I felt almost anxious trying to find what I wanted, a running skirt aka skort. I had to run around the store to track them down and compare because they can be found in each specific brand area (ie, Nike, Adidas, New Balance), in the golf section, and back in running. It was a serious PITA. I understand people are picky about the companies from which they buy products. It's somewhat nice to have things divided up into brand names; however, I really wish clearance racks would have been more noticeable. I was hell bent on leaving with a running skirt and didn't purchase a single one because I didn't feel like dragging them around the store to compare. I did wind up purchasing a really nifty "infinity shrug" from the running section. I suppose I never would have thought to buy it or come across it if Dick's wasn't such a dick about their displays. So, I guess maybe there's some rhyme and reason to the layout if they're simply trying to wear you down and take your money. Sports Authority is much better, in my opinion. I probably won't be back here because even the employees weren't able to tell me where what I was looking for was exactly. That's not a good sign. read more

Well, they do live up to thier name. Dick's: They have several on the payroll. Sporting Goods: They have tons of these. They left "self service" off of their sign. I feel that "Dick's Self Service Sporting Goods" sounds nice...... I knew what I wanted. I knew they had it at this store. I just couldn't wait to get off work, so I drove over here on my lunch break to buy a specific item, no questions asked. The parking lot was full, but that is typical of this area. I decide to park and run in despite the fact that I may not have time to eat today. I wanted to buy something that bad. I walked in to a superstore full of everything sporty. Nobody greeted me at the door, but I reminded myself that I was not at Wal-Mart (thank God) and decided to look for what I wanted on my own. I FOUND IT! There it was in all it's glory........but a locked cabinet prevented our joyus union. I look left, then right. I see no Dicks. I turn around to ask the cashier....but that station has a "closed" sign taped to it. Still no Dicks. I start to worry and begin pacing.....I must have this today. I start actively seeking out a key holding Dick. I find none. After 15 minutes, I make my last ditch effort. At not quite the top of my lungs I announce "Is aaaaaanyone willing to help me? I am a quick sale, and I have no questions?!?!?" No Dicks responded. Hanging my head in defeat and total dissapointment, I leave the store empty handed, but still with a full wallet. I walked past a few Dicks, and none of them spoke to me. I should have told them that they blew a 200 dollar sale, but I don't think they would have cared...........they are Dicks afterall. read more

What is it with management at gigantic chain stores who think it's adequate to only have ONE register open on a Saturday afternoon? The line is about 20 people long, and I mean 20 paying customers, so instances of a family of 3 or 4 means the line is about 40 people long. I decided to go nicely ask a rep if they could please call their management and perhaps open up another checkout lane. She actually did and someone came promptly and opened up Register 2. That's why they get the 2 stars. I know we tirelessly hear how the economy rots, but Dick, you've got an abundance of customer service employees on the floor who are willing to assist us and recommend things to buy so we can line you're filthy pockets. But why won't you let us leave??? Why do we have to stand in line for a half hour to PAY you??? The term "Corporate Hell" is a flagrant redundancy. DICK! read more

Usually a fan of this store and spend a lot of money but I probably won't be back after a horrible experience. It was almost closing and I was making my way to the front but still looking at things when a security guard came up and instead of simply saying the store was closing and asking us to leave which we would have he was very rude telling us to get out and followed us all the way to the exit. There were other customers in the store I don't know why we were targeted. We were being treated as if we stole something. I am giving this Dicks Sporting Goods 2 stars. They have a good amount of products, and if you just want something you can find easy, then it is a good store. Now, if you want some clothing, and you want to try them on, good luck finding a sales person to unlock the changing rooms. Same with if you need help in pretty much any department, you have a 50/50 chance someone will be there to help you on the day you shop. I often purchase ammunition, and have tried a couple times to do so at Dicks. A couple times someone was behind the counter and it was fast. But a couple other times I stood around for 15minutes (even walking up and down the main lanes, and saw no workers, anywhere upstairs in sight) and when nobody ever came, I just left. So. If you are going there to look around, and are sure you won't need any help, then this is a good place to shop. Their prices are usually higher than what I can find the same items for online; however, this is true for pretty much any local store. You get the ability to buy and have right now. Horrific selection. I have no idea how they are in business. I came to exchange or return a Cyber Monday purchase, and they had absolutely nothing in stock from their entire Nike selection (short of a couple pairs of Size 11 women's). In the store, I discovered that the pair I purchased online (from Dick's own website) was selling for double what I paid. DOUBLE. I happily walked right back out with them and will not be returning - the shoes, or me physically. I hadn't been inside in years, and this showed me I have no reason to. read more

I want to like Dick's Sporting Goods. And this location is a-ok. It's fine. If you absolutely need to outfit yourself with a certain pair of Nike running shorts or you feel ok about spending retail on a North Face ski jacket, this is your jam. But this location (and Dick's in general) has pros and cons: Pros: -Solid brand names like the options I listed above. Nike, Prana, Adidas, Under Armour, Columbia, North Face, etc. -Pretty solid selection of merchandise in terms of colors, sizing, etc. -Plenty of parking for easy in, easy out Cons: -I swear I've never been helped here unless I'm actually checking out or making a return. I have no idea where the employees actually are...this can very well be because the shop is so large. -Sales. They don't really have them. Beyond an occasional markdown or stuffed-in-the-corner clearance rack, you're SOL if you're a bargain hunter. -Athletic shoes. Their selection is moderate at best...and the sales people are exceptionally *unhelpful* here. I dare you to try to get a pair of running shoes here on a weekend day. I'm meh on this particular Dick's Sporting Goods but still find myself roaming the spacious halls when I'm in the need of something specific and sporty. read more

I came here to do some Christmas shopping. It's a huge store which is nice. However. There are not enough people working on the floor. I had to walk from one end to the other in order to find an associate to help me. Mind you, there were only about 15-20 customers in the two story store. And then I wanted to look at a FitBit bracelet which are locked in a case. Thank goodness for the "Push for Help" button to get service. Now I don't have to walk half the store to find some help. Turns out, I had to wait another 15 minutes for an associate to make their way to me. And then! As I was waiting in one line, another shopper came to wait in a different line. A cashier opened up and she motioned the other guy to ring him up even though we were standing there first. Poor customer service. read more

The manager at the Shaumburg location was very rude and spoke to my family and I VERY disrespectfully, one of the cashiers was very rude as well. Big store with a very large selection of clothing. I went here today to buy roller blades. Spent about 10 minutes wandering around downstairs and looking for an employee to help me find them but literally didn't see one. So I ventured upstairs and finally found the rollerblades. Still saw no one to ask the questions I had concerning them. Finally I just left. Went to sports authority and received help and found the same rollerblades for $10 less. read more

I'd have to say that the Schaumburg and Niles location are about the same. The Schaumburg location has a bit more running gear selection (IMO). But BOTH locations have issues with price adjustments, or I have issues with both locations on price adjustments because once at each location I had to correct the cashier and let him/her know that the price is actually advertised less than what they were trying to charge me, and both times we had to actually show them the display. Shop with a watchful eye at this retailer! On the upside, they have a really good selection of Under Armour.....more so than a lot of the running stores in the city. read more

What's deal with the haters? Dick's Sporting Goods is a great post-dinner, pre-Starbucks wine, strolling location at the Streets. It's enormous and always has a ton of items on sale. My wife and I outfitted our football tailgate with items at Dick's (all on sale). Now, I do wish they would reopen their climbing wall. I love climbing and there is very little in terms of reasonably priced climbing options around the Windy City. Even a few hours a week would be nice: it would draw customers in and be a fun activity. read more

I don't like this store. I wasn't much of a fan of this place even when it was Galyan's. It's a glorified Sportmart. A little more selection, bigger celings, and employees that wear synthetic clothing. I wanted to buy shoes here yesterday and the service was horrible. I felt guilty for asking the guy to bring shoes. His job is to get shoes! It was a high school thug kid who seemed way to pisssed to still have a job. I arrived at opening, did my "strategic" shopping and got out. I had a general idea of what I was looking for. Three different sales associates helped me find what I needed. Two of them actually took me to the aisle that had what I needed. Dick's has a huge selection of name brand clothing but you'll pay top dollar for it so shop the sale and clearance racks. My wife and I were in the market for a new bike for our daughter. We had been to a previous store in which the service was bad, and the salesperson did not fit our daughter properly to the bike she was interested in (frame size was not calculated correctly). We decided to try this Dick's Sporting Goods store in Schaumburg (store nearest our house did not have the bike we wanted in stock), and my family is glad that we did. Chad, their resident mechanic and bike expert, quickly found the bike we wanted, and almost immediately pointed out that the frame size needed to be bigger (a 16 rather than a 14--roughly a medium is what our daughter needed), and that the previous recommendation was wrong. He really went out of his way to make sure that our daughter liked the bike, was comfortable in the fit, and knew how to use the basics (gear shifting, brakes, etc.). He answered all of our questions with a level of understanding and expertise that was remarkable (a true expert). Best of all, unlike so many other sporting goods stores we have tried in the past, he made us feel important, and not just like another sale. He did not pressure us at all but made recommendations (as far as accessories went) based on our needs. We love the bike, too. I've noticed a large amount of reviews complaining about the service here. I can't say that I share the same opinion. Maybe it's just my experiences, but I haven't had a bad experience here. The place is massive. So, should there be a problem with service, I think that's more than reasonable. They may be understaffed, but their place has everything you could ask for in a sporting goods store. It's two floors, with escalators to get to the next floor. They also have a massive climbing wall inside. They have departments in running, soccer, basketball, hockey, baseball, archery, hunting, camping, snowboarding, etc etc. I've never gone hunting but I always seem to veer towards that section, their equipment is great! They offer all the necessary apparel for sporting as well: under amor, shorts, shirts, headbands, etc. Should you be seeking ANYTHING regarding sporting gear, apparel, or equipment, you'll most likely find it here. I only give it three stars because 1. Yeah, they're usually understaffed and the current staff never seems to be as knowledgeable as they should be of the equipment, and 2. Because of the prices. Everything here seems to be a couple dollars more than you could find it elsewhere. Otherwise, not a bad place. read more

I confess: I am not an outdoorsy kind of girl. I much prefer air conditioning and/or heat, a comforter, and a pillow over "roughing it" anytime. In fact, I will admit that my idea of roughing it, is a Motel 6. About as outdoorsy as I get is tailgating at Bears games. My boyfriend, on the other hand, hunts. He likes to go out into the wilderness and sit in a tree and shoot at things, specifically, deer. I really don't have a problem with this, because venison is tasty. Back on topic, he needed slugs. So, we went to Dick's last night. Did you know that this location is the largest by square footage in the nation? The guy at the checkout counter told me that. The associate in the hunting department, a sweet older gentleman named Cary, was very helpful to both of us in deciding what to purchase. The man has slugs he is loyal to for shooting, but for target practice and getting used to his new scope, Cary was able to offer some less expensive alternatives. We also both had a nice conversation with him about all things, not just hunting. If I had all the money in the world to spend, I would've bought many things I would probably never again use, like a $250 North Face tent that sleeps two if you're cuddlers, or a way expensive bicycle. I would've settled on some new yoga gear, since that's my latest thing. All in all, I thought that Dick's was going to be a horrific experience, and ended up being pretty okay. I also got a pretty good laugh out of a deer field dressing "kit" called "BUTT OUT!" Gross. read more

This place is too big for its own good. Before it became Dick's, it was a bustling place with a popular rock wall. Seems like all the activity has gone away and now you walk into a cavernous store staffed by just a few people. They probably keep staffing levels low so they can pay the rent on a huge store that doesn't seem to have enough customers to support the place. I'll continue to shop here because they do have a large variety. But trying to get service or find an open register can be a challenge. read more

This place is HUGE...you can probably camp out and they probably won't notice, its that big (and they have everything you will need to have camp out). Sales staffs were very nice and fast, especially the golf section. My clients wanted something and they responded very quickly and patiently. As for he selection of items, they are really weak. Probably the weakness of those large mega sports store, but there's really nothing that shines. UA and TNF brands were strong but not complete, considering the size of the store. I'm generally a fan of Dick's Sporting Goods because they have a huge selection, good prices, and knowledgable staff. In all honesty, I've never had a problem before and they are my go-to store for anything sports or outdoors-related. That being said, this past visit, I took in my mountain bike for a tune-up. I'm still waiting to get it back...a week later. If I'm paying over $50, I expect both quality and speed. In addition to the long wait, when I called to check-in on my bike, I was left on hold for over 10 minutes while they "tried to find the paperwork." If I wasn't uneasy in the first place, their disorganization and confusion on the phone definitely made me nervous. I sure hope my bike is fixed right. I've waited long enough already. read more

The people in the shoe department were rude and seemed annoyed that we wanted to try on the shoes. They kept walking away from us when we had questions even though no one else was in that section. When we talked to them they didn't stop their conversation and seemed like they were annoyed to stop talking amongst themselves. When I was given two right shoes and told them about it, the other girl mocked me. I'm sorry I don't want two right shoes. They were talking about their discounts in front of us and friend drama. The girl working with us was complaining on how she has only been there for an hour and how it seemed like forever, if you don't like the job, quit!! You'd be doing us all a favor. So, my most recent visit here on 8/16/2016. I came in with my brother looking for some rollerblades. To start with, upon entering the store all employees scatter, oh no there's a customer, everyone run in the opposite direction. We walked around literally half the entire store looking for an employee to point us towards the rollerblades, all the while watching employees see us and then walk the other direction. When we found an employee who didn't run away as quickly, he simply pointed in the direction, no here let me show you where they are and provide any real customer service. Upon arriving to the rollerblades area, nothing was organized and different blades were scattered everywhere. We found a pair and tried them on. We rolled over maybe 50 feet away from the rest of the blades when an extremely unpleasant lady by the name of Kelly walked by and informed us that we had to stay within the "rollerblade/bike area". So first, no help at all and then when we do your job for you we get told we can't try them more than 20 feet away from the blade area? Really? Is this customer service? Did I mention these are $200 rollerblades we were trying on. Convenient how Kelly was there to tell us to blade in a certain area only but was nowhere to be found when your customers actually need assistance. I explained to her how it took so long for us to find someone and even then we didn't receive the proper assistance. Her response was an odd smirk and a slight laugh. She immediately stated and recommended that I take a survey and state that they are understaffed. No apology. No respect to her customers. No customer service. No sense of responsibility. Kelly seemed like she was having a terrible time working there and was wishing she could be anywhere else but there. This is an extremely rude and irresponsible employee that pretty much tried pushing the blame away from herself. We were absolutely disgusted and appalled by her childish behavior. We did not make what would have been a near $500 purchase, including two pairs of rollerblades and accessories to go with. I don't want Kelly to get disciplined for this unfortunate experience that we had at your store. I simply want her along with the rest of the staff to be better trained and to acquire a better understanding of what real customer service actually is. Is that too much to ask? Until then we will take our business elsewhere. And we all know about word of mouth. read more

I have been a frequent customer of this location even though there are other locations closer to my house. But tonight was absolutely horrible! I went in to go shopping for some new workout clothes because I received my rewards coupon, but to my dismay this location was only letting 5 people in at a time because of people wanting to buy Cubs gear. I told the sales associate I'm here to shop for clothes and the management would still not allow myself and several other people that weren't shopping for Cubs gear in. Poor managing on this part. I remember when the Blackhawks won they didn't regulate how many people can come into the store to purchase gear. I even tried calling in ahead of time to ensure I would be able to get in, but no one was answering the phones. Absolutely terrible management and poor customer service. I wish I could go lower than one star! I brought in my bike rim almost 3 weeks ago to find out how much it would cost to get a new one ordered. They said they would call me back the next day with a price and I ended up calling them back 3 days later after no phone call! They said I had to wait for their bike tech to come in to let me know which wouldn't be until the following week! After almost 3 weeks of waiting I still have no bike tire and they have made no sincere effort of trying to solve this issue. Unbelievably aggravating! Then they said they would do the labor for free, all they have to do is put the inner tube, tire and rim together. I could do that on my own in 5 minutes. Ridiculous. read more

Dick's Sporting Goods is hit or miss, depending on what you're looking for and where in the store that item is located. I have had great luck here finding sports apparel. Last year my husband was given a Blackhawks jacket from a rival chain, but it didn't fit him, so we went to return it for store credit. They had no other sizes and were unable to tell us if other nearby locations might have them, so we decided to see what other 'Hawks apparel was offered. Um, none, except in children's sizes. We ended up spending the money on a pair of pajama pants and a lot of socks. When the same thing happened at Dick's though, they had jackets...and jerseys...and shirts...and hats...and more! This place is only second to the Blackhawks store on Michigan Avenue for team apparel, and when we want to get somebody 'Hawks gear as a gift, this is always our first stop now if we have no other reason to go into the city. They're also great for apparel for local baseball, football, and basketball teams including some college teams. Their shoe department offers a pretty good selection and is staffed well. My very picky husband got some new running shoes here and not only found what he wanted, but got it in his size, after an employee helped him trying on a few pairs. We've tried this before at a competitor and frequently discovered either nobody staffing their shoe department or a serious lack of size offerings. I think Dick's will also be our first stop for running shoes now, too. In other departments, though, they just don't have their sh*t together at all. When we wandered upstairs looking for an item, it was like being in a different store. We had to search for an employee, and when we found one, he was spectacularly unhelpful. He acted like our question was beneath him, and we were wasting his time. We were looking for what I now know is called a Boston valve with an adapter, but at the time, we just described to him what we wanted. He said that he didn't know if Dick's has it, but if they did, they'd be by the tents, and then he went back to chatting with another worker. I figured that makes sense--people camp with air mattresses, right? Only, we went over there, and there weren't any air mattresses. Or valves. Or anything like that. We went back to find him, but he was gone, so we wandered around trying to guess where the valve might be. Is it over by the bikes? If it was, we missed it. How about the boats? Sadly, they DID have ONE kind of Boston valve in this section, but because nobody helped us, we didn't realize at the time that it was what we needed. We also weren't sure if we needed adapters for this valve, if they were included or separate, etc and again, there was nobody to help us. We left without buying the valve, but had we bought it, they would have also been able to sell us on a pump and adapter. That is, if they had been selling us on anything instead of having some sort of Very Important Conversation about facial piercings. We've also tried looking for winter coats here and had a similar problem--nobody was around to explain to us why the same brand of coat in the same size fit so differently from one style to another (it turns out because you can zip a separate liner into it, but we had no idea), why some brands cost so much more than others (my guess: because this store likes to sell high-end, marked-up apparel brands), or why a certain coat had a million zippers (still no clue). We ended up getting the coat from Target, where there was nobody to help answer questions, but we were paying a fraction of the price to puzzle through the offerings on our own. One perk is that there are occasionally celebrity appearances here. I have noticed Q&A's, autograph signings, and just plain old "come listen to me talk about my sponsor's product and then take a picture" athlete events. One notable visitor, for example, was Shaun White. If you like this kind of thing, keep an eye out for these events, as I think they try to do one per season. I myself don't collect autographs or anything, so it's just one more thing making the parking lot congested, although I might care a little more if my child is into sports when she's older. In the end, Dick's is good for some things, but not for others. If you come here and grab an employee, do not let him or her go until you get what you need! Lasso that person if you must (well, no, that's probably illegal), because otherwise, you'll probably be on your own if you're shopping for anything but shoes. read more

this place is just waaaay to big for it's own good. fortunately for me, i've been here enough times to know where pretty much everything is - no need to run around the entire place to search for an employee. as for everyone else? you're basically SOL. customer service over the phone isn't much better, it's a lot of transfering from one department to another. I've been on hold for over 15 minutes before, then 'accidentally' hung up on. in sum? customer service blows - don't expect a 'hello' when you walk in, or an 'are you finding everything alright,' heck, don't even expect to see a single employee until you're ready to check out. maybe they're all hiding? awesome selection of chicago sports team gear. they've definitely got an emphasis on clothes over sporting goods, but that's what you have stores like REI and specialty equipment stores for. fine by me. note to self? my car is NOT stolen, I probably just parked on the other side of the building. read more

Climbing wall in Schaumburg and a new location in Palatine . . . you might pay a little more but going to the Grand Opening in Palatine today to get my bike (i have a bike, i have a bike!!!) Mark knew everything about mountain bikes, and the girl behind the counter gave us an extra $10 off! Fabulous service and an amazing display. Even not on grand opening weekend in Schaumburg when things are a little more lax, definately a fun place to check out the latest in sports stuff - for the extra sporty or not so sports inclined! read more

My husband and I had one of the worst shopping experiences to date at this store, which is suprising based on the hard economic times and stiff competition from places like Sports Authority, you would think anyone walking through the door would be treated to top rate customer service....not here. Here is my list of complaints: 1. Five seconds after entering store, asked the manager if I could process a return at any register, he said yes. I took my place at the back of a five person line, only to overhear the man behind me ask the same manager the same question with a different answer: "Yes, but I can do you return here, that way you avoid the line." Grrrr. 2. Made my return, went to the shoe department, found a pair of shoes I wanted to try on.....but where was the nearest sales associate? I'm guessing Timbuktu. My husband did a lap around the first floor before finding someone and even then I had to do MY shoe trying on in the MEN's section for fear that the associate we finally got to help us would leave. 3. Found a pair of shoes I liked and noticed several stickers that said, "miCOACH compatible." I asked the sales associate what that meant? He answered he didn't know, he had never read any specs on that. Not, "Hold on, I'll find out" or "Let me see if someone else knows." Quick Google search revealed the mystery: It's an Adidas coaching progarm. 4. Waited on the second floor for 15 minutes for an associate to open a dressing room. Saw a sign directing a waiting party to "Ring Bell" but there was no bell. Now it was my turn to do a lap around the store looking for an associate, when one was found, she said, "Oh, the bell fell" and then pointed out what looked like a smoke detector slightly hidden behind some clothes, "See that's the bell." Sure, why didn't I figure that one out. 5. My husbands shoes rang up the wrong price ($10 more expensive), when we protested we were told "somebody" had switched the shoes from their shelves. And the more expensive price was the price. That is the point I broke, telling the manager, Median, that this was a bad experience as far as customer service went.
