GOOD DIM SUM AT AN AFFORDABLE PRICE I've been going to this place for over 15 years, and I still like it for its value and convenience, where you can get tasty dim sum without the lines (if you go early enough). I very much appreciated that this business was open during the pandemic. Some of their dim sum is very good (e.g., egg rolls, potstickers, turnip cake), but others are a little mediocre. I've never had their main Chinese dishes, so I can't comment on that. I do recommend bringing your own hot sauce and mustard if you plan on eating in the car or nearby at a park. The business is a very indescript shack on Garfield Ave. in the heart of Monterey Park, but it's still a go-to when I'm craving dim sum in a hurry. Today was our second time trying this place. I never got around writing a review the first time but here I am. To start off with the food here is really cheap & I love the quality of food & service they provide. When we got home we noticed a few items were missing . When we went back to let them know they right away corrected their mistake & gave us some freebies which we appreciated. So I recommend double checking your items are all there before you leave as they always have a high volume of customers. I ordered the steam Har Gow (shrimp) which was really good & had a lot of shrimp. I also ordered Shrimp & broccoli which was pretty good but also oily which I'm not a fan of but that's to be expected. The Egg rolls were delicious but not a crispy crunch as I would of liked. The pineapple bun was my absolute favorite. It was not overwhelming sweet but really creamy. My hubby ordered the BBQ pork bun which was savory & sweet. The pop stickers were juicy & crispy , the Sui Mai was juicy & full of flavor. The only downside to this place is that they only accept cash atm. Im not sure why this shop has a lower score then expected on yelp they have a A rating. First i want to point out that this is take out and cash only it is simple and humble and if you are coming in expecting something different then there are other dim sum places for you. They have reasonable pricing. All the dumplings are priced by piece and on the larger side. Service was very easy they have a little sheet that you fill out at the walk up window. My first time was today and ill be back literally tomorrow. This round we order steamed pork and steamed Chicken Bun and pork Shu Mia all around really good especially the chicken bun. The steam pork bun had a little to much cinnamon in it id say go for the chicken bun over the pork. The shu mia were really good and pretty large which i liked id say about two full bites worth. The only negative i have is they are super stingy with the hot sauce and no vinegar which was fine since i was taking it home anyway. I go here to get my quick dim sum fix to take home. The menu is very limited but we enjoy the chicken and bbq pork steamed buns the most. Just remember to bring cash and expect to stand outside for a while if it's busy. There is service to take your order and calling your number for pickup at the window but that's it. And service was slow.. but what I'm more disappointed in is this is my first time here and they already messed up my order. They never gave me my H.S.Gok. I paid for it and never got it. And we live 30 min away so there's no going back there to get a Refund. No complaints over flavor or price -- I go out of my way when I'm in the area to enjoy this take-away gem. No, my only issue is being understood when I place my order over the phone, as calling ahead is the smart move here -- and since I don't speak enough of the proper dialect, upon arriving I find they've made 7 of the items of which I only requested (or so I believed) one. So I have learned to double check whatever the bill comes to just to confirm what they say I ordered comes close to my actual intentions. Cheap, order-and-go dim sum in Monterey Park. Their menu items also included made-to-order stir fry dishes like fried rice and pan-fried noodles. Two of my favorites, the Har Gow (steamed shrimp dumpling) and Siu Mai (steamed pork dumping), were huge! And at $0.85 and $0.75 a piece respectively, I figured I was getting a great deal. Then, I took my bites... The shrimp had almost no flavor and was a full notch below some of the average, inexpensive dim sum places in San Gabriel Valley. Lesser quality meat and seafood frozen for a long time loses its flavor and juiciness. The pork in the Siu Mai, while it offered more taste, was dry and hard. Again, meat that probably was not of the best quality. The Sponge Cake, $0.85, came nice and warm. It was light and fluffy, not too sweet. Prepared just right in my book. But without some fruit or whipped topping, I felt it was rather plain and too dull to order alone as dessert. Not an item I'd order again. The Chicken Rice in Lotus Leaf, $1.65, also fell flat. Ironically, this menu item had too little meat. Disappointing because the glutinous rice was steaming hot and infused with the flavors of soy sauce and sherry, sesame oil and garlic. The Steamed BBQ Pork and Chicken Buns (Char Siu Bao), both $0.85, were just forgetful and probably the most disappointing items ordered. The filling was too sweet and also did not have enough meat. The best item on the menu that I tried was the House Special Udon, $5.69. It is a stir-fried noodle dish with udon, chicken, Chinese sausages and a soy sauce based, chili seasoning with some "kick" to it. It was tasty and enough to serve up to three people. The dim sum was mediocre at best. The stir fried noodle dishes are a better bet. My experience here made me homesick for some of the inexpensive dim sum gems in San Francisco from years past. In actuality and to be fair, the food up there was probably not nearly as good as I remembered either. Not very good dim sum and poor quality ingredients. If you are bent on finding cheap dim sum, saving money and loading on these steamed delicacies or just opting for the stir fried noodles, well then that's a different story. There are a couple of tables around the perimeter of the building but other than that there is no dining area. Having been there before I knew what to expect and had planned to take my order to go. They are cash only so be sure to stop at the atm on your way. Today my friend and I ordered the combination platter (two each: BBQ Pork Puff, Shrimp Har Gow, Pork Siu Mai, Hom Suey Gok, Egg Rolls, and Custard Tarts). At $7.50 it's a great deal. Of course I always have to get a few extra Har Gow ($.85 each). They are so amazing that I can't stop myself from eating a couple as soon as I get into the car. She can live on these and I love them too! Shu mai. Meaty tasty great dish. Radish cake, not the best I have had but still very tasty and I routinely order a couple. Sticky rice excellent, the whole family loves them (except my har gao loving daughter! lol). Egg rolls Standard fare that the kids love. Custard tart more standard fare the kids love Pot stickers, small but tasty Fried won tons, probably my least favorite dish since after fried, they are small but are crunchy! Cha Siu bao, a bit doughy but the kids love 'em anyway so who is to complain?!? Fried rice usually order shrimp but last time yang chow, all very delicious. Broccoli and beef also very delicious. I have been a normal customer for many years, the food has always been good. But recently the service and mannerisms have been declining in satisfaction. We drive 30-50 minutes from Orange County and for Mother's Day we realize that it is a busy day and we phone ordered the day before. But the staff there just became less concerned with customer service. When we arrived, our order was there waiting for us and they still made us wait another 50 minutes in line to pay for our now VERY cold food. Rudeness, disorganized and for phone orders just come to the window then rudely told to go back in line. This is no longer worth the trip. It's time to start looking for something comparable closer to home. Not worth going out of our way. Yes, it's convenient to buy dim sum here and not have to wait for hours for a table in a restaurant. However, the trade-off is the quality here. You're also not paying less for most dishes. To order, you grab the order sheet at the counter and pen in your choices. Remember that the listing is for ONE of the item listed and not a dish of it (which typically consists of (3-4) like at a restaurant. A siumai was $1.10 for one. You can get it for under $3 for a plate of three at a restaurant. The food is mostly fresh but the taste is not the best. The shrimp hargou had this 1/4" skin that was so wet and doughy. Not good at all. Some of the items were refried and charred. If you're into take-out dim sum, I think Happy Family on Valley is a better choice. read more

I LOVE THIS PLACE, even though there isn't a place to sit inside (it's an outside shop like a Wienersnizel if you've ever been there) So you order at a window outside and they have pictures for those that might not know what you are ordering. They have a menu slip and you would just put down the quantity that you want of each item and they ring it up for you. I think the food is pretty reasonably priced & the food is good!! TIP: CASH ONLY and bring your own pen if there's a line. This is a Monterey Park staple! If you don't want the hassle of going to NBC for dim sum, then Dim Sum Express is definitely for you. It can get a little on the expensive side, but their food is just as good. There's usually a little menu that you have to grab at the ordering window so that way you can mark off what you would like to eat. I suggest bringing your pen because I'm pretty sure they don't sanitize the pens that they have out. At one point, I shared my pen with three other strangers because there weren't enough to go around (I doused it with hand sanitizer for all three of us). I typically order the shu mai, har gow, and the hom suey gok! The shu mai is standard, but the har gows are pretty big, and the hom suey goks are ALWAYS so crispy. It can definitely get on the oilier side though, so make sure you have napkins at hand! One order of each comes with three items, I believe. I also recommend getting the chow mein or fried rice because it's pretty good here as well! Parking is a bit of a bitch, so I would suggest parking on the street. The wait can be a while so I would suggest going to your car and waiting there for about 15 minutes if it's super busy. My favorite items from this place is the shrimp Har Gow. If you dont like the taste of white pepper, you may not not like this as it is pretty heavy. My ultimate favorite item is the Hom sui gok. Decided to give this old joint another shot. I used to frequent this place 2010-2013 and then maybe 2x a year after. The business is THRIVING under covid because takeout is their business. The prices reflect the change etc and when you don't feel like waiting in line or getting in early at restaurants, this may seem the likely place (perhaps even only place to for quick dimsum fix). However, I am convinced now that the quality of food just doesn't do it. The well known items should be good given that their menu remains same. Porkchop with rice is now $10 with hella fat and skin - rice is just old cold rice used for fried rice. Glutinous rice balls are deep fried - flash fry too hot leaving contents inside undercooked. Forgetting to glaze Baked bbq buns so it's sand paper dry. And try asking for hot sauce or soy sauce - they yell at you. Even if you spend a good $60-$100 , you get 1 or 2 and don't you dare ask for another. The two ladies always angry and intense. Just go down to Elite or MamaLu or somewhere else. Skip. If you are in DIRE need of it, sure. Otherwise, make the better effort of dining and skip this place. This is one of the very few places (this and Yum Cha Cafe) that still sells dim sum past lunch time in the 626 (San Gabriel Valley) area. No indoor seating, just 4 picnic tables sitting outside of the store. To order, you just simply write down what you want on the ordering form and give the form at the window. Not the cheapest dim sum in the area (e.g. $1 for one piece of siu mai here vs. $2~$3 for four pieces of siu mai at most other sit-down places), but quality of food you get here is pretty good. BBQ pork bun ($0.95) - Not too bad, but not amazing either (3.5/5). har gow and siu mai - A bit expensive, but each piece was pretty big. Both har gow and siu mai were yummy. (4/5) Egg tart - Took additional 10 minutes to prepare and it was warm and soft. Very good egg tart (4/5). Hom suey gok (glutinous rice, $0.95) - Crispy on the outside, mochi-texture-like in the inside. Interesting, but not a must order (3.5/5). Had to get my dim sum fix during the pandamit at about 9am and the line at Capital was long, so I went by Dim Sum Express and the line was short. Got har gow, baked pork bao, and shumai. They were tasty. I was impressed that I was handed my order in just the time it took them to pack it after I paid. Duh...it's named "express"! First time here, got here at 9:00a and had no wait. I was eating in 5 minutes of parking in their lot. I only had the Har Gaw, Shu Mai, and the baked Pork BBQ Bun. Good to very good for the Har Gaw and Shu Mai. Both were juicy and well seasoned. The Shu Mai was a bit peppery for me, but tasty non the less. Price is per piece, but still a great deal. The baked BBQ pork Bun is my favorite and I try it where ever I can find it. The version here is good, but I've had better. The filling is not as much and a little on the tangy side. I cannot wait to try the other dishes. No frills, clean location but get you in and out fast if you time it right. Service was good, not friendly, just efficient. I have always wonder about this place. Today I happened to swing by so I bought $25 worth of dim sum. At home, I finally discarded all the swei muy as they are deemed unedible. The taste is so odd and meat not fresh. The best is daikon cake, so moist and flavored with a lot of MSG. I got very thirsty after having their dim sum for dinner. Egg roll is meatless but the skin is too tough. The chicken pie has a very strange flavor. After checking the prices, har gow comes to $5 for 4 huge pieces but I really missed NBC $5 ones. The chicken pie is nothing compared to Jimmy's bakery chicken pie. There is very limited choices here. So why do I waste my money and time (took 20 min) at this place? No more.
