Good Dim Sum. I was happy when I saw their Grand Opening ad on the front page of The Salinas Californian. Everyone is very pleasant and the Dim Sum is pretty good. The Steamed Pork Buns (cha shao bao, 叉燒包) were a little too sweet for my taste. The Dim Sum at Dynasty Court is also very good and is more reasonably priced. However, their offerings are limited compared to this establishment. In Salinas, this is the only place you can get something less appealing to the general public, but absolutely essential to the Dim Sum lover, such as Chicken Feet (chizhi feng zhao, 豉汁鳳爪). Wasn't sure what to expect at a dim sum restaurant in Salinas but this was a pleasant surprise. The restaurant is very clean and attractive; the service was very good. The menu is somewhat limited with about 40 choices but they have most of the dim sum standards such as shu mai, cha su bao, ha gow, rice noodle rolls and sesame balls. The portions are very generous. Not surprisingly, there are no carts; you order from the menu. That can be a plus or a minus I suppose. The dim sum isn't great but is quite good particularly if you aren't in the mood to drive up to San Jose for a visit to the dim sum palaces there. read more

We came to Salinas to participate in the Salinas Valley Half Marathon. Since we already had Mexican food for lunch, we were looking for an Asian restaurant for dinner. We found Dim Sum Inn through Yelp, and we are glad we did. The service was excellent. Our order was taken promptly. The servers were attentive, refilling our water as needed. We ordered pork steamed buns, shu mai, the chicken and taro dumplings, egg paste mochi, roast duck, Chinese broccoli, and a side of brown rice. The servings were staggered perfectly, like eating a 3-course meal (appetizers, main course, dessert). We started with the steamed buns, shu mai, and chicken-taro dumplings (which we'd never had before and which we really enjoyed). Then we had the rice, duck, and Chinese broccoli. Last we had the mochi for dessert. Everything was delicious, down to the brown rice that was cooked just right. I think we'll have to sign up for the half marathon again next year just to have a reason to come back. read more

I've had way better Chinese food. Too much oil in my black bean and not much lemongrass in the 'lemongrass' lunch special. A bit pricey for dimsum. But it's the law of supply and demand. There's not much in that area, so it's okay if you're just passing through this town and need your Chinese food fix for the day. read more

Sam runs the eagle Chinese restaurant also. They are the best Chinese in town and now he also runs this place. Really good dim sum, reasonable prices, and a nice clean dining area. This is a great new addition to the Salinas dining experience. read more

Our go to spot for Chinese food in Monterey county. Never disappoints, always fresh, not greasy like most Chinese restaurants. Mongolian Beef, egg foo young, BBQ pork and sizzling rice are our favorites but it's all good. A little overpriced for the dim sum, but the next best dim sum is in the Bay Area. read more

What a great find! Dim Sum Inn was excellent! A terrific variety of very tasty dishes, quick and pleasant service and a nice atmosphere. The stuffed eggplant was fabulous, as were the chicken wings and shrimp dumplings, and the fried rice off the regular menu was top notch. Lots of chicken and veggies. The restaurant looks nicer than what it appears outside and the food was great, I ordered Mongolian Pork. However I didn't give it a complete 5 because the restaurant is running under staff. As I came in , no one was at the front and waited for 4 minutes to be greeted . They need to have a designated person up front managing the place specially on the weekend . the staff seem nice and a hard worker but it was hard to get attention for help because He was the: Greeter, Receptionist , Waiter, server and the busboy for the whole restaurant. The place has Quality food but not quality service not because he was a bad worker it's because it's under staff . read more

I wanted to try their dim sum menu (little plates of food). I liked their chicken dumplings. The fried rice was good but very expensive. I didn't care too much for the stuffed eggplant with shrimp and pork, even though I like the eggplant a lot and the rice noodle roll. It tasted like eating lots of flours and not a lot of meat. Just know that even though all the little plates are small, the bill will add up. Overall, I thought the food was okay. Wow ! Just discovered this gem across from Northgate mall. I grew up eating authentic Chinese dim sum and until now, have not found anywhere in the Monterey peninsula that could satisfy my cravings. Search no more! Dim Sum Inn has great food - every dish was delish. Staff were genuinely friendly and made you feel welcome the moment you stepped in the door. Because it's the sister to our favorite Eagle, it can't help but also be the same delicious food and great service. Sam is his usual fabulous host and I am amazed how he is able to greet his many customers by name. I've given them several tries and I will say they are consistent. The Dim Sum menu is so-so as far as variety, and grossly overpriced. They actually charge for tea, which a real dim sum restaurant (South Bay to entire Bay Area) would never ever do. I haven't ordered their non-dim sum food because I do eat at their Eagle Restaurant and which I think is a good place. Overall disappointing. read more

Went back for dinner with the family, so we had much more selection. We ordered around 10 different dishes. It was wonderful. Freshly made. So many pseudo dim sum places have either frozen or imported dim sum because it takes money to bring in specialized labor to make it. It takes courage to set up a more authentic Chinese place in the Monterey Bay, especially on the Salinas side. I hope and pray they open something on the Monterey side, but for now, it's worth the long trip. The shrimp har gow was plentiful and beautifully cooked. In fact all servings were generous and fresh. Traditional duck served with rice cake buns, scallions and cucumber, and plum sauce we very good. Even the bok choy was perfectly cooked and ample. Yes, it's pricier than what you'd find in the Bay Area, but what you save in gas and driving time is totally worth it. Please support great food in Monterey County and visit this place! read more

first of all, came here when there was minimal activity. there was only 1 other table, and even so the service here was unacceptable. waiters dont know what they're doing and i jst had a latino try to explain to me how to eat chinese food (i am chinese) without taking my order. he then proceeds to walk away for 10 minutes. food took 20+ minutes to arrive (which wasnt too much of an issue) and was a passable imitation of dim sum. the tofu rolls had weird ingredients in it like celery, and the lotus leaf chicken was a bit undercooked and bland. not in a hurry to come back anytime soon... read more

the food was actually very good. nice selection of items. double check on the availability of items. the reason only 3 stars was because the owner came out after we disputed what was on our bill and basically said we didn't want to pay for dishes. we ordered a dish that never came out and then was told they didn't have it, but it ended up on our bill. our friends had a similar issue. we don't mind paying for what we ordered but will not pay for something never received or ordered. again, the food was actually pretty good just look over your bill. read more
