I've passed this restaurant while downtown and decided to visit and it was well worth it. Great ambiance, cocktails, and staff. My waitress was attentive and friendly. I sat upstairs as there is only a bar downstairs and it was full. It was a Thursday so they had $.50 wings. They offer various flavors and order sizes for the wings so I went with the 8 piece lemon pepper buffalo. I also had the Henny Island cocktail and mac n cheese and fried okra for sides. It was our first time at District 924, and we were truly impressed from the moment we walked in. We were greeted at the door and seated upstairs, where the space was simply decorated, and beautifully lit--perfect ambiance for a relaxing brunch. The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming, taking the time to offer recommendations and make sure we had everything we needed. We started with the salmon bites, which were fresh, well-seasoned, and paired with a unique, flavorful sauce that really set the tone for the meal. The mimosas were as cute as they were delicious--we couldn't resist ordering a second round! For my main dish, I went with the shrimp and grits, and I can confidently say they were the best I've ever had. I was visiting Winston-Salem for the 1st time and attending/performing at the Theatre Festival. The three of us wanted to go to a local soul restaurant and decided on this one based on reviews though it was "away" from the main festival. When we arrived we went to go through the gate and was met with an older man that promptly held his hand up sand said, "You have to wait." Then pointed to his shirt with the restaurant logo and said "I work here, you have to wait until I seat you" Okay no problem, we didn't realize the "host" area was outside the gate so we took a seat on a bench. He was speaking with another couple and We asked "Excuse me but how long is the wait?" not realizing he was in a conversation with the couple who then looked at us and stated" This is OUR conversation" and then the gentleman grinned and said "Exactly". Wait, what did we just walk into? Umm sorry we didn't know you were in deep conversation. This is our 1st time here, just asking a question. We then asked for a menu while we wait and he begrudgingly went to get one. I literally had the feeling that I was interrupting his day and conversation. When we asked if this was the whole menu "He said that's our Saturday menu. WE have a different menu every day. It SAYS Saturday on the top but you can go online if you want to see more" Dude was just unpleasant and rude. I am not sure what the person in our party asked but he replied to her in a nasty tone "well lady you have to get with the times and figure it out" We all looked up aghast because do you even realize who you're speaking with? (We weren't going to name drop but dang courtesy should be extended to EVERYONE) As we were telling him that we had two additional members of our party (They were turning into the parking lot at that moment) he rolled his eyes and before we could finish, He barked "Everyone has to be here" okay we realize that. In fact, that is the policy for a most restaurants but why do you have to say it with such an attitude? We sat for maybe 7 minutes before we decided to go somewhere else. If the person who is the "greeter/Host" has this nasty of an attitude, then I can't imagine what is happening on the inside. So instead of an awesome soul food meal & cocktails we were we ended up across town at the Mayflower? Not the ambiance we were looking for and not black-owned but ironically they were nice from the moment we opened the door till the moment we left. I'm not from Winston Salem but out of all the restaurants and cafes we tried that week, this was by far the worst experience. I don't know if the food was awesome or not because we never got passed the attitude at the gate. Our first time at District 924 Soulfood and Cocktails. It was wonderful food and fantastic service by Sydney. Both meals had the creamiest grits, with a roasted garlic sauce, little pieces of chicken sausage and I had mine with fried flounder and my friend had shrimp. They have a great patio with sun and shade and a side street parking lot. They had drink specials on the chalkboard for $8. We both ordered the margarita. Sydney confirmed we wanted "lime margaritas". Yes. Apparently that translated to "top shelf" because we were charged $20 each. It was good but no kick. After the fact and reading other reviews, I realized they have a published dress code on their website, which I included as a picture. We only saw the patio and it was nice but not "fancy". I was in shorts, tee shirt and sandals with straps, so I was fine but you will want to read the code. read more

First time here. We will be back next time in this area. The cocktail Raspberry Patron splash was refreshing. I finally made it to District 924 for Soul Food Sunday and it was just what I needed. I don't cook much fried food anymore but I was craving a good ole school Sunday dinner plate and tried them out. I wanted the deviled eggs for an appetizer but they were out for the day so the waitress recommended kaboom shrimp and they did not disappoint. They were cooked and sauced to perfection! For my entree I ordered the fried chicken(white) with yams, collard greens, mac n cheese, roll, and a side of pork chop(don't judge me ). I topped it off with the perfect Arnold Palmer and I danced and ate until my heart was content. Was excited to try based on menu and mostly excellent reviews. Came for lunch, and decided to try the fish sandwich (had high hopes for the soul food preparation). After the first bite I was turned off, but tried another thinking I just hit the tail spot and the rest would be ok. It was not.... It was mostly skin and batter, and I ate no more. The fries would cold/mediocre at best. Was sick the remainder of the day. So disappointed. Also, is you're older and have need for at least a semi-comfortable chair with back support, you won't be able to sit in the outdoor area. The chairs are horrible. My family and I stopped at this restaurant randomly for Sunday dinner. As I approached the restaurant a host met me at the door before I could enter the restaurant. This was the first thing I found odd. He asked if I needed help. I then asked if there was a wait. He replied how many are in your party. I said 5, he said all 5 must be here to be seated. I said ok and that my husband was parking the car. He said ok you can wait for your family. I preceded to sit in the outside area before he stopped me and asked that I wait outside the gate which I found to be very off putting. He didn't provide an explanation just walked me outside the gate. I'll admit that I did not look at the dress code prior, however; I was dressed modestly in jeans, a plain but appropriate shirt and casual sneakers; none of which is prohibited per the online dress code. Not my typical dinner attire but we had just left our 10 year old's scrimmage. His passive aggressive demeanor really didn't sit well with me so we left. This was extremely disappointing. If the concern was my attire I would have appreciated him saying due to our dress code we cannot seat you at this time but would be happy to service you at later date. Overall, our visit was fine. Theres plenty of space in the adjoining parking lot. The front patio looks great with plenty of tables to enjoy outdoor dining. The entrance is a little confusing. We walked in right in front of the stairs. No one greeted us so we weren't sure where to go. A guy finally came over to tell us it would be a short wait but then the actual hostess gave us the option to sit at the bar. The decor in the restaurant is really nice and elegant. The bar stools were comfortable and there was plenty of space. The service wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. The bartender was pretty busy so she wasn't able to check on us much, but it was clear she was trying. I wasn't a huge fan of all the conversations between the staff members. It was obvious they were having issues and weren't in the same page. The food was really good. I really enjoyed the red velvet waffles and the chicken was cooked perfectly. The collard greens were great and had a little kick. I would recommend a private party room. There was a very loud group downstairs. I know they were just having a good time, but it was almost impossible to talk. I'll probably give it another try, but it may be a take out order. read more

Nice southern flavor. The food was good; nice southern style and flavor. The macaroni and cheese wasn't the thick southern flavor I'm used to but it wasn't bad. The yams and greens were good. I have to say, the location was pretty good. You have plenty of parking and there is outdoor seating. The inside is pretty tight on the first floor. I was unable to see the second floor. The food was really good. I got the salmon and grits which came with collard greens. You can see from the picture that it was a descent size portion. Plus, the garlic bewad was a great addition. I didnt get any drinks. Yet, the drink menu had a nice selection. The drink must have been good because we constantly saw more and more drinks leave the bar. Speaking of the bar, and general staff, they could be a little more organized. While I didnt experience any issues, I heard very clearly from the bartender to the bouncer a power struggle for power. While there was a hostess, the bouncer initially tried to seat us. But then, the hostess after consulting the bartender sat us somewhere different. And the power struggle continued throughout the lunch. I would order the food here; yet I probably would not dine-in again. read more

Food was GREAT! Although I couldn't wear my crocs I respect the dress code! The ambiance was amazing as well, loved the music taste.

My family and I decided to dine at this establishment for a late lunch/early dinner. We were greeted outside of the restaurant and was told that my daughter's footwear did not meet the dress code. She had on slides, and it was deemed appropriate for her to change into sneakers. Despite that, the rest of our experience was pleasant. We were taking to one side of the restaurant and was immediately waited on by a staff member. The selections on the menu were appropriate and had lots of choices. The establishment was clean and had a nice atmosphere. The food was absolutely delicious and reasonably priced. However, I think that the meals containing fries should have had more. We will definitely be returning again and will check the website before we come to confirm the dress code. read more

I had my first trip to this restaurant which is insane because it's so close to my house. The bartender was super friendly and greeted me as I sat at the bar and decided what to eat. I chose the fried chicken sandwich and she explained that their luxe sauce was a hot sauce that was sweet. The sandwich was a chicken thigh and it was really big and really perfectly cooked and seasoned. I was shocked that I got the sandwich fries and a lemonade for $10. I love the decor in this place and it just seems like a really nice place to eat. I will definitely be back soon. read more

My daughter drove all the way from her SC university in her basketball uniform, just to meet me to eat here AND celebrate my birthday! She was denied entry bc of her shoes (Yeezy in the pic)! I even tried to reason with the tall black male- who stopped us from being seated by the hostess who was wearing crocs!! I questioned what was the difference and was told it was their rule against slides! Ummm Crocs are slides and my daughter had on the full coverage Yeezy shoes. I was wearing work out clothes and Tory flip flops...I was good but these Yeezy slides are not allowed??? We gotta do better for each other! I'm always trying to support black owned businesses, especially with this projected recession coming. The ambience is modern and vibrant. However, the customer service is not acceptable. I did not enjoy my pork chop, Mac-n-cheese, and yams. The pork chop smelt burnt, and it tasted like it had been cooked in old grease. The peach cobbler dessert was also bland. I will not return to dine here. I have no recommendations. read more

First time visiting District 924 and had a great experience. Our waitress was very attentive and quick. She was the only waitress and had a lot of tables and doesn't seem like anyone lacked at their tables. We started out with cocktails which it's a Saturday so bring on the mimosas. They have a wide variety. My partner got the strawberry (I think it was strawberry lol) and mine was a traditional with orange juice. After about a round of those we moved on to appetizers. We started with the Catfish bites which were cooked well but could have been more seasoned. My partner mentioned they must have been fried while the catfish was wet because of the texture of the batter on them. The catfish that was part of the entree was fried much better and didn't have the same issue. I ordered the grits and shrimp which was very good. I personally think ALL restaurants should remove the tails from their shrimp, I don't think inedible things should be on plates. The grits were very creamy & delicious. read more

At first glance, the place seems to have a modest dining area (8-10 tables) plus an outdoor eating area of maybe 4 or 6 tables. But there's also a separate bar room, and I was told later that there is more dining and another bar upstairs. We were a party of 8 with a reservation. We were greeted at the door. There was a staff of servers and cooks, but apparently only one waitress on duty. Her name was Mya, and we all agreed afterwards that she did an amazing job attending to our group plus six other tables. I selected the special for the day, lamb chops, with sides of collard greens seasoned with smoked turkey, and yams. The sides were simply delicious. As for the lamb, when I ordered it, I did not say how done I wanted it, and the waitress didn't ask. I got three well-done grilled chops, which looked fine, but I like my lamb medium or medium-well done. It tasted ok, but was dry. As expensive as lamb chops can be (in this case, $36), I wasn't expecting a refund or a redo, but they did take 10% off. The others in my group had grilled salmon, or fried flounder, or shrimp. They all enjoyed their meal. I'd go back again if I'm having dinner in Winston-Salem. read more

New soul food spot that opened on Father's Day here in Winston. From what they posted on Facebook the owner teamed up with the owner of Luxe in Greensboro so their menu is exactly the same. It's not a bad thing, but I'm hoping in the future District will come up with their own signature dish(es) . A friend and I checked it out on a Friday they have a nice outdoor patio in the front of the building a nice bar & seating upstairs. We sat up stairs and the decor inside is really nice. Beautiful hardwood floors & nice chandeliers. We ordered our drinks. I ordered water & a glass of Cabernet. My friend ordered sweet tea. I'm not sure why the drinks come in a styrofoam cup when we're dining in, but since they just opened maybe they're getting more silverware & glassware in. We ordered the catfish nuggets & the kaboom shrimp (fried) for our appetizer. Our waitress Rin suggested that, food choice! Our main dishes were the shrimp & grits & the luxe wings with collards & Mac n cheese. The food was good, the price on the shrimp & grits was a little steep for what you get, $18. Which I knew ahead of time because I looked at the luxe page. But for some people who don't know , I wanted them to at least get an idea of what they will get before they ordered. My favorite was the catfish. I'm only giving 3 stars because the restaurant is basically Luxe but a different name. I think once they get more staff & hopefully add their own signature dishes, it'll be a hit! read more

I attended a going away lunch for a friend. They seated us outside on the very nice patio area. I was greeted by a nice gentleman who appeared to be excited to see me. It was almost like he knew me but he didn't, he was just being courteous and polite. I noticed he greeted everyone like this as I could see him the entire time I was there. Our waitress was very attentive and was extremely polite. She knew the menu and made recommendations that were "spot on". I ordered the catfish nuggets as an appetizer and the shrimp and grits as my main meal. EVERYTHING had flavor and was delicious!! The only negative thing I have to say is that we did have some flowers from the trees falling on our food and in our hair. But honestly, the way it fell, it looked like a garnish and that's beyond their control if the wind was blowing that day. Haha. So I didn't hold that agains them. This was the worst experience I have ever had in a restaurant. We brought my mother out to District 924 with her 3 adult daughters, three adult grandchildren, three grandchildren under six, and two great grands under two. We respected the policy that they could not seat but eight at a table. They included infants in their count at the table . When they seated us, they separated, one party inside and the other party outside, even though they were empty tables inside near us. The host intentionally split us up with glee. The host was nasty, rude, just overall unacceptable. I canceled my food order because I cannot give people money who are disrespectful to my mother. Furthermore, the restaurant was out of sprite, an appetizer of deviled eggs, and several entrées,. The experience left me feeling very angry and disappointed. read more

EDIT: Met a friend for brunch today who wanted to try District 924. I had not been since my original review over a year ago. Today I had a very pleasant experience and felt obligated to update my original review. We received our orders fast and accurately. Our waiter was pleasant and greeted us with a smile. I have never had a bad meal from this place tbh. Food is ALWAYS good not a lot of soul food options in the area for brunch so I am glad we have this District 924 (gas is wayyy too expensive for me to go to Luxe in Greensboro and Luxe usually has a long wait time). Was able to catch up with a long lost friend over soul food in a pleasant environment. Not sure what happened in the last year or so but I recommend this place and would recommend going again if your initial experience was not the best. FYI: they do have a dress code. It is pretty lax. The main thing is that no slides are allowed. Passion mimosa was also good ORIGINAL: I have had both good and bad experiences here. My ToGo orders during lunch time have been good but actual trips to the restaurant have not been the best. On my most recent visit one Friday during lunch time to dine-in, our Dr. Pepper tasted like Diet Pepsi (ended up getting water. Waitress later reported issues with carbonation for drinks). My friend ordered a chicken philly and was served a steak philly. When the waitress brought the plates to the table, my friend specifically asked if it was chicken and the waitress lied and said yes. I tasted it to confirm that it was indeed steak which my friend does not eat. Five mins later waitress returns to inform that she was given the wrong plate and that she would return with my friends correct order. As a health care professional, I cannot help but think of people with anaphylaxis to certain foods potentially receiving an item that they are allergic to without the waiter double checking when a patron expresses concerns when food is delivered to the table. The very last straw this day was that the ToGo box had a dead bug in it. I was excited to get this place in town which is why I have now been 4 times before writing this review but I will just stick with Luxe in Greensboro for my soul food fix. One positive from this day was that my soul food wrap was delicious. read more
