We went to one of their adoption events late last year and fell in love with a timid Australian cattle dog. They did a great job of walking us through their whole adoption submission process which was online. They were very thorough where we had to meet the foster family with the dog twice to ensure we were a good fit. Dog Gone Seattle adoption coordinator and foster mom were really responsive to our first couple of follow up questions after our successful adoption of our new heeler. 6 months later, he's settled in so nicely and now we have a wonderful, loving dog added to our family. We couldn't be happier! read more

I adopted my sweet Olive (fka Trinket) here in 2017 when I was freshly out of college and into an apartment. I really appreciated their process, allowing me to meet with her and the foster family and then allowing us to make a mutual decision once she had met all of her applicants. I also appreciated that Justyna continued to support us after the adoption. Olive was barking a lot during crate training, and they were ready to give me tips and advice. I could tell they were super committed to finding the right fit for the dog but also to supporting me. I am now looking to adopt again and have loved that they host meet and greets at local breweries and wineries. I also really like that they continually update their dog listings as the foster family learns more about each dog. I feel like when I look at the listings, I can learn a lot about the dog and feel like they keep it real. Excited to hopefully adopt with them again very soon! read more

We had a fantastic experience adopting our dog, Benji, in January 2024. As first-time dog owners, we really valued the clear instructions and support during the early days--it made a lasting difference. Two years later, he's doing great. We had the absolute worst experience with Dog Gone Seattle. When putting our application, we stated we needed a dog that had no need or want to be dominant and we were reassured multiple times by the foster and shelter that the dog we had picked had no want to do that and as soon as any sort of playtime, the dog was body slamming our dog and refused to stop the aggression. After we returned the dog, they slammed us onoine and blocked us from any type of communication. After our experience I did some research and it seems to be a reoccurring thing. it's really frustrating when you're up front with what you're looking for and a shelter lies about a dog you're interested in and then bathers you for returning the dog despite you being upfront with your expectation. read more

I have fostered 5 dogs with them and we ended up adopting 2 of those. We had a great experience both with fostering for and adopting thru DGS. My foster dogs case manager was always very attentive with any issues or concerns that I had. A couple of those fosters had health issues and working with them to make sure the dogs were properly cared for was a very easy process. I can safely say that everyone genuinely cares about these dogs and want the best for them. After we adopted our first dog she had a major health issue and could have died. I reached out her old case manager and she immediately responded with recommendations and supported me thru the entire process with my dog. We had already adopted her almost a year before and they didn't have to do that at all but they really do love all of the dogs that come through their care. Because of all that I still like to volunteer with them when I can read more

We've adopted two dogs from Dog Gone Seattle. The first was a 3.5 year old Amstaff mix named Luna (FKA Greta) who had been in the rescue for over 6 months with only one other person ever expressing interest (which is crazy because she was amazing). She was a doll and just the sweetest dog ever, may have been scared of loud noises, new flooring, cars, etc, but just the kindest dog out there. Unfortunately, after 5.5 years of fetch, swimming, and good eats with us she passed away from cancer at the beginning of this year. We adopted our second dog from DGS 6 weeks after Luna's passing who was a 1 yr old pittie/boxer mix named Maya (FKA Gabriella/Gabbi). It was our first 'puppy' as we generally adopt middle-age dogs, so it was definitely a shift from our calm, cool, and collected Luna and previous dog Zoey. But the foster did a great job and she has adjusted well and has been a great student in training. One thing I appreciate about adopting from DGS is the transparency, knowledge, and time that goes into the adoption and match process. Being a foster based organization they have first hand knowledge of the quirks, opportunities, and awesomeness of each dog, and what environments they will thrive or struggle in. While it may be discouraging to not be the one selected as the adoptive family, all decisions are made in the best interest of both the potential adopter and the furry friend. As an adopter, I appreciate having transparency into 'what we are getting into', because it helps you reflect on whether or not the support, training, or environment they need is conducive to your life. All that said, even if you aren't selected for that first pup, don't give up. There are lots of other amazing canines available at this rescue, just give it time. Also, for those considering adopting a middle or older age dog, just do it. You'll have many amazing and memorable years with them and they are really the best companions out there. read more

I submitted an application on February 6th for a dog that is good with kids (I have 2). I waited 2 weeks to follow up, since the automatic reply said to be patient, it is run by volunteers. A week later I was told the case manager would be in touch. No one got in touch after 2 weeks, so I emailed again asking if the dog was available. No one responded at all. I emailed again 12 days later, asking if there was some sort of problem or the dog wasn't available, please let me know. I was told again that a case manager would be in touch in a few days. Nothing. I emailed again. Now, a full 8 weeks later, the case manager Justyna Kieko finally responds. She says there are 30 applications, and the dog would not be a good fit in my home because I have children. read more

I have been involved, in a variety of ways, with dog rescues for many years, including for nearly a year as a foster with Dog Gone Seattle. Often, rescues are well-meaning, but poorly run. That is not the case with Dog Gone Seattle, which is run like a well-oiled machine! And, everyone involved with DGS seems to have the best interest of the dogs as their top priority. if you were looking to adopt a pet, do some volunteer work with a rescue organization, or become a foster, I strongly recommend DGS! read more

This is one of the organizations that intimidates new dog owners and almost turns me to breeders. Constantly late to the appointments without any apology, asking foster parents to keep the dog in the crate for a few hours a day and kicking people out of FB group once they use all your value or have you foster for a few months are some of the things I have been through. Don't get me wrong - they are really nice to people who match up to their perfect standard for example having a fenced yard and very experience dog owner. But as someone who is learning to be a better dog owner, I feel discouraged by their rude attitude and shaming. I hope they don't abuse their dogs like how they abuse humans' feelings. I would suggest looking at other dog rescues or shelters if you prefer adoption. read more

After looking for a dog for over a year, we were blessed with our pup from Dog Gone Seattle in August. We were experienced dog owners, but even still were told certain dogs wouldn't be a good fit for us from the agency. DGS is definitely looking to pair pets with their ideal home, rather than getting them out of their foster program. It may require a little more patience, but, considering you are asking for a 15 year commitment, I think it's worth it! read more

Slightly biased review warning: My wife and I have both volunteered for Dog Gone Seattle on occasion. :) With that caveat - we have just adopted our little rescue pooch from DGS and couldn't be happier. He is just an unbelievably joyful little guy that has already lit up our entire neighborhood. The foster was great to work with and the process was smooth as well. With so many dogs out there that need homes choosing a rescue was an easy call. If you're considering adding a pooch to your pack you should consider working with Dog Gone Seattle. read more

We adopted a beautiful lab mix from DGS in May. Toni and Jayne were super helpful all along the way. Our new fuzzball was fantastic at first. It was clear she had some training (slept through the night, was very well mannered around people and kids, etc), but around the third week she began to show signs of reactivity to my son. Things escalated, and it was clear that she had some sort of issue with only him. It made us all feel a little uneasy. Toni and Jayne couldn't have been more gracious with our difficult decision to return our pet to foster care. It was a difficult decision, but ultimately it felt like the right one. We still think she's an awesome dog, and I think she'd do amazingly well in home without children. DGS was so helpful and understanding throughout the whole process. I really can't recommend them enough! read more

Wow, what an amazing, compassionate bunch of people. They truly try to match the right dog with the right human. We adopted our wonderful dog Bowie from Dog Gone Seattle a couple years ago, and have fostered a few dogs with them since as well. This rescue really, really cares about matching a dog with the right home, and it's completely volunteer run. I'm a bit shocked at some of the 1-star reviews - no one is entitled to just get a dog, and a dog is a dog not some product that can be quality controlled so I don't get why some people are so angry about not immediately getting the dog they want. The Dog Gone Seattle team absolutely works their tails off to rescue dogs from euth lists, transport, assess, match with a foster, mentor fosters, and match with adopters. read more

I've been involved with Dog Gone Seattle as a foster, adopter and volunteer. I have fostered 12 dogs and have consistently received the support I needed to handle training, medical needs and the sometimes emotional process of giving up a foster I had come to love so I could help rescue another pup. The dog we adopted was just one of so many deserving dogs who were otherwise headed for euthanasia in an overcrowded shelter. As a volunteer, I escort dogs to adoption events or help with transport. It is very rewarding to know that this organization has benefited thousands of dogs and the people who have adopted them. My dog, Dex, and my family are very grateful. read more

My story with DGS began at the end of December 2021. I fostered a puppy and had an amazing experience I knew my foster experience would not be very long since we were looking for a dog for my family. In the meantime, I began escorting dogs to events (a very fun experience) My second foster was the chosen one for us, we foster failed. You would think that once I got my dog I would stop volunteering. I believe in this organization so much that a few years later I am involved in meeting hundreds of dogs and potential adopters as a co-host at adoption events. I have seen so many people return with alumni dogs and received so many positive compliments about how good of an organization DGS is. Many people who already have adopted return to find another dog through DGS because they know that the organization is thorough and will try to make sure that a dog is a good match. read more

Recently rescued our latest family member from DGS after fostering for a few years. I've fostered with numerous organizations over the years and DGS has proven to be the best time and time again. Fostering and adopting with DGS has not only enriched my life and excelled my husbandry skills, but also expanded my community. I had fostered for several years out of state with another organization. My now husband and I first tested the waters together with a local organization. It didn't sit well with me that the the first application in had first choice of a dog that clearly needed a specific family situation. Luckily all went right in that scenario and the first few applicants turned him down and he was adopted to great people with a wonderful knowledge and appreciation of German Shepherds, and what that individual dog needed for success. In my time fostering for DGS (now 29 dogs), I've been supported more than any other rescue I've volunteered with. If I think a dog needs a vet visit for XYZ outside of the normal scope of issues you would expect... they arrange it. If a dog needs training outside of my scope, or I'm nervous that I'm doing the right thing with a particular case- I'm set up with hands on training and advise from both the case manager and the director. Should I ask a case manager about learning "how to, more about, hands on"... guess what folks I'm welcomed into the learning and helping space. This past week I needed hands-on support with a special case I was unsure with. Jenny the director who has SO much on her plate came over to work with me, educate me on dog Psychology and fear-states, and set this long term foster commitment and me up for success. Her tweaks to my training were spot on and I've seen much improvement in the dog with making a few small changes to our environment and training schedule. We adopted from DGS 2 years ago, and while it was while we were fostering, we were still assured there there wasn't another application that fit her needs better than our home. We couldn't be more thrilled with the connections between her and our non-DGS rescue... and how they both welcome every foster into the house. It's the dream team duo of dogs! DGS is not your standard rescue. As "staff" aka volunteers we put so much time and attention into these dogs and understanding their personalities. DGS supports us and ensures respect from transport to adoption and beyond. They truly look at best fit-like a skilled matchmaker. Without DGS not only would we not have our perfect "Batty Babe". Our fostering experience would also not feel complete. Thank you Dog Gone Seattle, you are doing the right thing, even if it's outside the norm of rescue in this age! read more

A rescue that truly cares about the best home for the dog. Not every home is the right fit for an owner or the dog. The dog fosters who are with the dogs day in and day out learn the dogs behaviors and have good input along with the Dog Gone Seattle team to be certain the fit is right. You can not always know that dog from a picture. Applications are screened, adopters are screened. For anyone looking to add a dog to their family, you know you want the right fit. Dog Gone Seattle is saving dogs daily from high kill shelters, that is their mission. Several friends have adopted from Dog Gone Seattle as well with a great experience! We are so appreciative of Jenny, the case managers and all the volunteers at Dog Gone Seattle. We've been working with them for the last few years as fosters. It had been many years since we had any dogs around so thought a great way to be involved again was to foster. We had so many amazing pups, young and adult AND they ALL found the best forever homes. We had one for almost 5 months and then she found the perfect home. Sometimes it takes time, but we feel fully supported as fosters throughout the process. We then adopted a pup through Dog Gone Seattle and are so grateful that she is in our lives. We continue to foster taking little breaks at times, but our resident pup loves having her foster brothers and sisters around. It is always hard when they do find that special home, but totally worth it! Thank you to Jenny and ALL at Dog Gone Seattle for finding homes for these dogs that ...well...don't want to think about where they might be without you! ~ wilma & mike read more

I fostered with Dog Gone Seattle for 6 months before foster failing with my current dog, George. I can say, without a doubt, that Jenny and the rest of the volunteers are wonderful and absolutely prioritize finding the right home for dogs in their care. They were quick to provide resources, training materials, and medical care as needed. They take the time to find the right applicants for the dogs in their care, and work tirelessly to rescue dogs from high-risk shelters and place them in safe foster homes. This review is specifically for fostering. We are new to fostering, this was our second puppy. We were upfront about needing training and support. Jenny was great when interviewing me, she clearly has a process and methods which work. We had an amazing experience being matched with a little 3 month old puppy whom we showered with love and attention and took her around the city and little hikes to socialize as much as possible at this critical age. It was rewarding to see her thriving, luckily she was already an easy going kid when she arrived. We also learned a lot from the YouTube videos they suggested for us and trained the puppy per their process. The reason I am giving 3 stars is because of the case manager. Anytime I had questions or posted something on the "support group" I was told off and threatened that the puppy would be taken away. I just stopped asking. A day ago I posted a picture with my 7 year old having the puppy on the leash at a train station. The case manager told me I wasn't allowed to have kids walk the puppy. That was the end of our fostering relationship. It's sad, because they are taking the puppy back tomorrow morning instead of her going directly to her forever home. It feels personal and the puppy has to pay. My 7 year old is the oldest of our 3 kids and responsible. He loves to help everyone, from his classmates and teachers to dressing up his 2 year old sister, and knowing his character I trust him. It can be a good fostering experience for other people, this is just our story and why we will go to a smaller rescue who gives more respect to their volunteers. The puppy is the best though, my heart breaks just thinking about tomorrow. read more

I posted a review on Google, but thought I'd add one here as well! We lost our girl, Hannah, one month ago and this has been an absolutely devastating loss for us and for our other dog, Stella. We weren't really 100% ready to adopt another dog, but Stella was really missing her sister, so I decided to look around. I looked at hundreds of beautiful dogs before I came across Banjo on the DGS website. The moment I saw him I knew he was the pup for us! The process moved quickly and efficiently and we had a wonderful experience with Ryan, who helped coordinate everything, and Banjo's foster family. I think it can feel like a long time when you're so excited to add a new member to your family, but it was less than 3 weeks from application to bringing him home and those 3 weeks were really important to make sure he would fit with our family. This is how you ensure a dog doesn't end up back in foster care! Banjo has definitely found his forever home and we couldn't be more thrilled. We recommend DGS for anyone looking for a pup, especially if you want to make sure you're getting a pup that fits with your family and lifestyle. read more

I have been fortunate enough to foster dogs with this organization. The volunteers and staff are amazing and supportive, and dog safety and happiness is the #1 priority. The process for adopting a dog might take some time, and you might not get your #1 choice - but it's for good reason. They take time to get to know the dogs in their care, what would be best for the dog, and then carefully consider the applicants. I can confidently say they make the best decisions for their dogs, and I am glad I've been able to be a part of the process! read more

They go above and beyond to rescue dogs from overcrowded shelters and to help dogs in need in our community. The case managers (all volunteers) are really helpful and knowledgeable so fostering has felt very supportive. UPDATED REVIEW: They do a terrible job of reaching out to applicants. I spent several minutes on my application for a particular dog. Instead of sending me a letter saying the dog is no longer available, I found out that the dog has been adopted. Doggone Seattle, please take the time to acknowledge applicants. You need to instruct your volunteers to be professional. Just because they are "volunteers" does not mean that they can just ghost applicants. To the owner, Jenny Nordon, **nobody** from Doggone let us know that the dog was adopted. The dog's profile, Oskar, was removed meaning it was no longer available for adoption. Jenny, I don't use my real name on Yelp. read more

I've been volunteering with Dog Gone Seattle for about a year, at first offering up my cats so they can test dogs for cat friendly-ness. It's so important to make sure dogs will be a good fit with the household. I've seen too many adoptions go sideways because the rescues didn't take the time to assess dogs personality and match them with the adopters needs and limitations. Dog Gone Seattle thankfully takes the time to carefully assess adopters and the dogs in their care to ensure a good match. So important for the dogs & the people. So we were approved to be fosters, we were really excited to have some furry friends come and stay with us until they found there forever home. Our german Shepard passed away about 7 months ago and we talked about adding another family member but losing him was such a sad experience we though fostering would be a great way to help out and fill that missing spot in our pack.. JUSTYNA KIEKO brought over a little guy by the name of Linus as she was handing him over she had a way to make you feel that you were being judged. She conveniently mentioned that he didn't like her husband, so she wanted to make sure that he was going to be ok.. she even went as far as telling and showing us how to put on a collar, or how to keep this urine soaked diaper on him because he was spotting and couldn't Handel a normal thing dogs do until they are neutered. she also mentioned that he might have a appointment in the morning and ssked if we could take him there. we of course said it was no problem and we would be happy to take him to the vet in bellevue the have him neutered. We asked if he was current on all meds and vaccinations. She told us he was and that he was healthy. she asked if we had a car and we told her we did. she then told us about another foster who lost their foster pup and we assumed that we were more them capable to keep control and make sure he was safe. especially since we are use to a much larger breed as this little guy was only 8-10 pounds. As soon as she was gone he was so happy and started jumping in out laps and giving us kisses. He let us know that he needed to go outside to potty. so we put on a little sweater and out we went. We walked about two blocks and he used the bathroom 8 times and pooped twice. As we were heading back in we got a text from JUSTYNA that she was on her way back to pick him up because she had to take him to the vet in the morning because he needed a "vetting" appointment that only a "DGS REP" could do. Which obviously was a lie. Earlier she asked if we could take him and also said he was current on his shots and health review. not only that but it dose state in the paperwork we signed saying he was in our custody that we would cover his medical appointments and that we would be reimbursed for appointments scheduled by DGS. As soon as she realized that we were gay her whole demeanor changed. Thats when the lies started and it all was very unprofessional. To make it even worse she CCed some random number acting like it was this other persons mistake when she clearly said that shes the one who picks up the dogs and takes care of them. instead of being upfront and honest she just made up a bunch of lies and then doubled down on them. She upset my partner so much that he was in-tears because of the way that they made him feel. As she was taking back Linus I Said that this was so unprofessional of them and if this is how they behave we couldn't be a foster and the reaction and response from her was absolutely disgusting. When we were walking out the door Linus obviously didn't want to go back with her. I felt ao bad but what could i do. Its just sad that people act like this nowadays. It honestly was the worst experience that ive ever had in the animal world... Linus was filthy when she originally gave him over to us, just having that urine soaked diaper on him was animal cruelty if you ask me. I just feel bad for the animals that come across this "foster program" Sad sad people who say they care but their actions show another darker side of the animal rescue system here in the seattle area. People that are more concerned about personal beliefs and money than the welfare of the animals they say they are helping. read more

Wonderful experience during the communication and adoption process of our pup. The response to our application was within the timeline stated in their auto response and the coordination of our meet n greet was within a week.
