A good burger, fries and shake at a great price! My son and I were running errands and decided to grab a quick burger for lunch in Ballard and Dick's was the place to go. Dick's looks like and probably was one of the first fast food restaurants in Seattle. It has that iconic large neon burger sign and huge glass facade showing menu and kitchen from the outside counter. Dick's I expect is and deservedly so thriving in the COVID world as it has always been counter service and the workers are protected by glass from their customers. They serve their $3.65 Dick's Deluxe with features two patties that equal a 1/4 lb of hamburger, special sauce, diced pickles, lettuce and nice slice of a good American cheese. I grabbed this with a $2 order of fries and a chocolate shake. The shake was a creamy chocolaty delight that complemented the fresh cut fries (skins on). The girl rudely said " NO, we don't do that!" I had her ask the manager and again it was a NO! Why?? I would pay the price, I just don't eat meat and they did not have any other options. So I was able to order just French fries which were ok. Too bad I had to miss out on the bun with the works. Customer service at this establishment is one of the worst I have come across!!!! To the blonde with her hair in a bun... you started out sweet and then you did a 180 and became not very nice. You never gave me a reason other than "we don't do it like that". That's not a reason. To the older woman with dark hair working the register across the kitchen... please get some manners! Yelling at customers from across inside the building is embarrassing for you because it makes you look and sound ignorant. And is not a good representation of Dick's. I would think working in that establishment that managers would not want their employees to argue with the customers. In my situation it's not brain surgery. How hard is it to leave off one patty? Pretty off the beaten path, this Dick's doesn't see as much traffic as its other Seattle cousins. It's pretty much a blessing. Dick's are notorious for long lines and unavailable parking late at night. Whenever I crave Dicks I usually visit this location. Less customers generally leads to better service and they can spend more time on your order than other locations. All my orders have been fine and no mistakes. And although their fries are on the softer side of the crispness spectrum, they're still really yummy, and always fresh. I usually get the Deluxe, and a shake, and fríes, and it always hits the spot. The deluxe is the way to go because the lettuce, tomatoes and condiments help cut the fattiness of it. The fries are super greasy as well. My expectations were high for here and perhaps that's my mistake beyond the old school burger joint charm I don't see the praise. I had the deluxe and it was ok but nothing to get excited about. The lady somehow accomodated my request to remove the pickles. The option to remove something should be there though. The line is slow but the food is for the most part already made. For what it's worth its very cheap. We got a deluxe, special, 2 fries and a drink all for under $10. So you get what you pay for. A nickel for each additional ketchup Isn't a big deal but what a bother and its hard to dump on your burger. It's nice to have that novelty but things like that should be a bit more modernized. Lastly my peeve of peeves, cash only ugh. On top of this, no signs warning you! Decent at best food but that's about it. read more

Of course its not the best burger you've ever had in your life, nor is it the best burger in Seattle but it is a Seattle classic. Its like what In & Out is to LA..kind of.. Also it really hits the spot after those late night adventures. The never use frozen patties, fries are hand cut and shakes are hand dipped...these things are always a plus. I generally get a Special w/ fries and a strawberry shake. I love the Strawberry Shake here. Than I usually feel nasty afterwards...but I guess its all part of the package. The Holman Rd location is my favorite and IMO the best one, its been around forever. Service is fast and friendly like usual. I came here with my aunt, who grew up near here in Seattle. So that was fun because she was all about going here and told me stories of her childhood walking to Dick's with her sisters all excited to get a treat when her Dad came back from sea and there was money. :) Also, the fries are delicious, the old fashioned whole-potato kind with bits of skins and were not extremely but plenty crispy, and hot when served. Don't forget to order a tiny plastic cup of ketchup for $0.05. The Deluxe burger was solid, I give it an enthusiastic 8/10 points - 2 thin patties, a little char around the edges, plenty of cheese, plenty of crispy lettuce, the ubiquitous PNW thousand-island dressing in lieu of mayo. My aunt tells me that Dick's used to, and may still, help its employees pay tuition for college. I believe it, because our cashier/counter server bestowed our lunch upon us with great elan and enthusiasm, another fun element to this place. I spent 30 years living in the midwest before moving back to the best coast, as a result I might ask for onion and mustard next time. And there will be a next time, because this location is near Swanson's Nursery so I'll be back for sure. read more

Sure, the jokes write themselves but past the plethora of jokes you can make... what else is there? Their burgers didn't stand out in my mind and the fries on both occasions were limp. I tried to eat here... twice! And both times were just... blech. When I explain this to other people, the majority say the same thing - it's great when you are drunk. Well hell, so are bad decisions about sexual partners but it doesn't mean that I have to be a lemming about it. I was told this is Seattle's own burger joint and was excited to try it. When I arrived, I found a large parking lot with a walk up window and a long line. We were in Seattle, from out of town, and we were driving around starving looking for a place to eat. I'm so glad we stumbled across Dicks, their food is great and they have rock bottom prices. We ordered the deluxe burgers, cheeseburger, and some shakes. I loved the relish spread on the deluxe burgers, it's so different I have never had anything like it on a burger before. The shakes were delicious !!! The fries were a little soggy, we weren't crazy about them. As legendary fast food goes, Dick's is in the upper pantheon. Say that it is 12:30 AM and your are hungry, for whatever reason....We'll Dick is ready? The burgers and all else are way cheap and almost the perfect late night pig-out. The patties are a tasty mess along with the rest, just don't look at them first, they LOOK like a gone-wrong middle school science project. But the taste is anything but. Americans tend to eat with our eyes, which is overall a mistake. Dick's are worth at least one Michelin star. Fries also look distorted and writhey like a cartoon torture victim. Not so, they are true pommes-frites with the potato flavor shining through. No ketchup needed, though the mix is delish... I heartily and wholly recommend Dick's as your source for late night noshing. Not exactly a large or expansive menu, for sure, but what they do do they do very very well. read more

I can't imagine this being the best burger in town, I prefer Red Mill Burger, any day of the week, but there is something intrinsically delicious about the burgers here. It's a mystery why myself and thousands are compelled to come here, on an almost weekly basis, to get what many would call, just a simple burger. It's a Seattle thing, like Ivars Chowder House, there is a following here, that is frenzy for the taste of these burgers. There is a small menu, the Dick's Special and Dick's Deluxe is what I recommend. They both have the "trademark" taste, and look, it's a good burger, that is going to keep you happy, no matter the time, weather, or season. It's not healthy, and it's not meant to be. It's a bun, meat, cheese, lettuce and their special sauce. Freshly made, much of it, made directly behind the cashiers. What about the milkshakes?
