When I set out to find Rocky's Burger Bus, the last thing I expected to find was a fresh produce market sharing the same parking lot. But there it was! DJ Market, a little open-air market that I'm used to finding in a warm climate like South America or Indonesia, not in a place like Calgary. There's something about the smell of fresh air mixed with garden fresh fruits and vegetables. It's something no grocery store will ever be able to emulate. I walked around the market breathing in fresh gulps of air. They carry just about every kind of mainstream vegetable, carrots, tomatoes, onions, and so on. The assortment of fruit had be perusing the bins to take a few bags home-peaches, oranges, nectarines, the variety of apples was most impressive! You can even buy nuts in bulk. The prices seemed reasonable, and, unlike other markets, this little one says they're open 7 days a week. Perfect! read more

I love this open air produce market. Friendly atmosphere, local produce directly from small farmers and B.C fruit orchards, small family run business. This is my go to spot during the summer for our groceries and it doesn't disappoint. The variety of fruit and vegetables is impressive. The prices of locally produced fruits and vegetables are very competitive and skips the excessive packaging (less for my recycle bin or garbage). Just brought home a box of blueberries, some in-the-pod fava beans, a bunch of onions, and a big bag of BC cherries. Yum! read more

I love visiting this market. The staff are friendly and helpful and the produce is fresh. I visit during the summer for our fruit and vegetables-I like knowing that the food is locally/regionally sourced. Just bought some fresh blueberries, radishes, peas, herbs, candy cane beets and a flat of eggs. Very happy customer. read more

I stopped shopping at this market several years ago, first because of the poor attitude of the female owner/mother and second because of the quality of their products. Her husband helped with handling produce and his hands were absolutely filthy, which I brought to her attention one time - that went over well! They may be less expensive than others, but personally I prefer quality over quantity and dealing with a friendly human being. My last straw several years ago was when the "mother" was yelling at me about looking over the fresh peas and being picky. I don't reward her bad behaviour by putting money into her bank account and clearly, it may be past due for her to retire, as paying customers don't seem to make her very happy. read more

DJ's is almost closed for the season and thus my fruit and veggie consumption will invariably decline over the winter as I am stuck with my local Co-op and Safeway's produce. (Sad face.) A fantastic fruit and veg stand with predominantly local (AB & BC) produce, DJ's has everything at very reasonable prices. I asked them if they had access to local chickens - within a few weeks, they had fresh Hutterite chickens. I also love the fresh farm eggs and cheap, cheap fresh herbs. If you do any canning, soup/pie making, or love mojito's - who doesn't? (Bags of mint for $1.49) DJ's is the place to go. Often, they will have weekly specials and sell cases of berries, peaches, etc. This is a family business and they are very pleasant to deal with. Any time I've ever asked them if they have something, they'll either get it for me, or let me know why they don't have it and when I can expect it. Called to get some answers to make sure I could coordinate coming and getting something and try them out for the first only to be left with a bad impression by being greeted by a short frustrated lady basically not letting me talk or get out what I wanted to ask and yelling i have to go i don't have time for this and hanging up on me only to continue to ignore the phone when I tried to call again. Am very disappointed if they think this acceptable customer service. I guess they don't want locals supporting them because I don't feel like giving them my business which I was going to buy alot for canning. But this was extremely rude behavior read more

Very disappointed. I bought one orange, 2 field cukes, a bag of 3 red onions,2 bananas Sunday Sept 10. The cukes were tasteless, the red onions rotting on one thus far, the orange is rotting on one end. I won't be back. Shame on me! I had forgotten My similar experience a couple of years ago. Fruit fly infested, sad fruit. Prices for an avacado more expensive than Superstore. Not worth the effort in time, energy or money to support this small business. read more

I too experienced the same mannerism from the son I then handed him a rotten peach that I was trying to get to when he rudely told me not to throw the peaches the owner lady came and said she didn't need my business I wasn't going to mention the 4 pounds of bad cakes out of 10 pounds but had to unload at this point she has actually done me a favour by telling me that she doesn't want my business now my wife will stop saying you're buying 2nd grade produce read more

My wife and I have been using this market for a number of years and today the owner's son was extremely rude, planned to purchase $300 worth of produce and we left, didn't purchase anything. I will never ("NEVER") purchase or return to DJ market after this negative experience. My experience today was very similar to a previous review about a month ago - "The owner very young son worn me not to throw the apple .I said I did not throw it. He started to yell at me, that I'm lying and ordered to leave the store. I never experienced such a horrible way to speak to a customer. It happened to me, can happen to you to. I am a 75 year old woman." read more

The owner is very rude and aggressive. Berries which I bought from DJ Market in the small baskets, were rotten at the bottom of the basket.

i have been a long time customer here at DJs but this summer has gone way down hill. I've heard of people being mis charged and didn't think much of it but I have caught several mistakes recently. I've noticed on several visits large bins of rotting fruits and veggies for sale. They were selling commercial produce for much of the summer as well. Today however I've reached the limit and will no longer be returning nor recommending this market to anyone. Upon making my normal weekly visit I needed a couple dozen eggs for a project. I needed large shells, so I sorted through the eggs and chose a couple cartons with the largest eggs. The owner thought I was switching eggs around in cartons and started yelling at me from across the market that I couldn't do so. I told her I was just picking out cartons that I wanted and she said ok. I then got into line and she continued to complain loudly to other customers and staff. She then looked at me and told me she was going to charge double as other markets charge more. The lady ahead of me in line turned to me and told me I should just leave and not pay the extra. I've know the owner and her son for several years and thought ok, she's having a bad day. When I got up to her to pay I told her that I didn't appreciate her chastising me in front of everyone and that she didn't need to be so rude especially to a longtime customer. She proceeded to tell me how they only make 5 cents profit on the eggs and on and on and on, then started telling the man behind me as well. It was such a mess I told her she can keep the eggs and I would no longer shop there. read more

For an area such as Calgary, DJs really is a rarity. The produce is local (As local as it can be out here in the boonies), and the owner always knows an estimate of when products will come in. She can be kind of scary sometimes, but in that way your mom can be scary when you're rummaging in the fridge ten minutes before dinner time. She knows her regulars and she knows her stuff, and it's always a treat to come by and have her wave at you even when you can see she's busy as hell. If you want fresh Canadian produce at a good price, then this is really the only place in Calgary to go. If you can't tolerate the atmosphere here, though, I wouldn't recommend travelling to South-East Asia. This isn't a place where the staff are going to coddle you, they're too busy bringing in their new supply, but if you know what you're looking for and don't mind being elbow to elbow with wasps and bins of produce, then this is really somewhere you want to go. read more
