One of the best mochas I've ever had. I didn't linger long enough to read much about their coffee but we did see bag after bag on the shelf from various places, like Costa Rica, Peru, Rwanda, and Ethiopia. One thing that struck me was the record player in the corner. At the counter they have the record jacket so you know what's playing. During our wait it was Lana Del Ray. The space is light and bright with large sky lights. There are plentiful cheerful, yellow chairs outside if you want to sip a latte and people watch. Several work-type meetings were taking place while we were there and it definitely seems like the kind of place to meet clients or get some work done. We found parking on the street easily. The guy who took our order was attentive and efficient. We also found some cool kombucha from Cultured Kombucha here that we haven't seen in the States. We'd been to a Discovery Coffee the day before but wanted to try a donut so we decided to drop by their Blanshard location before lunch plans. We dropped in on a Monday afternoon (around 11:45am). The place was busy with people grabbing coffees. Plenty of seating inside along with even more outside. The vibe is very chill and they were playing some good beats on vinyl. Service is much more friendlier here than at their Discovery branch. There were 8 Yonni donut options along with buns, scones, muffins and croissants. For drinks, there's three size options (8, 12 and 16 oz). They also have a wall of merchandise. Growler ($10.00) was cool along with t-shirts, sweaters and mugs. They had half a dozen options for coffee beans. - Earl grey ($3.50) - we wanted more earl grey flavour. The filling is on the small side and the texture wasn't as light and airy as I would have expected. Passable but that's it. - Latte ($4.25 for 8oz) - B went with their latte again but this time opted for skim milk. This one was more like a flat white. Smooth. Come for the coffee. I loved the plant wall, it's very clean and bright, I arrived late so a lot of the food was gone but picked up a Pulled pork pretzel bun Ice Vanilla latte Pet peeve is when I ask vanilla latte and you use simple syrup it goes Licorice-y really fast. I also not a huge fan of the bar still type chairs and high tops in coffee stop. The store itself while striking when you walk in with how much light floods in... A cortado caught out in the sunshine. The environment, atmosphere, and individuals (guests and staff) alike are what gets me excited about discovery coffee. As a virgin here, at least for coffee, I was jazzed to walk in on a sunny Sunday. Environment: A super inviting space filled with greenery, smiles, and crafty spaces, to work, socialize, read, and observe. Tons of natural light, no clutter - #winning. Coffee: As a one-a-week coffee drinker I hype up my coffee in a major way. The cortado was presented to near perfection with some intricate latte art (I was too excited so skipped the image) a cute little mug and coaster. The flavors didnt overly capture my attention and it was ever slightly bitter. I still enjoyed myself for a 4/5, and would highly recommend anyone going to check k out the central location. We stopped by this place because it seemed popular and we wanted to try it. The ambiance was nice and there was good outdoor seating. When we arrived at the counter, I asked the barista if they were more known for their espresso or cold brew (coming from Seattle, each coffee shop seems to have a more specialized area of excellence). The barista said the cold brew was great, but suggested I go with their espresso, in particular their limited time variety. She provided great recommendations for the best way to experience it, and I have to say I was quite impressed. Impressed enough that I bought a bag of beans to bring back with me to Seattle. CLASSIC DONUT 5/5 It is heavenly. First of all it's denser than regular say grocery store donuts. This parallels wonder breads airy breads to say a superstore loaf that is denser. The density is closer to an apple fritter with a cinnamon brown fry to the outside (my preference). The inside is still soft and not chewy but has more substance than say a superstore donut. It's quite sweet but the amount of glaze is good. HONEY CRUELLER 4/5 I prefer honey crullers without the glaze on top but this is a nice take on a honey crueller. It has the soft, sweet inside and the classic honey crueller folds. I actually prefer Tim hortons crueller because they're lighter. This is of course good as well. On Saturday March 7, I went to that location to get drinks for myself and my wife, and food for us and our baby daughter. We were on our way to the ferry, but had allotted plenty of time. There was one person in front of me. After he ordered his drink, he and the slightly built red-haired boy behind the counter moved off to one side and had a conversation for five or ten minutes. The content of their conversation was not important, or time-sensitive, or related to his order. It was just idle chatter, while I stood there at the cash register waiting to order and my wife and baby daughter waited in the car. Given prior shortfalls in service by the, frankly, snide and indifferent staff, I decided that I would afford Discovery Coffee one last chance. Yesterday morning, I went into that location to get my daily large latte. After my order was taken, I went and waited by the side where the drinks are dispensed. After the first person who ordered after me received their drink, also made with an espresso (so not just a drip coffee), I made note of the order the cups were in - mine was fourth behind three other espresso drink orders that had been ordered after me. After another drink was made for someone after me in line, I asked the short brown-haired girl behind the counter about my drink. She replied 'Yaw, there was a mix up in the order of the drinks' with a 'f-you' look on her face. I pointed out my cup and informed her that two drinks ordered after mine had been made, and the other two cups waiting were also ordered after mine. I also said to her "not even a sorry?". She replied, sarcastically, "oh gee, sawreee!" - again with the 'f-you' look. She then proceeded to make another drink ordered after mine, I can only guess out of spite, then made my drink. I had waited 8-10 minutes longer than I should have. I contacted them by email, was told the manager of that location would email me. Never happened. They have lost at least one loyal customer. read more
