While shopping for a laptop, I went here first. The selection was extremely poor, and what's worse, was overpriced. Mr. Notebook was a much better option for purchases. I recently popped off a key from my keyboard. No biggie, I've done that before and successfully put them back in place. This time, however, I broke off a small plastic piece. Since Discount Electronics is around the corner, I gave them a call. The salesman told me you cannot put keys back on! I'd have to buy a whole new keyboard for $29!!!! WHAT?? I thanked him for his service and promptly called Mr. Notebook. They said they'd sell me a key for $5. Okay...better than $29. I went over to Mr. Notebook and they replaced my plastic part in 5 minutes for free. I'm no fan of their customer service, but I when in need, they get the job done. Discount Electronics tried to scam me into buying a whole new part, all the while knowing it's very possible to replace a key. Very poor and pathetic customer service. WARNING, DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY! I first need to say that I am guilty of purchasing an item from a company with unfavorable return policy. I did not check. it is clearly my mistake for assuming that this company would want me to be completely satisfied with my experience with them. It all began with an order for a power cord for my daughter's laptop. I did get the item within a reasonable amount of time-5 days. It was, however, the wrong item. This is where it gets interesting. This company has a no return shipping/no refund policy-even if it is clearly their own mistake, as it was in this case. They said that I was issued a store credit, though. I guess I should be happy? The store credit would be okay, but I have a personal policy, maybe just an inside feeling, about giving a company that can't get it right the first time a second chance. Sorry, It is just a feeling. I paid return shipping for their mistake to get rid of the item that I did not even order. They, of course, stated that I needed to see their terms of sale, and that no refund of the return shipping would be given. So I am out of even more money, completely dissatisfied, and want to help out the next nice family from making the same mistake that I made. You would think that in this business climate of today a company would strive for complete customer satisfaction. Not this company! DO NOT BUY FROM THIS COMPANY! I don't know for sure, but it appeared to me, and this might just be my own opinion, that they might not even have had the part that they advertised as having. You see, it didn't matter, because once I made the purchase, they had my money, and they were not giving it back, even if it was clearly taken by misleading me about having the item in the first place. This place is doing exactly what they set out to do - sell used computer stuff and they do it very well. we've bought a bit from the south store and the staff did seem to enjoy what they're doing (very geeky and helpful). If you're looking for new or hot rod equipment - not your place. It's the only reason we took a star. Overpriced if you need a PC with a lot of power. However, if you just do email, internet, some word processing - buying new is just dumb. If you can't refurb your own PC, talk to this place and they'll tell you all about OpenOffice (free MS Office thing), Thunderbird (kinda outlook but free), and Firefox. These guys appear to have a deal with Dell's leftovers and PC stuff generally doesn't break, its software gets infected and dirty quick because that's the nature of Microsoft. We bought two PC's, four LCD's, a power supply, mice, keyboards, wireless nic, some cables and they threw in some Iphone covers all for south of $1k. This was after going to Sam's for two PC's and a couple of LCD's for over $2500. That's savings and they work great. Does suck that you can't get XP disks with the keys on the PC. They use ghost images to load and if you ever have to reload, good luck. read more

The first time I went to this store two years ago when our Dell laptop power brick died I didn't expect much and was surprised to find a clean organized store with lots of inventory on the floor. I paid 75% less for the power brick here than Dell. I recently stopped in for desktop speakers and found that all models were connected for a demo even the $7 and $9 options. I left spending less than $10 with new in the box (refurbished) speakers with a 90 day warranty. read more

My experience was very mixed. Went in to get a 2nd opinion of a PC that I custom built and wouldn't start up properly (no POST in PC repair speak). I'd hate to take that on, but they were totally fine with it.. The tech did poke around and based on the email updates, he's competent, but didn't offer any more information than I went in with, albeit it was implied that the motherboard was indeed the problem, as they offered to replace it. This is where things went a little downhill. They quote me $200+tax for the part (I paid $85+tax for the original) and $100 labour. I found the former usurious and the latter pricey, switching it out takes less time than the diagnostic work they performed for $25. I told them I'd prefer to receive the machine back and deal with Amazon, where I bought the parts, and they were totally fine about it. However, the counter guy tried to bulls**t upsell me, something I really despise and the cause of the 2 stars .... I could imagine them doing it to a less tech savvy customer. He tried to justify the motherboard price by saying it wouldn't come with a better warranty (no it wouldn't) and told me that it was possible a BIOS update was needed for it to POST (never true, or else how would you load new BIOS?). In any event the parts are certified compatible with each other, the board is made for the CPU I bought. I will say that while I was there they did help an older gentleman who got a virus on a laptop he purchased from them, and they did it professionally and free of charge. read more

I called Discount Electronics and spoke to a salesman about upgrading my home office to include a laptop, two monitors, docking station, and sound system. I fill my cart online, picked up the items in store, and set it up at home...didn't work. I called into the store and the next person had no idea what I was talking about! They told me to call back next week. The next Monday I got a third person who told me to bring everything back to the store. After lugging all of the equipment to store, it turns out the first guy sold me the wrong connectors. Luckily, the third guy will give me a "discount" on the right connectors when I trade in the wrong connectors. Wow lucky! I get everything home, set it up, and...didn't work. The monitors won't work in extended mode, the mouse wasn't recognized by the docking station and one of the monitors wasn't in good condition anyway! I took everything back the next day for a refund and they hit me with a 15% restocking fee (minimum $15.00) and store credit only. It's a scam on top of a scam! Joe from internet sales was rude, the sales team is inept, and the products are most likely stolen. Don't ruin your Christmas like I did; save yourself the headache and buy from someplace that knows what they're doing. read more

There is nothing "discount" about electronics that fail within eight days of purchase and a store that won't take the item back. I purchased a Belkin surge protector from the Anderson lane location about 8 days ago. It worked initially but soon failed and nothing plugged into it would work. I am aware their return policy asks for a receipt. On the day in question I was in a rental truck and accidentally left the receipt in it. I thought to myself "If I bring in the item (which is a very specific surge protector that they have a giant box of in the store) the card I made the purchase on, and my credit card statement showing the exact amount/date of the purchase they could easily look in their point of sale system for that day to verify the purchase was authentic and recent." According to the person who told me "His hands were tied" the reason they cannot look it up in their system is they make a lot of sales every day and they "probably" have multiple sales on that same day for the amount of my sale so it wouldn't be possible to find the sale. That makes absolutely no sense. I'm sure their store does great volume but I purchased some wires as well and the chances of having so many transactions on the same day for my specific amount that it would be impossible to pull up the one, perhaps two matching receipts from that day and verify whether the purchase took place is absurd. I work in retail and I understand why they have the policy they do, however at our stores and at most, if you do not have a receipt but have the exact transaction information (amount, date), payment method used, and the item does not appear abused then returns are processed. Instead they put forth a ridiculous explanation that treats the customer like an idiot. I used to tell everyone about their great prices. Now I'll tell everyone about their product's high failure rate and terrible customer service. read more

What gets me is that their so called refurbished items like power adapters, laptop batteries, and monitors are not refurbished at all but just plain ol' used. It's an outright lie. Do you really think that I'm going to believe that a dusty monitor with gunk on the back is refurbished? They have a strict no refund policy which is their prerogative but it doesn't help their image, not when they sell over-priced junk. I'll admit that it is convenient to find items at their store that you won't find at any other electronics store but they're still over-priced when you think about it. I spent $30 on a used power adapter that was defective from the get go, I returned it under warranty and the second one they gave me was dead within a month. Luckily, the third time was the charm but we'll see. Some of their employees are knowledgeable and some aren't, what gets me irritated is talking to some 20 something year old girl who doesn't know squat trying to sell me a computer, conjuring up crap she doesn't know as she goes along. It was clear that her knowledge only went as far as the stickered description on the front. I'm pretty much done with this place. I mean, the business idea is good but I just can't get past the prices and the deception, not when you compare them to other retail electronics stores. The service is great but you can definitely find better deals elsewhere. The store is convenient but pricey. I have since started to patronize Discount and I have been very happy with their attentiveness, quality of products and prices. These guys and gals are super inexpensive and quick. They have installed several gigs of memory in both of my laptops and when I had a problem with my desktop not going on line, they fixed it quickly even though they did not build that machine. Limited Warrantee...Buyer Beware. I bought several lightening cords for my iphone 5. Some worked, some didn't. Check them out before you leave the store. The ones that did work only worked for 8 months and then ceased to work. My loss. Discount Electronics only warrantees for 90 days. Now I have to buy again to get a cord that WILL work for more than 90 days. :( read more

I needed a new LCD monitor after my Samsung crapped out. Since I never had one that lasted longer then 5 years, I didn't feel like paying $300 again, so decided to try a re-furb from Discount Electronics. I figure even if theirs only lasts a year, it's still cheaper than a new one. I picked out a Dell 19" for $59. When I got home and plugged it in, I noticed a few spots of dead pixels. I put it in the test mode, and saw quite a few more. So, first rule on getting a monitor from them is to test it at the store. To their credit, when I took it back the next day, they exchanged it with no hassel. We tested the replacement, and it had no dead spots. It's been running a week now and looks fine. Glad their store is close, because if I had mail ordered it, it would have been a major pain to get an exchange. read more

I tell you what, I am glad we have this business here, but I rarely find a use for it. The place is stocked full with older desktops and laptops and monitors. All these items are priced lower than what they were originally worth. I am sure DE has done their share of work on them to bring them back up to spec. However, there is nothing here that you cannot go out to on a weekend at Fry's or Best Buy and get a value Toshiba, Samsung, HP, Dell or Gateway for the same or just a slight bit more and get better specs and a newer OS. There is one thing that the Matt the Manager has brought up to me that they do sell (even though used) Latitudes and Optiplexes. These are the business lines and they are extremely reliable. Not to mention, they offer service on the machine you bought from them. I can tell you if I ever buy another desktop rather than build one, it will be a Dell Precision, which is the top tier of Dell's business systems. They are actually workstations. I do not believe DE sells these. I can say that I can vouch for the quality of Latitude and Optiplex as I did support them at Dell. I find the small things here are the only reason I go. Ethernet cables, USB cables, keyboards and mice, etc. All these items are well priced. They are a part of Austin and they have good prices on those small items that I don't want to pay more for. read more

I am so very happy with Discount Electronics! I have had a Lenovo computer that I bought somewhere else, running Windows 8.1 and so impossible to use, with all the pop-ups and malware problems, that I almost threw it through the patio door last week. I was in the middle of a job but it was impossible to go online to do research. I could not even get to a site to buy some kind of malware blocker! Finally I was so frustrated that I started randomly uninstalling programs that I thought might be the problem. And of course, when I cooled down and checked things out, I was no longer bothered by all the bad stuff--and I couldn't get on the Internet. At all. I took my computer in to Discount Electronics on the advice of a friend who had had similar problems. I am SO glad I did. Lauren spent 1-1/4 hours with me, reinstalling what I had messed up, activating my Kaspersky account, and showing me how to use Malware Bytes to clean everything up and make the machine behave better than it ever did for me before. What a pleasant experience! She explained things clearly, took care of several other people while we were waiting for stuff to download, and was a model of the perfect customer service person. And at the end of that 75 minutes, when I pulled out my credit card and asked what I owed her, she waved the card away. Nope, she said, happy to help and come back any time. One of the screws fell out of my son's gaming laptop (Dell) and it was coming apart. I tried another screw and stripped out the hole and the screw, so it was totally coming apart. This store is the worst example of what buying on the internet should be. They advertise that their products are refurbished, and that is an outright lie.There products are used, and sometimes not even checked that they work! I ordered a Dell power supply, and paid to have it have it priority mailed to me. When it arrived it was scratched and did not work out of the box. I immediately called them and advised them of their non-functioning product. I told them that my business computer was down, and I needed an immediate replacement. I was told that they could not send me a new one until I filled out a RMA request form, they would review it and then e-mail me a RMA. I was told that after they received the power supply they would evaluate it, and only then could send me a replacement. I advised their customer service rep that I could not wait the week that he said it could take, and that I needed to get one locally as I needed to get my business computer operational. He told me that I was free to do that, and if the returned power supply was defective, that only then would I get "Credit"! Stupid me assumed that as I had charged it on my Visa card, credit meant back to my Visa account, as every other on-line vendor does! This is a normal policy, when company ships a defective product. When they received the defective product back in Texas, they sent me an e-mail saying that indeed it was defective, and they would give me store credit only. I advised them that this was unacceptable! Although I can understand such a policy for warranty, when a product that one orders is as advertised, and work on arrival, but then fails during the warranty period. However, for something that does not work out of the box, from a copy company that sells other product I do not need, a credit back to my account is the only acceptable solution! I am still waiting for the credit back to my Visa account, and have filed a complaint with both the Texas Better Business Bureau and my credit card bank. My advise is to save yourself the aggravation of dealing with this company, as there are hundred of other reputable computer parts vendors you can buy from! read more

I bought a computer online from Discount Electronics. When it arrived, it wouldn't boot up. It seemed the S-ATA cable had slipped off during shipping. So I took it in to the store and Kim helped me. I described the issue and she tried to start it up and saw the same problem. After a few minutes, Kim got a replacement tower for me. We started up that one and went through some setup options. I was probably in the store less than 20 minutes. I now have a computer that runs perfectly and does everything I need for a great price ($140 with tax). If I had bought new online from one of the other guys, it would have cost a lot more and I'd still get crappy service.
