I like the location of this place. It's along Cook street towards the direction of the ocean on the left coming from Yates st. I came here cuz I wanted to try something different today than Starbucks. The place is cozy. Plenty of tables on the sidewalk. Plenty of tables inside as well. I didn't think it was going to be conducive to someone reading or working but once you enter there's plenty of seats and table just for that to your left. Seats are comfortable enough that you can focus but not fall asleep. There's plenty of people working. There's a long line when I came in. They serve sandwiches, patties, some pastries. Pastries are mostly vegan or veggie, of that variety. I wish they had more choices of pastries as I was craving one. I ended up just ordering coffee. Im not sure how fresh those wrapped pastries are. Coffee is just about right, medium roast. Nothing spectacular but not bad either. Tried the Moka Ball which is basically peanut butter in a ball. It's hard and bit cold. Am not sure if it's supposed to be that way. It's ok. Wanted to get a sugar boost as I am feeling a little sluggish. Ambient music is also just right. Not blasting as some of the Starbucks stores do. You dont know if you're in a club or coffeeshop. This place has potential if they just have more fresh choices. A little friendliness from the staff would make wonders and convey warmth. There are times when you shouldn't show your face at Moka House as you get practically kicked out! Today, we were quite a big group that gathered at Moka House for some coffee and pastries. We were approached by an employee and advised that we were taking up too much space, and asked us to move outdoors. I had quite a discussion with this employee, and I informed her that we visit every Saturday and spend quite a bit of money. I also told this lady that the people that are wasting space, are the ones that sit with their laptops for a couple of hours or more, and maybe they order a coffee. In previous years, Moka House used to reserve an area for us, now we are made to feel unwanted. Before you start scaring customers away, think of all the implications. Rude barista with a beard and beanie. Also they charge for coffee refills at a discount. Literally coffee houses make a profit for coffee. They buy it in bulk. Also the staff here make you do their job for them. My friend put the dishes on the bar that were left on the table, and the barista yelled at him to put them in the bucket. My friend said "they weren't even my dishes!" Don't go here unless you like to do the baristas job or to pay for refills on drip coffee. Go to Starbucks across the street. Staff is never friendly. I feel scared to ask them for anything since all they do is scowl behind the bar. I have given this place around five attempts, as it's a good location to get a coffee & head to the beach, but each time they give the same rude service. Super awesome coffee shop. I love that this place stays open until 11pm! Pretty unheard of for coffee shops which makes it such a great place to hang out after school or work. It's a very cozy place with tasty hot chocolate (seriously!), coffee, and food! They've got nice sandwiches, wraps, soups, and pastries. There's plenty of seating however they will fill up fast! Moka House has an awesome patio (seriously one of the best in the city - especially in the fall/winter because it is heated.) It also has some great baked goods and some of the specialty drinks aren't bad. The coffee is actually pretty bad ... which is odd because it is a coffee shop and all... What gets me about Moka House is the terrible service and snotty people they hire behind the counter. And to be fair it is not everyone. Of course there are some really friendly people working but honestly I have come in some nights and walked out because of the attitude behind the counter. There is absolutely no way some of the staff they have could have cracked a smile even in the job interview. This leads me to believe that the owners just don't care at all about customer service. I am not exaggerating about this either - the place closes at midnight every single night, so there is no way you should be scowled at and treated like garbage because you walk in at 10:45pm but this is what happens. The sign on the door says something to the effect of "thank you for supporting local business" but with this kind of service I am more inclined to go across the street to Starbucks, which despite being a big corporation has some of the friendliest staff in the city. read more

Mediocre at best. The espresso is watery, the service is slow, and the food/pastries aren't really worth eating. The ambiance also leaves a lot to be desired. On several occasions the place has smelled noticeably like some kind of weird combination of wet dog and moldy carpet, the tables are too small for a laptop computer plus coffee mug, and the entire place feels kind of dark and cramped. Its one redeeming quality is that it's open until midnight almost every day of the year, which is a rare find in Victoria. read more

Given the multitude of cookie-cutter coffee shops that litter our city, I would have thought that an independent local joint like Moka House had a nice little niche to fill. Unfortunately it has all the posturing, "trying to be hip" vibe as the big boys without their success and stringent staff conduct regulations. Inconsistency is the name of the game here. Sometimes the coffee is ok, other times it tastes like the beans were incinerated and boiled along with a couple of gym shoes. The Cook St. location is crowded beyond belief while the Shoal Point location is barren. Go figure. I'll start by citing my bias: I only drink espresso, and I like to work as I sip a coffee. This place has mediocre espresso. They use a simple automatic machine. Their espresso is more like a watered down Americano. A couple of times I have not been able to drink it. It is slow service. Lines tend to be long, and then you have to wait for your coffee. So why do I go back? Because it is great to work. I love to sit and people watch. Their outside chairs remind me of the Parisian cafes. No Wifi Internet (you can pick up the one from starbucks, but you have to pay for it). They have an internet station, though. read more

Despite being known as a fan of that infamous mermaid signed place I do love local. Not being a coffee drinker I love that the Moka House has a wide variety of non-coffee choices. Tonight I tried the seasonally new Pumpkin Spice Chai Latte. If you like super sweet drinks this is a hit, but if you like your beverages to taste like something other than sugar opt for the regular. It's open really late, serves a good assortment of desserts and is a good destination for a nice long walk along Dallas Road. Absolutely terrible coffee! TERRIBLE! Literally some of the worst espresso I've ever had the displeasure of tasting. Couldn't even finish it. I even think I would choose Starbucks over the swill they serve at Moka House. It is also unbelievably expensive. If I remember correctly, they sell their horrid, stale beans for close to $20 a pound! Yet, despite all this, it never ceases to amaze me that it is always packed! If you go around the corner you will find Caffe Fantastico, which roasts their own beans (and sells them cheaper) and serves some of the absolute best coffee in the city, for almost half the price. If you're looking for a tasty treat, go to Bubby Rose bakery not a block away. There is absolutely NO reason to EVER set foot in this place. Moka House is a perfect example of how hype is unfortunately much more important than quality for a successful business. read more

Out of all the Moka Houses in Victoria, this location is open late. When I use to live there (about 2 years ago) I would often go there to work on my thesis because they were open late, had free wifi, and a decent amount of outlet plugs to plug in your laptop. The atmosphere was great and it had a lot of seating and an outdoor patio. The patio is great for pet owners. I would see owners with their dogs on the patio all the time in the summer. In terms of their coffee, I would only order their london fog so I can't comment on anything else. I found their london fog to be delicious, not too sweet unlike Starbuck's Earl Grey latte. It is also in a great location because the beach is a close walk, and Cook St Village is a nice stroll. Also, I never had any trouble finding parking out front or in the surrounding neighborhoods. Aside from the 24 hr Tim Horton's, not a lot of coffee shops are open late so this was a great spot to go to if you're a student! read more

As a frequent customer at Moka House, I have always enjoyed choosing a more local option than the Starbucks across the street. I was, however, disappointed to learn that the reason why day old baked goods are not made available is that staff are instructed to throw them in the garbage at the end of the night. In this day and age, it is absolutely deplorable to waste valuable food that most customers would gladly consume at a discounted rate. At the very least, Moka House should donate these items to a local food bank or set up a composting program. Due to this wasteful policy, I am less inclined to choose Moka House over the numerous, more progressive coffee houses in the downtown area and really hope that they find a better solution. (I would happily stockpile those day old cinnamon buns!!!) read more
