Salt and spicy fried pork chop; egg and tomato with beef

Hong Kong style Chinese food at a great price. Love their complimentary pork bone soup with lotus root. More SGV Chinese restaurants need to bring their prices down to attract customers. We Chinese love a good bargain.

I need to start making notes on which salt and pepper pork chops I like. These were ok. Good quantity and less salty and less breading. A bit on the overcooked side though

Ah. I liked this place but I am teetering between 3.5 stars/4 stars mainly because of the cleanliness of this place. Interior is great, food is good, service is good but then I went to the restroom and oh boy... it was sooo dirty, I wanted to throw up. As I left the restroom, I peaked through the kitchen doors and it was also sooo dirty. It's better if I didn't see that because now I'm wondering how clean was the preparation of my food? Anyway, highlight of the meal was the tofu fish dish. We also got geoduck, salt pork ribs, Chinese broccoli, soup, and green beans. The veggies were good. Only complaint is the noodles under the lobster was pretty bland. Overall, not bad, just needs to work on the cleanliness.

Background On Visit: Drove past the restaurant countless of times and told myself that the next vacation day I get, I'll patronize the shop for their special lunch... and so I did. Credit Cards: Credit cards are accepted. Restrooms: Restrooms are available to be used. Visitation Rights: Twice for special lunch. Location/Parking: Located next to Baccali Cafe. Parking can be found in their designated parking lot. If you can't find parking there, you can find parking along Valley Blvd. or in residential streets nearby. Ambiance/Decor: Your typical chinese seafood restaurant feel with modern furnishings. Order Of Operations: 1) Go to the cashier and tell the staffer how people in your party. Depending on table availability, they'll give you a number and you'll have to wait until your number is called. 2) Proceed to the table, sit, decided what you want to eat, and order with your waiter. 3) Wait for the food come out and proceed to chow down. 4) Get the check, pay, and then proceed to your next destination. Service: Service was good. Staffers were friendly, attentive, and offered great suggestions. Food came out at a decent time. Please note that that the steamed tilapia will take longer to cook. Food Of Choice: I usually patronize the shop when special lunch is involved (11pm - 6pm). Special lunch includes free daily soup (pork with bittermelon), rice, and discounted dish items that start at $9.99 and up. I've had 4 items (eggplant, chinese broccoli, steamed tilapia, and braised pork belly) already. They were quite delicious and the meats were tender. The only complain was that there was a lot of fat on them. Restaurant For Thought: I wouldn't mind coming back to try other food items.

Food good. Service good. Ambiance good. However, don't look in the kitchen when walking to the restroom. Came here on Christmas Day with group of seven. It was my first time and the place was big with many tables and booths. The service was good and friendly. We ordered: - Chinese Green in Supreme Soup - Salt Pepper Pork Ribs - Salted w/ Tofu - Fried geoduck - Geoduck veggie mix - Lobster w/ garlic noodles My favorite was the salted chicken w/ tofu - perfect savory sauce on rice. The day was going great until the last moment. As I made my way to the restroom, which was not the greatest cleaning, kitchen is open to look when walking down the hallway. Lets just say I am on fence to go back here after seeing that kitchen. While most of us are not surprised since traditional asian restaurant, kitchen could still be better. Now I'm curious whats really salted in my favorite dish...

    Beef with Loofah

Looking for a place for dinner in the Monterey Park and Alhambra area, and took my hair stylist's recommendation to come to MJ Valley Restaurant. The parking lot is kinda small but we were lucky to get the last spot. On the door there's a sign saying that Steamed Tilapia was on special for $9.99 while supplies last. The two of us ordered a Beef with Loofah 勝瓜肥牛from the special menu on the wall, Pork Neck Meat with Chinese Green 菜心豬頸肉 from the $11.99 menu, and the Steamed Tilapia 清蒸魚。Everything was quite good and the Tilapia was surprisingly good sized for being $9.99. The Beef with Loofah was huge with a very generous amount of beef. The restaurant is rather spacious and bright. The decor is pleasant. They seem to offer a good variety of seafood also. Service was average but not as bad as in some of the reviews. I think MJ Valley is a decent restaurant with good value.

Unidentified black object (cooked bug?) checked and it's definitely not seasoning

TLDR: If you like stale, smelly food with unidentifiable objects in it, bad service and being lied to about your order, this is your place. Otherwise, avoid. If I could give 0 stars, I absolutely would. This was hands down the worst dining experience I've had in all 15 years of living in the SGV. I would not recommend this place to anyone. First off, the service was terrible. We came in for a quick, casual dinner on Easter Sunday and didn't order anything extravagant. There was a special going on, so we ordered the fried fish dish-- which I strongly do not recommend. It was somehow overwhelmingly salty while still being bland, and worst of all, it had a foul odor, like decaying meat. It was genuinely inedible. We politely asked the manager if anything could be done, and to our surprise, he admitted the dish had been reheated from the freezer. Then, in a condescending tone, he told us that if we wanted something "fresh," we should've ordered 石斑鱼 (grouper) which, for context, is one of the more expensive items on the menu. It very much felt like he was looking down on us by the tone of how he spoke to us for not ordering a premium dish, even though we were just asking to have an inedible item taken care of. To make things worse, they brought us the wrong dish. We ordered fried ribs but were served fried pork chops instead. Two servers checked our receipt, and it was obvious they realized the mistake, but chose not to fix it. When we asked the manager to confirm, he straight up told us it was the ribs, which was just not true. I would also like to add that 30 minutes after we ordered they notified us that they couldn't make one of the items we ordered, not a big deal but wish they mentioned it earlier. Though it was pretty frustrating that most of the things we planned to order they told us they were out of it. The cleanliness of the restaurant was also questionable. Midway through dinner, I realized I was sitting on stale grains of rice, there was a noticeable amount both under me and around the seat. There were also old food scraps under the table, and as we were leaving, I noticed trash and used napkins scattered across the floor. Most concerning, I found a small black object in my food that looked like a cooked bug. At that point, given how unhelpful the staff had already been, I didn't even bother bringing it up. I've seen people mention the prices being reasonable, but honestly, with this level of service and cleanliness, it's still not worth it. There are plenty of better options in the SGV where you'll get a better bang for your buck. Up to you, but we will not be returning, thanks!

    Tammy T.

Don't expect great service here because they'll most likely just ignore you unless if you're a regular customer (60 years old +). At least, they won't ever be sued for age discrimination. It took over 20 mins just for them to pass by my table to be told to wait, and another 10 mins for them to come back to take our order. We ordered two dishes (great prices, though) , but we got our fried fish after we were done with our two others. I don't plan on coming back as there are way too many other options out there with the same type of food and similar pricing for us to be treated like we were invisible. Not planning to come back.

This place is your typical Chinese attitude restaurant. They have a small parking lot which is fine if you go right when they open, even a half an hour later and it will be full. The food is decent with a decent price tag which is probably why it's so popular. Nothing is overly salty or too bland, everything has a balance. Meal comes with white rice and soup. The 1 star comes from their service and attitude. When we came in with a table of 4 right when they opened with only 2 other tables in the restaurant, our food took longer to come out than a table of 8 that came in after us. We ordered basic chow mein and fried rice with the tofu and salt and pepper calamari. The tofu and the salt and pepper calamari came out first and then we proceeded to watch other tables get their chow mein and fried rice before us. When asked what happened, they said "there's nothing we can do, there's hella people. Just wait." There wasn't many people when we walked in and we sat down and ordered first. When we asked for extra utensils because they only gave us 3 sets for 4 people, they said they're "too busy, go get it yourself." Super unsanitary. I don't know where other peoples hands have been. We decided to cancel one of our orders because it was taking too long and we had somewhere we needed to be, they refused to let us cancel the order and all of a sudden the food came out 2 seconds later. Soo... it was just sitting there? Maybe you were serving your friends first? We asked for take out boxes and again, "go get it yourself." Welp, yall don't get a tip since this is a self serve restaurant. Price might be fair but I'm good. I'm not coming back.

Amazing special lunch prices 7 days a week up until 6:00pm. The food tastes amazing, and they don't charge for rice, soup, and hot tea. Sometimes traditional Chinese food can feel really oily, but MJ Valley Restaurant does a great job at keeping the flavor without feeling too heavy/greasy. Definitely cannot be beat!

House lobster. Add Yee Mein for $8
    Lanny H.

Located at Valley and 2nd St, in the heart of Alhambra, we arrived at the tail end of the lunch rush just after 1 pm on a Saturday. It was no problem getting a table for 3, parking was a bit tight. The ambiance was bright and open, an improvement from the prior restaurant that occupied this space. The food was decent. We had the House lobster at $19.99 per pound, you can't beat the price. Also my first time trying the crispy salted pig feet. It was crunchy and tender, a bit rich but not overly greasy. The stir fried eggplant was also tasty. The meal came with complementary soup and rice. Service was quite lacking here. I am used to mediocre service from Chinese restaurants. But no one came by to take our order for a long time. We couldn't wave anyone down. We were still ignored when a staff stood 3 feet from us, getting takeout boxes for someone else. Is it so hard to acknowledge someone, a simple "I'll be with you in a moment."? Food did come out promptly. It was difficult getting our tea refilled and getting the check. We got our own takeout boxes. I went up to the cashier to pay my bill.

Lunch Specials!!! Beef chow fun, cod with black bean sauce, shrimp scrambled egg, salt and pepper squid, fried string beans

Lunch specials $9.99/10.99/11.99 Wow what a deal. Despite the low prices, the portions are not skimpy at all, as you can see in the photo. Taste-wise it's pretty legit Cantonese fare, with the beef chow fun being my favorite, cooked in a hot wok to perfection, flavorful and not at all greasy. Good luck finding parking if you come during lunch hour (11:30a-1:30p) $75 total for 5 dishes, a bucket of white rice and a giant bowl of house soup. FREE hot tea.

I came here with my family for early dinner. They have a super late lunch special that ends at 6pm. Anyone that comes for their lunch special gets complimentary steamed rice and some soup. The sad part is that they didn't have iced lemon tea like other Hong Kong style restaurants. There was plenty of parking spots in their lot, but there is also street parking if you can't find a spot to park at. Their food quality was good, but wasn't great. Service was fast and I think because we spoke Chinese, the staff felt more comfortable with us. I enjoyed the fried fish, but i wished their fish was a little more "steamed". The meat didn't quite fall apart well compared to a steamed fish. Their shrimp with egg was quite large for an Entree. A lot of their lunch specials were under $16 a plate! The women's restroom had 2 stalls. One for single and a wheelchair accessible one. The single felt extremely small and compact that if you're a plus size woman, you'd have a hard time using it. At least that's how I felt. When we got there, the ambiance was casual, but really quiet. We wouldn't mind coming back.

You have to pay for the drinks, but so far I haven't seem a limit on the refill (I typically refill only once though but I've also been able to take the drink togo). I would recommend getting the salt and pepper pork chop - my dad says this is literally better than most places we've gone to. I think they season the batter, which is how its so flavorful. We also typically get the eggplant, which comes in a huge plate and comes with rice. My dad likes their curry but I'm not super excited about it. Its good, but not exciting, if you know what I mean. Service is typically pretty good. They move around pretty quickly and food typically comes out pretty quickly too. I would spend about 50-60 dollars and its enough food to last two people maybe an additional 2 or 3 meals, especially since most dishes come with a dish of white rice. The rice isn't great, like it's kind of dry, but its free so no complaints here.

The last few times I've ordered the kung pao chicken, it barely had any veggies. It used to come with a mix of colorful bell peppers, but now it's mostly onions. The sweet and sour fish used to be lightly battered and nice and meaty. On my last visit, it was heavily battered and you could barely taste the fish. I'm not sure if they changed chefs, but the difference in quality is definitely noticeable. It's disappointing because I really like the staff. They're always friendly and provide great service. I'm hoping the food goes back to how it used to be.

I was back to this location for breakfast and found out it has a new breakfast menu…read more The menu is totally different from the old one and unfortunately offers fewer choices. No more beef, shrimp, Chinese donut, or BBQ pork rice rolls. The breakfast combination offers choices of congee, then a dime sum, and stir-fried soy sauce noodles. The Western style side offers a similar choice with sandwich, and macronni soup. And other choices. IMO, the missing of different rice rolls is a major set back. It also has a May special menu which I may try.

Their new breakfast special includes congee, a dim sum item, a side, and a drink. I do like that there are now more options for the breakfast sides. Unfortunately, the congee tastes different now. This used to be my favorite spot for pork and black egg congee, but my last order was watery and bland instead of thick and flavorful like before. I did enjoy the pork siumai and shrimp spring roll from the dim sum selection. I also tried the pineapple bun, but I expected it to be softer and more moist. The portion was also pretty small. I like that most of their drinks can be ordered unsweetened, but they only offer Sweet'N Low instead of Stevia or Splenda. I also recently tried the kung pao chicken and didn't enjoy it. The sauce didn't taste like traditional kung pao sauce, and the dish had very few vegetables and mostly onions. It's unfortunate because the food quality and flavor don't seem as good as they used to be.

So sad the one in temple city closed down! However, this one is still open!…read more We enjoyed seafood palace in las tunas and decided to come here to give it a try. First, parking was so difficult!! So many cars crammed close to each other and the restaurant wasn't even full, but we parked in the street nearby. The place had plenty of seating when we arrived, spacious tables that fit our group of 16. We had a large party and split into two tables, each table had peanuts and tea, we also ordered our own bit with the same serve at the same time. We ordered our usual dishes such as corn soup, honey walnut shrimp, salt and pepper squid, sal and pepper pork chops, filet beef dish, hainan chicken and many more. The service seemed slow, the bad part is that our other table got all their dishes while we had none. It took a while before our first dish arrived which was honey walnut shrimp, it was good, a bit soggy but flavorful. We asked for rice and started eating, once most of the shrimp was gone the rest of the dishes came. They were delicious, they tasted great and had good portions. The pork chop was great fresh but soon started to get tough as it cooled. The fried squid had parts that were very seasoned and some bland. My sister in law ordered a seafood tofu dish that was the best one but we ate everything before I took a photo. We also shared dishes across the tables to try out our orders. I tried the fried crab but it had more garlic than crab! The restroom was the sad part, there was no toilet paper, and no paper towels. The women's restroom door was propped wide open as well. I had to call my sister to bring in napkins for me... Overall a great meal, we may come back if the occasion allows.

Overall the food was solid but there were little things that we didn't like. My Indonesian fried rice was a bit too salty and the noodles didn't have enough satay flavor.

Additional parking spots are available in the underground garage. [Atmosphere]: Upon entry, our party could smell a lingering cigarette odor. Eventually, my nose got used to it. The overall ambiance is not quite as modern as other Hong Kong cafés like HK Macau Bistro in San Gabriel or Hong Kong Cafe in Atlantic Times Square. One TV was playing America's Funniest Home Videos while another one at the bar was showing a NBA game. [Menu]: Yelp's top highlighted items are Indo Fried Rice, Baked Pork Chop, Grilled Chicken Steak, and Beef Chow Fun. Our party actually did not order the correct chow fun on our first visit as it turned out to be a wet (aka saucy) chow fun. For the dry version, the correct order = Beef Chow Fun with Dark Soy Sauce. *** Indo Fried Rice ($13.75): S-tier flavor and definitely recommend this dish. Beef Chow Fun Black Bean Sauce ($16.20): It was basically a wet chow fun rather than a dry chow fun our party was expecting. The flavor was on point, but not as good as the dry version (aka dark soy sauce). Beef Chow Fun with Dark Soy Sauce ($16.20): This was the correct dry chow fun our party was looking for. Savory and delicious noodles, but tasted slightly greasy. Baked Pork Chop ($14.20): Very heavy on the tomato sauce with scrambled egg and cheese. The flavor profile was not bad at all. It had a solid portion and large enough to split into two smaller meals. *** A-tier or 4-star for the food especially Indo Fried Rice and Beef Chow Fun with Dark Soy Sauce (aka dry beef chow fun), but I had to bump down to 3-star due to the minor cigarette smell.
