I had adopted a troubled seven- or eight-year-old German Shepherd out of the Shelter who'd been in there, in solitary, for fourteen weeks. I knew Hudson was going to be a challenge, but I didn't know just what form that would take. We bonded very quickly but Hudson just wasn't "getting it" -- he'd incessantly pull on the leash, freak out seeing other dogs out on walks, and I absolutely could not leave him home alone if I wanted to come home to plants still alive in the window. His issues were intense dog reactivity and extreme separation anxiety. He'd apparently been abused and, with the scars on his back legs, perhaps even attacked by other dogs in the past. He'd had a rough go of it, but I soon learned that his heart was sweet & benevolent, and that he absolutely did not deserve what he'd been through. He deserved to be safe & happy. Having worked with Judi out at Great Dog many years prior, my good, old friend Andy recommended her to me, and off we went. Judi could tell from watching Hudson and I approach that very first day that we needed help -- we were "all over the road" as it were -- but she fully committed to helping us. Judi is a special person. She most definitely "gets it" and can intuit what's really going on -- with dogs especially, but also with their *people*. We did many training exercises directly with Hudson, but I soon realized that *I* was the one who really needed the training. We started seeing Judi -- and often her amazing partners Ethan and Abbie -- every Saturday morning over many weeks. It didn't take long for Hudson to get really excited when we'd start our weekly drive up to Northgate, and he always enjoyed going (and always got lots of treats!). We would do many different training exercises with Hudson but we'd also have "classroom time", where we'd discuss the Why and the How. The results of these conversations would often surprise me later with their impact on Hudson's behavior, and how they were slowly changing him, and me, over time. We were making progress. Judi has strong opinions about dogs going back over twenty years, but she can back each and every one of those up with reason and logic. I always greatly admired her ability to communicate with dogs as well as people, and to explain, and I soon saw the wisdom of whatever she was trying to tell me. Judi is gentle and focused and knows what works, but perhaps more importantly, she knows what *doesn't*. Judi and everyone else I met out at Great Dog was naturally empathetic, competent, loved dogs, and really wanted to help. The *energy* at Great Dog is great for dogs, and for people. Good things happen there. Judi and Abbie and Ethan each helped and taught us, and their lessons and guidance continue to improve Hudson's and my life each & every day. Even their staff were there for us when my wife and I got married looking after Scout. We're now onto new pup Skye who was a real problem child. I say was, as due to the help of Great Dog (both Susan and Missy getting positive mentions here) to turn our cute but satanic pup into an upstanding canine citizen. I called them the day before the appointment just to confirm and I get a recording that their Grooming Services have ended as of 4/2/2021!!!! I had heard NOTHING from them about the closing. The staff and owners never communicated with me about how my dog's day was unless they wanted more money in the form of a cbd treat to chill her out or pay for their (p)update. And when they finally communicated with me it was because an issue with my dog had crossed their line and she could no longer return unless we paid for more training from them. I took responsibility for my dog's behavior and understand their policy and the owner, judi, was very dismissive towards my concerns around their lack of communication. In addition, several times while waiting to pick her up I heard staff members yelling at dogs in the back. Also, a yelp review from 2022 mentioned they muzzled their dog without the owners consent and could tell from indentation lines on the dogs face. I have no emails from them and have never received an email from them. I wonder how much I would have been charged if I didn't show up for an appointment and just sent an email. I cannot recommend this place. A year after I started taking my puppy there, I noticed the area between her eyes looked pink, like something rubbed against it. I inquired and got no reply. I also noticed a dark line across the bridge of my dog's nose. A few weeks later, I found my dog starting to growl at and go after other dogs she would see during our neighborhood walks. The owner told me my dog was reactive and needed some training. I paid for 8 sessions of training. The owner called me in one day and tried to demonstrate how well my dog responded to their training. My dog ignored the owner's attempts. She suggested my dog take a break from their place and that my dog could use some personal one-to-one training. I was so exasperated and wondered if I had made a mistake getting a puppy. While waiting for their trainer to contact me, a friend recommended a certified trainer he knew. I contacted her and we immediately set up three sessions. The trainer came to my house and within 10 minutes, had my dog lying in a crate (she is not crate-trained) and very calm. Meanwhile I found someone to take my dog to the park three days a week while I was working. I could see my dog's personality start changing and she became less ornery and more loving around the house. I decided not to go back to Great Dog. After making that decision, I received correspondence about my dog's time at Great Dog. They had been using a muzzle on her (without telling me) that was too small and the irritation on her face was because she kept trying to take it off. Staff contacted my Vet and Animal control (without informing me) to make sure the swelling around my dog's eyes would would not result in long-term damage from the muzzling. In this correspondence, I was also informed that employees were not allowed to tell dog owners about any incidents that occurred at the daycare. Interesting because I often asked if her behavior was okay or if she had growled at other dogs there or were there any unusual incidents. I can only presume that the negative changes I started to notice in my dog's behavior after a year of going there may have been a result of their starting to muzzle her and separating her from other dogs there. I never have and never saw a need to muzzle my dog, or any of my previous dogs. My dog is happier since leaving Great Dog two months ago. She isn't trying to go after every dog she sees during our walks. And I am happier as well. I am no longer having second thoughts about having gotten a puppy at the beginning of Covid. read more

"Puppy play" is literally just that. Puppies playing. There's a reason this class isn't called "Regulated play, teaching appropriate play and is good for all puppies." Could be renamed to "Puppy play where so-called instructor holds back over-excited dog so when they are let back in they are more excited than before, learn nothing and charges at other dogs and instructor takes photos." Glad we checked out a play session for $10 before committing to the $125 classes. If the instructor can't properly facilitate play (and in an hour class that proceeded it teach her human students how to do it if that was what was expected) then I have 0 confidence that she can teach much else. For $10 if all you're looking for is to throw your dog in a room with other dogs, this is your place. Don't expect any instruction on appropriate play and you'll be a happy camper! read more

There's a saying "you don't know what you have until it's gone". We picked Great Dog as our puppy's first daycare and it was great - but it was our first experience with not only a dog daycare but also the service itself. I took for granted the attentive service and love they bring to the daycare. After a policy change at work I was able to bring my dog into work and on some days I brought my pet to Scampers in Bel Red (stay away from this place folks). I was really sad to leave Great Dog but I was so looking forward to bringing my best friend everywhere with me. Case in point, I felt like Great Dog was sad to see my dog go because they saw him grow up as a puppy. We realized the difference between these two day cares is night and day and made me fully appreciate Great Dog. key example: When my dog got sick at Great Dog I would go retrieve my dog and find him sitting next to Judi in her office being fed goats milk to ease his nausea. She gave me her card and told me to keep her updated and that she would be happy to explain her observations to the vet. I did just that and Judi kept in touch that entire day making sure my dog was okay. I was happy to see that they didn't give my dog isolated timeout but rather in someone's office where he can rest, drink water/goats milk, and wait for me to pick him up. When my dog got injured and sick at Scampers (happened maybe 3x in the course of three weeks and totaling to expensive vet visits) some of the things they said was they didn't know what happened, they don't believe it happened in their daycare, and that they couldn't offer more monitoring. Seriously. So I really appreciate the attention, care, service, and love each person working at great dog gives. All their other services are great, baths, respite care, classes... all solid. Support neighborhood businesses. I won't be going for the big flashy brand daycares anymore. read more

We were looking for a new dog groomer business for our anxious 26lb Border Collie/Jack Russell mix terrier, Millie. Today was her first time for grooming (and her first time ever, to have a bath by someone other than my wife or me). What a nice place... the people and the groomer were so sweet with her, even when she immediately peed a little on the floor when they knelt down to say "Hi" to her. They handled her with compassion and it was a lovely initial visit. Bathed, glands excreted, ears cleaned, nails trimmed... and even put a little bandana on her to send her home. I will chime in on the daycare. My dog went here a couple times a week for about 4-5 months. I second the lack of communication. Nobody ever told me anything about my dogs day, or the name of one other dog he played with etc. I asked a few times and someone would have to go check. When I would ask for some sense of how he was doing, they said he was doing well/played well. I did like some of the staff and I don't think my dog was mistreated but it was so weird- they would take him when I would go in and hand him back when I picked him up. I guess if you are ok with that then you will be ok with this place? The one time I boarded him, when I picked him up, they just passed him to me again, not a word of how he did and some of the food I brought him hadn't been used and they forgot to give him the kongs I brought for him. Had to ask if he did ok and about why the kongs weren't given and they had to go check - that was it for me. A weird disconnect and lack of communication. I knew I could do better for him. read more

We love Great Dog! Our sweet golden is a regular here for grooming and we could not be more pleased with their services. Everybody we've interacted with here has been incredibly kind and patient. Services are very reasonably priced and it never feels chaotic like some other grooming locations I've been to. Grooming takes anywhere from 1.5-3 hours and he always looks and feels great when he's done. Last time we picked him up , he was wearing a new bandana -- too cute. Would definitely recommend Great Dog. Thoughtful, caring, reasonable, and they do a greedy job! I just want to give a huge shoutout to Rachel. Our Shih-Tzu Gizmo has been terrified of going to the groomers since his 1st grooming appointment. We took him to Petco, which now I know was a huge mistake. They shaved him down so close that it looked like major rug burn all over his body. His private area looked like it was bleeding that is how red he was. He also got an infection in his ears probably from not disinfecting the tools properly. Anyways, since then he shakes uncontrollably ever single time we take him to be groomed. Rachel listened to our concerns, took her time loving on him, and gave him the best cut he has ever had. We told her what we wanted, and she did exactly what we asked. Thank you so much Rachel for giving your love and attention to our baby. I enrolled my rescue pup in the Puppy Express class + Puppy Play at 5 months old. In our first session, I learned how to teach him come/sit/stand/name recognition (which he would practice over the next few days). He also met a mentor dog which clearly calmed him and the other puppies down. Before the end of the week, Forrest could come/sit/stand, and it was all thanks to the clear instruction from the class. Name recognition took an extra week of practice. There were only 3 other dogs in our class. They were all SUPER CUTE! I also learned what normal puppy play behavior is, how and when to correct him, and most importantly I became comfortable with socializing him with other dogs. Because of this valuable experience, I was happy to let him meet any/every dog at the park, and now he is a gentle and loving adult dog. Because of my work schedule, we weren't able to attend the included 2nd and 3rd sessions before my puppy turned 6 months old (that's the age limit for Puppy Express). However, he was able to learn the basics that I was expecting from the 3-class series, all in the first session. Prior to this, I had read puppy books and knew generally how I "should" train him. I'm so glad that I took the classes though, because the instructors really know what they're doing and are totally worth the money. I would definitely go back to Great Dog for more training, and I have recommended their classes to others. read more

I left a message for Great Dog on Thursday evening to ask about rates and availability for a haircut for my cavalier/bichon mix, Izzy. They called me back on Friday to answer all my questions and were able to fit me in on Sunday. Bonus points for their quick response and availability! We usually trim Izzy at home, but she had quite a few knots close to her skin so we felt it was best to be done professionally. She hadn't been to a groomer in years so we were nervous that she would make a lot of trouble for our groomer, Priscilla. However, when we dropped Izzy off and met with Priscilla to discuss what we wanted, all my hesitations went away and I had peace of mind knowing I left Izzy with a professional and knowledgeable groomer. I really like that they don't leave the dogs in tiny kennels, but in their own secure gated spaces. They also said they would take Izzy for a walk so she could potty! Not sure what other places do, but I'm all for my dog being walked. I'm very pleased with Izzy's results too. I did not receive a training service at this place and I am never ever going to because all they want is you to pay them. I went in for a training consultation before making a real private training appointment, which is supposed to be free. On the day of the real private appointment, the trainer bailed out without notice, until I called in 5 min before the appointment, and a person told me on the phone that the trainer had a surgery. Okay, I understood, but I could not wait for the trainer to recover. I went on with other trainer. Almost 4 month past, I received a BILL for little as $35 for the FREE consultation on CHRISTMAS DAY! It is not my fault that the appointment did not carry on and no one had ever tell me about the charge before they bill be 4 month after the fact. The one star is for the trainer who stay late hours to meet with me and my dog. However, I will never work with, shop at, board my doggie, or visit this place ever again. Because all they care is that you are PAYING them. Not what they are serving you. read more

Who cuts your hair? Yes, this question is usually directed at my dog. Seriously, people have stopped us at the dog park to ask where she goes for grooming. My answer was, and continues to be, Great Dog for the best grooming in town. I highly recommend Lisa, who is a whiz with terriers. She always has great recommendations: "Let's tidy this up and leave this longer, and then we'll trim up these." I love to come back to the shop and pick up a clean, beautiful Wheatie. And Zoe always seems to hold her head a little higher after grooming, as if to say, "Hey, don't I look hot?!?" Great Dog remodeled and took over the space next door. This means the grooming area is bigger (and the store is roomier for their broad variety of products for dogs and cats). During the grooming process, dogs are kept in open pens while they're not being groomed so they can relax and socialize and still get attention. There's always parking available outside the facility, the rates are reasonable, and hours are good. Zoe gives them four paws, and I follow with five stars! read more

First off, let me warn you, to use the doggie daycare and/or overnight boarding, you're going to have to go through a screening process. You have to fill out a pretty extensive application and then drop off your dog for a minimum of 6 hours of "temperament screening." After that, they'll tell you if your dog is approved or not. We dropped off the puppy last week for his temperament screening. He came back exhausted! They loved him and he appeared to love them as well. They housed him with the other puppies and he had a blast. Well, the boyfriend and I just got back from a weekend trip to Chicago and picked up the puppy this morning after his overnight stay there. When we dropped him off on Thursday he definitely knew where he was and almost ran to the back before we could even say goodbye to him. He was ready to go. Good for him, bad for mommy's separation anxiety. Well, when we picked him up today, he was a pooped little puppy. He spent the whole day resting up because he appears to have had so much fun. My complaints: he did came back to us a bit skinny. I think he had SO much fun running around that he burned more calories than he took in this weekend. Our fault, maybe as we should have instructed them to feed him a bit more since he is a growing pup. My other complaint, and a minus one star for that, is because they don't have a webcam. I would've loved to have the option to check up on him over the weekend. read more

Really disappointed with the Basic obedience class taught by Susan(?). We signed up for this class with our six month old puppy, not because we were having issues, but more for socialization and working on training him to pay attention to commands while being distracted. The instructor is more interested in telling stories of her five dogs and dogs of the past than teaching a constructive class. The instructor is also very hard to hear while talking and I overheard two of the other attendees at the class talking about how frustrated they were. Seriously... five minutes of practical instruction the first class and ten minutes during the second class. I had positive experiences years ago at the Downtown Dog Lounge with classes and was expecting a similar environment here after hearing people rave about this facility. I should have driven Downtown... You would be better off getting a good obedience training book and spending your $135 on a bucket of treats. The employees here truly seem to love dogs and I am sure they are great for daycare and grooming, but this class is awful. :( read more

My little puppy no longer looks like a scruffy mess! Thank you! So this is my first venture into the world of doggie haircuts. I really didn't know much about them. My vet gave me a recommendation but after reading reviews on the place where she worked, I opted for somewhere else. Yelpers review led me here. It was fairly close and offered lots of other services. First off, they were super cool when I had to reschedule due to illness. Something I really appreciate. They were able to get me in again quickly too. And knowing that my dog's name was a FFVII character just made me giddy! He was still sporting his puppy fluff and could barely see anymore. When I came to pick him up, he was a new dog! He was cut so beautifully! He's a schnoodle which can be a little tricky to cut, but they did a great job. And he was in a wonderful mood because he got to play with all the nice dogs there too. I'm set on going here to get his hair done since they did a great job, it didn't cost too much and the staff is incredibly friendly. My dog has been going to their adventure park fun once a week. It's been about 4 years and she still likes it. (She told me so!) She started with puppy obedience class then we were lucky to start going to the adventure park before they have a wait list. Now that they have over night play care which is little more money than other boarding, but their care takers take really good care of our dog. We feel less guilty (just tiny bit) to leave her when we're on vacation. They always give us a little note that tells us how she was, and you can tell their staff really love our dog! Even when she comes home from adventure park they give us a note every once in a while and I really love to get those notes. My dog is kind of picky and she sometimes freaks out at local dog park when bigger dogs come to surround her but according to the staff at Great dog, our dog is doing great there. That makes me feel happy for her to have a pack of doggie friends. I also like their friendly staff members at the shoppe. read more

This place is GREAT for dogs and people! They have everything that I need in one place. Food,toys and treats, especially helpful and knowledgeable staff, bathing, grooming, walk-in nail trims, raw food, play groups and what they call "canine educators" which are trainers with lots of knowledge and dog-friendly teaching methods. ( I read this on line but read on as I spied on one of their teachers working with a puppy today!) When you walk in chances are you will be greeted by Tim, a smart and articulate guy who obviously loves dogs. He has this charming terrier named Chauncy who dashes about the store being adorable. Be sure to go meet Chesarah, a spitfire of a Brit who is so customer friendly! Clearly knows her stuff and yes, loves dogs too. I went in to find out about classes and training as my boyfriend and I are bringing home a dog as soon as we can find the right match for us. We'd love a Pitbull or a Pitbull mix since the shelters are full of them these days. So I was encouraged to see a man and a Pitbull puppy in front of the store working with one of the Canine Educators and they all were having fun practicing sits and walking on a leash. I like that this is a neighborhood place, located on Roosevelt just north of the MapleLeaf area. It's bigger than you would think from the outside. I think there is daycare on the back of building. I walked around the block to see where the dogs were and I saw a nicely fenced area with dogs romping around. Some of them started barking at me and I was impressed to see two people come out of the room that opens to the outside to mak sure everything was okay. I had to do a review for them (this is my first ever) because I read the posted reviews here before i went to check them out myself. All of the reviews but one are excellent so I had high expectations and I was not disappointed. I have visited a few other places over the past few weeks and I have yet to find one as impressive as here. I will go back again when we get our new dog or puppy and I will sign up for a class. And to make it even more perfect there is a coffee house right there next to Great Dog called Bark. Cady is almost halfway through her "Growl to Great Dog" class, and she's a star! Have we solved all her problems? Nope. Have we reinforced her insane desire to perform for treats? Yep. But we're not done yet. Just wait. The class is really great, and Cady is getting a chance to pay attention to us instead of the other 5-6 distracting dogs who each have their share of behavior problems. We suck at the homework, but I can see how it's helpful. For example, Cady needs to be taken down a peg, an attitude adjustment if you will, by no longer being allowed on the furniture or on the bed with us. We are wimps. We made her sleep on the floor once in 3 weeks. She's as uppity as ever. So we can't blame Great Dog for that, but we will be back for the scent class since there is no dog interaction, and whatever else they'll allow us to partake in. Fun runs? Probably not for this troublemaker, but maybe someday ... if we can just toughen up. read more

Doggie Daycare is a savior for your sanity if you have a 90 lb dog who loves to play! The place is great, I checked out the back and it is dog heaven. It is incredibly well thought-out and clean enough that, with about 50 dogs or so in one area, you don't even have a hint of a smell of urine! In short, this place is a paradise for dogs. I thought of docking it a star for the price, to give you an idea, when I dropped my dog off, other dog owners rolled up in the following cars: Lexus, Mercedes, BMW. It is somewhat pricey $30 for daycare and $43 (maybe more for "high season") for overnight care, but then I thought, you get what you pay for, and here, it is well worth the money. I drop my dog off and I know he is in good hands, everyone I've spoken to (and seen interact with the dogs when I went to the back or when I drop my dog off) really look like they know dogs. I highly recommend it as a treat for your dog. read more

We are home from a week-long trip and have a very tired pup sleeping his Sunday away. We can't thank everyone at GreatDog enough for looking after Bear and keeping in contact with us from afar. Five star service all the way, and I don't even have a dog! They carry good quality cat food, treats, and litter at pretty good prices for a store this size. They give a case discount on canned food, which helps even more. The customer service is top notch. I once came back with a bag of dog food with a scoop missing (the BF didn't check the label before buying/feeding to the cats) and they refunded almost the whole value and donated the food to their foster dogs. They're also nice enough to banter with every pet-loving ninny who comes in about how special Little Fluffy is. In fact, they actually seem to enjoy these conversations! My friend says they do great dog nail trims and they've agreed to let me bring my cat in, too (I don't think they know what they're in for). Will update after that experience!
