The homestead started with a few chickens and it has exploded into an enviable way of life many of us could only wish for. After the chicks she bought a freeze dryer that runs 24/7 - she cans many of her own foods - she's making her own soap, among other things. Her most recent endeavor has been perfecting sour dough bread and today I was the lucky recipient of a lovely, crusty boule. Through recent events, such as medical, deaths and life in general I had stopped making sour dough so I contacted Shell to get a new starter. She very kindly gifted me the starter and a loaf. The starter had a nice hooch on top and a reminiscent scent that I couldn't wait to stir it in and feed it, then left it on the counter. Then I turned to the bread. It had a slight heft to it and I was afraid it might be a bit dense. My husband sliced the loaf in half and spread out the open centers for a photo. The halves pressed together easily and there was a nice crumb texture. I would have preferred more air pockets running through, however, the taste was not affected. It was moist with a chewy crust. We are half the loaf with some olive oil. As someone who used to make breads every single dough day I know that it takes a little time to get a feel for when it's right and that that feeling can change from day to day depending on the weather. And each particular type of bread is different from another. I applaud Shell for her efforts. She is well on her way to becoming a sour dough whirlwind in the area. Watch for her roadside stand as the weather warms up and treat yourself to some farm fresh eggs and other goodies.

We went around to the front window to place our order and he said it would be about 15-20 minutes. We sat out on the benches they have and waited. We figured he would signal us when it was done since no one else was there. We went back to the window and they had us wait another 3 minutes I'm assuming they were making the shakes. The food was ice cold! Cheese was not melted, hashbrowns were old and overcooked, and the chicken is extremely salty and over seasoned. I went back and told them my food was cold. He said " well you guys were gone for a while" as if we had left. We were sitting right near the back door you were smoking your cigarette at. However he did offer to remake it and that shit was still cold! I might return for a shake but not really because I can make the same one at home, nothing to phone home about. My brother got the cookies and cream shake and he said the Oreos tasted old. I got the butter pecan and I expected to taste pecans but did not. Sorry but this not it!
