But on trying to make a sale for a new mountain bike (which was logical) one of the staff (not Vinny or Chris) was a little (OK, a lot) condescending and then tried to sell me a bike $100 more than their advertised price and was trying to make me think he was doing me a favor as he was willing to come down $50. So $50 more than their advertised price. And still $100 more than the same model in a frame one size smaller (confused? Yeah, buying a bike should not be confusing). I'm really trying to show my support for local store owners, but I'm not an idiot. I would love to leave a great review for Diamond Cycle but I bought a bike online during the Covid-19 Shut Down period and knowing that they are very busy, gave it about 10 days before trying to call to see if it was ready. I have tried calling dozens of times over the last 10 days or so and the phone is always busy (off the hook?). I will reserve judgement until I am able to get the bike and see how the service is. Yikes - don't trust their mechanics! After deciding I was too lazy to order a new tube, I just dropped off my bike. Well, $89.00 later, the mechanic decided I needed a new tire and it took him "several hours" to true my wheel. (I later found this time for service claim to be fictitious, as I was eavesdropping on a conversation he had with a buddy that seemed to be just bumming around the store.) When I inquired about the cost, the mechanic became defensive, saying, "I don't know! That was ten bikes ago!" (I had recieved a message 1 hour prior that my bike was ready for pick up - that haste for service may explain what went wrong... I immediately hopped on my bike and rode 5 miles home, assuming that 89$ spent should insure my safety - I was terribly wrong, because the mechanic put the WRONG SIZE TIRE ON MY BIKE ANNNND THE TUBE WAS NOT INSERTED CORRECTLY (obvious pinching). Not only is this idiotic, careless, dangerous, it could have cost me a lot more than $89. Fortunately, I got away with walking a few miles home with a flat bike that was worse off than when I went. I will never go back. Bottom line: 1. Bad mechanics 2. Fast - but at a cost to your safety read more

I've had a 20 year old mountain bike for the past 10 - 15 years that was so heavy it kept me from riding. I didn't realize how heavy it was until I picked up my boyfriend's bike to load up for a trip to Vermont. It was at least half the weight of mine! I started looking for a new bike in August, but was not happy with the service I received from other bike stores. Finally in December I visited Diamond Cycle, having remembered that my other biking friends used to swear by them in high school (10 years ago). As soon as I walked in Lou tended to me immediately. He listened to what I was looking for - a new road bike for fitness purposes - and understood that I was a beginner. I'd been taking spin classes but thought it was time for me to actually hit the pavement, although I have very limited experience with bikes. He did not take advantage of the situation. He went through all of my different options from the cheapest bike available to the higher end racing bikes and explained both why I absolutely wouldn't want certain bikes and why others would be suited for my needs. We went through the differences in brand and performance, and he pulled out a few bikes to show me the difference in the weight and frames. I especially appreciated him explaining why I wouldn't want to go for the higher end fitness bikes just yet - it showed that he understood my needs, experience and budget. He gave me information to go home with and think about, including the option to test the bike we'd narrowed down to via rental. A few days later I rented the bike - the Giant 2012 Dash 2 - for the weekend. He fitted the bike to me, got it all tuned up, and set me up with a helmet. The bike was a dream! I ended up purchasing the 2011 Dash 3 after the rental period - on sale for 10% off. In comparison to the price, the nuances in updates were minor enough that I wanted to go with the 3, and Lou agreed. Again the bike was fitted to me as was a brand new helmet. The additional accessories I requested were also mounted for me. The entire staff is very friendly and super helpful. It's clear how much they all love bikes and biking - these people are passionate about what they do - and they try to instill that in their customers. I've come in a few more times with little questions; they continue to assist with the same level of customer service. I admit, I enjoy stopping by the shop. They always ask how the new bike is doing and how my rides have been - they really make you feel appreciated. I've been recommending them to everyone looking for a bike or needing a tune up. As for the riding, even in 30° weather, you can find me on my new bike. I can't stop talking about it, or how great Diamond Cycle is. read more

Before I begin I want to say I am not what one would consider the "target customer" of a bike shop. Why? I don't know how to ride a bike. Actually..I DID NOT know how to ride a bike..until Diamond Cycle. Let me explain. I'm one of those few people who grew up never learning how to ride a bike. So now I'm an adult..and not a young one mind you (40+ years old) & I'm noticing how many people are riding their bikes around. I have always wanted to ride a bike; I spin but I understood at the time the experience of actual "bike riding" is completely different. So..one spring evening I found myself walking up Bloomfield Avenue and walked past Diamond Cycle and figured..what the heck. I marched in there and blurted out to the guy (who I later found out was the owner Craig) that I was interested in bikes but had no idea how to ride one. Without missing a beat he said "Well then you need to learn how to ride". I asked if he knew how I could and 5 min later he gave me the contact info for a place in Montclair that offers bike lessons to adults (yes..there are more like me) and said I could rent a bike for the lesson. 2 weeks later Craig arranged for the bike to be waiting for me at the location where my bike lesson was held. Talk about service. It took me 4 hours to finally get my "pedals" but that day I felt so triumphant..I had learned to ride!!! Of course..I'm wobbly and unsteady but I'm cycling and staying upright. Diamond Cycle was there for me a week later when I walked in and declared I was ready to BUY a bicycle. The people at Diamond are so helpful and knowledgeable and friendly..they never made me feel uncomfortable and were genuinely happy for me becoming the newest member of the cycling community. Craig in particular is very knowledgeable and really took the time to listen to what type of riding I was interested in doing and suggested bikes that would be good for what I planned on doing and what would be convenient for me as far as storage. I walked out of there with a foldable bike, a helmet, riding gloves and a renewed sense of confidence..I can do this! I would've been taken advantage of in a bigger shop but Diamond is the type of place that you are proud to support; it's a cozy neighborhood store that is a true gem due to Craig and his staff always being supportive, knowledgeable and genuinely excited about bringing as many people to the joy and fun of cycling. Diamond Cycle is a family-run, cozy bike store with old-fashioned good customer service. I have been taking my family's bikes there every year for tuneups since I moved to the area in 2005, and they always do a superb job. They diagnose problems clearly and are honest about what needs replacement. One time I wiped out and brought my bike in for a safety checkup, and they did it for me immediately and at no charge since I'd recently gotten my bike tuned up. If you want a great buying experience, go to Diamond when they aren't overrun with customers ( which is often because they are so popular). They will take the time to listen to your needs, your price range and your desires and then show you several bikes. They have great products and good service and stand by what they sell. HORRIBLE. I walked into the store to get my bike repaired [the back wheel had become unaligned when I got into a collision a few days ago, so it would turn 3/4 of the way before stopping because of the brakes]. That was the only thing wrong with it. I figured, shouldn't cost too much to adjust it, especially since the bike was in otherwise good condition. Two weeks prior, I had just gotten my bike fixed for the summer- new brakes, re-oiled the chain, air in tires, the whole bit, at a much better bike store closer to my house. But this being on the way to work and I needed the bike repaired asap, I figured I'd go in. The mechanic didn't listen to me at ALL when I told him what the issue was. You'd think I would know what was wrong with it, being that I just rode it 4 miles up the hill? Nah. Instead, he tried telling me that BOTH wheels were messed up- so messed up, he explained, that I would need to COMPLETELY replace both. Couldn't be repaired, adjusted, nothing. It sounded really odd to me, especially because I had JUST gotten the tune up done 2 weeks before and it had been riding perfectly fine until the collision. And the front wheel worked fine, it was only the back. So he tries telling me that it's going to cost me $50 a WHEEL, PLUS labor. I have 26inch wheels...it does NOT cost that much for a wheel. I could get a wheel on craigslist for $5 if need be. However, I thanked him for his time, and told him that I really didn't need anything new or fancy. As long as it was semi-rideable and could get me places, it was fine. So I'm about to take my bike back, when he starts yanking at the spokes and pulls three of the metal spokes out! He then tells me "see, this wheel needs to be replaced." Well no S***, Sherlock! NOW it needs to be replaced! So I walk out of the store with my now even MORE busted up bike. At least I was able to pedal it before. Now, the wheel wont turn at ALL and I will have to wind up replacing the entire wheel. Somewhere else. Where I'm not going to get charged 10x the amount for 10x the crap. read more

Great place. We had gone to two bicycle shops looking for 26 inch rims for an over 50 year old bicycle. We could have gotten them online, but we wanted to support a local business and I am glad we did. Though the store was crowded they kept checking on everyone. Went today to have my bike tuned, the tech was very helpful. I then asked some information about road bikes and the tech put me with an Asian fellow, worst salesperson ever! I never rode a road bike and wanted to get educated on the different types, I might as of well spoken to a rock. Took my bike from the service and will never be back. Went to Rei in East hanover immediately after and Will from the bike dept gave me 30 mins of his time and educated me properly, and now got my business too. Go see Montclair Bikery or Rei before these lug heads. read more

I went into Diamond about a month ago and asked them to look at my Scott Spark full suspension bike. They just became a Scott dealer and I was excited to work with Diamond (read: spend lots of money there). I've been riding mtb for 20 years and I take care of this bike but I don't do suspension work. I spoke with Vince, the owner, who said, "Yes, we'll look at that suspension." Great, I thought. I didn't ask for what followed. He then proceeded to put my bike on a stand and basically tell me the gears, the brakes, the chain, etc., were worn. I thanked him and told him that I realize this because I RIDE my bike. A lot. Im not a poseur. I told him I fix my own bike but I don't do suspension. If you rode 150 miles a month, you know your bike is never perfect. NEVER. That wasn't good enough for Vince, who decided to lecture me for a good ten minutes about how unsafe my bike was. I tried explaining, arguing with him; but Vince was a moral freight train. What he should have said was "Hey, bike shops have a tough time of it. Spend your money here." I do support local bike shops but I don't want to support people who don't listen. I stopped paying for lectures after college. While I waited (no phone call telling me the bike was ready) for three weeks for a small part swap, I went out and purchased a brandy new Scott Scale 740 from a shop in CT. I was gonna talk to Diamond about a new Scott, but I was so turned off by Vince's hard sell that I will never set foot in that shop again. You never know who you're talking to ... read more

Craig and team are absolutely wonderful. I was looking for a new road bike and Craig took his time to make sure I found the one that was perfect for me. I tried on and test rode a couple of bikes at the shop. Craig was incredibly patient....I never once felt pressured to buy. I wasn't totally sold on either bike I tried at first, but found one online I liked. Craig tracked it down for me at another shop and drove to pick it up and take it back to Diamond. When I went back to Diamond to pick it up, he took his time with the fitting - measuring and adjusting things ever so slightly to make sure it was PERFECT. He made sure I understood exactly how to clip in/out, shift gears, etc. Craig and team really got me excited about my purchase. When you're spending over $2K on a bike, you want to know it was exactly the right one and that you know how to care for it. Im a proud bike mom thanks to Craig and will gladly go back in the future for tune-ups and clinics. It's very telling that there were so many folks in and out of the shop while I was there that Craig and team knew well. read more

I recently bought a Cannondale Synapse Carbon bike from Diamond Cylce. Diamond Cycle, an authorized Cannondale dealer, built the bike incorrectly causing me to visit bike shops 7 times for fixes on my brand new rather expensive bike. One of the errors made was to the construction of the headset which could have broken the frame or caused serious injury to me. Other errors include brake cables improperly installed, a chain that was too long, shifter cables improperly installed, and incorrect torque on bolts requiring specific torque for safety and performance. Craig, the owner of Diamond Cycle, was unapologetic and has yet to respond to a detailed email that includes photos of the bad build. This is exceedingly poor customer service. If you're an experienced cyclist in the market for a high end bike, this is not the shop for you! read more

Craig was super helpful and helped me choose a bike that fit my price range and needs. No upselling, which was great! Lots of very helpful advice. Also gave me a great deal on a bike rack. The store is clean and well organized, and the staff all seems knowledgeable and friendly. I hit five local bicycle shops in one day to shop around and figure out what I wanted and where to buy it, and Diamond Cycle was the most helpful by far. My wife and I casually walked into the shop just to take a look around. Since we just bought our first home, moving out of our 1 bedroom apartment - we thought we could finally make good on getting some bikes. Although we weren't going to buy anything at the moment, that quickly changed once we began speaking with Craig. He was very welcoming; and knowledgeable about all things cycling. He took time to learn of our needs and accurately matched us up with bikes that would fit our lifestyle. Now I must admit, I am not a spendthrift; and I definitely gawked at paying $760 for 2 bikes - with Walmart selling them at $150 each. However, I've also learned that you get what you pay for. And knowing that we would be getting a great bike and great service, we made our purchase. Craig even helped us get our bikes home by lending us a bike rack. Where else can you get this level of service? And to top it all off, he even invited us to their Sunday ride alongs. I just had a bad experience with this shop. I went in to get my bike tuned and they kept trying to sell me more things to "fix" my bike. I spent a decent amount of money on maintenance (new brake pads, new rear tire) and when I got it home the front brakes were all out of alignment. Very amateurish service. Been going to Daiamond for many years buying a couple mtn bikes and all my kids bikes there. There is nobody better in my opinion. They dont just try to sell you any bike to make the quick buck . They take the time to make sure you are getting what is right for you. Lou is the best bike mechanic I have seen.
