This is a great bakery, always has been....but let's also make sure we clear some things up. The bakery employee made a mistake; they said no to allowing a service dog in the store. Upon learning the service dog should be allowed in, the employee and store apologized and invited her back in. Mistakes happen - instead of denying it, they admitted their error. Instead of using this as a teaching moment and learning from this to avoid it happening again, social media took over. Mistakes happen but this bakery did everything afterwords to right their wrong. I've gone to Dick's for years; Carol has waited on me for years. She has worked there longer than I have been alive. The food is fantastic and inexpensive, a Berea staple. You can get half a dozen fresh cookies for something like $1.20. The coffee is excellent. As a BW Conservatory student I saw how the Dick's workers were regularly (usually unintentionally) harassed by loud, excited college students. They were generally really nice about it and we usually settled down. Certainly this doesn't excuse asking a blind woman to leave because the employee didn't recognize a service dog. However, Carol made an honest mistake based on past experience. She publicly and privately apologized for it as soon as she understood what she'd done. The blind woman and her family have publicly stated that they do not want backlash on Dick's because of this situation. They only want awareness and compassion for all involved. Now the internet is out to excoriate a small, locally owned family business and the 74-year-old employee who has never worked anywhere else. Carol isn't a manager, she isn't the owner. She's a lady who worked in a bakery for 60 years and royally screwed up once on a Tuesday. Four stars because it seems to me that Dick's has not backed Carol up. It's possible to advocate for your business and support your employees at the same time. People. A little compassion is hardly ever misplaced. read more

Wonderful bakery and love the two gals out front. Over the years I've seen people take their pets into the bakery. Pets....not service dogs. In this instance, it was a service dog. A mistake was made. Apology was provided. Aggrieved party accepted the apology. Thousands of folks that have been frequenting the bakery for years will continue to do so. What cute little place! My friend and I were in Berea for a recital at the BW Conservatory and after we passed by this place on our way to a late lunch, we decided to stop back before the recital for a treat. Even though it was before closing, there still was a decent selection. The counter girls were nice, though the only thing was they gave sort of vague descriptions of some of the items left. The most surprising thing was the cost. I don't know if it was because it was at the end of the day, but a pastry and a brownie, both large sized, were only $1.50. We both really enjoyed our treats and glad we stopped by! I definitely recommend trying them out. read more

i had forgotten about dick's bakery until i went back to berea today for a memorial service. dick's bakery. quintessential to the bw conservatory student before monday and wednesday choir. i don't exactly remember what the amazing deal was, but it was like a kajillion cookies for a buck or something. and their chocolate chip cookies were so freaking good. homemade baked goods goodness. i don't think i've ever had any of the cakes or anything, but those cookies. damn those cookies. and you can imagine the jokes we told regarding the name of the bakery. regardless- the cookies. the cooookies!! read more

I even managed to get substitute teachers to write me passes to get the chocolate chip cookies (legendary) for the entire class on lazy days. The ladys who work there are always smiling and welcome everyone who enters. I have a friend who teaches at BW, so I was exposed to this place years before the recent brouhaha (woman violating the law by telling a blind customer that she couldn't come in with her service dog). I couldn't wait to try it-- I'm always hoping to find the local business that is an undiscovered gem. But I haven't been a customer in some time. Let's start with some cold, hard truth. This woman was not a cuddly grandma with a twinkle in her eye, offering a smile and a kind word to everyone she met. She's of those cranky battle-axes that you tiptoed around, so they wouldn't go off on you-- the kind where you leave shaking your head and saying "I understand that she's been there forever-- I just don't understand WHY." You ask for chocolate chip cookies, she grabs for pecan raisin and when you point out that she got the order wrong, she yells at you. She's ringing your order up and your wife decides to add something extra and she yells at her. (Since they don't take credit cards and there's no high-tech point of sales system tied to an inventory management system, who cares?) You make a spur-of-the-moment decision buy a birthday cake and want a message added. She goes off. It's one thing to say "Sorry, but the decorator who does that isn't here", and another to scream that you need 24 hours notice and how dare you just come in and expect them to drop everything. All of the above would be tolerable if the product was astonishingly good. The waitresses at the old Corky & Lenny's used to be so brusque that they made you long for the warmth and kindness of the Cleveland Police. But the food was good enough that you accepted it. (The woman who does my alterations, and the guys who repair my appliances can be the same way.) The food you get from Dick's Bakery simply isn't good enough to justify service issues. Using the same recipe and the same ingredients you used in 1953 does mean your food is less likely to be filled with chemicals. That said, advances in both ingredients and equipment make it possible to create food that is much higher in quality than it was 60+ years ago. Plus, times and taste change, I'm not a big fan of fondant, but their buttercream is quite ordinary. The maple frosting is cloying. I tried cookies, cakes, tarts, pies, doughnuts and danishes-- all solidly in the middle of the pack. I didn't even bother with the breads-- they looked sad. I can think of places elsewhere in Berea, or in Cleveland, Cleveland Heights, Lakewood, Maple Heights, Parma, Rocky RIver and Columbia Station that stomp it. There are probably half a hundred neighborhood bakeries scattered around Cuyahoga County as good or better, I'd give it 2.5 to 3 stars on the food (OK, nothing amazing), but the old lady, the erratic selection (you never know what will be there) and not taking credit cards make it easy to take it down to 2. read more

The "Date and Nut" cake is fabulous and my all time favorite! I have been a loyal patron for 25 years and the cake I order is "Date and Nut". For those of you who love chocolate order the cake or cupcakes with the white or chocolate cream frosting! Their cakes and cupcakes are the BOMB and always a crowd pleaser! The only comment I would make is that if you want the cake decorated a certain way (with colors) be very specific. Yellow writing on white frosting was boring and it was for a retirement party. I love this bakery! It is a shame that people can't give a break to an employee who was just not aware of the guidelines regarding Service Dogs! There are far worse things going on in our world that really could use our attention! This little instance is not one of them!!!! So...as for the bakery that I so love...their Date Nut Cake with that frosting is to die for!!! I live probably 12 miles or so from Berea, but I would drive 50 if I had to! The staff is always so kind and considerate! You have to admit there are not many free-standing bakeries left in our area and this one is the best! Freshly baked breads, cakes and pasteries! YUM! I read so many good reviews I thought I'd try Dick's bakery. Nothing was marked, so I had questions about a few of the items. All she wanted to know was 'how many are you getting?" I didn't know......still looking, for Pete's sake! When I asked if they had bear claws, she said (kinda snippy) "I never heard of them". ??? A bakery that doesn't have bear claws and never heard of them? She leaned against the cash register and gave vague locations of a couple things I asked about. I asked for something with nuts in it, and cinnamon rolls or something with cinnamon in it. The whatever it was with nuts was not impressive at all. I can't speak for the cinnamon things....haven't tried it yet. But I won't be going there again. read more

I went in to order a cake and the women was so unpleasant and didn't want to be inconvenienced at all. I was ordering 2 cakes for my kids and i asked for a menu of what cake flavors i could choose from and she just blurted out the flavors quickly. Didn't ask what i wanted to have the cakes decorated with so i asked again she had a nasty attitude and then all of a sudden there were all these extra charges for adding a buttercream design no way I am pay 50 dollars for 2 eight inch cakes i would rather go to Costco! read more

This place is the best! I went there over the holidays and it felt and looked absolutely magical! All done up for the holidays with the snow falling outside in the pre-dawn dark. Just so special! We just ordered a variety of 450 Christmas cookies for our monthly church program that features entertainment followed by lunch. We ordered the cookies because we thought they would be a special dessert treat, and WOW, what a treat!!!! They looked beautiful and tasted even better!!! Unfortunately I must give a rating for this review to be posted. Otherwise the rating would have been ZERO. Our family purchased a Date N Nut cake for a birthday party. We picked it up on a Friday afternoon and we were reassured that it would be fresh to serve on that Sunday . We were as well told to place it in a cool dry place rather than refrigerating, which we did. When Sunday came the box was opened and to our surprise there was a swarm of very tiny brown ants coming out of the cake. We had to throw away it away and rushed to Giant Eagle for another cake as the party was starting very soon. As we all know nuts can become rancid, which I believe is what happened here. The Manager at the bakery, when we called to tell what happened to the cake however did not seem to understand that concept, that nuts do get rancid. It is possible that their nuts were rancid before even using for the Date N Nut batter that day. And it is possible that anyone who bought a Date N Nut cake that day, ate it before Sunday, before the ants hatched from the nuts. Google it, yes it can happen. Raw nuts can harbor insect eggs. We were probably that one in a thousand that it happened to and since the cake was not consumed soon enough , the rancid nuts hatched the ants in the cake. Its too bad, it was our first time coming to this bakery and we were so looking forward to the Date N Nut cake. Too bad as well the Manager could not acknowledge that it was possible that the nuts were rancid, thus the ants. They did say they were sorry that happened. We thought it was too bad we were not offered anything for the $18 we lost on the entire cake. read more

When I moved to ohio, my grandmother bought a datenut cake from Dicks Bakery. It is the best cake i ever tasted the frosting is soooo wounderful too... that was 35 years ago I still get my cakes from them.
