My former foster Toddy, who found an amazing new home

I have been involved, in a variety of ways, with dog rescues for many years, including for nearly a year as a foster with Dog Gone Seattle. Often, rescues are well-meaning, but poorly run. That is not the case with Dog Gone Seattle, which is run like a well-oiled machine! And, everyone involved with DGS seems to have the best interest of the dogs as their top priority. if you were looking to adopt a pet, do some volunteer work with a rescue organization, or become a foster, I strongly recommend DGS!

Slightly biased review warning: My wife and I have both volunteered for Dog Gone Seattle on occasion. :) With that caveat - we have just adopted our little rescue pooch from DGS and couldn't be happier. He is just an unbelievably joyful little guy that has already lit up our entire neighborhood. The foster was great to work with and the process was smooth as well. With so many dogs out there that need homes choosing a rescue was an easy call. If you're considering adding a pooch to your pack you should consider working with Dog Gone Seattle.

I've been involved with Dog Gone Seattle as a foster, adopter and volunteer. I have fostered 12 dogs and have consistently received the support I needed to handle training, medical needs and the sometimes emotional process of giving up a foster I had come to love so I could help rescue another pup. The dog we adopted was just one of so many deserving dogs who were otherwise headed for euthanasia in an overcrowded shelter. As a volunteer, I escort dogs to adoption events or help with transport. It is very rewarding to know that this organization has benefited thousands of dogs and the people who have adopted them. My dog, Dex, and my family are very grateful.

My story with DGS began at the end of December 2021. I fostered a puppy and had an amazing experience I knew my foster experience would not be very long since we were looking for a dog for my family. In the meantime, I began escorting dogs to events (a very fun experience) My second foster was the chosen one for us, we foster failed. You would think that once I got my dog I would stop volunteering. I believe in this organization so much that a few years later I am involved in meeting hundreds of dogs and potential adopters as a co-host at adoption events. I have seen so many people return with alumni dogs and received so many positive compliments about how good of an organization DGS is. Many people who already have adopted return to find another dog through DGS because they know that the organization is thorough and will try to make sure that a dog is a good match.

I fostered with Dog Gone Seattle for 6 months before foster failing with my current dog, George. I can say, without a doubt, that Jenny and the rest of the volunteers are wonderful and absolutely prioritize finding the right home for dogs in their care. They were quick to provide resources, training materials, and medical care as needed. They take the time to find the right applicants for the dogs in their care, and work tirelessly to rescue dogs from high-risk shelters and place them in safe foster homes. After adopting George, I still enjoy volunteering when opportunities pop up, and am eager for the day when I can start fostering with Dog Gone Seattle again.

My husband and I adopted our first dog through DGS. From the case managers to the fosters, this organization is incredible. Without DGS, our dog and countless others would be euthanized. So grateful to this organization for giving us our forever dog. We have since been involved as fosters and are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to support this amazing Seattle organization.

I knew Hudson was going to be a challenge, but I didn't know just what form that would take. We bonded very quickly but Hudson just wasn't "getting it" -- he'd incessantly pull on the leash, freak out seeing other dogs out on walks, and I absolutely could not leave him home alone if I wanted to come home to plants still alive in the window. His issues were intense dog reactivity and extreme separation anxiety. He'd apparently been abused and, with the scars on his back legs, perhaps even attacked by other dogs in the past. He'd had a rough go of it, but I soon learned that his heart was sweet & benevolent, and that he absolutely did not deserve what he'd been through. He deserved to be safe & happy. Having worked with Judi out at Great Dog many years prior, my good, old friend Andy recommended her to me, and off we went. Judi could tell from watching Hudson and I approach that very first day that we needed help -- we were "all over the road" as it were -- but she fully committed to helping us. Judi is a special person. She most definitely "gets it" and can intuit what's really going on -- with dogs especially, but also with their *people*. We did many training exercises directly with Hudson, but I soon realized that *I* was the one who really needed the training. We started seeing Judi -- and often her amazing partners Ethan and Abbie -- every Saturday morning over many weeks. It didn't take long for Hudson to get really excited when we'd start our weekly drive up to Northgate, and he always enjoyed going (and always got lots of treats!). We would do many different training exercises with Hudson but we'd also have "classroom time", where we'd discuss the Why and the How. The results of these conversations would often surprise me later with their impact on Hudson's behavior, and how they were slowly changing him, and me, over time. We were making progress. Judi has strong opinions about dogs going back over twenty years, but she can back each and every one of those up with reason and logic. I always greatly admired her ability to communicate with dogs as well as people, and to explain, and I soon saw the wisdom of whatever she was trying to tell me. Judi is gentle and focused and knows what works, but perhaps more importantly, she knows what *doesn't*. Judi and everyone else I met out at Great Dog was naturally empathetic, competent, loved dogs, and really wanted to help. The *energy* at Great Dog is great for dogs, and for people. Good things happen there. Judi and Abbie and Ethan each helped and taught us, and their lessons and guidance continue to improve Hudson's and my life each & every day. For any dog owner who really wants to learn, and listen, and make the life of their dog as great as it can be, then Great Dog is the place for them.

First off, I have never walked in the door without being greeted with a huge smile and hearty hello by one of the staff members. I always feel so welcome and when I have my dogs with me they are usually doted over and made to feel like the most special dog that walked into the store that day. Additionally, I have had multiple, LONG, conversations with many different staff members regarding a number of different, meaningful topics - food, behavior, toys, etc. The knowledge the staff have, and the fact that they go above and beyond just to help their customers out is a big testament to why I feel so committed to spending my doggie dollars at Mud Bay. They really know A LOT and really care A LOT about making sure you're making the best choice for your animals. They might be a little expensive, but I would much rather walk into a nicely lit, well decorated, invested-employee establishment and feel like my dogs are truly cared for than a large corporation that barely talk to you, and don't know nearly as much. I'll continue to shop at Mud Bay for all my pups needs.

He's a good boy and does a lot of things right, but we've been lost on how to handle his reactivity. Paul listened to us and really paid attention to our dog's behavior and personality. He packed so much advice into our one on one session and we finally feel like we have a plan that makes sense. As the name would suggest, he has a very positive style of training, which is awesome. While some trainers would recommend using aversive training techniques to "control" dogs (no thank you), Paul's approach was to take our situation (excessive barking at other dogs on walks) and to make a plan that is fun and engaging for both us and our dog. It's going to be a big improvement in how we work with our dog. It will take work & intention to change our habits, but that's the whole thing with dog training. It's really us humans who need the training. There's no magic button to "fix" your dog. Paul helps you see that your dog is responding to your routines and the way you communicate with him/her, whether you're communicating on purpose or by accident. I should also mention that the plan he gave us is very doable--we are not very experienced with dog training & we have full time jobs, but we can definitely fit this training plan into our daily routines. We haven't had time yet to see the results, so I plan to update in a few weeks. I really believe that our plan can only make our dog (and us) feel happier, more confident, and far less confused about our communication.

He implemented techniques and strategies that Duke caught onto immediately and thrived with. We now have several techniques and strategies that we will be using daily to help Duke become the best dog he can be.
