It's too bad that people have such awful preconceived notions about the DMV. Many (perhaps) good people turn into hate-filled little monsters as soon as they walk through the door. I've seen it again and again. Cross the threshold and suddenly every bad thing ever imagined about government; every passing conspiracy theory absorbed like water in the desert of ignorance; every feeling of self-righteousness; every crockpot philosophy of taxation; every last tinge of warm, fuzzy, oozing ego trip that has passed through their mouths - bubbles up like some repressed Freudian ogre that simply can't be bothered to control itself. The -customers- of the Auburn DMV, far more than the employees, disappoint. It's so easy to kick back and take out all your aggression on the clearly captive crew that works behind the counter. Easy, easy, easy like pie. Too bad it's still wrong. I do not think ALL the customers of the Auburn DMV are like this. But a certainly disturbing proportion are, enough to make mention here on Yelp. The -worst- part about waiting at the DMV is having to hear the self-righteous, sh***y attitudes of the people around me. Sorries. I moved here from the South within the last two years. In my former DMV, there was no air conditioning, there was half as much room with three times as many people and a fifth of the government budget to work out the mess. Here ye, here ye, people of California. You're spoiled rotten so bad you don't even see it. Nothing wrong with air conditioning, of course. In fact, it's not something to be taken for granted. Freon isn't forever, folks. True, I can't relate to whatever emotional baggage the 'poor' people of the Gold Country experience, but it may be time to begin working through that. To hear people whine, you'd think the DMV employees were responsible for helping people work through their hangups, soothing their frayed nerves, assisting them in their quest to get whatever they want and how they want it. You'd think. But you'd be wrong. It's extremely easy to justify childish, insulting behavior on the basis of not liking "the government." Big bankers destroy the entire F***g economy, people go into banks with a smile on their face as though that whole "whoopsy daisy we stole the last bit of American wealth" didn't ever happen. A DMV employee who tries to stay polite despite being spit on by a neverending sea of people with chips on their shoulders, and OMG. Don't just loose your cool, throw a temper tantrum. Go big or go home, I guess. People go into the DMV to renew their license to b**ch, moan, stroke their pent-up egos, and generally sh*t all over the people they've decided it's okay to sh*t all over. Here's to the hard-working employees of the DMV who sit down and do what must be the world's crappiest job. Here's to the people that withstand daily death threats, sexual harassment, racist and misogynist piggery, and the cussing of people who never stopped and considered theyre among the most privileged people on this planet, standing in line waiting to inherit their 'right' to pollute the atmosphere just a little bit more. You people are disgusting..... Every last one of you! I sent my 16 y/o daughter in today to handle a simple transaction and you sent her out the door crying and couldn't help her because she "signed in the wrong place". When a kid comes in you should treat them like they're YOUR KID! We're supposed to be working toward that same goal here. You guys CREATE problems, make an easy transaction difficult, this causes DELAYS, which leads to FINES. In the end that's all that matters to you people FINES and REVENUE. Create fines so you can further your reason to exist! The Auburn DMV office is not trained on registering boats or boat trailers. I purchased a Hobie Cat, and went in to register it, and after waiting 2 hours the clerk informed me that sail boats don't need to be registered. Of course this is 100 percent wrong, as this is a 16 foot long boat, but she refused to do anything to help me register the boat. When I asked about the boat trailer, and attempted to turn in the Nevada license plate that was on it, I was asked 'how do we know you didn't steal it?' I'll be the first to admit that the paperwork and forms are complicated, but when DMV office workers give out wrong info (you don't need to register a sailboat), and accuse the customer of stealing, I think it's time they do some remedial training, starting with customer skills. Next time I'll drive down to Rocklin and try my luck there. read more

I scheduled myself into the Auburn DMV using the dmv.ca.gov website (a very well-designed website, I must say) because it had the only availability in the time I had allotted. I drove up to Auburn and finally stumbled upon it despite my mapquest directions. "Stumbled upon" because it is located in a very small strip mall with even smaller amounts of parking. The door to the DMV was already open, because the line was 7 people long, which was too long for the space between door and counter. I do not fault the DMV office employees for this, but I do fault them for treating everyone in line like they were being booked into jail. They likely feel jailed themselves in this DMV That Time or California Forgot. The credit/debit payment system was down, and so cash or checks were necessary at first, which raised a lot of hackles with people used to using payment cards, because, well, it's 2013. I had a check with me, but since I foolishly made it out for the wrong amount before arriving, I was in the same boat as all others. I therefore offered to be the guinea pig for the post re-booting of the system, which brought me to the head of the appointment pack (I'm tactical that way) Unfortunately, this also put me with a checked-out employee very similar in appearance to April Ludgate of "Parks and Recreation" , without all of her positive giddiness.(sigh) A quick snap of the photo for my license, which I was not allowed to see and thus do over, and I was on my way. At least they have the speed of operations right. I rank this DMV dead last in my dealings with Roseville, Sacramento, Rocklin (the old bldg) DMVs. It's counter-intuitive that this should be so in the fresh air of the Gold Country, but it's true. read more

The man behind the counter was very rude to a lot of people. He kept telling people that they had to start all over again in their paperwork because they made a mistake. He belittled another man in front of the entire place. He has zero tact with handling people. Heads up to our people hiring these applicants. They need to understand that people they encounter may be dyslexic or have a hard time writing. Some people have tremors and shake a little. Some people may be just learning responsibility and they should guide and coach instead of belittle and talk down too them. The wait is probably the DMVs largest complaint. 20 of us sat and waiting while one lady was helped repeatedly without having to re line up, unlike the rest that had to re line up after asking a question and walking away. This DMV They put the *D" DISCOURTEOUS. Our experience has been a disaster. A simple transaction made to be an horrific experience. Rude service. Nikki the auditor made us feel so uncomfortable. She raised her voice at me. We get the feeling from her aggresive attitude because she is asked to help and once she reaches the counter that she is entitled by her management. She sent me home with additional paperwork to have filled out. My second experience was a shameful one. She had me sign something. She didn't quite explain the importance of placement of signature. She then sent me home with more paperwork. She states; "JUST HAVE ******* FILL THIS OUT". They did. Only to be told by mail that we owed 15.00. Paid the 15.00. Personally delivered and ask for Nikki to make sure we did things correctly. Nikki wouldn't come out. They all claimed that they couldn't find our paperwork. For the third time we were sent home to start the process all over. We recommend online INCOMPETENT read more

Set an appointment over the phone, showed up 10 mins early, left in 20 minutes. Way to go DMV Auburn!

I needed to confirm my appt time, because they had changed it by phone. Couldn't find a method to to do that. I have a confirmation #, but no way to use it to get appt time. Ugh! read more
