Loved our stay at the Discovery Inn. Super-helpful staff provided helpful restaurant advice that was tailored to our special dietary needs. Room was clean and comfortable, grounds looked inviting though we did not have much chance to spend time exploring. And we got a hand-made Happy Anniversary greeting with extra chocolates in our room when we arrived. A very nice, personalized touch! Sorry to have to leave. read more

We stayed at Discovery Inn only one night on our travels thru WA peninsula and Canada. Discovery Inn was a welcome respite as the trip nears end. Discovery Inn is small and intimate space with an unexpectedly large gardens. DI is close to Friday Harbor without being near the people and the noise and a great starting point for touring the island. The room was nicely appointed and was clean and well presented. The staff were efficient and friendly. A great spot all around...!! read more

Had to write a review to let people know what an awesome place the discovery inn is. It was our first time visiting the island and our Ferry was running nearly 2 hours late, so we were exhausted. Matt from Discovery called us to make sure we were doing ok and when we arrived he was the most genuine, helpful, nicest front office host ever. He had so much info about the island, where to go, what to do, eat etc. The rooms were neat and tidy and a great size. Beautiful gardens and my son and aunt loved the hot tub. Very close to the main street (we had our car, but is totally walkable). Would highly recommended. read more

Such a darling little convenient hotel with cute rooms, lots of very hot water and EXCELLENT, helpful service. When we checked in at night got helpful suggestions for dinner and breakfast, and again when we checked out, received help with ferry schedules from River at the front desk. Second time in Friday Harbor. First time staying at Discovery Inn. Incredible value, the property is maintained at a very high level. Only 3/4 of a mile from the downtown/marina area, wife and I walked to and from. Seems like there was a fairly recent remodel bc everything felt brand new and clean. I'll be frank and say I picked this place because it was the cheapest I could find for staying over a week on the island. However, with all the rooms being recently remodeled, it is a great place to stay if you don't mind walking into town every day. (On their site they suggest taking a ferry from the wharf; do it! And preferably schedule your cab beforehand.) The staff is extremely friendly: they led us to the best tasting salsa on the island, and let us use a printer when I found out I needed to print a confirmation. They were always there for suggestions and even shipped an item to me that I left in the room. They also even have a cleaning sheet you fill out if you don't want them touching or changing certain things. It was very welcoming and accommodating. The rooms themselves are actually pretty spacious, and ours had a little table next to the bed. The room also had a microwave and mini fridge which was important to our stay. Since we bought a ton of groceries while we were there, it was nice not to eat on the floor or bed. Speaking of bed, it was very, very comfortable, and I never had an issue falling or staying asleep. They don't have air conditioning, but they did hook a large fan up to place in the window. I was there during mid July and had no problems with this set up. Just make sure to turn it on before you leave for the day. The bathroom is also super nice! But it's definitely contained. We used the bar area outside of the bathroom door to lay out most of our bathroom extras like lotion. One thing to plan ahead on is they don't have DVD players with the TV. I would have brought my computer hook up cables if I realized that. It's a good thing they have wifi because my friend and I ended up watching Netflix every night. P.S. I didn't think the hot tub would be that important, but after 4 hours of kayaking, you'll be thankful it's there too. Overall, I would highly recommend this place. read more

I rarely write a review, but this place deserves a 5 star review... located about a mile from the harbor, so an easy and safe walk or ride a bike into town. Actually we rode the entire island on bikes and the location was perfect...the hotel sits on beautiful landscaping with picnic area and is small and quaint. Has a great hot tub that we used at the end of the day...rooms were good sized and had all the necessary amenities fresh towels and linens, but the best part was the staff...Matt and River were exceptional almost like having a concierge service. Super happy, friendly, and down right helpful humans...our last day we met Mark and he was equally outstanding.... We both grew up In Las Vegas and are accustom to excellent customer service in the hotel industry, which is hard to find in many cities, so to have a staff that treats customers like family really made this property stand out...excellent job! read more

My girlfriend and I spent our anniversary here February 1st and it was a completely amazing experience. Tim at the front desk was such a great guy and pointed out some amazing restaurants for us. The room we were in was on the 3rd floor and was just fantastic. The room came complete with a super comfortable queen size bed and some great pillows, a TV, great bathroom with a wonderful shower as well. The place was very charming and located a perfect distance from town as to be secluded enough for a getaway but close enough for convenience. We both agreed that we wlll be back often not only to the San Juans, but also to Discovery Inn!! read more

The rooms were okay. The walls were paper thin. I could hear everything going on next door. I knew exactly what they were doing there, bathroom, tv, walking. Luckily it was the other half of my family. The television was an older model with a snowy picture and the picture was purple on one half and green on the other. read more

The beds here are harder than the floor, but the floor isn't nice enough to sleep on. Its so far from town that your across from some dog care place, so it can be loud at times. Nothing near here, bring your own ice and any food or drinks that you want/need. Every place you want to go to needs to be driven, not within walking distance to anywhere. Oh, yeah except the local library. Did not feel safe here, a little fan, no screens on the windows anyone could come in the room at night if you needed to leave the window open for some fresh air as you need it in this place. read more

The thing about the Discovery Inn is that you have to consider where you are. In Friday Harbor, food and lodging are expensive ... and I mean out of proportion to prices in "America." We did research and settled here because we wanted something decent and a reasonable value. First, the staff is unfailingly cheerful and helpful. This is the greatest asset. The rooms are better than Motel 6 caliber, but like other reviewers we heard a lot of sounds from neighboring rooms. Speaking of sounds, in warm weather with the window open you will hear traffic as this is on the route out of Friday Harbor. If you're upstairs on the side that faces the library, you'll also hear an air handler or similar machinery on its roof. We had a problem with erratic hot water, which the desk clerk admitted had been reported "three or four times this summer." They compensated us for that inconvenience. The location is a bit far to walk to the downtown area. The parking lot is barely large enough and some of the other guests parked in a way that reduced even that space. So don't stay out late! I was informed by the staff that some rooms will be remodeled this winter, so a higher rating may be earned in the future. read more

an old-school renovated motel that hugs the corner of a relatively "busy" country biway on the outskirts of friday harbor (about a ten minute walk from the waterfront), the discovery inn has an outdoor hot tub and plenty of room on the lawns for lounging and reading. given the limitations of the motel's 1950s architecture, the rooms themselves are nicely made-over with tastefully restrained details. the bathrooms are completely new, by the way, and our room, #23 on the second floor, was well-maintained and clean. part of the appeal of staying here is fueled by an awareness of american road-culture, and this is a classic roadhouse-style motel. little details such as the old-fashioned plastic, diamond-shaped motel key fobs (or key tags) are powerfully nostalgic reminders of an era long passed. i suggested that the inn offer copies of their keys fobs for sale, as souvenirs, and maybe one day they will. a real strength of the motel is the owners and staff. i believe it was kim whom i met as she worked the front desk while we were there. as we assembled a last-minute itinerary for our final day on the island, she was genuinely helpful in connecting us with other vendors, and she knew many of the same people that we knew (such as the folks at san juan outfitters). additionally, one of our friends planned to travel to victoria in british columbia and asked her about ferry schedules - which she provided while she also pulled out a map and made several personalized notes, describing which venues were worth investigating, drawing in details of hidden alleys and lesser known coffee shops. she then gave that to our friend. i really appreciate that kind of generosity. one day, she should compile a small handbook of her favorite places to share with guests. excellent information. i'd most certainly come back to visit. read more

The Inn keepers are very nice. The beds are uncomfortable and the rooms a bit musty. Walls are very thin we could hear the snoring from the neighboring room and walking upstairs. They need to upgrade their towels as they are only big enough for a 5 year old. read more

Such a great spot to stay at in Friday Harbor! We decided to take a mid-week trip to Friday Harbor for a little R&R. I used Yelp to find some places with good reviews and from there I checked out prices and availability. Based on reviews and their reasonable pricing I chose Discovery Inn and couldn't be happier that I did. I received a reminder e-mail a few days before our reservation and in that it said their front office closes at 8pm and to call if your check-in will be later. Since we both worked till 5pm in Seattle that day and would be coming over on a later ferry I called to find out that they'll gave someone working the front till 10pm... great, that should work based on the ferry we're taking. The ferry was running a little late and we were just getting ready to disembark around 9:30-9:45pm when I got a call from their front desk. Super friendly and asked if we made the ferry and if they would need to do anything to help. I explained that we were just about to pull off the ferry and depending on how far away it was we'd be there shortly. We found Discovery Inn a few minutes later, parked and got checked in... the woman at the front desk was super helpful and said if we needed ideas on things to do or places to eat to come back and ask her or the woman working the desk during the day and they'd be happy to help. Our room was clean and nicer than I expected. There's no DVD player but the TV does have a decent selection of channels. The WIFI was a little spotty but typically worked well enough for me to blast out some work e-mails or make my plays in Words With Friends. The grounds were well kept and they did a wonderful job of tidying up our room in the mornings. The weather was a bit on the lame side so I never went down to the pool but everything else was great here. On our last day on the island we talked with the woman at the front desk about things to do that and day and she gave us really good advice and didn't just promote things on the island that weren't worth the time. I'm glad I chose Discovery Inn for our stay and will stay here again on my next trip here. I'm a huge fan! read more

Great value and quiet atmosphere.

This was a great place to stay! It's very close to town, especially with a bike. The rates are also quite low compared to other hotels. The room was clean, updated, and comfortable. You can tell the owners and managers really care for the property. We also very much appreciated the air conditioning on this very hot weekend. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. They even called right away when they found an item in our room I left behind after checkout. We would definitely stay here again, and would recommend to anybody looking for a comfortable and reasonably priced hotel. read more

What a great inn! First off...I would give the cleanliness a FIVE STAR rating! I'm pretty picky when it comes to 'all the little things' being clean....and our room was spotless! I don't really count the carpet...cause there's only so much you can do to keep that spotless. The new mattress was comfy....and the new bed covers are very nice. There are some older pieces of furniture...but, again...everything was solid and clean! The grounds around the inn are meticulously kept, and are very inviting. The staff is extremely kind and accommodating. I truly appreciate the extra mile they went to make sure we felt welcome, and well taken care of! The price is right for what you get here...it's not super fancy...there's no great view....etc...but, if you're looking for a place to rest your head at the end of a busy day on the island...this is the spot =) read more

Like other reviewers, I have appreciated Discovery Inn (have stayed there in the past and recommended it to others) for charming grounds, comfortable, clean rooms, and relative affordability in Friday Harbor, and I just stayed there again after a 2-day chartered cruise. However, this time there was a sour note: The man at the front desk who checked us in was rude and sarcastic. I was shocked, have never been spoken to that way in any business. Just an example: When I asked for a certain type of room, he said something like, the rooms we have are the rooms you get, and you booked a room on the third floor. I said, "Oh, I don't remember asking for a room on the third floor." He said in a sarcastic tone, "All the standard queen rooms are on the third floor, too bad you didn't read the booking listing." And, by the way, there is no elevator at Discover Inn, so you will be schlepping all your luggage up three flights. read more

I might be scoring a little harsh on this with only 4 stars as I can't think of anything they could do different other than have the heat on in the room before we arrived. It took a bit of time for the heater to warm the place up, but we went out to dinner and it was fine when we returned. Wonderful lady at the reception (I think owner) and very clean nice rooms. Very nice place. Soft comfy bed. Nice facility and showers were nice and hot too. No continental breakfast but they do have a coffee maker with real cream. TV has decent stations. Good wifi that is free. Its in a nice location not too far from the ferry. If you miss your ferry and get stuck, this is a good choice! It was so calm I don't wanna go, lol. read more

This place is a little bit of paradise, very nice clean rooms. They have A/C, a hot tub and plenty of room for the kids to play. Volleyball / badminton court, a BBQ, seats in the sun and a few picnic tables. All this on a property that is large enough for everyone to lounge on the lawn. Missy & Dan will take great care of you and will lead you anywhere you need to go on the island, wonderful people here. read more

This was a perfect spot to explore Friday Harbor and San Juan. Our hosts were super friendly and told us where to eat (Haley's and Rocky Bay) and all the spots to hit around the island. Our accommodations were clean and comfortable. The place has been recently renovated and was great! We would gladly stay here again. The only things I can think of that would have added to our stay were more pillows on the bed and a way to control the air in the room. Otherwise, tip top! Thanks for such a pleasant stay. read more

We stayed at Discovery Inn last weekend, and found it absolutely delightful. Starting with the wonderful resident managers, Matt and River, the whole experience was great. The rooms have been completely renovated, comfy beds, terrific pillows, AC that works perfectly, good lighting, instant hot water in shower and sink. What more would you want in a cozy inn? We loved staying here. The lawn games were a huge hit with my kids. Giant checkers, lawn bowling, bocce ball just to name a few, volley ball net, bbq area Family friendly. Lovely grounds. This little gem is outstanding. I work in hotels, so I know the business and I was BLOWN AWAY by the customer service. The front desk manager (cannot remember her name, I think it was Katie...blonde hair...sweetest lady ever) was SO kind and helpful. She deserves some type of award in customer service. She remembered it was my friend's birthday and wished her a happy bday. She knew we were there to see Orcas and when we were disappointed we didn't see them the first day, she eagerly asked the second day and was genuinely so happy for us that we did. She was so genuine and hospitable. They truly make you feel at home at the Discovery Inn. The rooms were great too. Clean, spacious and a nice little kitchenette and tv. The little hot tub was perfect after a day of kayaking and the little courtyard was so cute and picturesque to relax in. The ONLY little FYI will throw in there, and it is nothing bad on the hotel, is the distance from town. It is only about .7 miles, but all uphill. I know, .7 miles sounds short, we thought it would be too, but when you actually do it after a day on a boat or with luggage, it is too much. And we travel Europe a lot so we have no issues walking. But we ended up taking a $10.00 taxi ride each way most times, which adds up. But it was worth it. I want to live there hahah. I was very impressed and would recommend Discovery Inn. read more

The Discovery Inn was more than I expected. I booked a night here on the tail-end of a trip to Friday Harbor and Orcas Island and honestly should have stayed there the entire time. It was very clean. The beds were comfortable. We didn't have time for the pool but there is one. the managers went overboard helping me and my friend with a late arrival as well as held our luggage the next day so we could sightsee a bit longer. Beautiful manicured grounds. If there is anything someone may think is a negative it would be a hefty walk from the ferry. My friend and I rather enjoyed this walk though. read more
