We wanted to try Yonni's doughnuts, which Discovery Coffee carries/sells for them, so we dropped in for a visit. DC is a popular spot to grab coffee (even saw a police officer come in for a brew). It shows with two other locations in town. We dropped in on a Sunday afternoon (around 2:00pm). The inside is very hipster but there's a lot of unused space in the middle of the shop. Someone wrote that service is rude and pretentious; I'd say more than accurate. Guy working the front was neither friendly nor helpful. They have a variety of coffee drinks along with some pastries and doughnuts. Sadly, they were completely sold out of the latter. Disappointing. - Latte ($4.75 for medium) - B added coconut milk ($1.00 extra). Bold, smooth flavour and not too milky. Closer to a flat white than your usual latte. Go early to get your doughnut fix otherwise you'll be SOL like us. read more

Looks like a simple place were students go to study have a coffee, and eats a little something like a donuts from the shop beside. Another good things bout this place is they have one small place and another one larger place were you can go with your coffee just beside, so there's plenty of space to study or read. The best, brightest, most complex coffee I've been able to (consistently) find in Victoria. This is one of the few coffee shops I've ever visited where I'm not sure what to order: the staff are all very skilled at pulling espresso shots, so any espresso drink is exquisite, but they also have a Clover machine, which pretty much forces you to appreciate coffee on a whole different level. read more

I'm not a huge coffee drinker, that's more up my husband's alley, so I tried out their homemade donuts while my hubs got an americano. According to him, it was clean and light but it didn't astound him in terms of flavour or anything. There was a wide variety of beans to choose from and we picked up some for a gift. I thought it tasted pretty standard but without the citrus aftertaste which I enjoyed. The old fashioned donut we got was a bit dry, not surprising since we got there around 4, but was fine with a mouthful of coffee to wash it all down. The honey cruller on the other hand was delicious! The glaze had a nice subtle crispness and the insides were buttery and cool. I'm not usually a fan of the cruller but this one was incredible!! Nice atmosphere, with Singer machines adapted to be coffee tables, gives a wonderful touch to this nice café. The other magic touch, which I really appreciate being from the country of cappuccino, was that they ask you if you would rather get the "traditional" size. Feels like home again. read more

Six years ago I moved away from Victoria. One of the things I was sad to leave behind was Discovery's Americano. It never disappointed. The humble space and staff was edgy and the cuppa was reliable. You knew, when ordering, that you'd be charged a fair price for a great cup of coffee. Fast forward to today -- waking up in a nearby hotel I was excited to finally have a Discovery Americano. Sadly, it was not the same and I dare say, not even close. After my husband (on my HIGH recommendation) ventured over to DC, he came back grumbling about the "snobby service" and price. The Americano that I remembered was gone -- replaced with something reminiscent of a cup of Keurig with too much water added. So unfortunate. Tomorrow we will go elsewhere as it seems the Dis in Discovery now stands for Disappointing. .... as does the half eaten donut in the trash. read more

By our second date I knew all of this about my new long distance lover: -A properly prepared Americano does not need any added sugar (but I still like my cream) -A siphon is 2 beakers and a fuel cell with a $100 price tag - for very serious coffee connoisseurs. -Baristas visit from around the world and they have won worldwide competitions for their barista's skills. -Records playing through speakers is the most awesome way to swoon and swap with your lover. -Making a penny tower is doable - and I contributed a few pennies to the baristas (in between costumers) efforts. -Their almond croissant is the BEST I've ever had... in my life! Holy Moley I have to review this place. We were in Victoria this weekend and stayed and the Travellers Inn right up from this amazing coffee shop. The drip is UNBELIEVABLE! All four of us were sad when our cups became closer to empty and would have easily returned for second and third cups if our day wasn't so busy.. All I can say is that this place beats out anywhere I have ever had coffee and as a no sugar, no cream, black coffee all the way-girl, I tasted it in it's purest form. PERFECT. read more

Discovery Coffee in downtown Victoria is an excellent little shop that brews a cup as good as the best you'll find in the Vancouver scene. It's just a little bit outside the downtown tourist area -- it wasn't even on the map I had -- but that just means the cruise shippers won't beat you there. The shop is outfitted in a turn-of-the-century Main Street aesthetic with vinyl playing in the back (swing?). I attended Discovery for a Sunday morning breakfast of a cherry danish, a bottle of local, organic apple juice, and a cafe macchiato. The espresso was well-balanced and perfectly extracted with their Synesso machine; it was easily the best I had on my trip to the Island. The danish was excellent, too! The folks behind the counter were friendly and helpful. The shop has free wireless but few outlets. I wished I could stay longer. The house brewed coffee is made with the aid of a French press; I left with a cup of it for novelty's sake but I was surprised to find it thin and bitter. I would've had a much poorer impression if I'd started with it: go for espresso or have a Clover or pourover cup. read more

Discovery Coffee served me the first truly great latte I've had in Victoria. They roast their own beans and supply some of the local cafes. The croissants are good and so are the cookies, an important part of any good coffee shop! Most importantly the staff are always cheerful and the space is comfortable and welcoming. This coffee is some seriously good stuff, the beans have so much flavour and very little bitterness you can really get away with very little to no sugar. If you've been to the famous Blue Bottle Cafe for coffee it is very comparable. In fact, they even do a similar pouring for individual cups! If you are a REAL coffee connoisseur and willing to spend around $8 for a cup of coffee then they have specialty brews here that are definitely worth the experience! Quite a noisy environment, but still good for getting some work done on my laptop :) There are pastries & donuts (I didn't try) but it doesn't have any breakfast or lunch food. Every espresso the baristas pull is gold. But in addition to the incredible coffee, Discovery gets five stars because of the space. The gallery, the additional seating space beside the main cafe, is one of the best spots for co-working in south Vancouver island. With wifi, a quiet vibe and many people working away, for independent contractors like me this place is a local gem. The main cafe is busy on a day-to-day basis and for good reason. Perfect mocha! The espresso has amazing flavour, and they blended the drink with real chocolate. The balance was perfect and so was the sweetness. Awesome. The ambiance feels warm and cozy. The staff were super friendly and knowledgable. We had a great 30 second conversation about our passion for caffeine which was delightful. I would recommend this place highly for anyone who loves their coffee. Best shop on the island for me so far! read more

I had heard that the Yonni's donuts here we amazing, so I headed over to get myself a treat. I ordered an old fashioned and a medium dark roast. The coffee was empty, but whatever, it happens. At least it will be super fresh, right? The coffee was mediocre at best. For a dark roast it was very weak and bland. The Yonni's donut was the flavour and consistency of slightly overcooked white bread gone stale. Very little mace flavour, a thick chewy crust, and a tough crumb. If it wasn't frosted it would have been inedible. I've been told they are amazing. But can be inconsistent. I'm sorry, but if you can't make a consistent product then you don't get my business. I won't be going back to Discovery coffee when there are so many better choices in town. read more

Everytime I'm here I have exceptional service, and I have ordered several different things from their menu and I can't seem to find anything bad. Espresso is always so perfectly pulled. We went to this location after enjoying the James Bay location, and honestly I was a little disappointed. The coffee was good but not amazing, the pastries were great but no sandwiches, it was small and crowded and the people were a little rude until they found out my husband was a barista, after which they gave us a list of coffee shops to hit up in Victoria. I think it just wasn't quite as cozy and friendly as the james bay location, hence the loss of a star. read more
