This is the third time Discount Energy Services has helped me over the last 15 years or so - 2 house attics were air-sealed and then insulated with blown cellulose, a garage attic was insulated with blown cellulose, and the walls of a mansard roof/wall were insulated with packed cellulose. This is a small, family-owned business with extraordinary experience and expertise. The owner said he's been in thousands of attics and I believe him. He always does the initial visit and estimate, and provides lots of information from his experience. No slick sales pitch, just expertise and solutions. Somehow their prices are also always the best - I suspect this is because they do not have to pay salespeople/estimators since the owner handles that. Highly recommended. If you are getting a few quotes, give them a call. If you don't want to bother getting multiple quotes, give them a call. Kevin came and combed over my house providing what at the time was a reasonable root, cause analysis and solution to my cape cod house for excessive heat and warmth on the second floor during the summer and excessive weather events. Took the plunge and over $3K later and several years, my house is a fucking oven upstairs compared to the time prior to Discount Energy Sevices (DES) Installation of "their" solutiion. Turns out, after two independent assessments by truly professional companies, DES did insulate but made the problem worse by creating hot box attics without ventilation. Bottom line - don't use these charlatans and do extreme due dilligance on all others in this racket. Scammed and hope you won't be. BeWARE! read more

My husband and I had Kevin come out to do an estimate to insulate our attic, which was our second estimate. DES came in about $1,300 LESS than the other estimate we had. Right off the bat that's great to see, but the actual winner winner chicken dinner of the situation was that DES said they would be able to insulate our addition through our main attic space, that no cutting from the outside would be needed. The first estimate? HAD to cut through from the outsides because "there was just no getting it done from the main attic space." That little piece alone showed that DES takes the time and effort during their estimates to make sure they are doing the best job for the situation. Kevin came back out for the beginning of the job itself and was incredibly kind and pleasant while his team got started. He supervised for about an hour then let us know he had to get going, but that we could always call if we needed to speak with him directly instead of his team. During the job his team (made up of two men) were easy to speak with and had extensive knowledge regarding the two questions I had throughout the day. I basically forced them to take up my offer for food and drinks, but I think they mostly drank the waters I kept bringing them out of kindness. All in all I would recommend DES to anyone who is looking for good customer service and quality work from people who really know what they're doing/talking about. read more

He showed me exactly where and what he would do to insulate the attic. I had a very drafty living room so I needed help ASAP. He suggested where to put insulation and even told me I didn't need to put insulation in a spot I thought needed it. His prices were good and I appreciate his expertise and knowledge. I have mixed feelings about Discount Energy Services: Pros: they came and insulated our back room. It does feel warmer, and the price was reasonable. Cons: you need to be ready to repaint the room (see photos). They are quite slow and a bit amateurish. It tooks almost 4 weeks to just *schedule* them to come after I sent the $200 deposit check and they cashed it in. They already came 2 or 3 times, as opposed to the just one time they said they would. Finally, almost 6 months after start, there is still one part of the work that remains to be done, despite my many email requests. I'm giving up and will finish myself. read more

We had a situation in our attic that you may also have in yours. We were experiencing excess condensation on our master bathroom walls and couldn't figure out why. We were in the midst of getting paint estimates to paint the bathroom and the painters recommended we consult an electrician to see if we needed a new exhaust fan. One of the electricians suggested we have somebody come out and check the insulation in our attic. I contacted Discount Energy Services and, as it turns out, they offer free estimates. So far so good. They also turned out to be very responsive, reasonably priced and a pleasure to deal with! After looking in our attic, Kevin told us that we had some areas of our attic where there was NO insulation at all and other areas where the insulation had fallen down from the walls. The code has also changed since the insulation was originally installed in the early 90's. So we had it all remedied yesterday. They repaired the areas where the insulation had fallen down and upgraded to R49 insulation throughout our entire attic. Now it's up to code again. HUGE improvement already and no condensation on our bathroom walls after this morning's showers! You may have the same problem we had and not even know it. The money we will save on our electric bills alone will pay for the new insulation within 4-5 years. We're only sorry we didn't do this sooner. Kevin, the owner, came out on installation day and walked his workers through the entire job. He also came back at the end of the job to make sure everything was done to our satisfaction. Kevin is a real stand up guy who is honest, personable and has great workers who were very respectful of our home and our belongings. They left no trace of ever being here and I have absolutely no reservations about recommending them highly! read more

I want to offer a potentially more balanced assessment of Discount Energy Services than Sami's 1/23 review based on my experience having them out to assess my attic and then re-insulate it. I scheduled an evening appointment for an estimate and Kevin showed up on time. He looked at my attic with me, talked me through what he saw, and then sat at my dining room table with me to discuss the work he'd recommend. He answered my questions - which were based in part on a recent energy audit I had completed - to my satisfaction and his proposed scope of work was essentially the same as what the auditing company had suggested. His price, however, was considerably lower than the audit company's. I let him know that I'd consider the proposal, and he was not at all pushy. He let me know about his experience and his crew (with which he described working for 10 years), shook my hand, and left. While Kevin was here, I did learn that he and his wife, Nicole, co-own the business, which they run out of their home. I'd be remiss for not pointing out that this is, almost exactly, what people refer to as a "Mom-and-Pop" shop, though admittedly, I don't know if they have children. It's also worth pointing out that with a name like "DISCOUNT Energy Services," one should expect less frills as this is reflected in the cost savings - this was my experience, particularly when contrasting Discount Energy Services with the other company I interacted with. I did have some minor difficulties communicating with them (one unanswered email and difficulty understanding Nicole when my call was forwarded to her cell phone), but when I let her know I was having a difficult time hearing her, she immediately switched to a landline. Like Kevin, she was also fairly knowledgeable about insulation when I asked whether some additional work could be added while their crew was here. On installation day, Kevin, Jose, and another installer arrived at about 11 AM (I was told they'd be here between 10 and 11). I would have preferred an earlier start, but they did not rush the job - they were here until 8:30 PM. Jose was kind, careful, patient, and friendly. As other reviewers have commented, he was also incredibly neat and clean. I couldn't believe how spotless our upstairs was after all the work they did. The temperature difference in my home was immediately noticeable. Taking a balanced perspective, considering the quality and cost of the work done by Discount Energy Services, I rate them 4 out of 5. Yes, communication and organization could be improved, but I'll point out (again) that adding features to the business (e.g., a storefront, office, full-time receptionist, etc), would undoubtedly be passed on in increased cost to customers. We had a good experience with Discount Energy Services. I scheduled 3 estimates (1 didn't show). Another company gave me a price slightly lower (by $200) than to DES but we chose DES because they seemed to provide better value. We had the old insulation in our attic removed and had 13" of cellulose insulation blown in. They let me look at their work after and there certainly is much more insulation in my attic. Most importantly the top floor of my townhouse is now much cooler. It used to be 10 degrees warmer in the Summer than the main floor and 10 degrees cooler in the Winter. Now both floors feel basically the same. Here's hoping the see the same improvement in the Winter! read more

Kevin and his team did an outstanding job with our attic. It was a long project in that we had them come out and remove all the old insulation and then spent months with other improvement projects within the attic before having them come back and install the new baffles and insulation. No problem for them and they were flexible with our schedule. Very clean crew as I imagined it would be awful but ending up being much more clean than I thought. The price was reasonable and had make a significant difference in the heath of our house as well as our energy bills. I would highly recommend them! read more

One word: AMAZING! - Next day service - Flexible timing - Competitive price - Friendly and honest What I had done: - Take down insulation on cellar ceiling, foam holes, put old insulation back up and another layer of R-19 -- this was because the floors and rooms above were cold - Insulated attic area all around the house Result: I haven't had to run my A/C the past week because the house stays between 74-77°F, and I'm excited to see what my power bill looks like! I originally asked Kevin to come out and give me an estimate in March when I had an energy assessment done. I got distracted by other projects and never got around to taking care of the insulation. I called back in September to see if they would still be able to make it out to do the work, and Kevin came out the next day to reassess and make sure the estimate was still accurate. I had my basement remodeled within the past year, and I was skeptical of whether or not the contractor sound proofed the bedroom ceiling as they were supposed to. I called and spoke with Nicole who set me up with an appointment for Kevin to come out to give me an assessment. In-line with my previous experience Kevin was very knowledgeable and helpful. In the process of speaking with him about my basement project, I showed him a wall I recently noticed that had bulged from too much insulation. To my surprise, he said he'd take care of it. I called Nicole a couple days after he came out to give me an assessment of the sound proofing to have him come out and fix the bulging wall, which he did. Insulated my attic for about half the price of two other quotes that I got. One of those was from another insulation company that suggested exactly the same solution for my attic (blown in insulation). The other quote was from my general handyman guy. Kevin came to the house, inspected the attic and measured, and wrote up the quote on the spot. As the best bid I received by far, I signed on the spot. Recommended against taking the old fiberglass insulation out which would have cost extra, and because they would be air-sealing up there anyway, so old dust particles etc would not be coming through. Discount energy came out to insulate my attic earlier this year. They installed fiberglass cellulose and batts. Within a week the insulation began off-gassing badly. I had headaches, throat and eye irritation and other allergeric symptoms so badly that I couldn't even sleep in my bedrooms which were on the upper level below the attic- the middle of summer and I had all the windows open with the a/c running and I was still miserable. I called Nicole to ask what type of insulation they had installed. She told me and said she would talk to Kevin (owner) and he would come out to check. Long story short, Kevin never bothered to come out. Instead, he sent the factory rep for the cellulose manufacturer (applegate) a Mr. David Dillard who diligently tried to help and even drove several hours to have a sample tested. I went to several doctors and even had a new attic fan installed at a cost of several hundred dollars. It has taken months, but the insulation has finally stopped off-gassing to the point where I can tolerate it. I still don't know if it was the cellulose or the batts (john Mansville manufactuer). I only know I didn't have the symptoms before the insulation was installed. I would never use this company again because of the service. Nicole was concerned and responsive, but Kevin couldn't be bothered enough to even come out to see if he could address the problem. Used them for blown in insulation in my walls and attic. The quote was good and the workers were great. Very happy with product but, like the other reviewers, I could not get an invoice. I called and emailed for four months and nothing. Then filed complaint with BBB and nothing. Finally filed complaint against their license with state of Virginia and, 8 months after work, finally received invoice and asked me to withdraw complaint. I would not recommend them because if I had to go thru so much just for an invoice, I can only imagine how unresponsive they would be if I had had a problem with the work. Do not deal with this scam artists. Whilst they put on the front of bring a 'professional organization', this is a two man team, Nicole and Kevin who hire labour to complete their installations. Kevin came to our house on Sunday to give a quote which seemed quiet reasonable. He promised us the job will be done 'within the week' and took a $200 deposit. After not hearing back from him or his team I contacted the 'company' on Tuesday. This is when Nicole told me that I will receive a call back by the end of the day to schedule in Saturday. I did not receive a call back from her and called the next day only to be told that the job cannot be completed this week (as promised) and that she will let us know if it can be completed the following weekend by thurday of next week. So in essence we will need to wait till next week to find out if the job can be done the weekend after. Having told her that this is unacceptable as we were promised the work will be done sooner and asking her for a set date, she said that we would have no choice in the matter. When asked if we could cancel the contract she said that we are over the 36 hours allowed to retract. We just checked our bank account and the $200 'deposit' has already been cashed and we have no idea if our installation will be done. Avoid at all cost. read more

Sent a request for an estimate through their website expecting that I would get a phone call to set up an appointment. Instead, they just showed up at my door one evening a few weeks after I submitted the request. So, I let them give an estimate despite already having an appointment with another contractor to do the work in a few days. Their cost estimate was competitive and the quality of their materials (e.g., recessed light seals, attic door tent, cellulose v. fiberglass, etc...) seemed a little better so I went with them instead. On the day of the work, the guys showed up about 2 hours late in the rain but they worked straight through and finished in about 5-6 hours. The sprayed in cellulose was done very neatly (storage items covered with plastic, etc...) and it definitely has cut down on the draftiness in our home. Still too early to estimate the impact on our heating and cooling bill but I'll be hoping for a 10-15% savings per month, especially in the summer. Like Sarah C., I too am still waiting on an invoice for tax purposes. All in all, once on site they do good work and you should be pretty pleased if you can look past the apparent organizational issues in their office. read more

Well, we had our attic insulated in november. After coming out once, and setting up (i.e., dragging tubing through out house and up into our attic), the guys realized they did not have all the material they needed...so they came back a week later. I guess the job they did was fine (i don't know anything about insulation, but our heating bill is much cheaper than it was last year) but it has been near IMPOSSIBLE to get an invoice from these people. My husband and I have been trying to get one for 3 months now! I resorted to calling the office every few days for the past 2 weeks and we STILL do not have an invoice. It wouldn't be a big deal, except we would like to file our taxes and get the Dept. of Energy credit, which would be in excess of $1,000. Can't do that without an invoice!!! read more

We learned the shoddy insulation in our attic ( house was built in the 80s) was totally inadequate and the reason our upper floor was never cool in summer or warm in winter despite a new HVAC system. The estimator, Kevin, is extremely knowledgeable about the insulation business and provided me with information regarding the job that none of the other estimators did. Even though his estimate was slightly lower than any of the others, the main reason I went with his company is because of his long experience in the business. The crew consisted of two techs, a supervisor and helper, and both worked the entire time they were here. Both techs were extremely friendly and courteous. The supervisor has been working with the company for ten ears, which I consider a positive. After they finished the job, they cleaned up everything. Given that I was the one who made the appointment, I don't really understand the thought process. They beat 2 other estimates by 40% which initially made me skeptical, but their work was top notch. We noticed a temperature difference immediately. If I only had one word to describe this company, it would be "Awesome". Everything from start to finish. The inspector Kevin came out and on time to provide and estimate. He explain the different options and what I really needed. My home is only 7 years old but the general contractor took some short cuts, such as not properly insulating my attic as well as the dormers over my front porch. Geez! It's hard to find an honest general contractor. Well, Kevin gave me the estimate and his crew was out the very next day. They were very professional and conscious of neatness. Everyone we dealt with at Discount Energy Services did a great job. We had to install new insulation in the attic over our newly-renovated kitchen because the contractor who remodeled the kitchen had to remove the original insulation when they replaced the ceiling, Discount Energy Services brought our lower attic insulation up to 17" (R-49) with class A white fiberglass, plus various baffles, batting, and sealing. Mr. Ferguson, the congenial owner of the company, clearly listed all the details of the job in the contract. The company's office communicated very professionally to schedule the appointment and keep us informed of the crew's arrival time, and the very polite technicians completed everything within four and half hours. The only thing we were concerned about was that the crew arrived almost at the end of the work day (4:17pm) and we felt bad to see the workmen putting in such long hours. The job was done to spec and beautifully; the technician invited us to climb up his ladder to inspect his work after he had finished. The clean-up inside the house was meticulous; outside left a little to be desired, as we had to sweep the driveway the next morning of some solid residue from the materials the crew used. This was understandable, as they could not see well in the darkness, and that's another reason why we wish the job could have been done during the daytime hours. But that's a small detail. We had a great experience with this company, and our investment in the new insulation is worth every penny. This company's price was quite reasonable compared with quotes we got from other companies, their attention to the details of the job was great, and we're happy that our kitchen is no longer the coldest place in the house. read more
