They are the sort of spots one would find exciting in 2010 NYC, or perhaps 2025 Asheville. There's certainly a scene, but the green neon sign that reads "We Be the Infamous," and their commitment to their speakeasy hidden behind another business bit makes me immediately want to run the other way. But I ordered a couple of drinks for the full experience. I got a cocktail with mezcal and pineapple syrup and an espresso martini because no other drinks really called to me. One great thing about Queens bars is that places are still inexpensive, so I'm not mad at only spending $17 on these drinks, but the creativity isn't matching the likes of Dutch Kills or 56709 up the avenue. It's totally serviceable and it seems others have a great time here, but I found the experience wholly forgettable.

I reserved a spot at the bar and arrived early. The decor and ambiance won me over as soon as I walked in: musically centric and culturally important, with a real sense of place. The DJ spun vinyl from the 70s through the early 2000s, with artists like Anita Baker, Maxwell, Nas, and The Mary Jane Girls, and that was just a taste. The staff were no-nonsense but friendly, which is exactly the balance a nightlife spot needs. I felt safe and welcome the entire time. I'm an introvert, so my plan was one drink, a few songs, and out before the crowd arrived. Instead, I stayed well after it filled up. People from all walks of life packed the room, and I knew I was among my people when Tina Turner came on and everyone belted out "What's Love Got To Do With It." At one point the manager or owner (I wasn't sure which) came out to check on staff and greet guests. He was approachable and looked genuinely happy to be there, which says a lot about the energy of the place. This was the highlight of my trip, and Record Room will be in my regular rotation whenever I'm in NYC. I hope it enjoys protection and longevity in the neighborhood. One small note: the bar stools are rickety and unstable. They're due for a replacement.

The biggest question then became, where to go? We needed a place that was relatively easy to get to that would hold close to 100 people. Jungly was a contender for several reasons - it's location, size, vibe, and menu all seemed to check off. It also helped that I had done business with the owner previously at one of his other spots. It seemed like the natural choice, so I went ahead with the booking. Jungly is located in LIC - it's a pretty convenient spot as its close to the LIRR and the subway. Parking can be a challenge, but luckily I found a spot only a block away. The space itself is nicely set up - walking in you're immediately greeted by the bar area with dining areas both to the left and the right. Due to our size, they closed the place to the public and we were able to freely roam the bar area and one of the dining rooms. In addition to standard tables, they have some lounge space and high tops by the bar. The vibe is somewhat modern - a black/grey color scheme paired with neon and golds. It looks like the space could easily be converted to a club-like atmosphere. Since we were here for a private event, the food was set up buffet style - we chose three apps, four mains, and two sides. Ultimately, for apps we chose pita bread with dips, steak tacos, and shrimp tacos. For mains we chose fried chicken sliders, smashed beef sliders, cacio e pepe, and roasted chicken. For sides, we got fries and Brussels sprouts. In general, all of the food was tasty; the strongest dishes were the tacos, fries, and the chicken tacos. The tacos were generously filled, the fries were the crispy skin style, and the chicken sliders were nice and crispy. The weakest for me was the cacio e pepe - not much flavor and just not really a standout IMO. My communication with management to set up the event were a little staccato, though in the end everything worked out. For the most part, my communication with them was consistent in the days leading up to the event. Service the night of the event was overall good - they were very accessible but I found that they could have replenished the food a little faster in response to the rate it was being taken from the buffet. The bar, on the other hand, was great - both in service and variety of liquor available. Overall, we had a great event at Jungly. They were professional, fair, and delivered on the goods. I would definitely consider hosting another event there, or dine here on my own.

Between our rounds of cocktails, we also ordered some spicy popcorn shrimp (not pictured) that came fast and hot. it was fresh and they provided us chopsticks which was interesting. The waiters were quite attentive and they were checking in on us quite constantly but not too much that it felt like they were asking us to leave. The second round of drinks was also captivating to the eye. My second cocktail was called lavender mist that was in a tall narrow glass that had foam on top with a bird couple design that I thought was adorable. It was fun to drink the foam around it and it had bits of fruit in it as well. It was much fruitier than the first drink but I wasn't mad about it. I wanted to note that the drinks menu were divided by "types" such as "medium flavor, light flavor, etc so that you know exactly what you're ordering with the ingredients clearly listed along with the designs of what the drinks are going to look like. The atmosphere was lively with a mix of classy. I would come back again to try the sushi rolls! I didn't get a chance.
