I somehow managed to tear the shoulder area of one of my favorite suit coats.(See the photos.) Tears on shoulders are tough to fix since it's not a flat surface. Luckily a local dry cleaner suggested I try Valley Custom Tailor -- across the street from Valley Fair. I'm glad I did. Dina quoted me $130 and about a week to repair. The repair process is called reweaving. They take cloth from the hemline of the pants and use it to replace the damaged area. They essentially have to weave back in every strand. The result is nearly flawless. In my case, you can notice the work if you look really closely since my jacket has faded slightly as compared to the pristine fabric on the inside of the pant leg. As Dina said, I'm good to go now for another 5 years. I still don't know how the rip happened though.

My custom wedding dress made by Valley Custom Tailor.

Irina made my custom wedding dress from a pattern and fabric that I provided. At my request, she used the two-step process, where a model of the garment is made from inexpensive muslin fabric, and then altered on the person. The muslin was beautifully made, and, to my eye, fit me like a glove. Irina took one look at it and made small changes that made it even better. She is a master of fit. In order to get the dress I wanted, she took the pattern and re-designed it to better fit my expectations. This included adding boning and a crinoline, which are not particularly easy things to do. Due to the stress of planning a wedding, I started to lose weight. The dress had to be completely re-fitted, but this was not a problem for Irina. She was able to do re-fit a boned bodice and did a beautiful job. In addition, the fabric I chose was a white silk satin, which famously shows pin marks and lines. She somehow re-fit this dress without a single pin mark on the bodice. I am the graddaughter of a tailor, so I am both familiar with the process of making custom clothing, and have very high standards for fit and construction. Irina and her employees impressed me immensely. I have since taken my husband's suits to her to be altered, and the alteration work is just as high quality.

Tear (2) is on front of the shirt and clearly visible.

I've brought in plenty of pants for tapering, shortening, taking in the waist, etc. Last winter I brought in pants that were off the rack and a little long with a 32 length. As usual, I tried them on with shoes and Kim helped measured the length to shorten and I picked them up a week later. Super quick process. I didn't try them on at pickup since I had a lot of work done by her previously so I had no reason to doubt her work. Unfortunately I went 3 months without wearing them but when I did, they were still far too long so I had to bring them in again. I explained the situation and when she examined the pants, she told me it was still the factory stitching so there wasn't any work done by her or any other tailor. I was surprised by that, and that she didn't recognize her own work. I assured her I brought them in just a few months prior. When she remeasured the length, she marked to pants to shorten another 1 1/8 in. She said that she always cuts the length requested by customers and so it was my fault and had to pay again for work on the pants. I have all my pants around 29 inseam so this obviously was not accurate and rather annoying she tried to blame me for the incorrect length since she was the one who previously measured. I needed them done so I went ahead. I didn't want to leave a review about this but the following experience was embarrassing and needed to share. I recommended her shop to a friend who needed to shorten the length of 2 curtains but had a horrible experience. At pickup, Kim casually mentioned that 1 of the curtains were already damaged at drop-off and that she decided to do a free patching for the damage. My friend was not notified of any damage prior to pickup, and furious there wasn't any sort of communication. She couldn't even return the "already damaged" curtains because of Kim's unilateral decision to patch the hole. I felt responsible so I sent my friend $600 to cover the cost of curtains. If there was truly damage already, why wouldn't you inform the customer first to decide options?! This used to be my go to tailor but it's now on my blacklist.
