there, BUT professionalism and piece of mind is way more important to us then having the convenience of DOGMA in the West Village. read more

The people in the front office are very nice and the place gives an illusion of being somewhere to trust sending your dog. After having my dog boarded and groomed there, I can say that I will never be returning. Her boarding consisted of being kept in a room with all of the florescent lights on all night, urine and feces on the ground and nothing but a cold, hard floor to sleep on. The owners action was to apologize to us, correct their behavior for the next night and then disable their cameras so no one is able to see what's happening anymore. No refund, no change in long term behavior - it was swept under the rug. The first time my dog was groomed there, we had a decent experience. Last time, however, they did one of the worst jobs I've ever seen. Dogs rely on their fur to regulate temperature and for Dogma to not understand that and to cut my dog's hair as short as humanly possible shows their lack of care and understanding of dogs. I would give some leniency to a communication issue here, perhaps they misunderstood what we want, but this haircut was to a degree that was unacceptable by any measure. Bottom line is I will never be going back here with this dog, or any dog I have in the future. read more

You can feel the difference between Dogma and any other daycare the moment you walk into the facility - the staff is warm, personable, and even the space smells good (not common for doggy daycare centers)! They are attentive to every dog in the space, and are prompt in reaching out if they think there may be any issues (ie - my dog regurgitates, and they would check in if it seemed off). Butter was obsessed with going to Dogma, and would try to lead me on walks there even if we weren't going that day. I also boarded her a couple times when I was traveling for work, and felt extremely comfortable and at ease. Last but not least, Dogma even sent us a get well present Jun and her staff are amazing. I don't know what I would do without Dogma! I've been sending my dog Henry here for over two years for daycare M-F and periodic boarding and he loves it. Henry has bad isolation anxiety so Dogma has truly been a lifeline for me. The handlers really love dogs and take such good care of them. The space is also really great and unlike any other daycares in the neighborhood. Before I chose Dogma, I looked at a few other daycares and they all kept the dogs in dark, lower level rooms. Dogma is huge and has a giant window that overlooks 7th and brings in tons of natural light, which makes it a much nicer environment for the dogs. Even in the pandemic as I'm working from home, I'm finding excuses to bring Henry so he can play with his friends and see his favorite people. Thank you Dogma!! read more

I took my dog to Dogma for an initial meet and greet visit, and on her way inside, another dog jumped the fence. Instead of taking a minute to take care of the other dog, the staff grabbed both dogs, dragging the other one over mine, and pulled them both back behind the fence. That was my first encounter leaving my dog in Dogma's care. I brought her back for daycare, and when I picked her up, she had what looked like a small bite on her inner thigh, as well as scratches on her head, by her eye. None of the staff mentioned anything about this. Now, today I picked her up from her third time spending the day at Dogma, after I received an alarming email from the staff. The email said that my dog would have scratches on her side when she came home, and used language that made it out to seem like it was my DOG's fault for being scratched. Alarmed, I went to pick her up. Upon arriving, the staff asked if I had seen the email and when I asked what happened, they said that she "plays too rough." When I asked them why they don't monitor closer, and/or put her into the room with the bigger/more energetic dogs, they responded by saying that my dog was just too rough, and they "can't help it if she gets scratched while playing." First of all, it is a doggie daycare's ONLY JOB to monitor the dogs and make sure they are playing SAFELY and with dogs that MATCH their energy level. Not only did the staff try and blame me and my dog, but upon picking up my dog, I found that she was NOT only scratched on her side like the email had said. My dog was scratched on her side three times, twice on each side of her face, three times in her ear, and once on her belly. That does not count the bite and other scratches she received previously at Dogma. The owner told me that it "wasn't a big deal" because at other daycares, they "don't let them play" and that because they "are the only ones who allow the dogs to really play" scratches are going to happen. Maybe it's because I am a twenty-two-year-old woman they assumed that I am stupid enough to believe that, but this isn't my first rodeo. I've had many dogs and taken them to many daycares. There is no such thing as a "no play" rule and if there was, I wouldn't let my energetic, big dog go there. I completely understand that dogs are bound to get a little scraped up when they play together for hours on end, but I do NOT expect or accept that my two year old dog with MODERATE energy should be coming home from 4 hours at daycare with DEEP, actively bleeding cuts. I am completely offended that the staff didn't have the courtesy to admit to the other cuts initially. When I pointed out that she had been previously bit and that she had FAR more than just the scratches on her side, they acknowledged, and agreed that those cuts did also happen. I know that my dog is tough and a few cuts won't kill her, but she is a rescue, and the LAST thing she (or any dog) needs is to be put in situations where other dogs are getting overwhelmed by her, and scratching her as a result. If my dog was smaller, I would be outraged that he or she would be put in the same room as the big dogs. I have witnessed nothing but confusion, chaos, and carelessness at Dogma in my first THREE visits. It is clean and a nice location, but clearly not at all worth the trouble. It is far too expensive for the kind of care the dogs are given. I have asked to be refunded the $50.00 they charged me the moment I walked out the door (the email came in right as I was discovering my dogs bleeding face), and have yet to get confirmation of the refund. Here's hoping! I never leave reviews on yelp, but I read a few reviews similar to this before taking my dog to Dogma and decided to take a chance on them anyway, as it seemed the good reviews outweighed the bad. I can't say enough great things about Dogma and the owner, Jun. They have gone above and beyond, especially in these challenging times, to help us with our dog, Parker. They proactively offered to help with some dog training when he was acting up a bit (he has that terrier energy!), and Kellie was great with him and showed us what they had worked on. We (his owners) had to work through COVID as we are both in healthcare, and they were more than accommodating and continue to be there for us. My only complaint is that Parker sometimes doesn't want to leave, and when we do get him home he passes out on the couch from a full day of playing! read more

As a owner of 2 dogs I am a big time dog lover and lived in the west village for over 10 years. At first I really liked dogma but the more I went the ruder the manager Nina became and they made it clear they do not care about the dogs either !!! It looks fancy from the outside but they don't treat you or your children aka your dogs with respect. Once i went to pick up my dogs they put the wrong harnesses on them and the bigger dog was squished into a tiny small harness and could barely walk or breath!!!!! The manager rolls her eyes at customers and is incredibly rude to clients! I felt rudeness on the phone and in person while it should have been a happy place. I don't ask for a lot but when I asked the manager Nina any questions she made me feel as if I'm crazy for asking her anything!! My advice is to find another day care center that you get more bang for buck and that actually takes proper good of your dog. I just got in touch with biscuits and baths for practically half the price for day care and staff seemed so friendly and kind unlike DOGMA!!! I am taking my talents to biscuits and baths! read more

After a month of using Dogma, I will never return. Today, upon picking up my dog, I found out that the advertised "relief walks" are only done at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. This was never known to me before. The facts are simply stated as a full day gets 2 relief walks, a half day gets 1. I dropped my dog off at 4 p.m., and when I picked him up close to closing time, I asked if he'd been walked. The answer was no. So I asked when dogs are walked, and that was how I found out about the scheduled times. There are several things wrong with this. 1, even if a dog stays a full day at Dogma, they are still going through a 6 hour period where they cannot relieve themselves between 2 and 8 p.m. 2, if it is up to me to indicate that the dog should be taken out because I drop him off at off peak times, that should be indicated to me before I begin services with them. 3, what is the point in calling ahead three days ahead to make a reservation when you are never asked what time you think you will drop off/pick up your dog? Talk about perceived exclusivity. This explains why every time my dog stays at Dogma, he returns reeking of disinfectant. It likely indicates that the dogs there have a lot more accidents than they let on. Also, why are only customers who purchase packages allowed access to the camera? All paying customers should have access to a camera to see how their pups are doing. I am extremely disappointed in Dogma. I even asked to get a tour of the space when I first was interested, and was denied. I should've been more scrutinizing. I regret ever going here, and thankfully I never engaged with their grooming. Who knows how that goes. The window to the grooming space is blacked off, but you can vaguely see it from the sidewalk. You're better off finding more specialized, personalized care for your dog elsewhere. read more

DO NOT TAKE YOUR DOG HERE. I took my 7 pound poodle here for a bath and clean up. They barely did anything and charged me $100+ and they didnt even trim his nails... Also when I came to pick him up I found them using a choke collar on a toy poodle!! Which is not only excessive but also my vet has advised me that using a collar on my dog can actually cause his trachea to collapse (and kill him). You'd think a place that takes care of dogs would know better. We've been sending our dog to daycare here more and more often because we know he LOVES it. He tries to drag us to DOGMA if we're anywhere close on a walk. We've run into staff on the street and he goes nuts to see them. (I am often offended because he gets significantly less excited to see me.) Lately, I also get amazing mid-day pictures of him hanging with his pup friends. I am confident that he is loved at DOGMA and even prefer to board him there over leaving him with friends when I travel. I recommend DOGMA to everyone and can't speak of them highly enough. Side story: I brought a friend with me to pick up my dog last week. She is allergic but felt fine while we waited since the place is SPOTLESS. She used the word "swanky" to describe how nice and clean this place is and then saw her favorite instagram puppy celeb. 5 STARS. read more

Looks nice from outside. Not nice inside. WAY too many dogs in a small room, not seperated after energy/age. Dogs are not walked as many times as they said. My dog was super stressed after leaving there every day and reeked of pee. Now she is at pup culture in Soho and loves it there. I do not recommend. Girls at front desk very nice tho. read more

Dogma is amazing. The staff are kind and responsive, and understanding of all new dog parent questions. The day care rooms typically have multiple handlers working them which ensures that the room is clean (they are constantly mopping/wiping things down) and the dogs are always monitored. Their attention to my dog, Maverick, has made me feel totally comfortable leaving him there -- it's clear they all are true animal lovers and have experience/care (I even saw one handler on Saturday taking the time to pet him when he was barking and probably being really annoying but seeing the handler give a reassuring pet was all I needed to reconfirm my decision to work with Dogma!)Dogma has been a lifesaver for me so far as Maverick deals with separation anxiety issues and I am excited / grateful to have found them! read more

My dog, Pippa, loves it here so much that if we accidentally walk her too close to the building, she gets upset if we don't let her go. The client service is top notch and the Pack Leaders really dote on her. They have a pup-cam online so you can watch your dog during the day (which is awesome but also really distracting at work!) and a lot of the Pack Leaders are on Instagram and will DM me adorable photos of Pippa that I really treasure. I also love that they keep big dogs and small dogs together in perfect harmony. My dog is small, but loves the company of big dogs so it's really ideal. In addition to daycare, we also board Pippa here when we go out of town and love the cage-free approach. Pippa ends up sleeping on a futon/bed with the Pack Leader on duty and many of the other dogs. They do have kennels for those whose dogs need alone time, but most of the dogs roam free! read more

Five stars for Dogma! We take the train from midtown just to drop our dog off here. The staff always answers our questions about our dog's day. We contacted many dog daycares when looking for one and the owner of Dogma spoke to me about separation anxiety and how daycare can help. Nobody else approached my questions in such a human way. My puppy is the love of my life and I feel good knowing he is in such great hands. He is a rescue dog and is a little timid in the city. Dogma took it slow his first day and celebrated with us when he began walking around the room on his own. You don't know how thankful I am that somewhere chooses to be SO loving towards my baby. We take our year old labradoodle to grooming and playcare here, and he loves it, as do we! The staff are wonderful and really care about the dogs they look after. Our dude is always so excited to get there when we drop him off, and rushes straight to the ladies at the reception for snuggles - this is in complete contrast to other groomers and daycare/boarding that we used previously where he would shake and cry when we left him -so we know that he truly loves Dogma!
