Love DMI! Any time we're doing a DIY project and need to buy/rent tools, materials, etc., DMI is our go-to hardware store. I'm usually in the role of laborer and gofer, so when my husband sends me there to grab things that I'm completely unfamiliar with while he continues working, the staff is always super friendly and patient with me. Every time I go there, I'm pleasantly surprised to find a new item that I didn't know they sold. It helps that the store is so close that it's quicker for me to ride my bike there than drive, but we strive to support local and DMI is worth it! read more

If you are someone like me, you are constantly doing little diy projects around your house and don't need tons of materials. Sometimes the Lowe's and Home Depot's can get extremely overwhelming and often times hard to find help from an employee. I have recently stopped going to Lowe's in Havertown and solely go to DMI on haverford rd! They have anything I could possibly need for the projects around my house. Lumber, paint, hardware, screws and nails, tools, gardening supplies, rental equipment for those larger projects, you name it! They also do chair and table rentals if you are throwing a party and need some extras! It really does feel like a family when you walk in there. There are numerous employees walking around, constantly asking how they can assist and make your experience at DMI better than it already is. From large to small, DMI has all that you could possibly need at a great price. Give it a try next time, I'm sure you will be back! read more

This is more than a hardware store - it's a wealth of helpful information. The staff is eager to assist with any project and I'm always able to get what I need regardless of the project I'm working on. I shop here in a professional capacity as a Realtor and Contractor, but it's my "go-to" hardware store for my personal home improvement projects too. I called on Friday afternoon for a small table and four chairs. They accommodated my request for a really reasonable price. Brian helped me and when I arrived showed me a variety of options. I choose them and he even helped me with determining the best adhesives for Wall art and pictures. He had a smile from beginning to the end of our transaction. He even carried the chairs and placed them in my truck. My wife and I were working on a site without access to a bathroom. Because we like to support local stores, we went to DMI Home Supply in Ardmore for a dryer vent hose and clamp. Big mistake. One of the people working there directed us to a bathroom with a sign indicating it was for employees. When I started to enter the bathroom, a woman called out to me from the other side of the store. I couldn't hear clearly, so I approached her. She was announcing to everyone that that was the employee bathroom and I should use the one in the building next door. As we walked from one building to the next, she scolded me like a child the entire time. If you want to avoid public humiliation from a petty establishment that is strangely protective of its bathrooms, I recommend going to Lowe's 3 miles away with better prices and customer service. This is one of those home supply places struggling to compete with Home Depot and Lowes. They all seem to have two characteristics compared to the big box stores. The first and the good news is that it's much easier to find someone to talk to. Not only that but the person you find usually knowledgeable. The second and the bad news is the variety of product available is very limited compared to the big guys. So what do I do? I'm one of those guys that obtains a lot of my knowledge from the net. If I want something that costs substantial $$ I'll do my research and grab it at a big box store. If I want something little I'll opt for the convenience of one of the little guys. These guys are just fine for routine small items. Friendly people and it's easy to check out. The parking lot can get a little cramped at times. Generally it's an OK place. read more

We really want to support local businesses and avoid the big box stores. But when I came in with both my kids and half the staff had their masks down - only to put them on as they approached us - it made us uncomfortable. If you're standing waiting around for customers and are breathing into the space where they walk in, you're not really helping. I work a job that requires me to wear a mask 100% of the time. It's not that hard. Happy to improve my review if changes are made. Otherwise, they always seem to have what we need and are able to point its location out quickly. As a 40 something woman, I wanted to review after reading some other comments about them being misogynistic, etc. I am a fairly handy woman, have almost completely renovated a house by myself (not plumbing or electrical, but I've ripped out walls, installed cabinets, tiled a whole bathroom, etc). However, I learn as I go, I don't know everything, and with each new project it is a learning experience. I am also an artist and come up with strange construction ideas/ projects. I appear to be a normal, middle age woman (normally feminine). I have my radar up for men in hardward/rental stores that assume you know nothing. I have been ready for it, because I do admit that there is a aura of machoness when first walking in here. However, I have not experienced anything negative here in that regard. They have treated my strange requests with interest and are helpful in finding the thing I need, or suggesting where to find it elsewhere. They have cut wood to size for me ( i think with out charge, but can't remember) with a friendly attitude. Once I rented a roto-tiller from them. I didn't really know how to use it (and never had too much experience with lawn mowers, etc) . Long story- but I was doing something wrong when using it, and caused it to temporarily not work ( that I learned later). Horrible customer service. It was an emergency. We we called them and asked if they carried a certain kind of a hinge for a steel door and they said yes, "We carried that brand". So we drove for an hour and guess what they did not have the brand hinge or anything like the hinge we needed! It was a hinge that is commonly used on a steel door, where one side is rounded and the other is a rectangle. read more

If you don't understand other reviewers comments about this store's staff being condescending, you should shop at the Ricklin's in Narberth and you would know the difference. While DMI has a reasonable selection of hardware and lumber, their staff definitely have a macho attitude about service, and I have to believe that it comes from above, i.e. the owner. While they are not out and out rude, when you ask where something is, they point you to the right aisle as if it was an imposition on their time. When you ask for help in searching for the right size nut in stainless or metric, for example, their limitations become immediately apparent. They know maybe a little bit more that the interchangeable clerks at Lowe's, but not really much more, and they definitely project the attitude that they'd rather be doing something else. Poor service and attitude can sometimes be hard to define or pin down, but I had a ready comparison in Ricklin's, where the staff takes an interest in you and the hardware, something that is impossible to fake. I go here because its close and convenient, so I suck it up for small items, but it always leaves a bad taste when I go there. As far as shopping local, these guys aren't really hurting. They've really expanded their service to include rentals of all sorts, all at their higher price. read more

Pros: Pretty decent stock, especially for the unique kinds of items found in the older homes in the neighborhoods that surround the store. Nice selection of lumber and decorative moulding & millwork. Cons: Here's where the 1-star rating comes: condescending, sometimes even mean-spirited customer service - especially if you don't look like a professional contractor. You'll get a lot of mansplaining and patronizing tones, and usually pay double what Lowe's or HD charge for the privilege. I know there are other neighborhood folks who swear by this place, but after multiple encounters with a wide range of dudes who think they know everything, I've chosen to drive a few miles to Lowe's (instead of walking a few steps to this place). Normally I would have given DMI 4 or 5 stars, but on my last visit the product I purchased was marked at $16....when it was rung up at the cashier, it became more than $23 with tax...I was told they are too busy to keep the listed (labels on shelves) prices up to date. Cashier was extremely rude, the only thing missing was that he didn't tell me T. S.!! Let the buyer beware. I have been a frequent and long time customer.....they need to lose the attitude. DMI still does tool rentals! Not only do they rent them, but the staff is also knowledgeable and can offer insight as to additional materials that may be needed to do the job right. This comes in very handy for the many DIY projects that I seem to get myself into. They also are kind enough to always offer to carry/load large items into my vehicle. It only takes 10 seconds to realize that you are not in a big box store.They always have what I need or are able to point me in the right direction. This place is kind of awful. I specifically signed up to yelp to caution others. So it's a local store. I like to shop local. They clearly know that this is their only advantage, cause you walk in to a sign on the door that says "you know what shopping at Amazon does for your local schools and community? Nothing." That negative, entitled attitude characterizes this establishment. I note that most of the people saying that the service is great here are dudes, because I've gotten pretty awful treatment whenever I shop here. Today was the last straw. I walk in, and hear one clerk remark to another, "jeez, what is it, women's week or something?". They both proceed to do nothing and ignore me as I look for the part I needed. I had to actually interrupt the dude staring off into space at the register to pay. Should've just walked out with my overpriced tools. I decided not to buy the additional 60$ + of lumber I was planning on getting, or anything else ever, for that matter. I'm a contractor myself and I've sent these guys business when people ask where the nearest hardware store is but I'm sending them to HD or Mapes next time. Go there instead. read more

Found this place through google. Lived in this area for years and never knew about DMI. I only need to rent 10 chairs, but there was such a hassle with other rental companies. The process at DMI was quick and easy. I arrived, rented the chairs, got them put in my car and left...all within 10 minutes. Dropping them off was even easier. Nice staff as well. We just adopted a puppy, and wanted to build a pen for her to run around. Today we went to several different home stores looking for 5' rebar. None to be found. Feeling frustrated, I called DMI, who said they only had 10' rebar. When I first asked if they would be willing to cut it for me, they said no. I think they could hear the frustration in my voice, because next thing I know the gentleman said "Hold on a minute let me see what I can do." Sure enough, he came back on the line and said that not only would they be happy to cut the rebar for me, but would do it for no extra charge. High prices and what I feel was very judgmental treatment of my being a woman and buying tools. We had great experience with true value for some things, however true value doesn't dell the lumber and drywall and such. My husband and I try and shop local and we have not gone in here since, beatty lumber isn't bad compared to this. However, we find ourselves regretfully using Home Depot over DMI. Interest free line of credit, better prices (obviously) but the big difference is at Home Depot i don't feel put down for being a woman in a lumber department. My father and brothers are all builders, you shouldn't judge a book by its cover. read more

I've been happy with this place. It's bigger than a mom & pop corner hardware store, but not as big as Home Depot or Lowes so you should manage your expectations with that in mind. The staff has always been more helpful than expected and far easier to find help than I was used to. One guy even gave me advise and tips on the project I was about to do that really saved me a lot of headaches had I not known. Much appreciated.
