The one star rating isn't for any of the vendors visited, rather for the mice scurrying around the booths. Saw more than one in the time we were there, and when I mentioned it to a vendor, her reply was "oh yeah, they are all over the building!" For a place that's got food and baked goods, an infestation of mice is a definite reason to not return. read more

Very cool place. There's probably more than 50 independent vendors here. There's all kinds of goods here, not limited to just food. There's also an excellent food court with food for every taste and preference. Definitely worth checking out. read more

A great market in Calgary. Puts the farmer's market in San Antonio to shame. Lots of vendors selling local fruit and vegetables. We bought some baby carrots that were so fresh. Don't think supermarket. Think carrots harvested really young. Crisp and sweet. We also bought snap peas and local eggs. We sampled a lot of olive oil and balsamic vinegars and bought some of those. We checked out a cured meat vendor and bought landjagger, olives, and a charcuterie mix. So many great food vendors as well. Wish we came a little later for lunch. And of course we had to buy kettle corn on the way out. read more

Located just off of Blackfoot Trail only open Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday. It more on the high end as Farmers markets go. You really have to look to find deals. The food court is the cats (beep) can't say the word. LOL from Asian, Indian, Greek, burgers, desserts, Foothills ice cream just to mention some of many kiosks. I was always told if the place is busy or has a line up you know it's good food. It's true this place had both and we stepped in line and waited our turn. Yes, We settled for Ukrainian that's where the line was!! Cabbage roll, schnitzel, roasted potatoes with sauerkraut, sour cream topped with bacon, bits, and veggies. I'm so full!! Was so good everything tasted delicious! Super clean and well organized farmers market! Love the weekend buskers and the variety of local vendors. I've picked up some things like candied salmon (shipped from Richmond, BC), a variety of great cheeses (we loved the 40 & 18 month aged comté), salamis, red velvet almonds, and pear vanilla croissant. Lots of the vendors were also generous with their samples. I didn't have the belly to try any of the food spots, but I noticed a ton of variety! Only thing I wasn't impressed on the Sunday I went was the fruits weren't as fresh looking and were priced quite high. read more

Here are our FIVE star FAPS: Food: Diverse and delicious! There are a multitude of vendors and food/drink options! We tried two today: Wayne's Bagels and Yum Bakery! We would highly recommend both options! The bagels were a savory breakfast bite (see pictures)! We both got them on the Rosemary bagel. The pastries were also delicious! Our favorite was the seasonal single savory croissant! We think the cinnamon bun would have been better if it were heated! Prices for food were reasonable. Ambience: Cute, friendly, and family/ friends orientated! Friends and families seem to convene here! There is a little play area for small children; the bathrooms/washrooms are clean; and there is an abundance of seating options. No one seems to have to wait to find a seat! Parking: FREE and a huge lot! We came at 10:00 AM, and it was still a semi-empty lot! Service: Everyone is so friendly! Even if you don't buy anything from their stand, they are welcoming and happy to answer any questions. A happy place leads to a happy meal and gathering spot! We love visiting farmers markets and this one did not disappoint. Even though it was a ways away from our downtown hotel, we're glad we drove out to this location (they have another location in Western Calgary). Everything looked clean, neat and delicious. In addition to vendors with fruit, produce and meat, there were also vendors with arts and crafts, beverages and gift items. Oh, and there were all kinds of eateries in the food hall area -- definitely like a mall food court but way cooler. We ended up buying cherries and grabbing a smoothie. Across the parking lot there were also other establishments, including a cute little bakery. read more

So convenient compares to some of the farmer's market that only opens on Saturday morning only! You can find bakeries (for humans and pets), farm fresh produces, coffee roastery and more! One of the most diverse and truly local farmers market I've ever been too. Highly recommend a visit with an empty stomach - some of Calgary's greatest local gems have stalls here. I recommend the bolognese from Forno di Fontaine and a bagel from Wayne's Bagels. Phil & Sebastian also has a location at the west farmers market, with delectable donuts if you want something sweet too (recommend the cereal milk, the mango & coconut). There was live music (a busker) when I visited and just overall an awesome atmosphere! read more

I absolutely love this farmer market. The atmosphere is incredible and they do so many fun events such as this past weekend when I went to celebrate fathers day. Some of the stands at the farmer market donate free things for fathers. Mostly meat things such as beef jerky, pepperoni or meatball samples and Fathers received a free 15 minute massage. The parking used to be tricky (as I see most people are having there reviews on that) until I discovered the back parking lot and now I am set :) read more

I bought one of their regular roasted vegetable lasagnas for $18.50 to cook at home. Do not buy!!! it is almost all just pasta, cheese, and tomato sauce, so tasteless. We opened up the layers to look for the vegeatables and all we found was a couple of TINY pieces of zucchini and mushroom which were all down on one side, so no veggies on the other half. the ingredients list 10 different veggies but all we found were those 2. if you want the best vegetable lasagna pick up either a frozen or fresh one at Mercato's. iI has lots of LARGE pieces of many different veggies like portobello mushroom an is even tastier than their meat lasagna. Plus it costs $20. which is only a couple of more dollars more than the Soffritto one. read more

This farmers' market is a sizeable mix of cheap and expensive, local and imported, fresh foods and some delish, niche cuisine. In no particular order, my favourite things are: The face painter when the kids are with me The balloon animal dude (not always there) Hot dogs from Franks & Mabel's Smoothies from Magarita's Back bacon and chicken by the 10lb box from Spraggs meat shop The sweet kale salad from the Cherry pit The non-alcoholic fruit wines from Souto farms Varieties of honey and hot sauce from Beeland Dim Sum from Shanghai fine foods Plain butter crepe from La Creperie Peppers and tomatoes from Gull Valley greenhouses Maple syrup and maple butter from Taste of Quebec Loose leaf tea from Totalitea AND Silkroad spices are here too Despite this long list of favorites, there's a longer list of good stores I haven't tried out yet. There's a lot to see, buy and do in this little corner of Calgary. I like the atmosphere food, and groceries. Vendors are mostly nice! Kent at sage beef is knowledgeable, friendly and great at helping me out when on a budget!! I love talking to Bernard Callebeau( spelling wrong) at the chocolate shop he makes fantastic treats!! It is pricy for groceries but high quality and hormone, steroid free meat in my opinion is well worth it!! Crafts are beautiful and they have variety of options! The CFM is a good venue with lots of choices and nutritional possibilities. What do I find best there? The brisket shop run by a big guy who does a pretty good job with the meat flavours n texture. Analog Coffee that serves really good lattes, some good pastries and decent whole beans. The crepe breakfasts that can light up your day, even though the sugar content might be high. The Blush Organic produce store surrounded by others that are right up there. I think most of the meat shops are great, but tend to be super pricey. Silk Road spice shop with the specialty usual and unusual spices that will help zing things up. The Ukrainian breakfast/lunch stop that has well-made pirogues, cabbage rolls and sausages. What to avoid? Simple Simon Pies. I have a friend that worked there, and knows what they put into their soups and pies. Not just boring, but just not all that great in any department. While working there, my friend ate their stuff for about a week before she stopped completely. Once one helps prepare the ingredients and witnesses the general confusion in a poorly run outfit like Bob's, little wonder that the food soon takes on that same slack quality and tastelessness. read more

The Calgary Farmers Market is an upscale year round occupant of the Currie Barracks in the southwest. The vast warehouse space is filled with the wares of local farmers, meat producers, craftsmen and artisans, food vendors and buskers, all housed in quaint wooden stalls. Because it's local, you're getting your produce at its peak, so the quality and flavours are far superior to that of the "ho-hum" they sell at the grocery store. It's always busy whenever I'm there on the weekends, so I've learned to take the first spot I see in the enormous gravel parking lot and hoof it. It's a great place for young and old alike. Most vendors serve up tons of samples to tempt you with their goods. If you still have some room after all that eating, the Market has a diverse food court serving up a variety of tasty creations made by locals - Indian, Greek, Chinese, - you name it. I try and get down here a couple times a month to pick up produce, and you should too. But do it quick before it moves from the current location to somewhere deep in the southeast. read more

The Calgary Farmers Market was a great place to check out and my kids had lots of free samples that they thoroughly enjoyed. Reminds them of Costco with the various food samplings. Samplings = buying = empty wallet when you walk out...haha. Prices are not cheap by any means but everything feels homemade and tastes organic and delicious. Don't get me wrong, not everything is organic but you can't find most of the food ideas anywhere else. Today we left with mini pies to last a year, Pepperoni sticks that make your mouth water, popcorn and chips for kid lunch snacks. They have a play area for little kids to run around and burn some energy, which is a great idea if you want to break up your shopping so the kids don't get too restless. Overall, we'll be back to try some new things. read more

Good place to grab lunch on a Friday ! They have Indian, Japanese, Vietnamese, and almost everything else under the sun. A small kids play area, and some arts and crafts. They can improve on the seating, as it's hard to find a place to eat. The weekends during lunch hour you'll be hard pressed to find a seat. Lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. To be honest, a lot of the fresh produce is the same stuff you can buy at a Safeway's or Sobey's. read more

I was at the Calgary Farmer's Market recently. I stopped to wash my hands in the washroom. I saw a staff of the Calgary Farmer's Market (wearing the red shirt with the logo) open the washroom trash and dig around. The staff member pulled out a plastic water bottle (the kind you recycle), fill it up from the tap and drink from it. I was really grossed out! ugh! It was almost as bad as the time we were at Happy Hills on Centre Street when an elderly patron threw up on the table. The staff cleaned it up with a cloth and bucket of water...and then cleaned the chairs...and went to clean the other tables with that same cloth and bucket of water... read more

I like that this market is available some days in the week not just on weekends. Great for a lunch on a Friday and The list of specialty item is very nice. I like supporting the little guys. But I do find most thing are overpriced at this market. I'm sure it's because they pay more for the rental space then other markets. read more

It was my first time in Canada and this was one of the first stops I made when I first landed in Calgary. It's a cute indoors farmer's market place that is great to try some of Canada's best offerings. We went to the charcuterie vendor and tried some sliced bison, and it really stood out as the meat-to-try at this place. I also tried some meat pie from the meat pie vendor and it was really awesome. I think by the time we got there they were just giving out free samples and gave some to my friend who felt obligated to buy one. But it was worth it. This was my favourite market to visit while on vacation in Calgary. So much so that we actually went twice! There were different vendors that sold a variety of things ranging from up cycled bags, to olive oil, to nut butters, plenty of hot prepared foods, and of course, plenty of fresh produce. Why I liked Calgary Farmers Market so much was that it's open, clean, and easy to navigate around. Plus it doesn't hurt to have a well known coffee shop, Analog Coffee, right by the door so I can grab a coffee and stroll around. We loved their coffee so much, the second time around, we bought some beans to bring back to Toronto! Back to the first visit, I ended up picking up lots of fresh tomatoes, basil, pasta, olive oil, and some pork chops to make dinner at the apartment that night. For dessert, we also grabbed a saskatoon berry pie from Simple Simons Pies. I'm still not sure what a saskatoon berry is supposed to taste like, but to me it tastes like a blueberry crossed with a currant. read more

#143 Yelp asks me every time I check in here, what keeps me coming back? As my friend Sascha F. said, it's not a true farmers market (or for me, at least the kind of farmers market I am used to like the ones in Austin or Dallas or southern California). It's more of a hybrid with some farmers who bring their foods to the market whom also have restaurants so you can try their food (Silver Sage Beef and Silver Sage Burgers comes to mind). Getting there: There is Calgary Transit but I forgot which bus it is but I think it's a 4xx series bus so that would mean not so frequent service. There is a huge parking lot though this market is almost always busy so good luck finding parking. And, here's why. Why I really go: You have the following (my current personal favourites in NO particular order some of which I have already reviewed (this list is subject to increase at any time without warning)): Jelly Modern Doughnuts (high quality ingredients and no filler preservatives and be sure to try the Baple Macon (darn it, Al C.)) Fratello Analog Cafe (part of the Analog Coffee and Corbeaux Bakehouse on 17th Ave SW with mostly organic selections and fair trade coffee). Has almost as much on its menu as the 17th Ave SW location with exceptional service, it's always busy. Los Chilitos (small front with better food than it's 17th Ave SW location) the previously mentioned Silver Sage brand (organic/free range beef and more for the non-vegan, non-vegetarian like myself) The Main Dish (say hello to Peggy from James when you visit this deli type counter with high quality items like potato salad and more) Saskatoon Farm at The Calgary Farmers Market (specializing in dishes such as Saskatoon Berry pie (hmmmmmmmmmm)) Simple Simon Pies (from the Crossroads Market as well) with some tasty, high quality pies (both dessert and shepherd's pie) Wayne's Bagels (also on MacLeod Trail) with various type of bagels (big enough to be a breakfast dish by itself). See my Yelp review on my first choice, the Tuna Melt Kin Sushi (a step below the Big Catch at the Market on MacLeod and this is not a knock on Kin Sushi as Big Catch has big shoes to fill) actually has some, as I like to call it, "non-white" or to be politically correct, "non-caucasian" people, spicy sushi (this means that is really spicy as opposed to bland spicy). Only in Calgary so far have I seen fresh sushi places at a farmers market (and I love it). Perk N'Beans is relatively new or I just finally made it to this shop (thanks to Peggy @ The Main Dish). It is a competitor to the previously mentioned Fratello Analog Cafe. However, this business has fewer selections for items to go with their delicious coffee (it's a small space) but often is less busy than Fratello Analog Cafe. The coffee is organic and the items are delicious. So, from my list, other than Silver Sage Beef (which also runs the Silver Sage Burgers), I spend most of my time eating at the shops instead of hitting up the farmers which I will eventually do (why can't any mall food court or airport food be this good?). This is why I keep coming back to the Calgary Farmers Market (http://www.calgaryfarmersmarket.ca/). Drawbacks: Only open Thursday to Sundays from 0900 to 1700 (9am to 5pm). I don't so much think of the Calgary Farmer's Market as a market as I do an Artisanal Mall. The produce section and usual farm items you'd expect to see at a Farmer's market are solid, but it's the produced goods that really set this farmers market apart. Well, produced goods and the food court. The food court is incredible, showcasing plenty of grab and go meals from great local businesses. The Calgary Farmers Market is the most mainstream of Calgary Markets. This makes for a consistent experience with consistent products, and a very cohesive feel to the overall building. While it makes for a good experience, it somehow seems to lose that authentic feel of the pop up markets. read more

Holy negativity, Batman! I am surprised by how many "dissapointed" reviews there are on here from patrons of the former Farmers Market. I really don't get the "mall" comparisons. From the first time I walked in, I only saw the new location as an improvement; a cleaner space with more lighting and an increased amount of interesting vendors. Granted, I miss the old location. I spent many, many, MANY Friday afternoons in that old spot, just having a late lunch, picking up some veggies or taking in a free bbq during stampede time. It is one of the first places I really felt "familiar" with when first arriving in Calgary, and over the years it offered a great deal of comfort (particularly when I was unemployed!), like meeting an old friend regularly for coffee. But we cannot simply hold on to "what was" forever. We have to accept and embrace "what is!" It still feels like the place I knew and loved so well, only with a new makeover and a few improvements! read more

I wished I could rate this market with five-stars because then it would mean that I could go here every weekend to get my grocery shopping done. But the reality is that I hardly ever go here and even if I do, I find myself walking out with a small bag of locally grown mini-carrots (that is, if I'm lucky as the situation gets worse during winter). What puzzles me the most every time I visit the market is, why is there so little produce from the local/Canadian vendors? Okay, I'll let the avocados and some of the tropical fruits off the hook but what about the rest? To make things worse, everything is over-priced here. Paying almost $5 for a small bag of carrots and $4.50 for a loaf of bread makes me wonder if it is really worth it. You can find plenty of organic products from your community organic stores and sometimes even the same fruits and veggies from the big name stores for cheaper... sigh read more

Checked out the new market last weekend, and it's pretty wonderful! Row after row of food vendor, both ready to serve and stuff to cook later. The biggest problem was deciding what to eat first! I did notice there seemed to be fewer non-food vendors than in the previous location, but I think the abundance of food makes up for that. It was pretty chaotic opening weekend, but they had parking attendants out and everything seemed under control - and I'm sure the chaos will die down after a couple weeks. The Market is a favourite of many when the weather's gorgeous, but I'd even recommend checking it out on a stormy day - it's all enclosed, and I bet you'd have to fight fewer crowds! read more

Between their move and my travel schedule I haven't been to the Farmer's Market for quite some time and this is my first trip to their new location. I'll admit that I had high expectations given all the hype and excitement their management attempted to create around the move and grand opening. Unfortunately those expectations were for the most part dashed. I've trying to be as objective as possible when making the comparison between old and new but I can only come up with one positive thought on their new digs. They're cleaner and (obviously) don't show the wear and tear from the old site. But thats where it ends for me. Many of my favorite vendors are no longer there (Sourdough Bakery and Hoven Farms to name two); the parking is abysmal. My impression is that its a newer, cleaner, slightly better organized version of the Blackfoot Market (which I find to be a rat trap) and is bordering on a flea vs. farmer's market with all the crafts and chotchkies. read more

We have made a habit of going to the Calgary Farmers Market and so far no regrets! Parking is never a problem to start, which having just moved here from Halifax, is a nice feature compared to back home! The market itself is a good set up inside. Never really feels that over crowded. There are some excellent vendors who we visit regularly. One selling fresh whole chicken and boneless skinless breasts. Their bacon was a bit of a let down though. Another is the beef farmer. NY Striploins are amazing! One of my favorites is the dry spices and herb vendor. It can seem a bit pricey, but the quality of the spices and sea salts are well worth it. Several good produce vendors even though not everything is "local" at all times. Due to seasonal crop times it is understandable. I would rather it be imported than not available at all. The food court is OK. We usually grab lunch there and have some hit and misses there. Recently a new sandwich shop opened up and hands down it is the best food we have tried there. The BBQ joint was a bit of a disappointment. Overall a good market. Not the very best I have been to, but not the worst by any means! And any time you can avoid the supermarkets, especially for meats, it's a good day! read more
