I have fostered 5 dogs with them and we ended up adopting 2 of those. We had a great experience both with fostering for and adopting thru DGS. My foster dogs case manager was always very attentive with any issues or concerns that I had. A couple of those fosters had health issues and working with them to make sure the dogs were properly cared for was a very easy process. I can safely say that everyone genuinely cares about these dogs and want the best for them. After we adopted our first dog she had a major health issue and could have died. I reached out her old case manager and she immediately responded with recommendations and supported me thru the entire process with my dog. We had already adopted her almost a year before and they didn't have to do that at all but they really do love all of the dogs that come through their care. I adopted my sweet Olive (fka Trinket) here in 2017 when I was freshly out of college and into an apartment. I really appreciated their process, allowing me to meet with her and the foster family and then allowing us to make a mutual decision once she had met all of her applicants. I also appreciated that Justyna continued to support us after the adoption. Olive was barking a lot during crate training, and they were ready to give me tips and advice. I could tell they were super committed to finding the right fit for the dog but also to supporting me. I am now looking to adopt again and have loved that they host meet and greets at local breweries and wineries. We had the absolute worst experience with Dog Gone Seattle. When putting our application, we stated we needed a dog that had no need or want to be dominant and we were reassured multiple times by the foster and shelter that the dog we had picked had no want to do that and as soon as any sort of playtime, the dog was body slamming our dog and refused to stop the aggression. After we returned the dog, they slammed us onoine and blocked us from any type of communication. After our experience I did some research and it seems to be a reoccurring thing. it's really frustrating when you're up front with what you're looking for and a shelter lies about a dog you're interested in and then bathers you for returning the dog despite you being upfront with your expectation. read more

We've adopted two dogs from Dog Gone Seattle. The first was a 3.5 year old Amstaff mix named Luna (FKA Greta) who had been in the rescue for over 6 months with only one other person ever expressing interest (which is crazy because she was amazing). She was a doll and just the sweetest dog ever, may have been scared of loud noises, new flooring, cars, etc, but just the kindest dog out there. Unfortunately, after 5.5 years of fetch, swimming, and good eats with us she passed away from cancer at the beginning of this year. We adopted our second dog from DGS 6 weeks after Luna's passing who was a 1 yr old pittie/boxer mix named Maya (FKA Gabriella/Gabbi). It was our first 'puppy' as we generally adopt middle-age dogs, so it was definitely a shift from our calm, cool, and collected Luna and previous dog Zoey. But the foster did a great job and she has adjusted well and has been a great student in training. One thing I appreciate about adopting from DGS is the transparency, knowledge, and time that goes into the adoption and match process. Being a foster based organization they have first hand knowledge of the quirks, opportunities, and awesomeness of each dog, and what environments they will thrive or struggle in. While it may be discouraging to not be the one selected as the adoptive family, all decisions are made in the best interest of both the potential adopter and the furry friend. As an adopter, I appreciate having transparency into 'what we are getting into', because it helps you reflect on whether or not the support, training, or environment they need is conducive to your life. All that said, even if you aren't selected for that first pup, don't give up. There are lots of other amazing canines available at this rescue, just give it time. I submitted an application on February 6th for a dog that is good with kids (I have 2). I waited 2 weeks to follow up, since the automatic reply said to be patient, it is run by volunteers. A week later I was told the case manager would be in touch. No one got in touch after 2 weeks, so I emailed again asking if the dog was available. No one responded at all. I emailed again 12 days later, asking if there was some sort of problem or the dog wasn't available, please let me know. I was told again that a case manager would be in touch in a few days. Nothing. I emailed again. Now, a full 8 weeks later, the case manager Justyna Kieko finally responds. She says there are 30 applications, and the dog would not be a good fit in my home because I have children. read more

We were experienced dog owners, but even still were told certain dogs wouldn't be a good fit for us from the agency. This is one of the organizations that intimidates new dog owners and almost turns me to breeders. Constantly late to the appointments without any apology, asking foster parents to keep the dog in the crate for a few hours a day and kicking people out of FB group once they use all your value or have you foster for a few months are some of the things I have been through. Don't get me wrong - they are really nice to people who match up to their perfect standard for example having a fenced yard and very experience dog owner. But as someone who is learning to be a better dog owner, I feel discouraged by their rude attitude and shaming. I hope they don't abuse their dogs like how they abuse humans' feelings. We adopted a beautiful lab mix from DGS in May. Toni and Jayne were super helpful all along the way. Our new fuzzball was fantastic at first. It was clear she had some training (slept through the night, was very well mannered around people and kids, etc), but around the third week she began to show signs of reactivity to my son. Things escalated, and it was clear that she had some sort of issue with only him. It made us all feel a little uneasy. Toni and Jayne couldn't have been more gracious with our difficult decision to return our pet to foster care. It was a difficult decision, but ultimately it felt like the right one. We still think she's an awesome dog, and I think she'd do amazingly well in home without children. DGS was so helpful and understanding throughout the whole process. This rescue really, really cares about matching a dog with the right home, and it's completely volunteer run. I'm a bit shocked at some of the 1-star reviews - no one is entitled to just get a dog, and a dog is a dog not some product that can be quality controlled so I don't get why some people are so angry about not immediately getting the dog they want. I had fostered for several years out of state with another organization. My now husband and I first tested the waters together with a local organization. It didn't sit well with me that the the first application in had first choice of a dog that clearly needed a specific family situation. Luckily all went right in that scenario and the first few applicants turned him down and he was adopted to great people with a wonderful knowledge and appreciation of German Shepherds, and what that individual dog needed for success. This review is specifically for fostering. We are new to fostering, this was our second puppy. We were upfront about needing training and support. Jenny was great when interviewing me, she clearly has a process and methods which work. We had an amazing experience being matched with a little 3 month old puppy whom we showered with love and attention and took her around the city and little hikes to socialize as much as possible at this critical age. It was rewarding to see her thriving, luckily she was already an easy going kid when she arrived. We also learned a lot from the YouTube videos they suggested for us and trained the puppy per their process. The reason I am giving 3 stars is because of the case manager. Anytime I had questions or posted something on the "support group" I was told off and threatened that the puppy would be taken away. I just stopped asking. A day ago I posted a picture with my 7 year old having the puppy on the leash at a train station. The case manager told me I wasn't allowed to have kids walk the puppy. That was the end of our fostering relationship. It's sad, because they are taking the puppy back tomorrow morning instead of her going directly to her forever home. It feels personal and the puppy has to pay. My 7 year old is the oldest of our 3 kids and responsible. He loves to help everyone, from his classmates and teachers to dressing up his 2 year old sister, and knowing his character I trust him. It can be a good fostering experience for other people, this is just our story and why we will go to a smaller rescue who gives more respect to their volunteers. So we were approved to be fosters, we were really excited to have some furry friends come and stay with us until they found there forever home. Our german Shepard passed away about 7 months ago and we talked about adding another family member but losing him was such a sad experience we though fostering would be a great way to help out and fill that missing spot in our pack.. JUSTYNA KIEKO brought over a little guy by the name of Linus as she was handing him over she had a way to make you feel that you were being judged. She conveniently mentioned that he didn't like her husband, so she wanted to make sure that he was going to be ok.. she even went as far as telling and showing us how to put on a collar, or how to keep this urine soaked diaper on him because he was spotting and couldn't Handel a normal thing dogs do until they are neutered. she also mentioned that he might have a appointment in the morning and ssked if we could take him there. we of course said it was no problem and we would be happy to take him to the vet in bellevue the have him neutered. We asked if he was current on all meds and vaccinations. She told us he was and that he was healthy. she asked if we had a car and we told her we did. she then told us about another foster who lost their foster pup and we assumed that we were more them capable to keep control and make sure he was safe. especially since we are use to a much larger breed as this little guy was only 8-10 pounds. As soon as she was gone he was so happy and started jumping in out laps and giving us kisses. He let us know that he needed to go outside to potty. so we put on a little sweater and out we went. We walked about two blocks and he used the bathroom 8 times and pooped twice. As we were heading back in we got a text from JUSTYNA that she was on her way back to pick him up because she had to take him to the vet in the morning because he needed a "vetting" appointment that only a "DGS REP" could do. Which obviously was a lie. Earlier she asked if we could take him and also said he was current on his shots and health review. not only that but it dose state in the paperwork we signed saying he was in our custody that we would cover his medical appointments and that we would be reimbursed for appointments scheduled by DGS. As soon as she realized that we were gay her whole demeanor changed. Thats when the lies started and it all was very unprofessional. To make it even worse she CCed some random number acting like it was this other persons mistake when she clearly said that shes the one who picks up the dogs and takes care of them. instead of being upfront and honest she just made up a bunch of lies and then doubled down on them. She upset my partner so much that he was in-tears because of the way that they made him feel. As she was taking back Linus I Said that this was so unprofessional of them and if this is how they behave we couldn't be a foster and the reaction and response from her was absolutely disgusting. When we were walking out the door Linus obviously didn't want to go back with her. I felt ao bad but what could i do. Its just sad that people act like this nowadays. It honestly was the worst experience that ive ever had in the animal world... Linus was filthy when she originally gave him over to us, just having that urine soaked diaper on him was animal cruelty if you ask me. I just feel bad for the animals that come across this "foster program" Sad sad people who say they care but their actions show another darker side of the animal rescue system here in the seattle area. It feels unfair to give a one-star review when we didn't even get our dog here, but our experience was pretty frustrating due to lack of communication. We applied for a dog after going to one of their meet and greets. They give a notice that it may take up to a week to respond - totally fine. However, after not hearing anything for a week, I decided to check their website and noticed that the dog we wanted was no longer available. I followed up to ask about 3 other dogs we were interested in. No response for another week. They finally emailed to tell me that 2 out of those 3 dogs had already been spoken for, and that they would switch my application over to the third dog. We still didn't hear anything for another week, so I followed up again, at which point they told me that that the dog had been adopted and we would need to find another dog and switch our application again. Clearly the dogs are getting adopted to SOMEBODY, so hopefully this was just a one-off experience for us, but I wouldn't waste my time with them again. They also were not very helpful when I asked about dogs that would fit our specific needs, just told us it might "take some time," rather than being informative about the 90+ dogs they had at the time or helping us find a match. We ended up getting a puppy from Seattle Humane. They were super knowledgeable about the dogs they had at the shelter, and recommended tons of resources.
