Discount has a pretty decent selection. The N scale was a little underwhelming. Lots of the things I needed were behind the counter and the staff made it seem like I was inconveniencing them by asking to get them. As others have stated it's a little unassuming when you first pull up as it is located in an industrial park. But boy, once you walk through the door! Instant model train heaven! Welcomed immediately by Wayne the manager who very kindly directed me to the scenic stuff area which is why I went there , anyway there are trains galore all sorts of engines,rolling stock, buildings and accessories. They do have a layout set up to enjoy. Prices seemed reasonable and comparable to what I saw online. However the big plus is they have lots to choose from in the way of scenic accessories, ballasts, gravels, trees and so on You name it and I heartily believe Discount Trains will have it. I visited this store after traveling 2.5 hours, and when I did get there, and entered the store, what a disappointment. Do not waste your time with these guys, the 2 gentlemen that I met were unfriendly, and did not want to give you the time of day. Now I will be honest, I am not extremely knowledgeable, and was hoping to get advise from these guys, but what I got was insults, and a nasty disposition. I like Oguage, and have a collection, these guys are basically every other scale, even though when I called and spoke to them, they made it sound like they had a big collection, which is far from the truth. They told me that the hobby was dead because young people today like computers, and are not interested in toy trains. Fair assumption, but what is another issue is the attitude these guys have, and if you are new, and want to get into the hobby, don't see these guys, they are not there for that reason, they are just there to sell. My advise, go online, and there are plenty of dealers, and places you can get advise from. Don't wast your time with this store. Sad, but collecting trains for many years, you meet these type of people, know it all's, and not willing to share their knowledge freely. read more

After a day full of run-arounds, I called discount model trains and asked if they did repairs on wiring. After explaining how long the person in charge of repairs (Leonard) would be here, my wife and I quickly made our way to this awesome shop. Despite being kind of hard to find the place, we were amazed by how large the selection was, and how friendly the staff was. Not only was I given an honest answer, that he wouldn't be able to fix my bike today, but Leonard went out of his way to make sure both he understood how my bike operated, and how I could go about replacing the missing pin. The only reason we didn't buy something was due to low funds, and we will definitely be back soon to try and get into the train scene. Thank you guys for being honest and straightforward. read more

I just recently moved to the DFW area, so when a friend suggested that we go visit his favorite train store I was skeptical. In this hobby, to support local, normally means paying considerable more. Anyways, with a new State and new home, I had decided to build a new layout. I found an existing track plan that needed to be slightly reduced due to room size. The very knowledge staff first assisted me with finalizing what type of track to get. I was leaning in one direction but with their advise and suggestions, went the other way. The other issue was the actual track purchase. Determining exactly what I was going to need was going to be difficult because on the reduced size layout. They suggested that I just purchase everything as stated on the track plan, and return at a later date whatever is extra. Even if that is a year from now. That was super customer service and not something you would normally find elsewhere. So, I went ahead with the purchase, not knowing if I was going to be taken to the cleaners or not. After I got home, I checked several items that I had bought against online prices. Everything that I checked was in fact cheaper at the store. I am a very happy customer and will be sure to return to them for all of my future model railroading needs. read more

Amazing place for model trains! Sometimes, especially during the holidays, they get low on stock. Plus when COVID-19 started everyone was buying tracks and parts to have something to do at home! If you ask about when things will come in stock, they can tell you when they are expecting their next shipment for that item or a group of items (of course delivery is wishy-washy so it's an estimated time). Everyone there is super friendly and really tries their best to help you!! Sometimes they get really busy though so if you're patient you'll be able to get a question answered. Plus pre-orders!! If you see something in a catalog or online, they will do their best to order it for you! If you can't pick up the pre-order quite yet, just give them a call and they can hold it for a while. If you are out of the DFW area or even out of state, you can always call and see if you can order things and have it shipped to you! The Manager Wayne is very friendly and hardworking and Dave is usually the other person on the floor but he does a lot of the unpacking and sorting of items. Sometimes you'll see the owner, James, but he does paperwork in the office most of the time. I highly recommend this store if you're in Dallas!! Even if you're just visiting Texas, and want a top notch model trainstore to go to, this is it! read more

The selection was warehouse style with variety. It's located in a light industrial commercial zone so I expected it to be far less accommodating in regards to cleanliness, decor, and stock, but I was wrong, my first impression is I was definitely amazed at the store overall especially with the inventory. As a 1/87 scale modeler I have been a patron of hobby stores for over 35 years and seen hundreds including Hawaii and I give this store a thumbs up! Unfortunately, the customer service I give a thumbs down considering hobby stores are really about the store owner/service rep. connecting with people and their stories then helping them scale that story into something to share at a cost of course. I was in the store for over 30 minutes and not addressed, acknowledged or asked anything the entire time. The sales person may of had a bad day or other issues on his mind, but it wasn't hard to see he was irritated. The other two sales persons were in their own world of railroad talk, paying no attention to me wandering around. If you're looking for supplies this is definitely the place. If your dollars are spent based on customer service my first impression is not here. I am not Local to the shop so keep in mind this was a one time visit only as I live 2 hours away. If this shop was local from me, more than likely I would continue to patronize this business during impulse purchases, but I would continue ordering online as I do now since there are no adequate hobby stores near me. read more

This is about the only spot in the Dallas area for a big selection of model train stuff. I have recently picked up the hobby and model with HO scale. The guys that work there are real knowledgeable but can sometimes come across as intimidating to the beginner hobbyist. But still, lots to select from and they give food advice. read more

Was in the area and I'm always looking for local train shops. Being from Denver, I have been spoiled with Caboose Hobbies. They are truly one of the best shops for this part of the country. That being said, this store has to be it's rival. Absolutely a great selection of everything to be in the hobby. Tons of HO, plus everything else to keep you coming back.
