It doesn't look like much from the outside but the food is great. Interesting license plate decor and a downhome diner feel. They have fresh kalbasa and stuffed cabbage, items not found at a lot of restaurants. Plus the pie is terrific! read more

Well...the food is decent, but not high on my list. First the price...my family of four including 2 children was $48!? I have had way better meals for less, way less and way better food for the same $$! Went this evening, and with my family and a friend. The waitress was not very helpful, and the meal I ordered "Baked Meatloaf"...she brought Roast Beef..something I hate...said we don't even have Baked Meatloaf..I replied it is on the menu..with a dumbfounded look..she said we are out of it. Just surprising to me...I guess. The baked steak was very dry..and the fried potatoes burnt...Our friend ordered a carrot cake, she said she was out of it..she returns a minute later with a slice of cake..which cost $5.89!!!!?? I think they need to look at pricing their menu differently, it is located in Nitro, not a big city. I am unsure why the prices are so high, and why people go there so often. Maybe it was a bad day..but we will return, just not any time soon. read more

This was not particularly good food. A mainstay of the community, yes. A great restaurant, no. We had chopped steak and onions, green beans, pinto beans, sage dressing, the tools, and cornbread. The cornbread was the best of the lot. One star for all the kitsch and one star for the food. The service was thud like. She was very busy. We won't go back again. read more

Diehl's food is very good authentic home cooking HOWEVER you WILL pay a price for it. Their 1/2 fried chicken dinner (which is Cornish game hen size) is now $17.99. That is ridiculous. Servers are allays excellent and the wait can be long but the food is very good. Just plan to pay more at Diehl's than any other home cooking place you visit. And if you want dessert...get there early! read more

Delicious home cooked food. Like the other reviews stated it is filled with racing-inspired-JR HOUSE PHOTOS-Cowboy/Western memorabillia but beyond the cheesey decor... you will find delicious food. I've tried a few items over the years, from the delicious Chicken Strip Salad to the Chicken Livers , but the one item that I always order (only ate the others due to this being sold out for the day) is the Roast Beef & Gravy (w/ mashed potatos , coleslaw and rolls!) Great little home town place to eat at if your near Charleston, West Virginia. Handled a group of 25 within ten minutes and the food came out hot and at the same time so everyone could eat at the same time. Waitresses were friendly and helpful with food suggestions. Atmosphere was great with memorabilia the owner has collected since 1960 when it opened. So stop and eat a good meal. My only complaint was how hard it was to get to. You have to get off the interstate and go through a bunch of side roads to get to it even though you can see it from the interstate. read more

Best Pie's in WV! Traditional WV home cooking in a family atmosphere. Their fried potatoes are beyond yummy. Pinto beans and cornbread are delish. The flounder sandwich is one of my personal favorites. The decor is full of the owner's collection of toys and hobbies. Let me start by saying this restaurant has a lot of charm, it's got a lot of locals who love it and a very big menu. In addition to their menu they have specials daily. I was a little confused by some of the crazy concoctions on their menu and even more shocked at the pricing. Most of their entrées were $15+ with the exception of a few sandwiches. All of their "steak" entrées were chopped steak (fancy lingo for ground sirloin). I ordered a salad with my meal and was completely shocked to get a plate full of shredded lettuce with huge sliced tomatoes and cucumbers laying on top. My food was okay at best, I felt that most of it had a tremendous overwhelming salty taste. The saving grace of this restaurant had to be the culture in the restaurant and the friendliness of the staff, but the most notable thing was their cake, they have DELECTABLE homemade desserts and honesty I wish that was all I had gotten. read more

We pretty much could have gone to a steakhouse for what we paid here. You should go once to get the old, West Virginia restaurant vibe. I have been eating there since about 2009 when I first moved to the Nitro area. The food has always been down home and amazing. The staff has always been very pleasant and welcoming. I would recommend anything and everything there. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Although, I would only say not to order any of their Pecan Pies because they are nasty and as a favor to the restaurant I will be eating them all, so don't even think about ordering Pecan pie when they are available. read more

I gave it a negative review in 2012. Since then I gave it another chance. I am now a fan again. The salad is really good. I have eaten there the past 3 days. I do have 1 complaint, and that is the fish. The breading and fish I would pass on. They need to come up with a better fish and breading. The customers that go here are the age group that would eat a lot of fish. lol. But I do have to agree with the other reviewers that their prices are a bit HIGH. I use to eat here as a kid in the summers for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Much hasn't changed and the food is still good as it was when Mrs Diehl's use to cook and run the restaurant. The food is always good and home made. I'm glad in my older year that Diehl's is still here. As a widower it's hard to cook for one person. The restaurants today always use fake frozen or instant. One of my favorites! Been going here for years and the food is consistently good! I see several posts about the price but I would rather pay a little more to support a local business! I have never ordered anything that I did not like but I will admit my go to meal is the roast beef and gravy. The rolls are amazing but the Texas Toast is an overlooked jewel! Visited family in WV at the beginning of September and made sure Diehl's was on my list. The family could not believe my boyfriend and I wanted Diehl's since it was such a locals kind of place - they wanted to take us out to more upscale restaurants but we wanted to get down and dirty with some southern food. My boyfriend had the roast beef and I ordered the pork chop - we couldn't forget about the iced tea either! Mashed potatoes, salad, the whole 9, everything was wonderful. We loved the family enviornment and the decor was spot on! Our table was a glass top over an engine! The walls are adorned with license plates and different styles of guns!!! You cannot go wrong! THE BEST CHICKEN HOAGIE EVER! One snowy day In January 2011, I stayed in Nitro, West Virginia and have eaten there many times at this family owned restaurant with race car flair and memorabilia. Every time I go, I order the J.R. House - Chicken Fajita Hoagie. But I call it the JayBird Chicken Hoagie because I add three slices yummy crisp bacon to the mix! It is awesome, it has deliciosly grilled chicken strips, grilled sweet onions, green peppers, lettuce and a secret sauce thats been passed down over the decades. I swear this is the best Hoagie I've ever eaten. For those that don't know J.R House, he's a local two sports star from Nitro High School that took the football team to the 1998 Football State Championship. He now plays baseball for the New York Mets Triple-A team, the Buffalo Bisons. If thats too much info, don't worry about it and just remember the Chicken Fajita Hoagie and add some bacon please! And if you're still hungry, this Cali. kid warns you to try the pies, OMG! (Oh my God, for those that don't know). Awesome local flavor! read more

Back in town for the day so we went to Diehl's for an early dinner. Already getting busy but we got seated without much of a wait. Waiter brought our menus and took our drink orders. I ordered unsweetened ice tea but what he brought tasted like sweetened. He brought another glass, it too was sweet. Apparently someone had poured sweet tea in the unsweetened dispenser! Substituted a Diet Pepsi which tasted off. I wondered if they had a water filter on their soda dispenser or if the syrup was simply bad. Ordered roast beef dinner with fries and green beans. LOTS of gravy but what roast beef there was had been cooked to literal shreds. Green beans were pretty good country style. Corn bread was tasty. Passed on desert after the carb fest but what shocked was the tab. Charged extra for the fries. Pricy for a mom n pop style country restaurant. Limited choices of course in Nitro so this place is as good as it gets. Do yourself a favor and take the time to drive up the interstate. read more

We had the privilege of eating here last night for a wedding rehearsal dinner. The baked steak with gravy and sage dressing and fried potatoes and cornbread were amazing! The sage dressing is deep fried and comes in what looks like a hockey puck. The waitresses were excellent and the decor was fun. The prices are a little steep and that is why we gave four stars. Almost $12 for my meal. While I was not paying as it was a wedding rehearsal dinner, the thought of regularly paying almost $55 dollars for a family of four for dinner is the reason we never frequented this establishment when we lived in Nitro for 4+ years! read more

No better home cooked food other than my Mom's kitchen when she was alive! Roast beef is the best and I've ordered it at every home cooking restaurant around here, and sadly, they are few and far between where you get REAL, fresh, made to order food.
