Best custom ice cream cakes in town. Had a small one made for a backyard party and it was delicious!

I've been to Diane's Dairy a couple of times now and I already can't wait to go back. The shop is a bit small, so they could use some structure in keeping lines organized. They have a good number of flavors and options, including a new strawberry patch one. More importantly, they offer pistachio and cherry vanilla, my benchmark for deciding if a place's ice cream is good. Diane's Dairy hits the mark on all spots. The treats are also reasonably priced and competitive for the serving size you get. I noticed during my last visit that they also have some separate boxed gluten-free items for sale like ice cream sandwiches. Outstanding every time we go. But the changing of flavors makes it even better. Just had Christmas sugar cookie and it was life changing. Always friendly people working, very helpful and patient when my nine year old asks for samples. I've had their cakes and they have been great. Omg! This place is a hidden gem- I love the Mint Chip Ice Cream. I'm going to come back and try a few other flavors since it is very rare to find an Ice Cream store that actually makes the Ice Cream themselves as in "Home Made" The negative reviews made me laugh since it is obvious that those customers don't know anything about Ice Cream. Ice cream was super delicious. Incredible, inventive flavors and old favorites. Spoke with Diane for a bit since it was just us, she's lovely and clearly has a ton of pride in her shop (which she should). My husband offhandedly mentioned he loved rocky road and she took it out of the freezer for him (as she rotates flavors). Ingredients are also clearly marked for GF/egg/nut allergies as well. We've been here 2 times, the first time was last June when they had a soft opening, we thought the ice cream was good but not as good as other more established homemade ice cream places such as Lake Hiawatha dairy and Denville dairy so we have not gone back. It's probably because we had to pick boring flavors because we were sharing with the toddler. It's my wife's birthday and we wanted to give this place another try. We got an ice cream cake this time. The thing with ice cream cake, unless you special order, they come in generic vanilla and chocolate flavors. To my surprise, this cake is much better than most other places we have tried. If I am not mistaken, I think their ice cream cake was made from soft serve. The chocolate is much richer than most ice cream cake I've tried. The service was also excellent both times. They offer to write something on the cake and they did an excellent job. The decor is nice and cute. Will probably go back to try other flavors in the summer. read more

I found this ice cream shop on Instagram and knew I had to check it out. The owner was so nice and friendly. I ordered the chocolate/vanilla soft serve with added Oreos and it did not disappoint! I also had the alfajores and strawberry ice cream which were just as good. My favorite one was alfajores on a waffle cone. It was absolutely delicious that I didn't even get a chance to take a pic . Creamy rich homemade ice cream. So many flavors to choose from! Cute location with outside seating and plenty of parking. Nice staff and lots of yummy packaged ice cream treats to take home. I had a scoop of Island coconut and a scoop of Lemon Custard Crumble in a Crispy Waffle Cone...HEAVENLY! Hubby had a scoop of Dirty Dog and a scoop of Diane's Toy Box (I think, lol) and he loved it. My daughter and I live in town and go here a lot. I'd love to recommend a flavor- but the problem is: I like too many of them lol! One time I had a sampling of different flavors that I took home and basically couldn't get enough because they were all so good. Last fall, I especially loved the apple pie flavor. My daughter loves their different oreo variations. The selections are really special. I love it even more because its homemade - and you can really tell the difference. I've also purchased ice cream cakes for my daughter here for the past 2 years - you can pick any flavor ice cream you want for that, instead of the standard vanilla/chocolate!!! And I really love the special designs Diane creates as the cake decorations. Actually, she also did my birthday cake last year and customized it so nicely. One more tip if you're new to Diane's - be sure to check out the fridges in the front for different take home treats which all have really adorable designs. It is really, really nice to have an ice cream place in the neighborhood. And it is good ice cream. I especially like the cookie ice cream sandwiches. Service is not the friendliest which is kind of what I expect at a local ice cream place. I find this especially if I go in during the day to pick up things to bring home. We went in about ten minutes before closing and were out before they even closed but it was very obvious the workers were annoyed and definitely not friendly at all. The dairy is the go to spot for my son and I. They have so many flavors and so accommodating in so many ways (flavors, size of servings, concerns/knowledge of allergies, samples). They are always willing to go above and beyond especially Diane herself... on more than one occasion she personally helped us and all the girls who work the counter are great! I ordered a custom ice cream cake for my sons birthday that exceeded expectations (will order again this year) 10/10 would recommend ... the dole soft serve is my personal fav while my son always loves a vanilla chocolate soft serve swirl with rainbow sprinkles. I'm so happy Diane's Dairy is here. It's great to have Diane's Dairy in the neighborhood. Great ice cream! Great service when you get anyone other Diane. Diane can be colder than her ice cream unfortunately. I complimented her and how much I see her on Montville Moms Facebook group but she wouldn't engage or interact with my daughter and I. She kept a cold face and just answered with single word responses. I will come back with my kids again, but this was not the first time we had a bad experience with her service. I thought the other times were just a bad time to catch her. Hopefully she can appreciate her customers with better interactions. read more

A true dairy delight. Came here on a Saturday in the summer to a lot full of classic cars and some great old tunes. Go look at the homemade ice cream and try not to be impressed; you'll be trying some! Fair prices and a nice place to eat outside. We went to Locanda Vecchia for dinner and stumbled upon Diane's (I hear the Red Barn Restaurant a few doors down is also great). A real treat. read more

Very disappointed in Diane's attitude. I've been in here multiple times and every time she is not very friendly. My daughter is apart of the montville library summer ready program and she got a coupon for a free kiddie ice cream if you buy a medium ice cream. I customer ordered 2 cakes for a total of $76 and when I went to pay for them (with my daughter) I asked if I could use the coupon and get a free kiddie cup. The girl working the register went to ask Diane and she said no. I asked to speak to Diane. When she came out I told her I'm spending over $76 and you can't honor the coupon for the free kiddie cup?! She thought about it for a second and unhappily told the girl "give it to her" and she honored it. I'm very thankful she did but she acts like she is doing ME a favor by giving her business. She does have delicious ice cream but so do many other places and I will be taking my business elsewhere. read more

Went there on Friday and the Ice cream continues to be as good as you are going to find. it's funny, a couple of friends from town were there and they both said that Diane's was tops on their New Jersey list as well. We agreed it really comes down to the passion behind the homemade flavor. Never too sweet or over the top but when you have real homemade blueberry or apple pie being added ; the results speak for themselves and it's worth skipping the restaurant dessert to come here.
