    Baked steak with fried potatoes
    Ian C.

I've been coming here for 10+ years, once a year when I'm in the area on a Friday night for their baked steak. This place is a hole-in-the-wall that has been there for over 60 years and has quite the following! Came in yesterday, and they said it was a new beef they were using which the waitresses thought was better. Couldn't really tell a difference, but it was great as always. Some say their mashed potatoes and rolls are instant/frozen, which i could be wrong on, but I'm pretty sure they aren't as they are always fresh, fluffy, and have great flavor. Every year when I'm in town, Diehl's will always be a dinner stop! If I had one complaint it is that when I asked for the fried potatoes, she asked if I wanted them crispy, and I said yes. They weren't really crispy or well done, but still super yummy. (Sode note: My meal with unsweetened tea was about $20, so not bad for the quality and quantity you get.)

I visited here with a few clients who work nearby and rave about this place. They say nearly everything is good and they make many things homemade including: select salad dressings, pies, cobbler, corn bread and rolls, and they even grind their own coffee beans. I chose the German style steak (a hamburger steak) since it comes with cheese and grilled veggies on top and a sweet tea. I chose pinto beans and green beans for my sides and dinner rolls. It was a little pricy as a lunch item, but I guess it is large (12oz), so that is factored into the price. As far as the overall quality, I felt the patty was pre-formed and purchased from a supplier, as opposed to being hand formed in house and made fresh. My colleague also ordered the hamburger steak, but chose one of the other ones on the menu, as they have about 3 or 4 different hamburger steaks to choose from. The green beans tasted canned and the pinto beans were not very flavorful and just bland. I just made a big bowl at home last week, so I know how these should taste. Maybe it's a northern recipe to not put any salt and fat into your beans? Who knows. The best part was easily the homemade dinner rolls. Of course since I had skipped dessert the previous evening, I tried their coconut cream pie which was pretty good I would say. Their service was alright, but I was left without a refill of my iced tea for a while. If you like old things, this place is for you as there are many things along the walls, ranging from comic books, toys, Nascar cars, cap guns, post cards, to name a few.

Our group of four stopped in for lunch on our way home from Kentucky back to Virginia. It was an easy stop off the highway. We were seated quickly and the wait staff was great. The food was delicious and came quickly. Very reasonably priced with large portions. The dessert were great as well and they had a very large assortment. I loved how the menu discussed the fact that everything is homemade and made with real ingredients. We would definitely stop in again.

My family grew up in Nitro and used to eat at this restaurant back in the 60s and 70s. I was recently on a road trip and drove through to see Nitro for myself and they told me I had to stop here. I'm so glad they did! The vibe of the restaurant is so cool, there is something to look at everywhere you turn. Service was super friendly and quick and the food was amazing. My aunt told me a story about the fried sage dressing and it was still on the menu so of course I ordered it and it was so good. My fiance really enjoyed her food too, it was just real good home cooking. It was classic and also unique at the same time. I travel a lot and places like these are rare these days. There is so much history in this place, many aspects of it were exactly as my family described from over 40 years ago. The amount of love and soul in the food is so evident. It is a truly special place. Thank you Diehl's for the awesome food and memories!

Hostess seated us (three), and instead of asking for drink orders, went back to wiping menus as guests waited to be served. Two different people stopped by our table to tell us our waitress would be with us "in a few minutes", rather than stepping in and take a drink order until the person was free to wait on us. It was ten minutes until we were able to get a drink, and place our order for food. Viewing patrons that had been there prior to our arrival, I noticed none of them had been served any food, nor had the bar side of the restaurant. After 40 min. I found our waitress, and asked to pay for our drinks, so we could leave, and magically our food showed up. When I asked to speak with a manager, (I guess after speaking with the waitress, they draw straws to see who gets that job for the day), a lady showed up to tell us why the didn't have prime rib, (7pm on Fri.), no mac and cheese, no salad, (no one cut the lettuce), and that they were short staffed in the kitchen. That is not a customer problem, it is a Managment problem, or more importantly an owner problem, unless they just don't care! In a small Community, word travels fast, and you will find your selves looking at bills and empty chairs, rather than what you had when you first started.

The hospital in Parkersburg gets a shipment of blood from Columbus six? days a week, I believe. I'm trying to take this route once a week. And when I'm done with my delivery and before I head back to CBUS, I'm going to stop at Chams for lunch. It's not someplace I'd expect in downtown small-city WV, though maybe I'm just prejudging. Probably just prejudging. But it's a very Lebanese place. Nary a French fry in sight. But a nice long menu of middle eastern street food for lunch. Seriously yummy wraps, some salads, a few other things, and baklava. I've been twice. First time, I got the spicy wrap. Excellent. Very tasty, multifaceted flavors; each bite something just a bit different from the last. Just a little heat, nothing like Thai or Szechuan. Your spouse should be able to handle it, but they'll make a surprised noise for the first couple of bites and their nose may sweat. My second trip's lunch was shawarma wrap. Same yumminess, different flavors; no heat. Both were five stars. Also got baklava, one for me, one for my wife because she'd be able to smell the honey and walnuts on my breath when I got home and be very cross if I didn't. We both thought it was very good, if not quite amazing. Second trip I came home with Chams' cream cheese baklava. It's different - a big hunk of, well, cream cheese instead of walnut filling, but still wonderful sticky gooey honey on top. I thought it was very good again, but it wasn't to my wife's taste - just too much cheese for her. Each to their own, right? They also have pistachio baklava, and each kind comes in either filo wrapping or birds-nest style. I love both. The store is clean. Parking on the street nearby isn't much of a challenge when they open at 11AM. The staff is VERY friendly and all speak with just enough accent to be charming yet perfectly understandable. They want you to enjoy your food, and I did. I'll be back. Go there.
