I will have to leave a review for DMV - Santa Clara branch. My past and most recent in person experiences have always been positive. This most recent time I went in and although I wasn't able to schedule an appointment ahead of time, I did make use of the wait-in-line queue on the DMV's main website. This feature allowed me to check in before physicially arriving onsite and also checking to see how busy the branch was. It was very convenient and could minimize my wait time. Also to mention, the staff member who helped me was very pleasant and patient. read more

Two months and I was still waiting for my ID to arrive so I visited DMV. Waited an hour and a half for my turn only to be told that they CANNOT issue an ID despite having ALL the VALID and LEGAL documents stated in their own website. The two female clerks I spoke to today are either misinformed, naive, or just can't be bothered to look up my pending application. Worst DMV indeed. read more

My recent experience was surprisingly not bad at all. I walked in at 8:30am without an appointment and went on the waitlist via QR code. I needed to go in to change car title. I waited at the wait area for 25 minutes before heading up to the desk. The DMV staff member assisted me under 10 minutes and I was out. The DMV is more efficient now than it was years ago. read more

I came here recently and I was honestly amazed at the superb service. I was able to get in a virtual line (no proper appointment- walk-in) in a few seconds, when I was about 4 miles away from the DMV (such a system did not exist a year ago). Isn't that incredible?! I saved like 30 mins of my life. I waited comfortably in my car and did not have to suffer outside in the cold or wait in a physical queue. The website updates were realtime and I also got a message when it was my turn. And the DMV representative at the counter was really sweet- he asked me if I'd filled an application online, I hadn't(coz I did not know I had to) so he guided me about where I should go fill it up and head straight back to him(no extra wait). All of that seemed smooth and well managed until then. However, the photo queue was pretty long and it was weird and confusing because it was side-by-side another line, for a different purpose. It took me a while to get a picture done. I am pretty hopeful they'll improve the system here as well. The recent renovations and improvements and are definitely amazing! Overall, I had a good experience except for the one glitch which happened at the back-office probably- The expiration date on my new license is about 8 months before my document expiration(say X)... The DMV representative had mentioned to me in person it would be X (as expected) but it was vaguely my birthday. I'll update my review if they fix this. read more

Went to the DMV recently to renew my driver's license. I couldn't do it online because I had to get my picture taken and take an eye test. I easily found a parking spot in the main lot at lunchtime on a Tuesday. Fortunately, I had an appointment, because there was a long line of folks with no appointment. When I checked in they gave me a number and had me take a seat in the waiting area. There were plenty of chairs available and my number was called in less than 10 minutes. The fellow that helped me was a bit robotic and barely made eye contact. He was slightly irritated with my confusion about how to pay the renewal fee and which window to go to next, but he got me straightened out. When I got to the photographer, I snuck a look at my hair using my iPhone. It looked awful. Since there was no one in line behind me, I asked him if I could have a minute to fix it and he just glared at me. After about 30 seconds of trying to make it look decent, I gave up. I'm dreading seeing my new license. The entire process took less than 30 minutes. While it wasn't a terrible experience, I hope it will be many years before I have to go back. read more

Was here twice recently to get something done (once in November/December and again in February). My situation was fairly complicated and it took awhile to get it all sorted out. But in end I was quite surprised at how patient and flexible the staff was, and we got everything done. Lines were long even very early in the morning and was able to jump the line a little bit by doing a few things online, and it did take a few hours and going in a circle a bit (no fault of the staff working there). But in the end, all's well that ends well and it ended actually much better than expectations. No complaints. read more

One of the most dreaded days of your life -root canal surgery? No, going to the CA DMV, without an appointment. I create a DMV account online to pay the driver license renewal fee and then the written test. I take a virtual test center access online, so that I don't have to take the written driving knowledge test at the DMV. I try to make an appointment through the DMV website, but the appointment button is not operational. Have to call 800-777-0133, and only during business hours. Too many rude DMV employees in the past, so they have me talking to a robot. Next appointment in Santa Clara a month away. There is an online "wait in line" feature, but I'm 44th in line at 330pm Thursday, so I skip that. I go in person without an appointment the next morning. Washed my hair, got on my best shirt, clean shaven, no nose hairs sticking out, as wanted to present myself as best as I could from the collar up. First impressions. There is a reason no politician wears a beard or mustache. People don't trust them. Want customs or TSA security to look at a trustworthy face! Arrive 740am Friday, 20 minutes before they open, Santa Clara DMV parking lot almost full. Line wraps around the building, with 70+ people ahead of me in the no-appointment line. Get in the first of four lines, this a line for to get a number. Security guard to take out line jumpers. I've seen the midday weekday lines at Santa Clara and Santa Theresa DMV around the block, rivaling Disneyland! Bring your cell phone, so that you can get your line number texted to you, and notifications of when your number comes up. I'm assigned number G-024 at 8:07am. Right thumb print taken. They make sure you have the necessary documents, before taking a seat with 70 + other people. No free wifi, and no electrical power outlets to recharge your cell phones or tablets. Restrooms available. They have 27 windows to serve you, and all of them manned this morning. 8:31am G-024 shows up on the 3 overhead TV monitors, directing me to move your ass up to window 3. I show her my screenshot of my $45.90 registration fee paid, plus screenshot of finishing the virtual test center access. She gently scolds me for not waiting 24 hours for the payment to go through as directed on the web site. Take an eye test, right thumb print, sign off some more forms. Third line in the long camera line. Right thumb print again. No, you do not get to see your picture, until it is mailed to you within the next 2 months. Fourth line for written test. But I've taken the test online, so it's just a formality of finalizing the temporary driver's license good for two months. There is a sign saying line for road test. At least it doesn't say line for road test, including all Asians! 9:12am, I walk out the door, mission accomplished. Meanwhile cars circle the limited parking lot like vultures, looking for anyone leaving. Only 90 some parking spots, and street parking limited due to high density multi story apartments and condominiums. Just hope my new driver's license arrives before my current one expires, as got to fly a few days later, and the temporary driver's license won't do for identification. read more

I despise DMVs. I've had to use services from Fremont, Santa Clara, and San Jose DMVs my whole life. Never once a pleasant experience. Everytime they were condescending, belittling, as if they are better. Not to mention all their wait times. Most parts of Asia, all DMV services can be done online. It's 2025 US DMVs are ridiculous. Why the 5 star? It's not for this DM friggin V. This review is specifically for Natalia. What could've gone side ways, started with an innocent question that could've been a sensitive subject for me. As she was taking care of my case, (yes. A DMV person took CARE of me, can you believe it?!) She lit up my day, all the while she was being professional. (YES! U READ IT CORRECTLY! PROFESSIONAL!) Thank you Natalia, it was a pleasure, (YES! Pleasure at the FRIGGIN DMV!), I appreciate your empathy and professionalism, as well as your courteousness. Why can't all DMV employees be like Natalia? Why the rest of them always treat you like they are having the worst day ever? read more

I checked in 10 minutes earlier than my appointment. The staff member checked the necessary papers and told me to wait a few minutes for the driving instructor, since I had to take a driving test. After waiting for 40 minutes I checked with the person in the window next to the one I'd originally visited, who said I needed an eye exam and no one was available to do this. I knew I had to take an eye test and brought the necessary completed forms, which had been seen by the person I saw originally; she had viewed the forms and told me to wait for the driving instructor. I waited another 20 minutes while another staff member completed a temporary license and told me there were no appointments available for an eye test until October and that I should go online to find another time slot for the eye exam. This visit was frustrating, irritating and unprofessional, in addition to wasting my entire morning. read more

The DMV continues to rear its ugly head of true inefficiency and deficiency combined. Even if you make an appointment months in advanced, you're still subjected to a 45 min wait until you can actually see a real person who will process the purpose of your visit. The person who helped us was a little gruff but reasonable. All we cared about was getting him to complete the process without any hiccups or complications. Fortunately we had no issues and were able to get through in spite of the long wait. The DMV has made some modern improvements such as providing you an alpha-numeric number directly through text messages instead of giving out those printed paper tickets. This also includes showing your current place in line. Don't hit the icon on bottom of page otherwise you might cancel your place in line. As for the wait- standing room only. Seating has always been an issue here but since you have text messaging alerts, there's no need to stare at the tv waiting for your place in line providing your cell phone coverage and signal is good. The alert on your phone is instant as when your place is announced and shown on the tv without any delays. The lady at line C for photos was very friendly although the Indian lady that opened up an additional line was also gruff and abrupt but surprisingly she process about 4 people in less than 2 min. I hope they got their photos taken properly. Their parking lot is also atrocious and your best bet is parking out on the street. Everything about this building is still catering to 70s norm and doesn't accommodate or address the long wait time and inadequate seating. That's why I only come here on an as-needed basis. You can choose to wait outside instead of breathing everyone else's breath in a packed building and catch COVID or something. We decided to stand in front of a ceiling vent just so that air is circulated. read more

unacceptable service I received at the California Department of Motor Vehicles office in Santa Clara on March 25, 2026. After waiting approximately 1.5 hours, I was called to Window 6, where I was instructed to submit an application for a driver's license replacement using the DMV's computer system. I followed these instructions exactly. I then waited an additional 30 minutes to be called back to the same window. At that point, the staff member asked for a confirmation code associated with my application. At no time prior was I informed that I needed to retain or document this code. When I explained that I did not have it, the employee refused to assist in locating my application in the system and instead instructed me to repeat the entire process from the beginning. I complied and waited again. Despite the additional wait, I was not assisted further and was ultimately redirected to another window, causing further delay and inconvenience. In total, I experienced excessive and unnecessary wait times due to a lack of guidance, poor communication, and refusal to provide reasonable assistance. I must emphasize that this was not simply an issue of inefficiency, but of unacceptable customer service and disregard for the public. I also observed similar treatment toward another customer, an African American man who stated that this was his fourth visit without resolution. This raises serious concerns about whether all customers are being treated fairly and with respect. As a taxpayer, it is unacceptable to receive this level of service from a public agency. The lack of accountability, clear communication, and basic professionalism reflects poorly on the DMV and undermines public trust. read more

I appreciate their friendliness and tenacity. 4-star with an appointment. 2.5 stars without an appointment. read more

I arrived at 7:15 am and there were around 10-15 people already waiting in front for the DMV to open their doors. Sure enough they opened for us early around 7:30 am. Because I applied online and uploaded my info, they took me right away. The employee that I was assigned to was pleasant. it was a painless experience especially since the last time I went to a DMV office in person was over 20 years prior. With my license expiring next week and limited appointment slots, I had no choice but to visit the DMV as a potential walk-in. (More on that later.) I packed a portable charger and resigned myself to having to wait several hours at the DMV. To my surprise, I was in and out within approximately an hour. On my way there, I noticed that the parking lot looked pretty full, so I chose to park in the neighborhood and walked a couple of blocks. (If you enjoy parallel parking, there are closer spots nearby.) Once I reached the entrance, I tried to keep an eye out for signage (appointments/disabled and no appointments) since reviews had mentioned it could be confusing. From outside, the lines looked relatively short. I expected them to potentially wrap around the building because of REAL ID concerns. To my delight, I could actually see and walk inside. Interestingly, the outdoor signage for the appointment line seemed to be on the right side but once I went inside, the signage was on the left. This is where "potential walk-in" becomes relevant. I had received an email with a confirmation code showing a green stop sign after completing my REAL ID license renewal paperwork online last month. According to the email, I could "report to the appointment line at the Start Here window" for an "express experience." In other words, the email was suggesting that scheduling an appointment was unnecessary. I decided to risk it since some netizens (specifically Redditors) claimed it was true. I went to the oddly empty appointment line, showed the DMV employee my confirmation code, and received a ticket number via text message after telling her my cell phone number. I waited for about 40 minutes before it was my turn to be served. I had a great experience with Patty at Window 23. She was very friendly and helpful. Since I already had my REAL ID, I didn't have to show her my documents. I just needed to verify my information, scan my thumbprint, and pay. She directed me to line C to take my photograph after gaving me a receipt and temporary license. Once I took my photograph and provided a signature, I was free to leave. Overall, I prefer going to DLPCs over a regular DMV for efficiency's sake. However, I had a pretty good experience considering how much regular DMVs have to handle. Since my last visit maybe a decade ago, I did notice some technical upgrades, such as contactless payment and better cameras (according to Patty). Your experience at a DMV will probably vary based on whom you interact with and your readiness where paperwork is concerned. Some employees were a little more direct or curt than others. If it's within Santa Clara DMV's control, I'd really like it if they improve their signage. The signs are a little small and it wasn't really clear to me if I was in the right line. I also wasn't completely sure when it would be my turn since the appointment and walk-in lines were right next to each other and the employees at the windows were serving customers from both. (Honestly, I still question whether I went to the correct line since it was completely empty. No one yelled at me, so I guess it was fine?) Otherwise, I highly recommend completing your paperwork ahead of time online, especially if you are trying to get a REAL ID. When I last checked, appointments weren't available until August. Thanks to the new ticketing system, you can also wait outside until you get a text message saying it's your turn. They also give you a link to their website to see your spot in line, but it didn't work for me when I was there. read more

Waiting for my wife and daughter to pull up at the DMV line, and the employee Glenda proceeded to yell at me for standing under the over hang. There is a sign that says no visiting, but not no standing or waiting. Glenda was rude, and very unprofessional. She was the only drive instructor and I feel bad for those customers, especially the ones that have to take their driving instruction from her. Extremely Unprofessional and Disturbing DMV Driving Test Experience - Santa Clara, CA (May 5, 2025 at 2:45 PM) I'm writing on behalf of my best friend and her son, who had a deeply upsetting experience during his behind-the-wheel driving test at the Santa Clara, CA DMV on May 5, 2025, at 2:45 PM. The examiner, Jacqueline, was immediately curt and dismissive, not just to my friend and her son, but to nearly everyone waiting in line. Her attitude was tense, unwelcoming, and unprofessional from the start. Out of concern, my friend advised her son to try to avoid Jacqueline, but he was eager to take the test and didn't want to miss his opportunity. As he was just about to pull onto the street, my friend could hear Jacqueline yelling inside the vehicle. Moments later, the car returned unexpectedly, Jacqueline had abruptly ended the test. Her son later explained what happened: "I looked both ways before pulling out. It was clear. There was one car far back on the right, so I went. Suddenly, the instructor started yelling, 'Stop! Stop! Stop!' and grabbed the brake. I was freaking out, 'What did I do?' I didn't understand." This was his first driving test. Rather than being evaluated calmly and fairly, he was left shaken and discouraged. To make matters worse, another DMV driving instructor who was nearby casually mentioned that Jacqueline "fails a lot of people." My friend couldn't help but wonder if her son's ethnicity influenced the way he was treated. First-time drivers deserve patience, professionalism, and fair treatment. Unfortunately, this experience offered none of those things. If you are taking your test at this DMV, especially for the first time beware of Jacqueline. 1 star. Strongly disappointed. We urge the Santa Clara DMV to investigate this examiner's conduct. read more

The employee who was taking photos for the ID/driver license gave me a bad time because of my hair. I tried to pull it back away from my ears but it just kept going back to the way it was and I couldn't control it. When she took my photo, she just gave me a bad look saying I only get one photo taken and my hair wasn't proper. I have never had this issue at other DMV locations and my hair was usually the same way. I would rather go to the Los Gatos or San Jose (Alma) DMV. Also too, this location was very overcrowded. It's the DMV... of course it sucks. You'll be here all day, appointment or not, and you'll have a very bad time. I'm not sure if they think it's efficient to funnel people through 4 or 5 queues over the course of many hours just to get their license, but I can assure you, it's not. read more

I've been to this location multiple times over the years. One of my kids took the written test and didn't pass the first time. That day, the line was extremely long even with a 2:30 PM appointment. By the time we made it to the window, they said she couldn't test because it was after 4 PM. We had to wait through a slow-moving line, which wasn't our fault, and once I pointed that out, they allowed her to test. When we came back for her second attempt, the staff member who took her paper said "again?" in a rude tone. She was already nervous, so that was unprofessional and unnecessary. Because of the experience, we ended up going to another location for the behind-the-wheel test. My son eventually took his behind-the-wheel at this location and had a much better experience. His tester, Carolina, gave clear directions with enough notice and provided helpful feedback afterward. He passed, and I was relieved, especially after hearing mixed stories from others. Overall, this DMV can be frustrating and slow, and some staff can be rude, but there are also staff like Carolina who make the process much easier. There was also a woman at check in that was super friendly and helpful, but I didn't catch her name. She even wished my son luck for his test. read more

They were a joy to talk to and in that process, I was less anxious and more relaxed. I imagine that if I chose a different DMV, a different day, a different time slot, or if I got a different proctor, I may not have been able to pass. You'll find this review under both the Los Gatos DMV and the Santa Clara DMV. I think the comparison helps to give a distinction between my ratings for both. I have been to both locations for many services: having my kids take their driver's written/behind-the-wheel test, change of address, change of name, license renewal, update car registration, and change to Real ID. I live closer to the SC location so it's more convenient to go to there due to time constraints or traffic. But EVERY time I've gone to SC, I've run into some kind of issue - lack of parking, long lines, impatient service from DMV staff, and poor management of customer flow. I am mindful of the fact that there's a LOT more people who come to the SC location and it's inevitable that there will be some confusion, so I try to be empathetic with the staff and wait patiently through the chaos. But the last straw was when I got a condescending remark from one of them when asking them to repeat the last sentence they said. I wish they were understanding that I was straining to hear them from behind a protective plastic panel and it was very noisy from the large crowd. If I have the time, I'll go all the way to the LG location. The staff there are patient and kind, yet firm (I'm okay with that given the necessity to be on top of legal documents). When my daughter failed her first attempt at the written driver's test, the lady monitoring the test station was very sweet and said some encouraging words to her and handed her a booklet that would help for next time (and she passed!). Another thing I noticed about the staff at LG, is that they actually smile and a few have thrown in a joke/laugh to lighten the mood. Going forward, I'll FIND the extra time to go to the Los Gatos location if ever I need any DMV services. read more

This is a warning for anyone who's drivers license is just about to expire and you are looking into converting that into both a Real ID/DL. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT pay for your renewal fee online prior to coming into the DMV. I made the payment online [Tuesday 10/05/21] including a service fee and ended up being charge the entire amount all over again [Friday 10/08/21] during my physical visit. Regardless of having proof that I paid, having a screenshot of the invoice number, and being willing to show that the amount was deducted from my account, the clerk told me I had to pay and informed me that I "could" request for a refund. WHAT A LOAD OF BS!! A visit that should have been simply to verify my documents required for the real ID ended up with double charging and no reasonable explanation as to why this was the case since I had already paid!!! Ontop of it all, I didn't even receive any renewal notice from them regarding my license being on the verge of expiring, I just so happened to check my card. We all know people are constantly expressing their hate for the DMV & the sh*t customer service that's provided but today really takes the cake. This place and it's employees suck so damn bad. To the lady at window #6 @ around 3pm on 10/8/21, I was ticket number F155. If you don't like the DMV or people, this is your office. It's nice that this DMV is close to restaurants. If you've had a bad day here, there's a Walgreens nearby. If you've had a really bad day, there's a Starbucks across El Camino. Try the drive-thru. read more

I basically waited in the non-appointment line until I was redirected to another line (after 30 minutes) to get to a window (after 30 minutes) where I thought "Oh finally, I'll be helped!" Not to mention the abundance of sanitizer that was available at every corner. In terms of improvements, the seating area could definitely benefit being upgraded from the vintage plastic seats where you'd basically be touching shoulders with whomever is next to/behind you. And surfaces could benefit from regular sanitizing :(. read more
