Although our recent trip to London involved a lot of family fun, our initial reason for the trip…read morewas due to a competition win via the Stylist/Emerald Street magazine - which, alongside the hotel stay, included dinner at Tom's Kitchen. Right across the road from the Four Seasons, it was the perfect location for me to be able to don my high heels and (slowly) plod across with ease. Our coats were taken in exchange for a small token, then we were shown to our table; the lights were low, there were plenty of candles, resulting in a lovely, laid back atmosphere. Slightly empty for a Saturday night - and the fact we were there on a competition win - we had attention practically lavished on us. A glass of champagne saw us through the reading of the menu and ordering of a nice bottle of Chablis, which then took the bubbly's place in our hands. We were able to eat three courses, plus the wine and welcome drink, so basically decided to go to town so to speak. The other half went for a starter of pate, followed by rump steak, then switched his dessert for a whiskey, which came with a glass of ice so he could have it on the rocks if desired. I had the scallop starter, beautifully presented with a sweet but light parsnip puree, followed by the chicken schnitzel. Served on a bed of sweet red pepper and tomato, it was quite a heavy main, though the chicken was delicious, the right balance between the crispy crumb and still succulent meat. Some of the side of fries from the steak main may have found their way on to my plate in order to break up the flavours, which is the only thing I think it was missing. Pudding came in the form of almond and super chocolate-y profiteroles, which were a sweet tooth's dream. We were checked on throughout the meal, in a professional but still laid back manner, meaning we didn't feel rushed or like we were out of place at any point. Four stars for this experience - perhaps (definitely) swayed by the attention the competition brought upon us, but nonetheless I would recommend Tom's if you're in the area.

Having said that there were two issues that frustrated me and they both affected the waiting staff. That involved getting their attention. It would be a tad unkind to say that they all seemed to have perfected the art of signal avoiding. Nevertheless it took quite some time to get noticed after I arrived and the same thing happened when I wanted to pay. Regarding the latter I did manage to resist the temptation to stick my foot out as they hurried past. I considered placing myself bodily in front of the till just to get noticed. I don't want to make too much of this as my star rating reflects my overall opinion which gave a pretty high rating. If it wasn't for the slowness of getting noticed I would have happily given them five stars

Pretty nice breakfast/brunch spot offering a wide array of American classics. I ordered The All…read moreAmerican (16.75 GBP), which was a typical combo of pancakes, bacon, homestyle potatoes, a sausage, and two fried eggs. It was rather plain/ordinary but certainly not bad. I have to say, the pancakes were a bit on the dry side though. Also, the eggs were sunny side up but didn't actually seem fried at all, as they were super soft without any crispiness. In addition, they didn't even add the slightest amount of seasoning on there - at least a few pepper flakes would have been nice (although there was pepper on the table, but still). The homestyle fries were well-cooked with a good crispiness though. The restaurant has a lower level with some seating as well as a larger upper level. It has a sort of old-timey kind of vibe, with wood panels along the walls and ceiling and a little performance stage in the back. It is conveniently located right next to the Canary Wharf tube station. My waitress was average friendliness and was only moderately attentive, as she never checked up on me during my meal. She also waited until I actually got my food to bring me my water. Overall, The Breakfast Club is a solid option for breakfast/brunch in Canary Wharf with pretty much any of the classics that you could want.

My quest for breakfast nearly turned into brunch due to my questionable navigation skills and…read more(shocker) rain. In my defense there are several rivers/canals I could be walking toward. I just kept finding the wrong one, but TBC made it worth the wait. For those seeking "a little more conversation", stop at the bar for the friendly experience you'd expect. Today I headed upstairs to the VIP Section. Unlike my wife who never saw a pancake she wanted to go home with, I like a menu with plenty of pancake choices. And bonus points if not too many are "exotic" such as cake disguised as compote-smothered confectioners-sugar-laced trendy-named items. Just get me some sort of flapjack with or without fruit. Bonus points if you have short and tall (long?) stacks. And double-bonus if you print "flapjack" on the menu. Enough about the pancakes (my wife is saying). She doesn't even like breakfast so don't listen to her (she'd skip if I weren't always dragging her out somewhere for it). Her loss. But just one more pancake point: I got the blueberry short stack. It wasn't epic but it was a solid +6-7. That works, given my earlier frou-frou comments. I couldn't tell and maybe the maple syrup was imported from Canada (eh), but we are spoilt with our Vermont supply. So no points gained/lost there. I didn't get any baked beans (yes because this was breakfast), but my bacon was tasty as were my two Americanos (aka coffees). If I had for some reason wanted pre-noon beans...I'm sure they would have been lovely, along with all the other varied menu choices I didn't have room to sample. Service was fast and efficient, and they endured my lingering into late-morning. By the time I left it had stopped raining. Will wonders never cease.

I got one of their English breakfast plates, which included a fried egg, bacon, sausage, tomato, and toast slices with baked beans. We also ordered a hearty slice of lasagna; it was great for the rainy weather we experienced when walking here. With this restaurant and other small cafes in London, we learned to request a table even though you could order at the front. Here, we chose our table, and one of the staff members brought us menus. The food portions are large, and the English breakfast plates can be shareable. You're invited to put baked beans on the buttered toast provided. While I ate the beans and toast separately, it's a common British breakfast item. The protein items were delicious, and I'm glad I left the restaurant after such a filling and cozy meal. Like many other restaurants in London, this cafe had a small water closet.
