I knew about this place since I pass by it every other day and know that it's got some close connections to the Eagle restaurant, but never stopped by until recently. I checked the menus and everything sounded amazing, but the one thing that made me stop there immediately was the fact they made sesame balls- incredible ones at that! A great place for Dim Sum in Salinas. My son and his wife live in Salinas and this is their favorite Chinese restaurant. They have a large selection of Dim Sum, cooked to order. When my son and his wife were married a few months ago, they wanted the food catered by the Dim Sum Inn, which delivered delicious food right to the venue. On a recent visit several days ago, we ate lunch here and had a delicious assortment of Dim Sum. Everything was great on this visit, except for one dish: eggplant dim sum. My son said that is tasted nothing like on previous occasions and definitely was not as good as the rest of the dim sum dishes we ordered. read more

My go to restaurant when I crave Asian food. Everything was good or superb. They take pride in their craft here and it shows. I never even knew this place existed until I was searching through Yelp trying to find good Chinese food. I ordered to go and it took 30 minutes for it to be ready, understandable because I seen they had people inside and other people waiting for take out as well. The chow mein could use a little more love, didn't have enough flavor for me. The orange chicken was a little odd having the sauce on the side, the sauce is very runny and the chicken itself was kind of sour too, I didn't like that. The sticky rice in lotus leaf with chicken was great but I think next time I'll order it without the chicken, they also put mushrooms and other random things in there, I feel like it would be better without it. The fried rice is amazing and so are the chicken dumplings, the sesame seed ball is what made me fall in love, I've never tried them before but I've seen them online and have been dying to try. It tasted exactly like I thought, so soft and chewy and the red bean paste on the inside goes perfect with it. I love it, I only live five minutes away from this place I don't know why I haven't been back yet but trust me, I will return to try more items on the menu. The quality of the dim sum keeps on getting better. It's now so good, that we no longer make the trip up to San Jose to get our dim sum fix. The menu of dim sum has doubled since the restaurant first opened. It still doesn't have several of my favorites such as gao choi bang (pan fried shrimp and spinach dumpling wrapped in a rice noodle), scallop dumpling (dried scallop version of har gow), and fun gor (steamed rice noodle stuffed with pork, peanuts, brown sauce, spinach, and water chestnuts). Yes, the prices are higher than some places, but the quality of the food is excellent and often, the portions are larger. I'm getting impatient with the tired old trope that Chinese food, or Mexican food, or food in Salinas should be cheap. What's up with that racist nonsense? The restaurant is spotless with lovely synthetic stone topped tables. Therefore, the restaurant can be cold. Bundle up, and don't order all of your dim sum at once because it will come all at the same time and get cold before you can finish. Sometimes the service can be really spotty, though the female servers are excellent. If the service was more consistent, the Dim Sum Inn would earn five stars. Great dim sum makes this place a favorite of mine! read more

Came here because I saw shumai on the menu(the wife a I have developed an addiction). The shumai were excellent. Definitely satisfied our craving. The BBQ pork was flavorful, could have more of a char for my taste. The chicken wings had a great crisp crust and the chicken was tender and juicy. First time having seafood soup. The broth was flavorful, fish balls were delicious I wish the bokchoy was cut smaller due to the size of the bowl. Can't wait until we're in the area again to come back. read more

For the most part this place was good, but very slow. In this case slow was not a bad thing as I think that the food was fresh. We had an assortment of dishes (there were 4 of us eating). Some dishes were better than others. The turnip cake needed more fillings in it. The pan-fried onion pancakes were good but were so oily, The chicken shu mai was adequate. We also had the shrimp dumpling soup, coffee spare ribs,crispy onion cake rice noodle roll (which aren't crispy), pork rice noodle roll and tofu skin roll with pork. For the most part I would get any of these again. They do have more items that I would like to try. The restaurant looks nice. The staff were friendly enough but we didn't see much of them. Real gem in the Monterey-Salinas area. Probably the only dim sum source within 75 miles. Most importantly a lot of the items are not run-of-the-mill, but rather unique or seldom seen. The chicken taro dumpling and onion buns are unique, and the chicken cheung fun, chicken siu mai, and chicken shen jen bao are nearly so. And while baked bbq pork buns are found everywhere, Dim Sum Inn's version is unique in appearance. The tab of $5.50 per order probably makes this the priciest dim sum in the US (who would have thought Salinas would hold that distinction) but I won't complain. read more

It is a quirky place---not a noisy crowded dim sum restaurant, but a somewhat empty place with rectangular tables and booths and a skeleton serving staff. The food is good. It seems that everything is made to order, so it takes quite a while for the food to be served, but it is hot when it hits the table. The shrimp and dumpling soup is good, simple and flavorful with fresh baby bok choy. We had the sweet and tender coffee spare ribs, chicken siu mai, tofu skin stuffed with pork, turnip cake, rice noodle rolls with barbecue pork, chive shrimp dumplings, pan-fried onion cake, and chrysanthemum tea. Everything except the turnip cake was quite good. The bill with tip came to less than $20 a person and it was a lot of food. Wonderful to find good quality dim sum in Salinas. We usually love this place. We ordered dishes we usually order. The food quality and taste was not good at all. Our lemongrass chicken was so salty we could not even eat it. The chow mien did not have vegetables like it normally did. Our fried rice was lacking flavor and didn't seem like it had been fried at all it was like they just poured oil on it and called it fried. Really greasy. Very disappointing. We usually take family there but I don't think we will be returning. read more

Alisal) I knew Dim Sum Inn was going to be good with the same owners at the helm. It's bright, spacious and super clean. The menu has many Dim Sum favorites and just about everything Eagle has too. Try the Shanghai style pork dumplings! If you like lamb at all (I'm a lamb addict), their Mongolian lamb is a must. Prices are reasonable. Service was attentive and thorough. Definitely the best dim sum in Salinas. The five different dim sum we ordered were fresh and tasty. Stuffed eggplant with shrimp, steamed chicken buns, baked pork buns, delicious sticky rice and shrimp won tons. We also ordered the spicy Dan Dan noodle soup which was just OK. The portions are big for dim sum which causes the first problem, they come out hot like there supposed to. By the time you get to your last bites there cold. The second problem is about the first problem, you order all the dim sum at one time which means you get it all at one time. So unless you one bite every thing it's cold...think McDonald's fries. In a full on dim sum restaurant carts with selected ones are takin around the restaurant and you choose the ones you want to try, there smaller portions and cheaper, oh and there hot. Alright, some more good things, there clean, there big, the service is fast and polite. They have a few well placed TV'S that aren't to intrusive. Bottom line for me is that I don't have to drive 2 and a half-hours to San Francisco's China Town for a dim sum fix. So considering the gas and time... I'm in. read more

One of my favorite Chinese food spots. My boyfriend and I have tried various items on their menu and have not been disappointed. Dan Dan noodle soup is great when you're wanting something to warm you up. Very filling. They're portions are super generous and they don't skimp on the proteins. If you get a dish with shrimp, you actually get a good portion of shrimp, unlike other places where you get a shrimp. Great customer service.
