I've been a customer and an advocate of Dogma (even got my neighbor to use daycare) even before their doors opened. The groomer, Shiro, had been grooming my dogs for a few years now. I love him and still do! So this is not meant to be a scathing review but rather a note of disappointment. Never before has it happened that my dog's haircut came out uneven. Never. So when I noticed the cut I emailed them so Shiro can even it out. Nina informed me that they allow only 1 week for clients to return free of charge but they offered me a few days during the week. I wish I had noticed it sooner. Unfortunately, my work schedule didn't allow for that. So I asked for a discount on the cut since it wasn't really what I paid for. Since I've been Shiro's customer for several years, I was hoping for a favorable response. Instead, I received none. My dogs stopped using their daycare and boarding over the years as their policy has become, what I felt was, less accommodating and inflexible despite yearly price increases. There is no discount whatsoever for multiple dogs. Also, there seems, to me, a revolving door among the caregivers which surprised me at first. One time my dogs boarded, I called to tell them I was stuck in traffic from JFK only to find out that they had a 15 min grace period otherwise I would be charged an extra day. Also, there is a fee for administering medication per instance. While I understand Jun ultimately has a business to run the reasons I supported Dogma have faded. The straw that broke the camel's back was the non-response. It felt arrogant and dismissive. Dogma's business seems to be doing well so this review will not cause any defection. I must emphasize that this is neither a rant nor meant to bad mouth Dogma or Shiro. This is a statement of how my last experience made me feel. For those who use Shiro please continue to do so. Just be aware of the fine print. I wish I didn't have to assign a star to publish this. Since I can't, I'd have to assign what I think is appropriate for my experience. Shiro may have lost a long-time customer to no fault of his. Unfortunately, my business doesn't seem to matter much to Dogma anyway.

My dog being separated and forced to watch the other dogs, as if this would help settle her down???

I went to them for daycare and do not recommend this place. I heard they made their business in grooming and are great at grooming, but have little experience in dog care. There were 40+ dogs put together in a pen and never given any water. I watched on the video that they separated my dog, but when I went to pick her up they said, "she did great." When I finally pressed them, they told me my dog was nervous and they were afraid that she was going to attack another dog, which is hilarious because my dog has never once ever even nipped at a dog. I don't trust these guys and think they are taking advantage of the pandemic puppy boom, without giving their staff proper training

These two photos were taken between 1am-7am where the dogs were completely left in filth with the lights on, unattended on concrete.

This update is in regards to boarding and grooming. I've thought a lot about posting this publically and updating my once glowing review of DOGMA however recent events and being a responsible dog owner who understands the need for my dog to be in a safe environment, I need to amend my experience here. It seems that DOGMA has become very overcrowded recently and this has caused the quality of care for their dogs to drop. On New Years eve we boarded our sato rescue dog. Being worried pet owners we frequently checked in on the cameras to see how she was going and to be honest... what we saw was horrifying. Over a period of 6 hours from 1am-7am these were the issues. - For some reason my dog along with about 5 others was sectioned off in an area where there was NOTHING for her to sleep on but a cold concrete floor, and I don't care how good your heating is - Concreate in December in NYC is freezing. No beds, no blakents. Nothing. I understand they have an "open sleeping policy" but this should involve access to a soft surface. - There was filth everywhere that had been left in that state for at least 7 hours. They had not been checked in on. (see photos) - A toy that had been destroyed and was scattered all over the floor has been moved into a pile but not cleaned up. This is a significant choking hazard especially for smaller dogs. - The very bright flurocent lights had been left on causing all of the dogs to be full awake and alert throughout the whole night. We frantically called DOGMA to tell them we could see the state of the place on the cameras and we were very very concerned. The girl I spoke with (the night shift person) said at the time I called her she had been "very busy with dogs downstairs". I have attached a photo from the cameras of the downstairs area at that time... Completely empty. Eventually we could see her cleaning the area. We emailed and called the management as we were away for another night and this would mean out dog would have to be there. To their credit we sent them the photos and they seemed concerned and on the second night turned the lights off and made sure no dog was locked in the concrete area without something to sleep on. However we were charged in full for the experience ($100 a night for a square of concrete and zero hours of sleep) and to this day I have not been contacted by the owner and at the very least apologized to. After this experience we decided to not send our dog back there for awhile but we would still have her groomed there as our past experiences had been great. However this experience, was again not. It took over a month for them to have an appointment time which is fine, great for them to be so busy! However it was fairly obviously they did a rushed and careless job of my dog this time. She was buzzed very haphazardly, and unevenly. A completely disappointing and different experience from the same time last year. That will be the last time we send our dog to dogma which is incredibly disappointing. Its sad to see somewhere that was once the best in NYC drop their standards so significantly.

Great experience. Friendly service and our Goldendoodle looked beautiful after her trim

    Bad hair cut

I used to like this place, but I won't be coming back. When people in the dog park comment on how bad my dog looks I'll be sure to mention where she was groomed. Would like your dog to be asymmetrical? I won't be coming back, and suggest you look elsewhere.

Happily exhausted after a day at Dogma!

Dogma has been a haven of comfort for us since we brought our morkie Elgar there as a puppy.... he is now turning 5! The staff at Dogma is welcoming, caring, and loving to all. It is a special place where we know he is looked after as if he is one of their own. Jun, the creator of this clean and beautifully designed space, navigates her vision of canine daycare with grace, beauty and panache. Thank you, all, for the love you share with us and our beloved beasts.

So done. Molly has…read morebeen getting groomed by Laura for eight years. She's an excellent groomer, but she is not great at running her business. Molly has had standing appointments every month, but they're not always followed up, and sometimes, I don't even know when her appointments are. I had expressed my concerns with Laura in the past. Last month, I was supposed to go away on vacation. We had already booked Molly's appointment before my vacation, so I wasn't concerned about it. I asked her for a status update on the day of, and she told me that she had moved her appointment date, and "sorry I didn't update." She didn't even ASK ME if this schedule change was okay to begin with! What the hell? Who is she to just move things around without asking me? When I expressed my frustration at the time, she gave me a very curt/dismissive reply. I called her out on it, then she blamed texting as the reason why it came off that way. Then guess what: work on your texting/communication skills, if that's the way you choose to communicate with your clients. Not to mention that whoever is helping her run the business side of things (Tammy) has been super rude. She even tried to get me to RETROACTIVELY sign a fuel surcharge document for the prior month, when this had never been discussed with me. All of her responses (via text) are super curt, dismissive, and rude. That air of superiority does not work for me. All of the negative reviews about the customer service are accurate. Things were so bad at that time that I texted Laura and said that while I've appreciated everything she had done for Molly, we were going to have to part ways. She and I discussed it, and I was convinced to stay with her. She told me about what she had been struggling with, and I was compassionate to her situation. Things got better for a bit, but not for long. That's the key issue with this place: there is a lack of consistency. Things look "better" for a bit and then drop back into the abyss. Today was the straw that broke the camel's back. Her truck needed servicing. I understand that those types of things are not predictable. Of course I would be understanding of this, but each month comes with some sort of issue. It's hard to consider this a "one off" when it happens more frequently than not. I expressed my frustration and she said she's apologized in the past. I told her that this is causing me anxiety each month. Getting my dog groomed, when her schedule is already booked, should not be this stressful. Her reply: "It is unfortunate that you feel that way. The only anxiety I had today was that I could get my truck repaired in time to not let my people down, and that it wasn't a giant bill. It is my hope that you feel better." It was clear from her response that she has no empathy for others, despite being someone who's used her own mental health issues as an excuse for her past transgressions. "The only anxiety that I had today..." part basically makes it seem like she's diminishing my feelings about being dismissed nearly on a MONTHLY BASIS. So apparently, it's only about herself. By her saying "it is unfortunate that you feel that way," it was clear that this is over and that this is completely irreparable. She takes zero ownership and had no insight into the fact that it's not just about today -- everything is additive and I have not seen things go smoothly for a long time. Apologies can only go so far. She also told me: "I agree that it would be nice if things always ran smoothly all the time, but sometimes we just have to roll with it." There's been a lot of back and forth for many years, a lot of schedule changes, a lot of Molly getting dropped from the schedule, lack of communication, etc. I had been loyal through all of it. I've BEEN rolling with it. Yes, of course it would be nice of your clients to be flexible from time to time... but it shouldn't be all the time. The tone of that also feels like she's asking ME to shoulder HER burden. Unfortunately, it is just time to part ways. They seem to charge a missed appointment fee if cancelling less than 48 hours in advance, and whole amount for no call, no show. Apparently, respect or this policy isn't a two way street. If you notice from other reviews, she's lost several loyal clients due to rudeness and lack of reliability. One of the other reviews says that they cancelled him 30 minutes prior to the appointment, using COVID as an excuse - and one of the groomers gave him a snarky reply: "I'm sorry this how you are reacting due to being rescheduled during a National crisis." It's these types of unwarranted, inappropriate, snarky remarks that I've gotten so used to from some of their people. This is clearly the norm of how they speak to people, which it shouldn't be. Perhaps she should spend more time on her business and less on her chickens.

Can't believe I have yet to review this wonderful business…read more Laura has been grooming my shih tzu Cooper every month for the last 6 or 7 years. We have used her when we lived in flatiron, Brooklyn heights and now park slope. She does an incredible job every time and is super knowledgeable about pet health and well being. Cooper has always had skin allergies and she often offers great resources and ideas. I initially switched to Laura from a store front groomer because I hated how crowded and chaotic the place would get. With hair of dog, your pooch gets one on one attention and is well taken care of. Especially great option for anxious dogs. The convenience of the groomer coming to you was an added bonus that I can never turn back from. Also love that Cooper always leaves with a cute new toy!
