FTR? Don't mind if I do! Chongo's is an awesome-sauce fresh produce market in the Crossroads…read moreFarmers Market. There was all kinds of food and even a lady who could really get your juices flowing. For real! Over by the back counter, they sell freshly made carrot, beet and apple juice. If you want your own jug of just carrot juice because you don't see any in the fridge, no problemo! Just ask and it shall be yours. I wandered the aisles for awhile with my little roller plastic basket. They've got lots of 'em, you can use one too. I piled it up with purple potatoes (making a purple stew, whip-whip, whip-whip), roma tomatoes, shallots, avocado, mangoes, and cabbage. Not to worry, I didn't use that all in one dish, although random ingredients from the farmers market could make for a fun cooking experiment. In total, $27.32. A little shocked at the final tally, I must say. I thought it was going to be more! Except it wasn't. I'm now under the impression that produce from the farmers market is cheaper (and waaaaay more full of nutrients, although that's gotta be a given) than whatever stuff I buy at the grocery store. And the little lady at the other end who's lineup I went to in order to get all that yumminess weighed and pay for my food stuffs, lovely. April Underdog Challenge: 10/30

However, your less than fresh produce and your staff that drops my fruit from a foot above the counter on to my bag of tomatoes....well, I just can't do it anymore. I'm sorry that this is a Dear John letter but I have to find a new, less fruit abusive produce stand. It's not me, it's you, Merry

Apples, as you may have guessed, are her main business. I could go on about how the apples are organic and farm direct from the Okanogan, how the Ambrosia apples are delightfully crisp and refreshing with a pleasant amount of sweet... All of this is important to me, but at the end of the day, she really is the perfect lady to buy apples from. She's every bit as sweet as the apples she sells and she absolutely loves them. A quick chat with her and you'll remember how much you love apples to. I bet she makes the meanest apple pie you've ever seen. Along with the apples and apple relatives (she showed me some Quinces. It's a tasty smelling thing. Look it up.) She also carries a good amount of veggies at her Eau Claire market stand. She works with the veggie farmers at the Hilhurst/Sunnyside Farmers Market to sell a great mix of farm fresh veggies. I picked up some gorgeous bell peppers of all colours and sizes. Some nice jalapeños that she tells me are so spicy her hands still burn today from chopping a bunch of them up yesterday, red and yellow onions, mushrooms, cilantro, and some really great looking beets for $15. My shopping bag was really full. In many cases her prices beat what you'd get at a place like Safeway and her products kick the crap out anything you'll get at Safeway. It's worth it to wait until Tuesday at Eau Claire Market, or every first and third Wednesday of the month at the Hillhurst Sunnyside market (see here: http://www.yelp.ca/biz/hillhurst-sunnyside-farmers-market-calgary) to buy your produce, folks.

I love this place because I love fresh fruit and vegetables and this place always makes me feel so good and healthy. This is about the person who started the company: Sharla Dube started her produce business the year of 1995 in Canmore. Hauling two tables out to the farmers' market each weekend and filling them with fresh BC fruits direct from the growers was her respite from a hectic day job. Today, her fresh fruits and vegetables take up more than 2,400 square feet of space and a lot more than two tables. The Cherry Pit specializes in locally grown fruits and vegetables direct from the growers, but Sharla loves bringing in those hard-to-find items like fiddleheads, fresh figs and micro greens. As a mom she realizes the importance of healthy living. https://www.betterfresh.ca

Why wade through the crowded market when the Cherry Pit has everything I need? Also, they offer payment by debit - a definite perk, as many of the other businesses within the Farmer's Market are cash only. The Cherry Pit has a vast selection of fresh fruits and vegetables, and a modest selection of modest herbs available near the checkout. My lady can't get enough of their baby tomatoes and green beans because they're so much fresher than the stuff being peddled by the big supermarket chains. Fresher, and more expensive, but you get what you pay for at the Cherry Pit which is really all you can ask for from your produce provider.
