I just so happened to speak to Isaiah on the phone because it was the Saturday afternoon after the Thanksgiving holiday and I was trying to find out what time the DMV locations, which claimed to be open on Saturdays, would be closing. So, I called the number I found on Google for the Sherman Oaks DMV location and hung up because I got an incoming call. And about 2 minutes after I ended that call I was very surprised when an extremely polite young gentlman called my number and explained to me that he was returning the call I had made to his office only minutes earlier! I mean when was the last time anyone from your local DMV Office bothered to take the time to return a missed call?? After he politely introduced himself I told him I was calling to find out what time the Van Nuys DMV would be closing since they were the local office which, on the DMV web site,
was shown as being open on Saturdays. Well, Isaiah was nice enough to let me know that while the DMV web site and Google listings showed the Van Nuys DMV as having been open on this Saturday, the truth was that since it was the Saturday following the Thanksgiving holiday that the Van Nuys DMV, along with all the other locations which reported being open were, indeed, CLOSED, due to EXTENDED HOLIDAY hours. And, just as I was about to blow a fuse, Isaiah told me, although he had just left his office for the day, that he lived nearby and if my need was urgent, he would be willing to meet me at his Sherman Oaks office, but would need 20 minutes so he could turn around and go back to open his office, so he could take care of my registration issues. Which, being more than a year past due, would not be the standard in and out transaction. To say that I was taken aback by this young man's demeanor and unusual willingness to go out of his way for someone whom he had never met and would have never even spoken to had it not been for his going the extra mile to return the call I had prematurely ended just minutes earlier, would be putting it very lightly. Even more surprising was the fact that when I told him that my need was indeed urgent and that since I worked during the week it would have posed a problem for me to get to the DMV, he actually showed up at his office as promised and proved to be an unusually delightful human being to boot...Taking the time to explain every step of my overdue registration process and when he was done with business, being so kind as to make fresh Starbucks Holiday blend coffee for us and even adjourning with us to the balcony of the business's suite of offices to enjoy the hot coffee he had prepared for us, and while doing so, engaging in some of the best conversation I've shared with anyone, especially someone whom I had just met, less than a half hour before. And all this from a business who usually provides their services by appointment only! So, I am compelled to let anyone, who cares enough to read this far, know what a pleasant experience Isaiah made getting my friend and I through what is usually the dreaded process of renewing one's past-due motor vehicle registration. So, now my friend no longer has to worry about his van being impounded. Thank you Isaiah, for your kindness, patience and willingness to go the extra mile to help a fellow human being in need and for adding a much needed "human touch" to a process usually attended to by person's whom, for all intents and purposes, would seem to have long forgotten what it means to be human.
