I've been coming here for 10+ years, once a year when I'm in the area on a Friday night for their baked steak. This place is a hole-in-the-wall that has been there for over 60 years and has quite the following! Came in yesterday, and they said it was a new beef they were using which the waitresses thought was better. Couldn't really tell a difference, but it was great as always. Some say their mashed potatoes and rolls are instant/frozen, which i could be wrong on, but I'm pretty sure they aren't as they are always fresh, fluffy, and have great flavor. Every year when I'm in town, Diehl's will always be a dinner stop! If I had one complaint it is that when I asked for the fried potatoes, she asked if I wanted them crispy, and I said yes. They weren't really crispy or well done, but still super yummy. (Sode note: My meal with unsweetened tea was about $20, so not bad for the quality and quantity you get.) read more

I visited here with a few clients who work nearby and rave about this place. They say nearly everything is good and they make many things homemade including: select salad dressings, pies, cobbler, corn bread and rolls, and they even grind their own coffee beans. I chose the German style steak (a hamburger steak) since it comes with cheese and grilled veggies on top and a sweet tea. I chose pinto beans and green beans for my sides and dinner rolls. It was a little pricy as a lunch item, but I guess it is large (12oz), so that is factored into the price. As far as the overall quality, I felt the patty was pre-formed and purchased from a supplier, as opposed to being hand formed in house and made fresh. My colleague also ordered the hamburger steak, but chose one of the other ones on the menu, as they have about 3 or 4 different hamburger steaks to choose from. The green beans tasted canned and the pinto beans were not very flavorful and just bland. I just made a big bowl at home last week, so I know how these should taste. Maybe it's a northern recipe to not put any salt and fat into your beans? Who knows. The best part was easily the homemade dinner rolls. Of course since I had skipped dessert the previous evening, I tried their coconut cream pie which was pretty good I would say. Their service was alright, but I was left without a refill of my iced tea for a while. Our group of four stopped in for lunch on our way home from Kentucky back to Virginia. It was an easy stop off the highway. We were seated quickly and the wait staff was great. Picked up food on a Sunday afternoon. 2 baked steak dinners with mashed potatoes and corn. And 2 sides of dressing. The baked steak was just okay. Had the texture as if it was cooked in a crock pot. The corn was frozen corn. The mashed potatoes were most definitely instant and had not been stirred up well. They were just gross. We only got one order of the dressing and it was good. My family grew up in Nitro and used to eat at this restaurant back in the 60s and 70s. I was recently on a road trip and drove through to see Nitro for myself and they told me I had to stop here. I'm so glad they did! The vibe of the restaurant is so cool, there is something to look at everywhere you turn. Service was super friendly and quick and the food was amazing. My aunt told me a story about the fried sage dressing and it was still on the menu so of course I ordered it and it was so good. My fiance really enjoyed her food too, it was just real good home cooking. It was classic and also unique at the same time. I travel a lot and places like these are rare these days. There is so much history in this place, many aspects of it were exactly as my family described from over 40 years ago. The amount of love and soul in the food is so evident. We went there with a friend and we were seated promptly but the waitress took 15 -20 minutes to bring the menus. Another 20 minutes to come take our order and then it took 45 minutes to get our meals. And they put pepper on my husband's food after we told the waitress that he was allergic to black pepper. Diehl's serves home cooking in Nitro, WV (just a short drive from Charleston). I have been here mostly on Sundays at lunch, the post-church crowd, and it is always busy, but worth the wait. I recently came for dinner, on a weekday, at 7 pm, and it was so different without the Sunday crowds that I am used to! They have specials every day, conveniently located on a print out, tucked into the menu. I dont think I have ever ordered anything off the actual menu! My bf's family (who are from WV) like the baked steak and fried chicken livers (which are very good, actually! And the plate is loaded!) I have had the trout, and most of the other fish dishes and the pork chops - all very good. Each dish comes with 2 sides, which differ every day also (sage dressing (which is like a fried dollop of stuffing), corn, cole slaw, baked beans, baked apples, mashed potatoes, salad (which r simple, chopped lettuce, a few radishes, tomatoes, and white onion, the homemade ranch dressing is great.) U get a choice of rolls or corn bread, I love the rolls, they r so soft! And the pie selection is endless--- PB chocolate pie, coconut cream pie, cheesecake, etc and they too, change every day. The decor is what makes this place unique. Every inch of the walls is covered with something, license plates, crossbows, engine parts, gun parts, toys, black and white pictures of family members, etc. it is layered in history. More recently, they put out large posters of pictures of customers with santa claus, each labeled with a year, 2006, 2007, etc. Locals have been coming for years, u can tell. Lots of MawMaws and PawPaws come. There is a small bar u can eat at too, old school with attached swivel bar stools This is probably one of the unique places to eat in WV. They serve food, the locals have grown up with, their whole life. I would bring friends, visiting out of town, here, to experience the warmth and friendliness of West Virginians, in addition, to their yummy home style cooking. Diehl's is a must visit, whether passing through or a WV local! I have been working my way through the menu and have never had anything that wasn't well cooked, flavorful, and a large helping! They make their ranch dressing in house and it is deeelicious! You'll want to try a made from scratch pie while you're there. You can order hot rolls by the dozen for family dinners, too- and they are a hit! The staff is always friendly, helpful, and quick with service. Two weeks ago I went to Diehl's with my partner. A waiter sat us on said someone would be right with us. We waited twenty minutes and still no one acknowledged us. As we were leaving the fella who sat us said to have a nice day and then he got a quirky look on his face. I believe he then realized we we had not eaten. It's a shame because I deal with the clutter and odd smells everywhere because I like the food. I am only giving 2 stars but if this ever happens again I will never go back. read more

Great family style restaurant that has been a local restaurant in Nitro for decades. The food has always been delicious, the portions are huge and a lot of the food is home made. We got salads to go which was my first to go order ever and I had left overs the portions were so big. I had the homemade ranch dressing which was delicious along with the turkey Cobb salad. Will definitely be a regular place for us to get food from. It's an old diner experience with a lot of local memorabilia that is a cool step back in time. Try it out you'll be a fan. If you are hungry for a great burger grab a JR House named after a 1998 quartet back from Nitro who broke Peyton Manning's high school records. read more

I've eaten here a few times. Their baked steak is good, as are the rolls with REAL butter. YAY! However- My last visit was disappointing. We both ordered the German-style steak. BIG mistake. What we got was two frozen foodservice patties, grilled beyond recognition, with a piece of kraft cheese on top, under a mushroom gravy and grilled onions. The onions were good, but the meat was dry and tough. I got mine with their "famous" sage dressing (apparently the personal recipe of the founder, which should have followed her to her grave). It was a deep-fried patty of indiscernible mush with very little flavor and even less texture. The salad was a bed of chopped/shredded iceberg lettuce with a couple tomato and cucumber slices. The bleu cheese dressing was very very good, which helped elevate the ho-hum salad. My date got the same entree. We both agreed it was pretty bad. It would t have taken much to elevate this- perhaps a freshly made patty, braised in gravy, with a better cheese, like emmenthal for example. I'm a big guy, from the "clean your plate- there are starving children somewhere" school and I'm not one to be overly critical of my food, but I left much of this mess on my plate. The insult of this was the entree cost $20+, for basically a cheeseburger under gravy. Poor value for the money. On the plus side, our server was attentive and kept our drinks refilled. I've heard others say the quality has declined while the prices have risen. I don't begrudge the owners' need to raise prices to offset rising food costs, but they really need to step up their game here. For a total bill of $55, not including tip, there are better options. read more

Well I have to say I was very disappointed. My hubby raved about the place and I kept seeing commercial on tv about it. We arrived about 12:30 on a Thursday, there was a lot of cars but not that many people inside the restaurant. We were told to seat ourselves. Who ever owns the place is definitely a Nascar fan...everywhere...and dusty!!! We seated ourselves and the waitress was right behind us with placemats, utensils and to get our drink order of fountain soda and sweet tea with lemon. We looked over the menu, Tony asked about his old standard Chicken and dumplings only to find out they don't make them anymore but an occasional sunday here and there. We both ordered the open face roast beef sandwich for $9.69...we got two pieces of white bread with chopped up roast beef..chopped up like you are going to feed a baby..not a big fan of that..and mashed potatoes..Now I don't care how many pounds of potatoes they say that they peel daily but my mashed potatoes were INSTANT..not homemade. I love my mashed potatoes and these were NOT homemade...and the gravy that was poured over everything was NOT homemade either... I would eat here again if someone insisted on going and they were going to pick up the check..this place is too expensive for the quality and quantity of food you get..Our check for two people without dessert was $27 ...a little much for my blood for the food I received. Southern dining at it's finest. I have visited West Virginia on occasion and quickly learned that the culinary adventures in the area are not to be judged on their health benefits. Diehl's can not be called healthy by any stretch of the imagination. But for this city girl, it's an awesome opportunity to try real home cooked cookin'. I had the roast as well as the mac&cheese and mashed potatoes. I also went for the sweet tea because why not. (My friend asked if they had non-sweet tea and the waitress said no, they only had sweet and unsweet. Cute.) For dessert our waitress rattled off a list of pies and our hosts were desperate for the graham cracker pie. My rule is when there's a regional food that comes highly recommended by the locals you eat it! The pie at first bite was a little more gelatinous than creamy (think lemon meringue texture) but I found I couldn't stop eating the darn thing. I ended up taking half of my piece in a box and eating it just a couple hours later, as soon as I was physically able. If you are in Charleston and are looking to control your cholesterol, skip Diehl's. But if you can afford a calorie splurge, get yourself here. read more
