My family has been shopping here since the early 2000s. Pros: Many Eastern European/Balkan product selections. There's a great Balkan wine selection, an entire aisle dedicated to various goods from the region. Many cheese, sausage, and sweets selections of Eastern European/Balkan origin. Prices (at least pre-pandemic) were ok. Small Local Business - Unlike other nearby major chains in the neighborhood (Target, Whole Foods Market, Aldi). Produce - sometimes there can be good finds. Cons: Store is super crammed and aisles are tight. Store is not the cleanest. It is also in need of a remodel. It's old and dingy. I never shop the meat or deli counters because they dont seem to be the cleanest. Produce section is hit or miss. Sometimes you can find some fresh produce and other times there's nothing to pick up in this section because it's picked through, wilted, or moldy. Customer Service/Cashiers are all rude. Think of it as if you were in an Eastern European country. Major attitude alert, no smiles, no small talk, which can be very offputting if you are not used to this type of behavior. There's a customer service tower from which the store overlords look down onto the aisles, shoppers and employees. Beware: check the expiration dates on everything. Often they will have out of date items still on the shelves or items that are soon coming out of date on a super sale to entice you to buy them. If you don't plan on using the product right away, beware of this tactic. read more

This store is great for fruits and vegetables, various international drinks and foods. But the one the I could not get past was their meat department. I purchased ground beef last week and made hamburgers. I almost took a bite into my burger, but I noticed something on my plate, I thought something fell from the ceiling. I looked closer and it turns out it was a maggot. I was incredibly disgusted, I immediately threw out all the meats from this store. I haven't been there since. If you're going to buy meat here, please look thru it and investigate it thoroughly. I haven't had the stomach to go back there again. read more

I vote Devon Market is hands-down the best market and best team in Chicago. The homemade guacamole is to die for. They always have delicious fresh produce, often local and at great prices, and the dairy section is also incredible with all sorts of special Amish butters and humanely raised eggs. They have my favorite mozzarella pearls that are impossible to find, and all sorts of yummy prepared foods, and every time I order I end up discovering some delightful item like "sugar plums" or "lita squash" that I didn't even know existed. As others have mentioned, they also have a fascinating array of international foods and European goodies that I honestly don't even understand, but appreciate! To top it off, the team is amazing. One time they forgot one item in my order, and the manager personally drove all the way back to my apartment (and voluntarily climbed the walk-up which no delivery person will ever do), late at night and right before closing, to deliver it to me himself. He even added in a complimentary cheesecake that was probably the highlight of my entire quarantine. I lived almost my whole life in New York City so I'm really spoiled when it comes to markets, but Devon Market is like New York food meets Midwestern niceness. I love this place! Sander bumpy cake, tons of foreign to America treats it's like World Market married Treasure Island and this is the baby they had. I almost hesitate to brag to hard for fear of more people enjoying this gem. We have had nothing but friendly service from the employees and love exploring the random new taste treats they provide like stobi flips & cock flavored soup. It's a great neighborhood grocery store without the high prices and pretentiousness of Whole Foods...which I also love. If you don't like Devon Market, it's you, not them. This place is an incredible disappointment. It's a block from my house, yet I elect to walk blocks farther to other stores usually. The staff is generally unfriendly, the meat department has an undeniable smell, and I'm really curious as to how there are no current 2020 reviews that I can find. Especially considering their prices have skyrocketed during the pandemic and I'm sure the neighborhood can't be happy about that. The only reason to visit here is convenience. read more

Very disappointed ..... I have been shopping at this local market since moving to Chicago in September. I will say that their produce is among the best I have found, and usually reasonably priced. As a cancer survivor, I have lungs that are somewhat compromised due to Chemo. On March 12, before the shelter in place order, I purchased a BOX of 50 breathing masks from them for $45.96. This was high, given that a box is usually about $25, but given the situation and lack of availability elsewhere, I paid it. They had plenty in both blue and pink colors and would only sell in box of 50. I have been giving away some to neighbors and Yesterday I called to purchase more boxes (10) to give away to local hospitals and care workers. The woman I spoke with said they had plenty, but that they were no longer selling them by the box, but rather at $2.99 PER MASK.!!! OUTRAGEOUS!!!! This puts it at $150 per box when, a week ago, it was 1/3 that amount. THEN, as others mention in other reviews, their bottled water prices have SKYROCKETED. Do they really think consumers and neighbors deserve this type of treatment? I will no longer patronize this business and I encourage you to do the same. I have filed a complaint with the Illinois Consumer Complaint department. read more

Inexpensive and excellent grocery store, a first-rate delight. I drive seven miles to shop here, from Logan Square. Part ethnobotanical show for the kids, part Trader Jovan's parallel universe grocery experience, but with much better produce and a real butcher (than Trader Joe's)! Random highlights: outstanding fruit and vegetable selection (e.g. celery root, pitaya), and baked goods. It is a great source of a number of hard-to-find smoked meats. One could say I came for the veggies, and stayed for the sausage. In addition, they have killer supplies of excellent yogurt (if you, like me, think that the "Greek" yogurt craze--what with all the thickeners and garbage is WAY over the top), kaymak, and regional classics like burek, frozen and refrigerated. Mostly Balkan, and Baltic items, but with an assortment of commonly found N.American/C. American stuff. They have this mashed whole-wheat dessert in plastic cups in the fridge section. Delectable. I can't believe this is not a foodie rage. Finally, when the coronavirus made us all lose our minds and hog all the toilet paper, these guys still had it, and it was reasonably priced. Example experience: I once spent 45 minutes trying to read jam labels in Cyrillic and then googling the fruits. (How do I know it was 45 minutes? I have one of those beautiful but impatient time-keeper wives. And yes, I'm one of those husbands...) Overall, five stars with a special gold wreath! P. S. Everything I go for is here and it's fresh. I've never had an issue with the produce. The meat and cheese selection in the deli is absolutely amazing. The butcher shop is also great. The beef short ribs are among my favorites. Theres a very large selection of other meats you will not find at the local Jewel or Mariano's either, like goat. They're always baking fresh bread too. Parking is plentiful and the service is great. The store is a little tight but they definitely pack in value. read more

Amazing options for European items. I mean, how many types of serbian sausages, raw honey, ajvar, and burek do you need? Doesn't matter, you'll find it here. Fantastic, well-priced selection of produce. The store isn't huge so it doesn't carry every last obscure item. But honey tangerines still on the vine? Check. There are items on my regular shopping list I can't find anywhere else but Devon Market. Like coarse sea salt, and a giant slab of local Amish butter. And homemade pelmeni, yum! They also carry a surprisingly decent selection of wines. Takes some time to sort through them b/c the aisles are narrow, but so what. Love grabbing a warm, fresh-from-the-oven spinach or cheese pie for a quick bite. Highly recommended for everyday shopping as well as poking around for interesting, imported items. read more

I have been coming to Devon Market for close to 10 years. My boyfriend introduced me to this store. He is from Bosnia and they have many Eastern European foods to choose from. Good selection of fresh fruits and veggies. Plenty of meats. I really love their bread selection as it is always fresh and straight out the oven /maybe I have been lucky/. You will find all kinds of sweets. They have products from my country /Poland/ as well. They also have a really good juice bar. Prices ore not super low but reasonable. I would recommend this store. My new neighborhood market! I'm new to the area, and I stopped in one day while I was running errands on Devon (UPS, post office) just to grab a few items. When I walked in, I was mesmerized by the collection of Middle Eastern, European, and Mexican cheeses. I decided right then that I would return promptly with hubby in tow so he could pick out some of his favorite soft cheeses from his area of origin (the Middle East). When I came back with him, we bought the cheeses (of course, much more than he wanted to spend because of how cheap it is back home, but less expensive than some of the other places around here). We also grabbed a bunch of produce (ginger, parsley, peaches), and I was delighted to find a sale on Revolution -- $7.99 instead of the $9.99 for a six-pack it usually is. I'm excited to check out their wine selection next time based on some of the other reviews I've read here, and I'm so happy that my hubby can have his cheese, so I'll be back a lot. Find them wrapped and stacked just ahead of the cashiers inside Devon Mkt, and at 10:30 in the morning everyday (including holidays) they're fresh out of the oven with a store-filling aroma that proves it, irresistible. I live in Uptown, closer to Andersonville, and have Jewel, Mariano's, Edgewater Produce, and some small convenience stores within walking distance. Devon Market is my go-to store, approximately two miles away from my home, and in the spring and fall, I walk there by 11:00 on Saturdays. I am especially fond of their deli and prepared foods selection. The customer service I have received from this department is the best. I've spoken to the woman who I think is their main chef and she is accommodating to us, the customers. I love their chicken salad, salsas & chunky guacamole, turkey wraps, fresh produce, and Bosnian bread. Their butchers and the guys who work in produce are nice, too. Devon Market's prices are just about the same as other grocery stores. I also like the fact that by me shopping there, I am helping a small business survive during this unprecedented time. read more

This is not a one-stop shop like Mariano's. You can expect high prices on cooking oils, baking goods, and dairy products, but that's mostly true of any little neighborhood/ethnic market, so you have to know how to shop. Check their weekly ad--which is always promptly posted on their website--for some killer deals, like $1.29/lb on boneless/skinless chicken breasts and $0.29/lb for yellow onions. Their produce is fresh (not as dazzling and expansive as Edgewater Produce/Harvestime, but certainly better than Jewel) and cheap, and I love their selection of filler-less, old-world breads made by local bakeries. I buy a lot of poultry, beef, and deli products and never have issues with freshness, although I'm one of those crazy (read: crazy-smart) people who smells every piece of meat before purchasing. You'll become one if you know what's good for you. Aside from the ice cream, most of the freezer items (and prices) suck, so proceed with caution. And if you're into the kind of guacamole that's spicy and super-chunky with onion and tomato, grab a hearty tub of their homemade stuff for $6.99 and go nuts. read more

This place is racist, read on... So I was at the checkout and these 2 Chinese men in front of me wanted to buy 8 bags of Riceland Rice. The cashier rang it up as $14.99 a bag. The men looked puzzled, pointed, shook their heads, because they didn't speak English. Then a manager guy came over, looked up and down, and just laid down the law saying this rice isn't on sale! Then I spoke up and said isn't it this rice, pictured in your newspaper ad here, for $8.99 a bag? He looked at the ad, hesitated, and then yelled across 3 lanes to the security booth for a price verification. Kristin, the lady in the booth, kind of shrugged her shoulders and then nodded. He then turned to the cahsier and said they are allowed to buy 3 bags only. Any more than 3 will be at $14.99! I'm looking at the ad and it clearly said no limit! I didn't want to cause a scene or pick a battle because it wasn't my battle so I let it go. But I did call out to one of the Chinese guys in Chinese before they left and acknowledged to them that the "gwhy loh" or white man was bullying you. He responded with his head sorta down, in Chinese, with a "yeah, I know" but what can you do? I felt horrible for a week after that exchange. And have not been to Devon Market since. read more

I really needed some items that are impossible to find in regular US stores but I usually am able to find at Devon Market (though Fresh Farms in Niles has become my go to place for everything except it was too far to drive to last night). First off, many of the items I picked up had expired dates. I was hoping to get the Jalapeño Laughing Cow cheese but the expiration date had already passed two months ago! Several other items, same thing but what really set me off was what happened at the register. Right after putting everything on the belt, the young lady took hand sanitizer and started to rub it on her feet. I looked at her in disbelief. She smiled and stared to ring up my groceries. I asked her, "Did you just rub sanitizer on your feet?" She said yes and acted like this was just the most normal thing to do. I stopped her and told her that I did not want her to touch all of my groceries after she just rubbed her feet and that she should wash her hands but she saw nothing wrong with what she did even telling me that it is 'sanitizer' and that she and her hands are clean. I don't know. I was so disappointed when I left there, I probably will only go back if I have a 'European Crisis' where I need food from back home otherwise, I will stock up at Fresh Farms from now on. read more

Back when I used to live on the North side of town, Devon Market was my go-to when I needed something fast and fresh. They have high quality produce and carry different ethnic foods. Their meat selection is diverse and of great quality. The prices are competitive with what is in the area. Some of their middle aisle products are a bit pricey, but again, they are key in a pinch. I like that they are a mid sized grocer. I had Dominick's close by, but was never satisfied with what I found there. I also had the rinky dink grocers nearby, but those were iffy at best. What to do when you're near Loyola, heading to BYO resto Pizza Art Cafe and need to grab some wine? You go to Devon Market, that's what you do! A friend of mine swears by their collection of fantastic Balkan wines (and on the cheap, natch!). A bottle of Vranac from Bosnia (90 points) goes for only $6.99, and a super dry red from Croatian that I love will only set you back a ten spot. Sweet salvation, indeed. They also have a decent selection of beer, though stay away from domestic 'faux craft' types such as Blue Moon which is overpriced at $9.99 for a sixer (usually $8-9 at most other places). What else is good? Oh, LOTS! The produce and spices are fresh and cheap, and you can also source a pretty expansive variety of Eastern Euro meats here. There's an entire aisle dedicated to all things Euro by the way... think soup bases, puddings, several types of ajvar (roasted red pepper and eggplant spread), jellies (like rosehip) and other hearty condiments. Don't forget to peruse the bread section near the check-out lanes: French bread, Bosnian bread, and several types of rolls and loaves. If you're lucky it will still be warm! Huge parking lot. And they do take credit/debit cards despite that 'mom and pop' feel. No cash back, but they do have an ATM. read more

Back in the day (ok, not that long ago) I used to live this far north. Shocking, I know...but there were quite a few advantages. One of them happened to be Devon Market, a mere hop, skip and a jump from my spacious, cheap apartment. Ah, those were the days. Anyway, yes Devon Market is a gem, a great little shop to get just about anything you could want to consume. Plus, the closest Jewel is ridiculously crazy and the Domnick's is lackluster, at best. (Both on Broadway). Devon Market was our go-to place for homemade pizza ingredients, impromptu baking sessions (never panned out all that well, but fun nonetheless). It's clean and the prices are low...they have an adequate parking lot, and there are lots of pretty happy families in the neighborhood coming and going. A real community spot, slice of happy life. So...I'm not a clean-freak. A bit of dirt is a part of life, and I'm fine with that. Except, I went here for the first time a few days ago. And in one particular part of the store--not even a back wall or anything, but more where two rows of shelves met in the center--I smelled the distinct smell of pee. I thought for a while maybe for whatever reason the whole store might smell like that (sometimes small stores have weird smells), but it turned out to be just that one place, like it was fresh. Not anywhere near a produce counter or fish counter or other source of potentially odd smells. That made me pause and think. What could make a grocery store smell like pee right by the produce and dry goods section? And not near any bathroom I could see? My first thought was, "Oh, they must let a cat patrol or something at night. It's a city, there's probably mice and rats and that's what cats are supposed to do as working animals: control rodents." I'm actually ok with this. But the more I thought about it, I realized with our modern health code cats likely aren't allowed either, and the store was dingy enough that while I'm cool with a patrolling cat, you should also be using other measures too. And a good cat shouldn't pee outside of their box. (I know they do, particularly males, but I'd think if you were using a cat as rodent patrol, you'd replace it until you found one that didn't do that in a food store.) And I don't know if it was cat pee. It could be rat pee. Or mouse. Or heck, human. My nose isn't exactly an expert on determining species from the smell of pee. So experiencing this really bothers me, particularly inside a grocery store. I've been to Edgewater Produce and Skokie's Marketplace on Oakton, both of which ALSO specialize in fresh produce and/or ethnic foods. Neither have ever smelled of pee. I've never smelled pee in any of the big chain stores either. I think I won't be coming back here. Even though they're the first store I've seen which has something like the cream horns I used to be able to get as a kid from Eagle in the suburbs. But the smell of fresh pee is a bit much for me. read more

I've heard so many positive comments about Devon Market that I just had to check it out. I'm sorry to say that I left sorely disappointed. First, we had a little difficulty actually getting in to the store. The entrance was blocked by little old ladies, a man trying to get a newspaper, and various sale items. They could really benefit from a little rearranging. Next, the prices weren't as good as I had expected. Yes, some prices were less than Dominick's, but really it felt like the basics were priced at convenience store prices, while the fruits and veggies were priced lower than Dominicks, but still higher than the Rogers Park Fruit Market. Sorry, Devon Market, but I'll be sticking with Rogers Park Fruit Market in the future. You are just too congested and disorganized, and not nearly cheap enough to make it worth my time. read more

I believe in second and third chances- for people and places. Sometimes, not often, but sometimes, you get a positive out of it- and once in a GREAT, LONG, UNEXPECTED, REALLY, REALLY, LONG TIME, you get a WINNER! Devon Market is one of those Winners- for me at least. We are talking big winner type- WINNER, WINNER- CHICKEN DINNER!!! You see, my first and second trips to Devon Market, spread over a couple of years were not too enticing. I was under the impression that it carried a sort of well, horrid, foul, rancid smell. I would mention this to people when they would start reciting the incredible wonders of this place. They would in turn, give me the look. You know the look. The "What the hell are you talking about ?" look. You may be familiar with it. I certainly am. This caused me to question my sense of smell. Soon after, I lost this sense. Yup. I was down to have four senses, sometimes 4.25 as I would get a whiff of things occasionally. Flash forward to the present. When my mother visits me, she frequents Devon Market. I would question her about THE SMELL. And- as always- THE LOOK would come into play. Today, I ventured back in. I would not say that my olfactory sense is working full tilt. It is still radically under performing, however, not a whiff of anything. And if my white glove cleanliness testing mother smells nothing- Nada- not a smattering or iota of scent off- I trust her. I am glad I followed her back in. OH THE DEALS THEY HAVE!~~ Dole strawberries- 2 for 3$- why yes, I would like some. Blackberries- 2 for 4$- yeah- I will take a couple pints Tomatoes on the vine- load me up Asparagus- small, teeny, tiny little stems- oh yeah, please The meat department also had some nice looking cuts. OMG! I religiously check the Devon Market ads for the specials and get many of them. In fact, it is how I plan my meals. Today I bought "pickles" which are really just smaller cucs and tomatoes, for $.10 each. Then I got some boneless, skinless chicken breasts for $1.49! I now have around 30 palm-sized portions in the freezer, ready to broil and make many different types of dishes with. Another favorite is their fresh-cut Pico de Gallo salsa. Yum! You can put it on anything! I love to fold a little into an omelette. Every time I go into this store I find something new. Today, I bought the fresh baked "Balkan" bread. I just knew it would be tasty. I walked 4 blocks home and it was STILL HOT! I put some butter on a slice and ascended into baked heaven! If heaven has bread, and I hope they do, this is what it must taste like. It looks like a regular loaf of bread, but much, much bigger. I think I like it even better than the fresh baked extra-long baguette, which they were out of today. I can make everything with this bread, from sandwiches, to Texas toast, to French toast . . . garlic bread. I think this is gonna be my go-to bread from now on! Devon Market made me smile when we walked in! So much good food everywhere. Large butcher and HUGE produce section. With HUGE produce. Seriously. The first tomato I picked up wouldn't have fit in the pot we were using to boil it in. Freshly made tortillas. Great beer selection. Things your normal Dominicks or Jewel wouldn't carry. Do I agree this store has cheap produce and meats? Yes. Do I agree it's convenient? Yes. Do I want to support local stores? Yes. But the staff that work the registers are so very, very rude. My skin crawls as I get closer to the check out and I just pray the person in front of me isn't using a Link card because I know they'll be treated like dirt. I mean, I thought they couldn't get much ruder than they were to me until I witnessed that behavior multiple times. I couldn't take it anymore and stopped going there. Eh. I want very badly to like this place, but I just can't wholeheartedly say I do. I think it's largely that the Devon Market is about the same distance from me as Edgewater Produce, and there's just no way it can compare. Is it cheap? Yes. Are there awesomely delicious Mexican sodas? Of course. Did I get a pound of feta for $2 at one point? Yep. The boyfriend and I find it greatly amusing that the Lord High Master Manager of the store has a towering platform upon which to overlook his peons and large grocery kingdom. So why the dislike? Every time I've been to the Devon Market, the produce has made me kind of wary. It's well-priced, I'll give you that, and I will concede that I've only shopped here a few times, so maybe I've just had bad luck, but the pickings are just not very fresh. It's one thing that the overpriced crap at Dominick's is comparatively better in quality, but when it takes me the same amount of time to get to Edgewater Produce, which has better looking produce and meat that's around the same price, I can't justify going here. Devon Market does have a lot of cool stuff, and oh god, the feta selection, but it's definitely a place I'll only be going occasionally. If I lived closer to it, I'd probably like it a lot more. Overall, it's not that bad, definitely has some really cool stuff and great deals, but isn't the best thing ever.
