I'm so excited! And I just can't hide it! I'm about to loose control and I think I like it! Seriously! I felt like dancing around the fruit and veggie section singing this song at full volume when I saw the selection and the prices! I was very tempted to grab a banana as my microphone and sing my praises on top of a fruit crate but good social grace took over and I kept my mouth shut. :0) Now let me tell you why I had the dancing urge and no it's not because I'm a dancing fiend. 1. CHEAP. So stinkin' cheap people! Here's a little taste of how cheap. 5 ears of corn for $1. Two orange peppers for 1.45! 5 bananas for .59 cents! A giant tomato for 25 cents! Blueberries for 1.65! Strawberries for the same! A beautiful seedless cucumber for 99 cents! Fuji apples-huge and cheap for Fuji apples keep in mind, 60 cents for a giant apple. My cloth grocery bag was stuffed to the brim (I've got a sore back to prove it) and everything was under 10.50!! SO excited! 2. The quality. I can't say much about the meat section (I don't eat meat) but the quality of the fruits and veggies are great! I don't agree with the person that said that the fruit etc from here will become ripe extremely fast-I've got plums and peaches and pears from my first visit (more than a week ago) that still aren't quite ripe. You just have to be choosy when picking your produce, don't get a brown banana and expect it to last another week people! :0) Not that they have brown bananas there...actually most of them were quite green during my visit today. 3. Spices! Holy Moly! The spices (the bagged kind in the produce section) are SUPER cheap!! I love that I finally found a place that won't rip me off when it comes to my love for spices. Thank you! 4. They take credit cards. Thanks, otherwise I would have missed out on all the yummy goodness today. 5. It's within walking distance! Hurrah! And for those of you who aren't close, no worries, they've got parking! What what! 6. Open till 10 pm! Overall, just producetastic! Ok, so that word doesn't really work, but Devon Market does! Yes, there are probably other places that are just as cheap and maybe cheaper on some items, but prices are always changing at every fruit market. So Devon probably has some of your other markets beat in some items too! So at the very least, switch it up from time to time and stop on in to Devon's! There's going to be a farmers market across the street, so you can comparison shop too! I will be visiting again soon! This is a great store when you are looking for produce or cheeses/deli items. The produce definitely better than Dominick's or Jewel. It is fresh, better quality and lasts much longer than produce from the stores mentioned earlier. The prices are considerably less. 0.99 cents for a pound of peaches vs. 3.99 at Dominick's, 0.89 cents for pears vs. 2.99 etc. You get the idea. If you like your fruits and veggies you can save a bundle. The deli selection is a little limited but there is still plenty to choose from. The store can be be a little difficult to navigate due to the narrow isles and tends to get congested. Cashiers are quick. Overall, great for produce and deli items. read more

I have a huge appreciation of Devon Market. The first thing I noticed were the wines (like Scott K.): where else can you get not only Bulgarian, but Moldovan, Serbian, Romanian, and Ukranian sweet and dry wines and even champagnes, ports and cherry wines (that one's Croatian, actually)? Ok, how about Austrian reds? Try Devon. Then I noticed the fruits and veggies - the regular stuff is very cheap (avocados are my fave buy here). Though they don't normally carry bitter melon (sorry Rachel D. - maybe you noticed that they don't have a huge Asian clientele - that's further west on Devon!), they do carry unusual products you can't get at Dominick's: Asian eggplants, baby bok choy, rapini, tomatillos... Then I got into the baked goods. Someone mentioned the Bosnian bread - big round loaves of chewy white bread, often fresh out of the oven. The french bread, though, is some of the best I've had in Chicago, especially when it's fresh (like piping in your hands and fogging up the plastic in the bag). Their other speciality breads include Italian and various whole grain or Euro styles. But the best are their turnovers - cherry, apple, and almond are all very cheap but rich and delicious! And after about five visits I realized that the checkout at Devon is always quick - much quicker in most cases than the local Dominick's - granted the store is cramped (see below) and they have to keep a lot of clerks on hand to keep customers moving so they don't clog the aisles, but it's a big incentive to shopping here. The East Europe import aisle has lots of wonders - 2 lb jars of acacia honey, many different kinds of canned fish, ajvar and other salads in jars, whole grain buckwheat and other grains, multiple brands of Turkish coffee and European chocolates. I also want to add in defense of the fish department that I have never had bad fish here - and the selection is not huge but it has items you can't get elsewhere, like squid and octopus by the pound, whole lake trout or salmon, and king fish (in the freezer section). The meats I can't comment on because I don't eat them. On the negative side: the aisles are tiny and pushing a cart through them, especially if you have children and / or it's crowded can be a real pain! And the selection for staple foods (cereal, pasta, baking supplies) is often not as good as a Jewel or Dominick's. But overall this is a fantastic store and every time I go there I find something new I haven't tried or even noticed: Bulgarian feta cheese! Bulk chickpeas! Pickled whole cabbage leaves! Yes, four stars does denote "Yay! I'm a fan" status, however, I still shudder whenever I walk into this store. Maybe because it's dirty, maybe because I saw a mouse dart across the toiletries aisle by the deodorant, maybe I prefer Jewel cleanliness or just straight up dirt from a garden/farm...but dont' mix the two. Anyway, yes, Devon Market has wonderful Aldi-like prices on everything but juice and olive oil, and shrimp. Try their fresh bread, it's wonderful. Their produce section is a dream- a mix of home and something new. Seasonings and ingredients for all my Mexican dishes and favorite snacks from life abroad. Parking sucks, but at least they have it. If you have a problem or complaint, the owner could care less about you. Recently, I noticed a very unsanitary procedure behind the deli counter. I witnessed one unprotected hand grabbing pieces of food from a tray being prepared at the same time by another co-worker for the general display counter. Disgusting, took a picture and reported this place to the city of Chicago. The counter girl's 4 inches of hair hung over the food as her saliva fingers kept mopping up the food into her mouth... NO LIE! She wanted her picture deleted but I refused as she was in a public place and I had every right to keep the picture as proof. After witnessing this, in combination with the owner's, I couldn't care less approach to my concerns when I tried to reach him.... NO return calls! .... I filed my complaint and vowed never to walk in here again. I wouldn't send my dog in here to eat if this is how unsanitary this place is. Eat here at your own risk.... read more

I've been frequenting Devon Market for about six years now, and my has it changed. Listen up children: I am about to take you on a trip into the past, when all the checkers were either recently arrived Eastern European and African women, all of whom were utterly clueless about what that plastic thingy people put on the conveyor belt was supposed to be for. (I always had to be alert or they would reach over the divider and grab the next person's groceries and begin scanning them too. This would necessitate one of the burly management guys coming over, using their key in the register, and cussing the checker out. Fun once, but it got old after that.) This was a time in which they did not sell alcohol at all, and the only concession to health was a few containers of generic yogurt. I don't miss those days, to be perfectly honest. It's much better now. I get to pick up cheap and gross meat like lamb's heads and cow tongues (...for the dog) as well as fancy pizzas and Tofutti. An all-around best. AH MAZ ING....truly amazing.... This place is a fantastic little fruit/veggie place, with a couple of extra perks. So I used to live up this way...way, way, way back when...however, I still do the drive up here at least once a month for the cheap ass produce that is fantastic quality. They have everything imaginable in the areas of veggies...you need it...they have it. Seriously, all kind of dark, leafy greens, squash, jicama, celery, herbs, etc. Not to mention...the prices CANT be beat. And the quality of the produce is PHENOMENAL...seriously, I have checked out Stanley's (boo, everything is almost ready to go bad, but cheap prices) and the market on Morse (again, more expensive and not as great as quality). Red peppers are $1.49 per pound...green peppers $99/lb....the list is too extensive to Yelp about. They also have a variety of fruits! Tons of apples, pears, oranges, berries, grapes, etc...and YUP, you guessed it...they are CHEAP!!!! They have a little section of herbs which is fantastic and cheap. They have a section of nuts, candy, dried fruits, etc. Totally reasonable in price They have a deli counter with lots of meats (although I have to admit, I dont buy this from here) They recently added a FRESH SUSHI fridge...YUMMY! With cheap-o seaweed salad...YES PLEASE! They have fantastic deals on cheeses...give me some FETA! YES! And the hidden gem that I found on my own...they have this amazing bread, by the check out....its round, buttery, still warm and probably a thousand calories and fat. I dont know if they make it here...I LOVE IT. It is so good, I could dream about it. I have to admit, I cant buy it anymore because I eat the whole thing...sad I know. But that is it, I dont do other grocery shopping here...I honestly just stay around the perimeter of the store. I rarely go down the isles, but they have some great ethnic dips, candies, cookies that I get every once in awhile. Fantastic roasted red pepper spread...yes, I slathered this all over the big ass round loaf of bread that I devoured. I think it is a little creepy though that every cashier is a semi-decent looking woman. Devon Market that caters to mainly Eastern Europeans. Here we see a lot of the same fruit and vegetables. They have a wide variety of wines form Eastern European countries such as Romania. The great thing about this market is the freshly baked bread. As you start to approach the bread section, the scent of freshly baked bread begs you to take a look. I really needed some items that are impossible to find in regular US stores but I usually am able to find at Devon Market (though Fresh Farms in Niles has become my go to place for everything except it was too far to drive to last night). First off, many of the items I picked up had expired dates. I was hoping to get the Jalapeño Laughing Cow cheese but the expiration date had already passed two months ago! Several other items, same thing but what really set me off was what happened at the register. Right after putting everything on the belt, the young lady took hand sanitizer and started to rub it on her feet. I looked at her in disbelief. She smiled and stared to ring up my groceries. I asked her, "Did you just rub sanitizer on your feet?" She said yes and acted like this was just the most normal thing to do. I stopped her and told her that I did not want her to touch all of my groceries after she just rubbed her feet and that she should wash her hands but she saw nothing wrong with what she did even telling me that it is 'sanitizer' and that she and her hands are clean. I don't know. I was so disappointed when I left there, I probably will only go back if I have a 'European Crisis' where I need food from back home otherwise, I will stock up at Fresh Farms from now on. read more

This place is known for their Balkan bread. Which makes it an awesome place if you're in the business of eating bread. If not, then it's really just your average neighborhood market. I am conflicted about Devon Market. I want to like it. I mean, really, I do. It is too close to my home not to like it. And if I start making dinner and realize I'm out of olive oil or red pepper flake, this place is right down the street with what I need. But my love for this place does not extend much farther than the moderate convenience. After a year of shopping at the Morse Fresh Market, a store that seems a fraction of the size, I have become accustomed to certain modern ammenities. Gluten-free foods, for one. You know the type that imitates gluten-ous foods? You will find little of this at Devon Market. For gluten-free crackers or pastas, it is now most convenient to go to Whole Foods on my way home from work. Whole Foods should never be considered the most convenient option. For anything. But yeah, sure, this place is a market. Perhaps it was too much to hope that they would stock Glutino crackers. Oh. The produce is fine. Okay selection, sedated employees, prices vary widely, and layout is extremely confusing. Yes, the deli is in the back, the veggies and fruits are around the edges and dairy is on the opposite end of the store from produce. Other than that, I have no idea where to find things consistently. I cannot discern any type of logical layout for all of the food NOT on the edges. Want all of the chips in the same place? Nope. Think snacks should all be in one aisle? Nope. I have been here at least fifty times. Prices: Some stuff is cheap other things not so much. Just keep an eye out. The employees here are what brings down the store rating down the most. Except for the security dude, who is always helpful and friendly, the people who work here cannot be dragged into helping you. Pleas for help often get futile pointing---with rolling of eyes if you ask for anything beyond pointing. Employees never smile and consciously avoid eye contact. Even the checkout people can barely begrudge a small cold "hello"; let alone a "hello" with any warmth behind it. I frequently come here with a bemused look on my face thanks to the confusing layout; I have never heard a hello or been asked for help. Sad. Several of the reviewers have noticed that this place isn't clean. I have to agree. I am not a neat freak. I am of the "What doesn't kill me makes me stronger" school when it comes to germs. However, this is a place that sells food, not a home depot. Would it really be that much to ask an employee to windex some shelves once in a while? I'm not even asking for dusting. This is my neighborhood grocery store and I love it. In a world filled with mega-chain, over priced options for grocery shopping, the Devon Market is a sanctuary from my childhood. Fresh, seasonal veggies that aren't over priced, an *actual butcher counter where they actually butcher stuff*, bread baked in-store, a full deli counter and staff which is helpful, friendly and greet me by name when I walk in the door; Devon Market is how grocery stores should be - local, personal and affordable. I know some people have claimed to have other experiences at this neighborhood grocery store, but I've been shopping at Devon Market for the entire six months since I moved into Rogers Park and I've never seen the staff be anything other than helpful and respectful... even to a woman I watched the manager catch in the act of shoplifting a bottle of wine. He was patient, albeit firm, but still completely respectful. I -personally- find it hard to believe some of the other reviews I've read about this place... I say that as a person who stops into the market three or four times per week. read more

When you should go here: 1) You are going to buy a lot of produce and use it right away. 2) The BAKERY--You've got to try their cheese bread! 3) You would like to buy random international food at bargain prices (their international chocolate section is to die for--MILKA'S, RITTERSPORTS, and Kinderuberaschungseier. 4) Staples like milk, eggs, etc. 5) Beer prices are competitive. Anyway, I finally tried Devon Market and holy shit, this is where I am going exclusively for produce. The (as my friend calls it) DOMINICKS OF MY DISPAIR can suck it. This place has a HUGE produce section that's super tasty and a fraction of the cost of Dominicks. It's a smaller store than most of the chains, but it had everything we needed. I also like that it had Sriracha. I love the Sriracha. Chimney Cake Island is also across the street, which offers tasty treats before/after shopping. read more

I'm a big fan of Devon Market and not just because it's close to my house. They have a great produce selection that's full of unusual items. Sure, not every piece of food is fresh, but if you're a careful shopper you can find some good deals. (Checking expiration dates will take you far.) As others have said, they have lots of different ethnic foods. They also have a full deli and butcher counter. It doesn't have the wide brand choice that Jewel has, but it's much cheaper and does similar "10 for 10" sales. EDITED 8/26/07: The owners recently made some great changes to the market. They added all new freezers in the previously lacking frozen section. They have a huge selection of frozen stuff now, including Amy's organic dishes and other hard to find items. They also cleaned up their produce areas. Everything just looks a little neater and cleaner with the same great prices. The improvements bump them up to five stars for me. read more

So happy we just moved closer to Devon! My friend introduced us to Devon Market in the summer and we used to drive to get there because the deals are so fabulous...now it's even better because we moved walking distance :) Anyway, to make this short Devon ha great produce at extremely cheap prices. I got peaches for 10cent a piece this summer!!!!! Huge bags of any spice you can think of for less than $2. Fresh baked bread every hour that is AMAZING. Also, all kinds of yummy imported chocolate that is usually on sale. The Dorina is my fav and regularly $1.29 and well worth it! The Deli is also worth visiting. The people working back there are really friendly and helpful. My boyfriend came back all excited the other day because one of the women gave him a bunch of pieces of cheese to taste and then weighed the cheese he was buying and put the price sticker on before adding a bunch more to the pile to sweeten the deal. read more

I'm becoming a big fan of D.M. I especially like the cookie aisle and love the Greek chocolate wafers for $1.00! Yummo. There's also a Mexican bakery department that puts the actual bakery up the street to shame. $1.00 for two lovely cherry or apple turnovers delicately laced with sugary and flakey dough. The breads are delish as are the tortas - you can buy 7 pastries here for the price of one at the competitor up the road -- your kids will love you for it :) read more

I just discovered this place five days ago and I've been there twice. It's similar to my beloved Harvest Time on Lawrence Ave. Cheap meat. I bought some delish veal kidneys and liver. Yes, I know I eat offal. I'm awful for eating offal but Andrew Zimmern would be so proud. Despite having a ton of food allergies, I'm actually an adventurous eater and this store is so up my ally. Lots of cheap produce and seafood too. I bought a bag of mussels for $3.99! Spaghetti Squash was pretty cheap too. They have a lot of foreign wine. I'm so curious about all the serbian red wine and especially the pomegranate wine. I had a pom wine once at the Chicago Dinner that was awesome. My advice for the foodies out there, on Friday nights eat at Uncommon Ground nearby, shop the Farmer's market from 4-8 and then do the rest of your shopping at Devon Market on your way home. read more

It being super close to me, it saddens me that I can't get myself to buy fresh produce from them anymore. Although they have a great selection of European and foreign goods, their bread and produce are often expired, often even moldy. It is unfortunate that they can't seem to manage these goods in an appropriate fashion because otherwise I think the store is ran very well. This isn't a huge supermarket, but it's big enough. What I like best about the store is (1) The produce is good, and they have a higher proportion of floor space given over to fresh stuff than many stores, plus with good prices. (2)The staff is friendly, while behaving exactly like real people: the checkers and the deli people especially. (3) There's a pretty good selection of ethnic food: Hispanic and central European (the owners or managers are Bosnian Ithink, and about half the above-mentioned staff is Eastern European), and some Oriental. They have a fair selection of low- to mid-range wine and beer, including lots of brands from Romania, Croatia, Hungary, Poland, etc. Their wine prices are reasonable; their liquor prices are high. Feb 2016: The store has gone somewhat downhill in the last six months or so. There has been a fair amount of personnel turnover, and the new people are less friendly and, mostly, less knowledgeable: in particular the security guy as you come in - Pete is gone now, had been a fixture for many years, knew every nook of the store, and was very helpful. The new guy is OK I guess, but brusque and of course doesn't know the store well. In case the owners read this: in the winter your checkout people are freezing, because the cold air comes in from the front door constantly opening of course. They've been wearing scarves and sweaters and some of them even gloves and coats. It might cost a bit, but how about a bit of forced air heating for them? read more

Been meanin to update my review. There's been some nice improvements. Now there's a juice bar in there, the raw meats have come down in price a tad bit. I don't see the arrogance of owner(s) anymore. Just a cashier or two that isn't polite but click on "ignore" sequence & we're all good. Again this is not the kind of place to do major grocery shopping. But when you don't feel like driving anywhere (if you have wheels to do so) & you need only a few items, it doesn't hurt to stop by here. Prices are affordable. Meat quality is good. Bakery stuff is REALLY good (better than I last remember). For some reason now the store has a nice amount of character.
