A bit sick of road trip fast food, I decided to stop here on the way home from my Mil's in Ohio. I was reassured by the presence of 3 state police - generally wherever they eat will be delicious! There was a line, but it moved quickly. There are many options on the menu, and they all seem to range around $10. I didn't want any sides (ate too much chex mix in the car, lol), pop, or desserts, so went with a half pound of brisket. It's a little odd that the meat was wrapped in plastic wrap, instead of soaking in juices. However, the woman helping me was pleasant and very good at slicing and chopping the meat, and weighed it perfectly. It was placed on a piece of food paper and then inside a cardboard carton. The guy next to her kept pushing me to buy cookies, which dropped my review down one star. If I decline once, please don't push. I almost walked out because it was too much pushing. Let's go straight to the meat, then. The brisket was juicy and tender. The half pound box came with 3 small tubs of delicious bbq sauce. I tried it with and without sauce, and each was so good! I had to ask for a bag and to go silverware. The interior is kitschy, with metal barn roof walls. I especially liked seeing the rack of wood, because that is some roasting goodness right there. I just had a great dinner. I ordered the Westerner combo at Dickies Barbecue Pit. I had the pulled pork and added jalapeño-cheddar sausage, fantastic. They gave me a choice of barbecue sauces, sweet, original, or spicy. I tried the sweet and it is sweet but not too. The spicy also was not extreme. My son ordered a Giant Baker, baked potato, loaded with meat pulled pork and the jalapeño sausage and it had to weigh at least 2 pounds, I have never seen a potato so big. The service was very professional and knew what they were doing and did it well. Good food. Good service. I want to try the rest of the menu. read more

They didn't have the true selection of side dish options! Only had baked beans and Mac n cheese for sides. Both were disgustingly pasty like they'd been sitting under the heat lamps for days. No operating soda machine. Kitchen looked disgustingly filthy and inoperative! Had some gut issues after eating the little bit of meat we ate. Threw most of our meal out! Should have asked for our money back but we couldn't get out of that place quick enough. Could blame the employees for the poor service and less than desirable end product, but that would be to easy. No, this restaurants poor service and poor food quality falls squarely on the owners. Spicy options, good brisket and sausage. Good side selections. The service is really getting the 5 stars. Food was only 4.85 stars because (-.15 star for Coke freestyle machine [hate]) Manager (maybe owner? Not sure how the franchising works)made up for it. Super kind and helpful. I had a Restaurant.Com gift certificate and decided to give this location a try. I've always loved the one in Kalamazoo, but found this one has an added bonus of a delightful owner. He waited on us, and was a friendly man dressed to the nines. He presented himself nicely as a sharp dressed man, who represented the restaurant well. Where to begin? This place is just plain dirty. From the parking lot, to the glass in the front, to the dining room (and all the junk just sitting around in view of the customers), to the restrooms everything just needs a good clean and scrub. After watching our daughter's tennis march at Trine, we were headed back home and saw an advertisement on the highway, read some Yelp reviews and decided to give it a shot. There were plenty of meat choices ( even for me who can't eat red meat), plentiful sides to choose from and excellent service. The owner reminded us of Robin Williams with his quick wit. He explained everything patiently to anyone who had a question, even came around the counter to chat and check on every customer! The decor inside was pleasant, tin roof, lots of wood, kitschy signs and photos, comfy tables and booths. We chose to share the 3 meat plate, and it had enough food to fill both of our bellies. The meat is served on paper food wrap on a metal tray, and their were 3 bbq saucesto sample. I couldn't eat the beans (they had pork in them), but the cornbread muffin was tasty and the onion straws were the best I've ever had....and the FREE soft serve ice cream cone was the cherry on top! The owner came by again to chat a bit and ask what we thought, then gave us plenty of coupons...bonus!! We will DEFINITELY stpp here again on our way back home from Trine! The only negative I can add is that they offer full size regular plastic drinking cups, and I watched in horror as most customers threw them away. :( We took ours home to reuse and recycle. When a place is empty and the meat carver stands behind the counter rolling her eyes and brandishing knives while you try to decide on how to order, leave! No suggestions, and finally as I ordered the ribs - they were out of brisket! - and my husband ordered sausage, she viciously wrapped the congealed and mangled piece of pulled pork, stating "So you DON'T want the pork?" We never even mentioned it- it was sitting out from the previous party who's already sat with their food. My husband has been here for dinner a few times, and the owner even stopped by and thanked him for his patronage. The old Traeger smoker enticed him in, but we aren't sure where the meat is actually prepared. I hated the meat and the sides, and my husband can eat there if he wants when I'm not traveling with him. He liked the sausage. I would like to consider myself a BBQ aficionado. While I hail from Columbus, Ohio, I have sampled tasty treats from Kansas City, Oahu, Omaha, Austin, Dallas, and Memphis and little known villes in North and South Carolina, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. Low and slow is the way I like to go. With that said when I went to Dickey's everything but the meat was the star of show. Great fresh waffle fries, awesome green beans with bacon, tasty baked beans, and a unique Baked Potato Casserole. Really loved the taste of the green beans. Free ice cream cones were a nice treat. The coke machine that turned out unlimited flavor combinations offers something for everyone. I give this portion of the meal a strong four. We got two, three meat platters so I had a sampling of their pulled pork, sliced beef brisket, sliced turkey, sliced chicken, and ribs. Of the five, I enjoyed the pulled pork as it was sitting in juice and was moist and tender. The rest of our meats were dry and somewhat tough. They were all held in a warmer and I really have to ask how long they were in the warmer and why are they not washing, basting, or soaking them in their juices to keep them moist. Wrapping up portions in the saran wrap is not the way to go. The rolls were somewhat dry, chewey and perhaps a little stale. I give this portion of the meal a low two with the pork saving it from being a potential one. The parking lot, restrooms, and dining room were clean and tidy. The employees were friendly, greeted, said thank you, and seemed to be working hard behind the counter and keeping up with the dining room. The location is easily accesible to the west of I-69 on route 12. I am willing to go back and hope I caught them on a bad day with the meat. If you own a BBQ joint, the meat must be the star of the show. Anything less than your best should be as disappointing to the employees as it is to your customers. The better you do, the better your business will be and the easier it will be to sell. read more
