I grew up going to Dick Church's - whether that was after hitting dawn patrol at Blackie's or post-church services - my family has seen meals under multiple owners. I recently went back after many, many years away and I have to say that the current owners have done a fantastic job of keeping what was always special about the place while updating some of the less-than-stellar things that existed. I think the scaled down menu really does the place justice - because you can still get a Dick's Scramble, but they've kept the menu minimal so everything feels intentional and tastes delicious. It's still diner food, but that's exactly why you're here. The coffee is strong and hot, the eggs are fluffy, and the service is friendly and fantastic. Love the old photos of Costa Mesa everywhere and the outdoor seating for families with pets. Dick's is a staple of CM, and you can tell it will continue to be with this great for years to come. We mostly go for breakfast and the food has always been great. However, we were just there for Father's Day and as expected, it was packed. But come to find out after an hour later, the girl who seats you forgot about us. After being seated, it took another hour for the food to come out. Keep in mind, we ordered everything right when we sat down because we were watching the tables as we were waiting for ours. One thing we observed was how the front door worker was seating people. Party of 4 was seated with three tables. There was room to move the tables apart and seat others who had been waiting but that didn't happen. Found this cute little locals restaurant in Costa Mesa! I have driven by this restaurant many times but never thought anything of it. Then one day it caught my eye and I decided to order some items my family and I might like. My server, Sandy, was the sweetest lady ever! She was very helpful and attentive. The experience could have not been any better! I ordered the cheeseburger, but with no cheese. This place offers a decent burger. The meat patty itself had its own flavor. The fresh cut fries were delicious. I appreciate when people spend time on the side as they are just as important as the main part of the meal! I tried the pancakes and they were nice and fluffy. I think anyone who is a breakfast lover would be pretty satisfied with this breakfast entree. The avocado toast got no complaints. My daughter enjoyed it! Again! Awesome experience. Our server today remembered us from last time (almost a month ago), her name is Madeleine! What an amazing service. The food was delicious, again. Full of flavor, great seasoning, excellent biscuits, and loved the crunchy bacon. I really enjoy the coffee here, why? I don't know, it just taste really good hahaha. This place is popping!!! Visited on Sunday during the SoCal rain. Even the rain didn't keep people away so that should speak for itself. We were seated about 15 min after arrival, which was not bad for the crowd size waiting around to be seated. It's a large place with indoor and outdoor seating (when it's not raining). With a classic decor and vibrant colors, I wasn't sure what to expect. The service was Excellent and the food was good. They have a variety of options to choose from (breakfast classics, sandwiches, etc). Our coffee's were topped off often which kept it hot! I had the American breakfast with house potatoes which included bell peppers & onion, bacon, scrambled eggs and sourdough toast. Overall, flavor was good, potatoes were cooked just right. I wish I would've asked for a little crispy as I like mine crunchy. Overall, everything was tasty! Everyone in my party were pleased with their meal and the service. Meal size is decent. The food and drinks were amazing, the outdoor atmosphere was perfect, and the staff went above and beyond to make all the moms feel special. They handed out hilarious "Moms Love Dick's" shirts and stickers, which had our whole table laughing the entire time . It made the day super memorable and fun for all generations of our family. A really delicious breakfast option in Costa Mesa. I would not really call it a diner because it is a bit more upscale than that. It does have a very 1960s, early 70s vibe to it which I loved. Inside is very large and there are many different rooms with different seating options. They also have indoor and outdoor seating. There's a large free parking lot attached so we were able to find a space a few feet from the door. Our server was extremely polite and everything that we ordered came out faster than expected. They have a very large menu with all sorts of classic dishes on it, but there's enough variety that you will be able to try different items during each visit. I started off with a cup of the Chili and thought it was surprisingly good. It had a very hearty flavor to it, lots of meat, and it was seasoned really well. I also loved that they covered it in onions and overall I really enjoyed it. For my breakfast I chose the Country Fried Steak because I've only heard great things about it. I can confirm it is delicious and I would recommend. It was perfectly crispy, but not overly done, and was fair in size. Hadn't been in for about a year and decided to stop by on Sunday afternoon. The server was friendly and there wasn't a wait time at all (in the past there always was) I was a bit shocked to see us get a table right away. And noticed lots of available tables indoor and outdoor. After placing our orders and receiving the food, it made sense. Unfortunately our party of 4 all ordered a different item from the menu- and all of us were dissatisfied with our meals. I did take pictures, and I'm glad that I did for context. The chicken country fried steak was cold and all breading with no actual chicken. The fact it was cold made it that much worse. The order of French toast was also cold and burnt at the same time! Thin bread and just overall very disappointing. The tuna melt was very greasy and also came out cold. The sweet potato fries - cold and soggy. What is going on?! Why are plates being served cold when it should be hot food. We also ordered a cheeseburger and the fries were dry overcooked and brown and crispy. They looked like fries that had been sitting there all morning. Cold as well...... Overall, today's experience here will be our last. It was a waste of money honestly. I would have much rather spent 70 dollars elsewhere. Norms would have been better. So disappointed. read more

It was a big group of 13 of us on on late Saturday morning and they sat us pretty quickly outdoors-- just had to odor them to set-up the tables and chairs and umbrellas for shade. The staff was really friendly and explained any questions we had about any of the dishes. The food was very tasty, a bit pricey but portions were satisfyingly filling. Parking lot is medium-sized, it was a little full but thankfully found a spot as a family was leaving. Overall great experience! read more

Had a fantastic breakfast here on a weekend trip! My breakfast burrito was great, glad that I followed the waitress's tip to add grilled onions. One of us had the Eastside Scramble which was decent, but I was eyeballing the vegetarian Benedict! If I can make it back here, that's going to be my pick. Really impressed with how many vegetarian options there were! The spicy Bloody Mary was spot on! Also got a hot coffee since we were sitting outside on a chilly morning with the dog. The outdoor patio area was lovely and a bunch of other tables had well behaved dogs. We were there on a Sunday morning around 9 and it looked like there was a pretty full house inside, but you'd never know from the service-- prompt, courteous, friendly, checked in on us several times. I visited this establishment for brunch today to celebrate my birthday, but the experience was deeply insulting. As a customer who expects a standard level of professional courtesy, I was met with subtle racial gatekeeping and a hostile attitude. 1. Intentional Gatekeeping (Seating): The restaurant was active but by no means at capacity. Specifically, the inner room was completely vacant with many empty tables. However, the server intentionally seated me at a noisy, less desirable table. When I requested a quieter spot in the back, she flatly refused, citing "just in case" for large parties. It was only after I stood my ground and insisted that she reluctantly allowed me to sit there. She never once proactively offered a better alternative; I had to fight for basic comfort. 2. Hygiene Violations & "Forced" Apology: The service was negligent and unsanitary. I was served a coffee cup with visible residue. Worse, I witnessed the server handling clean utensils with her bare hands immediately after wiping down other tables. When I confronted her about the dirty cup, she didn't offer a proactive solution. It was only after I demanded a new set with a firm stance--asking, "You didn't do any dishes?"--that she gave a reluctant, forced apology. If I hadn't been vocal, she would have let me dine with dirty equipment. 3. Hostile Demeanor & The "Box" Insult: Throughout the meal, the server engaged in a childish power struggle. While I was clearly still eating with my fork in hand, she approached and asked, "Would you like a box?" This was a blatant attempt to rush me out. To top it off, whenever I raised valid concerns, she made incredulous and condescending facial expressions, acting as if a customer's request for hygiene and quiet was an absurdity. Verdict: The food was acceptable, but the staff's quality is bottom-tier. Went to breakfast there this morning for the first time and was disappointed. They were busy at 8:30 but there were booths available or sit outside. My son and I ordered biscuits and gravy scrambled eggs and I had very crispy bacon. My daughter-in-law had breakfast tacos. I ate one biscuit which are flat Square biscuits and not a whole one just a piece the bacon was fantastic. Bottom line was disappointed will not go back to order again maybe try lunch or dinner but very disappointed in breakfast. Not much flavor. And then the waitress I had words with her because she was too busy paying attention to some customers that walked in that she knew then paying attention to hand me the box and hitting me in the head with it When she swung her arm out never once did she look to see what she was doing when she was bringing me a box and then she gave me their bill and they had just ordered. Dick Church's is the cutest little diner tucked in the middle of Nowhere Land Costa Mesa. The decor is vibrant, loud and I am absolutely here for it. I came for lunch and had myself a little tuna melt ($13). It's a no frills tuna melt with albacore tuna salad, tomato, and cheddar sandwiched between two pieces of grilled sourdough. The tuna salad was excellent with not a ton of concessions - no weird secret ingredients here. Plus the tuna wasn't watery or runny. The sourdough was nice and buttery with just the right amount of toast to keep it from becoming too toasty. All in all, a solid tuna melt. The westside scramble ($15) was an excellent choice as well. It comes with ham, bacon, sausage, bell pepper + cheese with your choice of toast and potatoes. Good ingredients make for a great omelette. I'm intrigued by dinner because I'm sure it's a vibe. I used to frequent DC's 20+ years ago for breakfast meetings. It is conveniently located near the OC Fairgrounds that sit b/t HB and Irvine by SNA. This time it was for lunch after golf w/ my regular crew. I still have the same opinion of DC's that I had 20+ years ago: Its a solid place w/ good prices and great service. I ordered the turkey sandwich on toasted sourdough. You have a lot of options for sides and I chose a salad. I believe DC's also offers bfast all day bc one of my friends had eggs & bacon. The turkey was moist, and the portion was hearty. I was stuffed afterwards. In addition, the salad had nice fresh veggies. Regarding the ambiance, its old skool in here. Based upon the interaction with the staff, I noticed there are a lot of regulars here. Our waitress, Meredith was super nice, friendly and attentive. I paid, and I made sure I gave her a big tip. Under different circumstances, I would've recommended this place for the food alone. Unfortunately, the dining experience was, hands down, the most uncomfortable and unsettling one my family and I have ever had. For context, I'm from an affluent, predominantly white neighborhood, but I've spent my life as the minority in most rooms. I'm no stranger to being the "other" in a space. But this visit went beyond culture shock--it felt like a warning. The moment we walked in, my family and I were met with looks--not the passing glance of curiosity, but the kind of stares people with melanin recognize instantly. Conversations died, heads turned, and the mood shifted. We asked to be seated in the back corner, hoping to avoid the tension, but it was already too late. The only worker with melanin in his skin--a kind, respectful young man who, like us, was Hispanic--took our drink order. He was professional and warm, and truly the only moment during the experience that felt remotely normal. Then our waitress (let's call her "M") approached, introduced herself, and immediately mentioned that they had huevos rancheros available. Now, maybe that was just her way of highlighting a special. But after everything we had already felt and witnessed, it landed like a subtle jab... a not-so-subtle assumption based on who we are. It got worse. Two older white men were seated right next to us, and within minutes they were loudly discussing how "Mexicans are taking over hospitals and jobs," and how glad they were that "Trump is deporting all of them." Their voices weren't hushed--they wanted to be heard. And we heard every word. My children heard every word. And no one--no one--from the staff stepped in. Adding to the tension, my oldest child (who was facing the window) noticed a police car circling the building three times. I don't know what that was about, but in the context of everything else, it felt like we weren't just being watched inside--we were being watched outside too. When it came time to pay, "M" brought over a payment machine that looked like it had been taped together and barely worked. Oddly, we hadn't seen her use that particular machine with any other tables. She stood there while I selected a tip--20%, not because we enjoyed our time, but because I knew tips were shared, and I wanted to make sure the kind young man received his due. After I submitted the payment, she walked off... leaving the machine at the table. It sat there long enough that I had to get up, return it, and let her know. Her response? "I have another one." The newer one we saw her use the rest of the time. So yes--the food was good. But no amount of good food is worth being made to feel like you don't belong. Like your presence is a problem. Like your skin, your culture, your family are unwelcome. We won't be returning. Because dignity, safety, and peace of mind should come standard with any meal. read more

First and foremost, major props to the very friendly and attentive staff. Lindsey was our server, and a terrific one at that, but everyone was super friendly and helpful! My jam is chunky corned beef hash, not that flat weird mush that looks like it came out of a can. I found this place on yelp and so glad I made the drive to go try it. It was perfect and exactly what I wanted. Everything was cooked to perfection and the coffee was flowing. But thanks to Lindsey, who went super out of her way to make sure I could eat the cinnamon roll, I was able to try that and omg it was on point for my sweet tooth. This was a cute little diner and back when we lived in Maryland we owned a diner so it's always nice to check out other diners. I had a patty melt with avocado and it was tasty the fries were good. BUT I ordered a slice of pumpkin pie with whipped cream and this has never ever happened before in a restaurant they heated up the pumpkin pie to make it hot. I didn't realize that until I took my first bite and burnt my mouth. I have never had hot pumpkin pie and I will say I absolutely hated it after the one bite returned it and they gave me a regular piece of pumpkin pie which tasted good. Who would heat a piece of pumpkin pie in the microwave??? It was the cook, trying to ruin your business. You need to teach your cooks what your expectations are. They have a beautiful menu with beautiful staff - and they accommodated to the fact that we were there to kill time, so they catered to us eating the same item - bringing us a separate plate.
