Came here on a Saturday night with my cousins and WOW! Drinks are phenomenal, every single cocktail I got was amazing. Bartenders are very fast and attentive as well. Docking down one star because when the host seated us, the server who had our section personally told us to get our drinks at the bar by ourselves in a rude tone. And he told his busser NOT to bus the table we were seated at (specifically not even wipe it down). On top of that he decided he would rather serve the table directly next to us.. to that specific server all I have to say is: 1. We're servers too buddy, so you missed out on a GREAT tip 2. Just don't be a dick! Fake it 'til you make it; I know how it's like to have stressful days at work. If you told us politely you were too busy for 3 people we would've understood. 3. This place has the best staff - friendly and attentive, but like others stated the food isn't something to rave about. I personally do love their sangria, they have the option of red and white, love the white sangria! I have had their fries and they're a little too crispy for my liking but they're okay. FYI - This review is on my Sunday brunch experience. I've been keen on trying District since it opened. The dinner menu looks appetizing, of course, but they had me with the all inclusive brunch buffet and bottomless mimosas. I treated my mom for brunch, which in turn she was my designated driver. I love how things work out that way. I really liked the rustic vibe at District. Antique incandescent light bulbs are so in right now. The center bar was huge and accessible on all sides. We were seated in an extended side room of the restaurant that reminded me of a library. I was pleasantly surprised by how good the food was overall. I kicked off brunch with a plate full of the hefty savories. The scrambled eggs, bacon, and sausage patty were basic and what I expected, which was a good thing actually. You just shouldn't mess these up. The cheddar grits were fine, but a bit too runny for my liking. This could very well be a preference thing, because I make cheesy grits at home on the thicker side. The highlights on this plate were the collard greens with ham, crispy chipotle potatoes, and biscuit with chunky gravy. District has an interesting take on ceviche. I didn't hate it nor did I love it, but it certainly was very different from ceviche I've had before. I think the sweet potatoes in the ceviche threw me off. Loved the chips, which you can tell were made fresh in-house. Lastly, the sweet brunch items were delicious! Nothing special about the mini pancakes themselves, but the maple syrups were great. You can definitely taste the different flavors albiet subtle. The bourbon bread pudding bites were my favorite and even better when I dipped them in the maple syrups. Service at District was excellent. We had a really kind and attentive waitress. I couldn't make up my mind on what type of mimosa I wanted next, so she created a flight of all 6 mimosas for me. The peach and cranberry mimosas were by far the best flavors. I could hardly taste the fruit in some of the other ones like the guava and pineapple. They tasted like straight up alcohol. But with that said, you know District doesn't skimp on the champagne! I succeeded on getting pretty f'd up and ruining my whole Sunday lol. read more

We had a great waitress, Madeline, she was so so sweet and it was her first night of working. She was very attentive and checked in on us the perfect amount as well as gave us her opinions when we asked questions and had the right amount of conversation with us. I give her 5 STARS! However... we ordered the friend chicken and the pork belly sliders, we were unimpressed with with both the pork belly, usually a meat VERY tender meat, it was NOT tender... it had the texture more like pulled pork BUT SO HARD to chew... the chicken on the other hand was not cooked through. My second time at District and the food was way better. The kitchen and service were both on point tonight. We spent the whole evening picking off the small share plates. I've never had the pleasure of going to District San Francisco so I have nothing to compare to this newly opened location. All I can tell from photos is that this restaurant/lounge is mostly the same as that one. We went on a weeknight and I found the experience to be just ok for it having been opened for just a week. District San Jose is located on North San Pedro Street in the heart of downtown San José. At first I thought it replaced The Old Spaghetti Factory, but who would replace that ancient mediocre Italian restaurant which seems like it has been there since the dawn of time? (I can't believe it's still surviving after all these years.) District sits between The Old Spaghetti Factory and Firehouse No.1 Gastropub. There's a large parking structure right across the street from the restaurant; flat fee is $5. They validate so just ask for the validation ticket before you leave the restaurant. The interior of the new space has a dim and cozy kind of ambiance with its red brick walls. There's a bar in the middle of the restaurant shaped like a horseshoe. There's plenty of tables spread all around the space. For the cold nights, there's a patio with a fire pit by the front entrance. Service was good. Our server came by our table several times that night. He was both friendly and helpful. From my first experience there that night, I would have to say that District is mainly good for their Happy Hour drinks and food. The food on their regular menu is just ok. This seems like a place people would go to hangout to drink and chat mostly; not really a place to sit down for seriously good cuisine. I would say it's kind of like the bar area inside San Pedro Square, but with a lot more seating. The noise level was average. I would expect it to be a lot louder on weekends what with all the happy drunk customers. Crispy Spiced Chicken Wings : This was ok. I wasn't too impressed, after all it's just chicken wings. 5 pieces with a mango, habanero, and tamarind sauce. Regular bar food but very average taste. Roasted Brussel Sprouts & Delicata Squash : This was the best dish out of everything which is weird because this is just considered a "side dish." But this veggie dish isn't the hardest to cook. I can cook this with my eyes closed. Margherita Pizza : The crust on the pizza wasn't to my liking. It was too chewy for some reason. I only ate one slice. This place is amazing. My wife brought me here for the brunch buffet today since she enjoyed her dinner the other night. The food was an incredible fusion of different American foods. From cheddar grits and biscuits and gravy to fried bananas and ceviche. Every option was incredible. We got the bottomless mimosas as well, which honestly, you don't need. We are drinkers and 2 mimosas had us on a great level for the morning. The staff was very kind and approachable. I wish I remembered our servers name. It was her first day and she killed it. Not only was our waitress very sweet and conversational, but another lady, who seemed like a manager came by for a friendly chat as well. Finally had the chance to dine at District San Jose the other night. District San Jose is a cocktail lounge that serves several small plate, tapas style entrees with a vast whiskey and wine selection. We came here for a late dinner and ordered several plates to share... 1) Margherita Pizza -Lots of mozzarella, tomatoes, and basil to top it off...generous portion too...each pizza comes with 6 slices. Dough and Crust was cooked well. 2) Avocado Tempura - Huge, thick slices of avocado with tempura batter. I'm glad they served this one warm...very tasty! 3) Beef Sliders - Two sliders...$13.50 for 2 is a rip-off though. See my picture...the pieces of lettuce was actually bigger! 4) Arancini - Lots of spinach and the highlight was the tomato sauce! Service was definitely average at best. Hostess was awkward and a bit adamant that we sit outside. Our server who took our order was great, however the other server delivering our food forgot utensils, plates, napkins, etc. She also took away our dishes (the avocado tempura and arancini) without asking...I was still dipping my food into the various sauces. Service didn't do anything to ruin the meal, but definitely didn't enhance my experience either... It also was odd that the items were delivered one at a time rather than all at once (since they are small plates). Whenever I have tapas style dishes, I like to have everything laid out so I can pick and choose. Also the portion sizes should be re-evaluated...as they are inconsistent...For example, the arancini only had 3 pieces (hard to split between 2 people) and the beef sliders only had 2 sandwiches (definitely cannot split between 3 people). Meanwhile, the pizza was definitely large enough for a meal on its own! Overall though, the food is great. Paid about $55 with tip for all the items ordered. I didn't drink this particular evening, but cocktails ranged from $11-$15 (which is right on par with many craft cocktails in DTSJ). Definitely worth trying out! Disappointed by the short rib pizza. Was a glob of oil and fatty meat. I had to drain all the oil and grease, but still couldn't finish more than a third of it. We decided to try this place for the first time last weekend. We made an early reservation, and were seated immediately when we arrived. We sat at a high top table, which is mostly what they have. They also have large TV's with sports playing. Our server was friendly and told us to use the QR codes on the table for the menu. We placed our happy hour drink order first. I had the old fashioned, which I believe they used Buffalo Trace. It was very good. I ordered the deviled eggs and the cauliflower (I don't eat meat) and my husband ordered the burger. The server warned me the eggs are spicy and they definitely had some heat to them, but they were good otherwise. The cauliflower dish had no flavor and the greens with it were extremely bitter. I couldn't eat it. I told the server, and she apologized offering to get me something else. I refused the substitution feeling like there was little else on the menu I could eat. My husband said his burger and fries were fine. When she brought us the bill, she charged us for the cauliflower! I couldn't believe it. By this time the restaurant was buzzing and very busy. We opted to tip less and make a note on the receipt instead of waiting to complain. I really wanted to like this place. I think it's really more of a bar than a restaurant. I was so excited to try district since I've heard how amazing the SF and Oakland locations were! They have happy hour everyday (except Sunday since they are closed). Came in on Saturday right when they opened at 5pm for their happy hour. They offer $6 appetizers and select beer/wine and well drinks. $1 dollar oysters also but did not get it this time around. We shared the fish and shrimp ceviche and prosciutto wrapped stuffed dates for happy hour. Both dishes were good, but extremely small in portion. But I guess that's what you get for these nicer new American restaurants. The stuffed dates were only 3 small pieces. I looked at other people's food and there were only 4 chicken wings for an order as well as 4 halves of deviled eggs. Not sure If the happy hour food is worth it , probably just the oysters. What really shined was we ordered the guanciale (pork cheek) and Calabrian Chili pizza! The crust of the pizza was so different, almost flaky and soft like a pastry! I would definitely recommend it! Anyways the bill for 2 happy hour appetizers, 3 happy hour drinks, and a pizza came down to about $51 without tip. So yes it is pricey, but I would come back for the oysters and try their regular good items again! read more

Out of all the brunch spots downtown, I messed up and suggested we pick this one. My girlfriend and I have had a decent experience here before, and since it's right outside our apartment, I thought it would be good for a quick brunch fix before running errands. Oops. I don't think I've ever felt that second class in a restaurant. We sat right in front of our blue-haired hostess/server, and after taking our order, we never heard from her again. She followed up with all of the tables around us, but somehow managed to forget we existed. If you're a dine-and-dasher, this is the place for you! For us to leave, I had to walk up to her and ask for our check. We tried waiting for ~20 minutes before walking over, trying to see if she'd ever initiate contact with us again, at least to close us out and get her tip. Here's what I think of the food we ordered: I forgot the name of the cocktail I ordered, but it was mezcal based and totally delicious. Oysters - $2.50 each, not bad. Lamb Meatballs - Lots of flavor on this one too, a bit salty for me. Beignets - Another table favorite, though we all agreed that these were not beignet-like at all. They were much more dense like a super moist donut hole...still good with the chocolate dipping sauce though. Margherita Pizza - We went through three other plates before we kept waiting for this one...when we realized it would be a while, we wanted to try to order more food during the wait but had trouble getting our servers' attention. When we were able to get a hold of our server, we wanted to asked about the status of our pizza order first. When we did, our server left before we could order more food....we were left waiting a while longer with no explanation until the pizza arrived, fresh from the oven. We were told that the dish would be removed from our bill, which we appreciated, we just wished we received proper updates in the meantime so we could be less hangry. We had our favorites but the overall food experience was ok. Service experience could have been better, but we were all glad that the pizza issue was addressed at the end, even if we had to wait for it. District is the cutest little wine bar ever. It's the wine bar you dream of at 3pm on a Friday. I came here with a girlfriend after taking the train from the city down to San Jose last week. The train station is a short walk away which was also amazing. They have a great happy hour menu that ends at 6pm on the weekdays and includes small bites and different wine/beer/cocktails. My wife and I visited the District restaurant a couple of times before the pandemic and now a couple of times during. It's a great restaurant! To accommodate the current pandemic rules, they expanded the outdoor seating. In addition to its original sidewalk seating, there's also seating now in the entire street in front of the restaurant now closed to traffic. Other restaurants have done the same and the entire block has a festive atmosphere. The food and service is exceptional. Our server, Kayla, attended us on our last two visits. She has an engaging personality, is very knowledgeable of the restaurant's offerings, and very attentive. She suggested we start with the ORGANIC GREENS avocado, shaved radish & cucumber, spiced sunflower seeds, and champagne-citrus vinaigrette. It's a really delicious salad, and the watermelon radish sliced very thinly is a wonderful addition. Her other suggestion was the fried chicken sliders with pickled Fresno chili cole slaw and spiced honey rémoulade. Fantastic!! There are two sliders (larger than the typical slider buns) with fat real chicken meat extra juicy on the inside and crispy coated outside tasting like real fried chicken. I think they're done sous vide but I didn't confirm it. The slaw, chili's, and rémoulade complement the chicken with just the right hint of spice from the chilis. Wow! On the first trip my wife and I each had a full order but we shared one order the second time as they are quite filling; although I would have eaten a second one if it was on my plate! I tried the oysters on the second visit ( since I'd get only one only one slider) which came with a mignonette sauce. Also delish. I washed it all down with a Turley Zinfandel. The sad part was that I actually liked this place. Had been there a few times during happy hour/dinner. Liked the food and the whiskey selection. Came by for brunch for a friends bday today. "Service" was extremely slow. Some of us ordered food well before others yet didn't receive our food until well after the couple late folks had already finished their meals. One item I ordered (shrimp & chorizo skillet) basically arrives like a quiche/frittata, which is definitely not what I was looking for. I gave that feedback not looking for a free meal or replacement (not my style) but just as feedback to the chef that they should probably change how it's presented on the menu. Another person in the party who had ordered the same, saw mine arrive and immediately asked if it was too late to change his order as he also felt it didn't match the description. Fortunately, he was able to have it changed. After our feedback on those 2 orders, service got even worse. They clearly were actively avoiding us despite me making clear I wasn't even looking for a replacement of my meal or refund. It was just feedback. As our waiter and waitress stopped coming by, we had to ask the buser for our check. After finally receiving the check for $110, I gave them my card. They came back with a receipt for $335 charged to my card. If the charge was 335 at the start, I would've split with the group. When confirming the charge was correct, they lied and said they'd removed my meal. It was still on the receipt. Oh and our party all agreed, worst Moscow mules of our life. This place is a classic example of a great idea with poor execution where it counts. This is long, but I can't be fair and explain properly otherwise. The space is impressive; open, spare, hip and attractive. They have a good happy hour menu and a well thought-out wine and whiskey menu. The food, all small plates meant for sharing, is creative, delicious and, generally, beautifully plated. If only they'd put some of that effort into the service. That was abysmal. What's the point of all the pretty trimmings if the main event is a bust? Three stars is actually generous, and only earns that third star for its potential. I was the first person seated in the entire place last night, right at 5, ahead of my party. A short while later I ordered two dishes; forty minutes later we had neither of them, while those same two dishes had rolled out by to other tables that had, obviously, ordered them after I had. While I was quite annoyed, and hungry, at thirty minutes I politely inquired about where our food was. Thirty minutes for deviled eggs and rice balls was unacceptable. The answer: the bussing staff was doing the delivery of food to tables and didn't always know in which order the dishes had been ordered. Really? If you can't manage to convey the order of delivery to staff, or they're not bright enough to remember that order, you're doing it wrong or can't hire decent staff. Yes, it has filled up in the restaurant in the FORTY MINUTES since I'd ordered, and our table was in the front of the restaurant, but that is not a reasonable excuse for not delivering ANY food in that time. We were told they'd run out of our dishes (what a surprise) and were making more right away. After forty minutes we finally received ONE dish, the French fries that had been ordered last. One cup of French fries for five hungry people. Yay. At that point we ordered everything else we wanted, hoping we might get it all before the place closed. There were apologies, some more apologies, and then food FINALLY started coming out. In all, we ordered a dozen different dishes plus two desserts. Without exception, everything was delicious and we ate every bit. The highlights, for me, were the warm burrata, the Moroccan lamb meatballs and the French fries. The only two dish that wasn't a good value were the aforementioned, long-awaited rice balls (arrancini). While they were quite tasty, two meager little rice balls is insufficient, even at happy hour pricing. I'd love to share pictures of the food, because most were gorgeous, but we were famished by the time it arrived and fell on it all without time for photos. After all this, the only amends for their complete initial screw-up was to comp the happy hour-priced deviled eggs. No mention was made of the equally late, and scrawny, arancini, and neither of the desserts was gratis, which is a typical "sorry" for ineptitude at a restaurant. Disappointing. In sum, go for the food, brace yourself for the service and enjoy this new, potentially great, spot in downtown San Jose. Food was great as always. Service was under par. Waiter was not in the mood and gave us attitude. Plus my hanger steak took about 50 minutes to come out. I appreciate that it was complimentary, but the least the waiter could do is check in sooner. Such a bummer as this was one of my favorite spots to eat. read more

I'm a huge fan! My wife and I attended the soft opening for District on Thursday and we were totally impressed. Nothing was "soft" about the opening as the food was spot on and the service was quick. We shared a ton of small plates with friends including prosciutto wrapped figs, Chef's choice charcuterie board, wings, and a delicious pizza. We are so glad District has opened in the South Bay. We were huge fans of the San Francisco location when we lived in the city. This place is like the SF local but way bigger with an even better communal layout. So, in summary this is going to be my regular neighborhood spot. They have a huge selection of whiskey and wine and it's a great location to catch up with friends or watch the game on one of there two large projection screens. I can't wait to go back and try the beef tartar (which looked amazing). Just go check it out already, you won't be disappointed. read more
