We stopped here for breakfast several mornings while we were in Victoria. The shop is conveniently located downtown and the coffee is good. The egg bun is so good and filling I had it more than once, and I think my hubby did the same with the cranberry muffin! The staff is friendly and the service is very good. There are several tables in the shop and it's a comfortable place to stay and eat. We would definitely return here when we are in Victoria. read more

Came here on November 13th, 2021. The staff was very friendly and easy going. Good cortado (got an extra shot for $1.45) on a rainy day to sit back, chat, and relax. I got the honey cruller and the double stuffed oreo which was also nice but probably not for me. The honey cruller can be a bit more textured on the outside or a bit more soft (it was kind of in-between which was interesting). This is a 5 star coffee shop. There is absolutely zero bitterness to their cold brew which is the mark of a well developed brew. The cold brew flight was the best deal if you want to try 4 of their house made brews. I also tried the kombucha and it had a great ferment and is flavored apple/ginger. This entire city is full of coffee places, Canada absolutely loves coffee. I don't think I even walked one block without seeing somewhere that was serving coffee. I visited many coffee places on my trip to Victoria but Discovery was the only place that stood out. Open at 630 am every day (even on holidays) Discovery is a great café to sit and enjoy a warm drink. This place off Menzies was one of many of their locations that serve local Canadian roasted coffee. Not only did they serve great coffee here but they had some really delicious pastries. Here you could find bagels, muffins, fritters, scones and donuts. The Yonni's brand donuts were almost sold exclusively at Discovery. When I visited Discovery I ordered a pour over from their Ethiopian blend of coffee along with a donut. The salted caramel donut (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/discovery-coffee-victoria-5?select=zi9QimIi-cIN0-FWIgNv_g) was massive and topped with plenty of chopped nuts. The donut had a perfect balanced glaze of salty/sweet caramel coating to it and the pastry was flaky soft. The sugary flavor along with the fresh brewed coffee made for a perfect way to start the morning. The donut was a bit too big to finish, so I took some to go. The café here isn't the largest but has a quiet mellow atmosphere to it along with free WiFi to do some work. They even have their own small parking lot, because street parking on Menzies can be tough to find at times. read more

Visited Victoria BC and decided to try a local coffee shop. There was a slight line but it went fairly quick. Ordered a medium size mocha and a house coffee along with 2 pastries (one being a tomato spinach cheddar scone and another being a honey cruller). As we were waiting for our coffee order, tried the honey pastry which was delicious. The scone was not, felt like it needed to be heated up to give it a warm taste. Also the spinach just seemed like big glunks. The mocha came out first, which was really great. However they forgot the house coffee, which we waited for 5 min. Afterwards had to go back in line to ask for the coffee again. Coffee seemed great but nothing too special for their house brew.. The coffee beans were pretty pricey as well. read more

I love this place more than is probably appropriate. Consistently excellent coffee and fresh house-made baked goods in an unpretentious and welcoming atmosphere. The baristas really enjoy coffee and interacting with people and it shows. They've recently added a feature espresso roast with different varietals and small-batch processing. Seems like every city has it's own 'trendy coffee chain.' From my experience in Vancouver, I would think JJ Bean would absolutely kill it in Victoria, but let's work with what we have.... Overall, the coffee at Discovery is decent, and everyone seems to like their donuts, which I have tried, and on both fronts I would give maybe 3/5 stars. Good, but nothing special. I also like the location, which is great for those who live/work in James Bay area. My main pet peeves with Discovery are as follows: 1) It takes forever to get served. On my last visit I actually timed how long it took to get my americano, and it was no less than 10 minutes. Not the end of the world, but sometimes people want to grab their drink and go. 2) All the employees seem to be raging hipsters complete with the hipster uniform of wearing toques(winter hats), thick rimmed glasses and skinny jeans. They also seem to enjoy having really long drawn out conversations with every customer, which probably leads to the long wait times as mentioned earlier. In summary, not my kind of place. You can go to Serious Coffee down the street and time travel back to the mid-nineties in terms of decor, but lots of seating area, and you get served uber fast. read more

So great! The coffee was well made with great roasts. And the baked goods were superb! Try the Cruller - it was phenomenal. The sticky bun is the size of your face and has an amazing caramel but the dough itself was too plain - I think the dough should be left longer to rise letting the yeast give off more flavour. This is located a block behind the legislative building. I came in for the free wifi because I am touring the country and needed to do some work. I had a regular ice tea for here and it was served in glass cups. I saw the barista weighing out the drink so I guess it's safe to say you won't be cheated an ounce! This review is more for Yonni's Doughnuts, which are made at this Discovery location. I feel like it would be redundant to pile on more comments about Discovery's fantastic coffee. I love the ideas behind the doughnuts from Yonni's, but I've never had one that really blows my mind. There always seems to be one thing or another that's a bit off. Their cruelers and old fashioned have great flavour, but they're often undercooked and mushy on the inside. Their pastry cream fillings are sometimes an unpleasant texture, like they haven't been strained after cooking. There are other small issues, but the ones I just mentioned seem the most important. My go-to doughnut these days is the salted caramel, which always seems to be cooked perfectly. Yonni's doughnuts: creative flavours, execution needs a little more fine tuning. read more

This was the second "restaurant" we visited on our trip to Canada -- if we find any more like this one I think we'll leave the country quickly. I wouldn't return to this place if they paid me 10 times the prices they charged. While the food was OK, the service was DEPLORABLE. We ordered the breakfast special which included two pancakes. The breakfast was served, the waitress whisked away quickly before we could mention we received no butter or syrup for the pancakes. I went to the counter where orders were placed and the woman behind the counter screamed at me to get to the end of the line. i accidentally stumbled upon discovery yesterday while i was visiting from the us, and i have to say. discovery is hands down the best random discovery i have ever made. the baristas brewed up some dank ass coffee that led me to buy a bag of beans and a mug to go home with, AND they played two of my favorite records that i stayed to listen to all the way through. if you have the time i recommend anything from the slow bar, as well as a shot of their espresso. i also got a flight of their cold brew, the stand out being the cascara soda, which was unbelievable. i am legitimately planning another vacation based around visiting this shop again. 10/10 recommend. read more

I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich which turned out to be spectacular. The chicken was tender and juicy, served with tangy tomato chutney in a fluffy focaccia sandwich. This is my favourite coffee place in town! My personal fave is the cold brew black because the coffee has so much flavour and very little acid that it's creamy and smooth and requires no milk or sugar. For something fun try the Nitro cold brew which is even lighter and has a foamy creamy texture. Their beans are excellent quality and fit in with the best roasters in San Fran, Seattle, Brooklyn. I'm a long time customer at the James bay discovery coffee. I've always enjoyed the atmosphere and the delicious coffee. Sunday morning May.7th However, I had a negative experience this morning. I ordered my usual, Americanos and an egg bun. The egg bun is my favourite item on the menu. This morning as I started eating it, I noticed a spoiled, rancid flavour and smell in the eggs. Super not normal to the regular delicious egg bun. I asked my partner what they thought and they agreed that there was definitely something wrong with the egg bun. We respect discovery coffee, and so we waited until the line died down to go and speak with the counter staff. We explained our unsatisfaction to the staff. They shrugged it off and said "yeah I think they just switched to different eggs." The one unfriendly gentleman working added "I had one this morning. It was great." And that was that. I expected so much more being a long time regular customer. Very poor customer service. Management should know how situations such as these are being handled. read more

I'm originally from Portland where good coffee is meant to be sipped, enjoyed, and filled with many scented aromas and flavored. Moving to Victoria had a downside...no good coffee. Every time I come here, I'm reminded why I love coffee and why I'm so picky. These guys know how to pull shots and make great foam for art. I absolutely love this little coffee shop. It's warm and inviting inside, the drinks are delicious and the doughnuts are amazing (and just a little bit different and weird). While in Victoria, I come here every morning and order a London Fog - they make the best London Fog I've ever had, complete with real specks of vanilla bean. The first time I came here I tried one of their salted caramel doughnuts, topped with pecans and a tad bit of rosemary. While it was wonderful, I have taken to their earl grey filled doughnuts as my pastry of choice. Mmm. read more

The espresso was really good, the drip coffee was a bit weak. Pastries were delicious (we had a spicy walnut caramel doughnut or something along those lines, delicious). Their sweetener options were limited if you are into that sort of thing, but the service and quality were awesome and so was the price. Definitely a good find. Update: we went again a second day in a row and the barista remembered us and was super friendly. I'm in here quite regularly since do my laundry close by. I'm not a coffer drinker but my wife/friends say it's good. I usually have a cup of tea. They have good selection and the service is always good. A cup of tea for $4 is pretty steep (sorry) in my opinion but it's specialty tea and that's unfortunately the norm these days. There are plenty of cafes in this area but I come back to Discovery because of the space and the service. They play a good selection of classic records, which is great. No sirius satellite repeats of canned garbage. The decor is simple and they have a collection of funky old coffee making apparati (which I know is not a word). They have free wifi which is a terrible business model for them but let's me get some work done while I hang around for two hours only buying one cup of tea... Maybe that's why it's $4! read more
