It's ok. I've stopped by a few times, and their produce tends to be ripe to overripe. Prices for most things tend to be a little higher than the Jewel across the street. I love stores like this, but I always feel like I'm paying a slight premium because they don't get the price breaks the larger stores get. read more

I stumbled upon this little grocery about 2 years ago and have kept coming back ever since for my weekly grocery needs- Love Love Love it! I always spend between $ 106-110 buying six to seven meat entrees specials along with fresh fruits and fresh vegetables and bread and cereal for myself and my two adult children. I do not often buy the household products as they are a premium but the food specials truly are special! This approach saved me 30-40% as my weekly bill at Jewel would consistently be $30-$40 more on any given week. Selection is limited here, but stick to the specials and you'll do great! read more

I love that this is a locally owned business. Produce is very good. Not Harvest Time good by a long shot, but good. That said, I don't shop there anymore. Outside of produce the food is only ok. It's like a C-list version of Harvest Time. No matter what I'm looking for, I always ended up running across the street for something from Jewel, and if you ask for something the staffers treat you like a moron. Speaking of ... More importantly, everyone who works there is extremely dismissive to outright rude. It's like they don't care about getting your business in the middle of a pandemic. I mean just be friendly. People working at the counters are the worst. They snap at you. I mean the counter people at Jewel across the street (and all the other Jewel workers) seem like angels compared to the people at Edgewater Produce, and we're talking about people who work at Jewel. Not much better are basically everyone else who works there. I gave up on them this week. I can just go to Jewel, get everything I could have gotten at Edgewater, and be treated relatively nicely. Affordable FRESH FRESH FRESH. The best produce section of any store I have been to in Chicago. Speaking of fresh and affordable, you HAVE TO CHECK OUT THE SALE PRODUCE. For two bucks, I got two heads of broccoli and a head of lettuce, as well as about 9 banana, poblano, and green peppers. See photo! Nice staff! Get the queso crema and the chicharron and carnitas in the deli. Last time I went, he carnitas were unfortunately very very dry, and inedible :( It was a Friday around 7pm. But this was only once. Great neighborhood gem for produce and groceries in general. Yes, they don't have everything your conglomerate stores stock, but that's because this isn't that type of store, it's a neighborhood family owned market. Read some negative reviews about the staffs demeanor but I found them to be very helpful and friendly, not over the top doting which I'm so very okay with since I came to ship not network or make friends for life, just stopped in to pick up a few things I needed. That said, I did have to run across to Jewel, and realized I spent about the same amount at both stores but came out with several bags from this store and a half full bag from Jewel, sooo there's that. read more

The store is small and it got good products inside. I was glad that the store is opened when I needed to buy something at almost 9 pm. It is super convenient and I thought I will have to go to another place for the thing I needed and luckily, I found them. It is clean and bright and the staff in there was friendly. I got everything I needed which are all available inside. They got nice selection of products that you may also see on a grocery store. The great thing about them is they have a fresh selection of variety of produce and the prices are literally better and cheaper. I've been here twice now since moving to Chicago and the prices are by far some of the best I've seen anywhere. Produce is fresh, prices on chicken breasts and other meats are really good, and the employees are polite and receptive. It is by far my favorite grocery in the Andersonville area, and it's quite close to home. I'll keep looking forward to going here! read more

Great little store with fresh produce and some unique items that are a much better value than Whole Foods, canned capers for example, and corn meal for polenta. The produce is sooooo good and fresh! Picked up some cilantro, plantains and avocados, as well as some shiitake mushrooms. This place has been out of my rotation but now that my gym is down the street I will be a regular again. read more

Scores huge points for having prices on produce that are way, way, way (get the point?) lower than Dominick's or Jewel. Also, love the selection of authentic Mexican products that you won't find at the big chains. I'm an explorer, so I like to try new things like hot sauces or chips/snack that English isnt the primary language on the packaging. Fun fun and yum yum. Now to the downside - some of the procuce, while super cheap, just tastes a bit 'off.' Some of the green grapes, a lot of the apples. Just off, or different tasting, and not different in a good way. Have learned through trial & error what to buy there (granny smith or red delicious apples,, strawberries, limes, watermelon, pineapple, oranges, and almost any veggies) and what not to (most of the other apples, green grapes), so definately supplement my Jewel stops with an occasional produce run to Edgewater Produce. read more

You cannot get everything here BUT the prices are amazing for what you can get! For a quick meal I highly recommend their cooked chicken, fresh corn tortillas, house made salsas and guac. You'll find me in here nearly every week, so I'm not sure why I'm only now writing a review! This is my go-to place for fresh produce to keep my kitchen well stocked and my dinner guests raving. With the exception of my recent New Year's fiasco of trying to hunt down black-eyed peas, they also have a fantastic assortment of dried and canned goods. If you're looking for nuts, trail mix, or some other snack food, check out their bulk selection packed in plastic clamshell containers. How about good queso? The refrigerated section is chock full of it. The deli counter also has great deals on a variety of meats and cheeses. The store is fairly well organized and kept clean. I haven't had many problems with discovering bad food, except for the occasional icky strawberry buried in the middle of the pack, but I expect that sometimes, no matter where I shop. Unlike other places, I don't have to dig through the piles of produce to find just a few good pieces of fruit or veggies. Almost everything is of high quality and looks fresh. My wallet is thankful that I make this a regular stop. I can easily walk out with 2 or 3 bags full of groceries and barely hit the $20 mark. I rarely have to set foot in the big J across the street, which keeps me sane. So go here and go often. I'll meet you by the tomatillos! read more

If the employees here don't know me by name now, they will soon. I can't get over how inexpensive Edgewater Produce is! Their produce is fresh and well stocked. They have dry goods as well, but not a huge selection. I can't say too much about the meat, as I have only purchased their chicken--it looked good, was cheap and didn't disappoint me. Like everyone else has said, you can get a lot for your money here. I will never be going to the big, over-priced store across the street for produce again! I usually shop at HarvesTime, which is Edgewater Produce's sibling, but I was in the area after another fabulous brunch at M Henry and stopped in to pick up a few items for dinner. It's clean, well-organized, and cheap; just as I'd expect. The produce selection is bountiful, but not as bountiful as HarvesTime. Their dairy section seems truncated as well; they didn't have a few items I regularly find at HT. One thing I do love is that they sell ripe, ready-to-eat avocadoes. Perfect for making that spur-of-the-moment guacamole or putting in a salad. I can't imagine why anyone would buy produce from the neighboring Jewel when this treasure trove of delights awaits you. read more

Tongue is called "tongue" because it's a tongue. This is often lost on those who eat it when they are little and even on those who enjoy it - - until they realize what it is. I've written here about tongue in various contexts as a delicacy among many cultures, and it sure is in my experience. This weekend Edgewater was selling beef tongue for $2.89 lb. I bought a tongue; brought it home, and cooked it on Sunday morning, which was the next best thing to a seance with my grandmothers. I boiled this baby for three hours and was able to make my home smell just like those wonderful days as a kid when I would enter my grandmothers' homes and would always know if we were having tongue for dinner because the smell was soooo luscious. That is a pretty amazing fact considering we just elected Obama, he is not yet in office, and the economy has been circling the drain for the past year. One of my favorite things to do is take a long stroll down Clark from my apartment through Andersonville, window shop, people watch, pet puppies, kiss babies, and carry non-disposable tote bags into Edgewater Produce to pick up one large cucumber, 3 lemons, 4 granny apples, a package of cherry tomatoes, and a bag of carrots, walk out roughly $10 lighter and repeat the long window-shopping/people-watching/puppy-petting/baby-kissing stroll back home. This is exactly why I love the 60640. And while I cannot get everything here that I can get at the larger grocers in the area, I can get the healthy things here, and that's all I should really be eating anyway. ** Interesting Fact: Edgewater produce is required by federal law to play Sade twice an hour. ** When I moved to Chicago, this was my produce market. I liked shopping here, and thought it was the bomb. Then I moved to Rogers Park, and quit shopping here. Cuz I'm lazy like that. Now I am back in the 'hood, and I am much less infatuated with Edgewater Produce. To the point, it has been disappointing me lately. I think this is for two reasons: 1. Piatto Pronto moved in, and I no longer have a reason to buy cheese or deli meat at Edgewater Produce. 2. They have crappy broccoli. And I really like broccoli. Edgewater still has its positives: cheap and abundant produce. The chicken. Bulk gummi candies. The deli counter is still above average. Excellent service. Close to my place. How have I not reviewed Edgewater Produce yet? I love Edgewater Produce. As does everyone else who has reviewed this place. First things first: don't expect Whole Foods. Or Lincolnwood Produce. This is a small, family run, 2 room grocery store. It's clean, but has obviously seen many winters. You enter into the main store, which has general groceries and the butcher shop. To the right is a second room, with the produce. The selection is great. Again, keep in mind that the store is small, so they don't have everything under the sun. But what they have is fresh and very well priced. The store caters to a Mexican clientele, so in addition to the standard offerings, expect tomatillos, a good variety of peppers (hot and sweet), and unusual items such as nopalitos (cactus pads). The selection changes with the seasons, but that guarantees that what you're getting is at its peak. I haven't bought any meat here, but the quality and selection seems to have improved over the years. When I first started coming here, some of the meat seemed sort of dicey, but that may just be xenophobia. If you're looking for beef feet, this is the place. But lately they seem to have expanded their offerings (more fish) and their storage practices. Their used to be an off odor in the butcher area, but that is long gone. read more

I love this place! For a girl is is trying to eat more healthy, this place makes it smart and uncostly to do so. One week I only had $8 in my pocket until payday and need some food to tide my over. Was able to get food --produce-- for a a week and a half. One thing I love about this place is the $1.50 bundle deals. They really help keep my tummy in check for lunch items for work. I come here just for those. While I know there are Jewel and Dom close to me, I will walk and come here for produce for now on. I am not only glad to support this place, but I feel good about supporting a local shop than the place across the street. That;s what this economy needs more of-- local people helping local people. This place rocks. While they dont have the square footage that their sister store "Harvest Time "has in Lincoln Square, they have an ample selection of items . Their prices on produce are almost always lower then the Jewel across the street, and the quality is far superior. The deli has a varied selection of Boar's Head, as well as some bulk smoked items such as bacon and pork chops. Decent selection of cheeses from the usual suspects to 5-6 varieties of feta. Small selection of both domestic and imported grocery items, bulk nuts & fruits, and a packaged meat case The best part of Edgewater Produce is the staff. This is the little neighborhood store where everyone from the management to the shelf stockers and cashiers treat you like you're part of the family . I'm really glad they are in my hood. read more

Mission: save money on produce Places tried: Whole Foods (gets me into trouble), Jewel (disgusting), Strack and Van Til (almost more disgusting than Jewel, Stanley's (YES, but just a bit too far some days...) I needed something close by and a place where I felt I could go in and get what I wanted without having to feel like I should put something back in lieu of another item. I mean I wanted to go ape-shit crazy buying produce. I wanted a salad that was LOADED for lunch, and I'm tired of paying almost $3 for one avocado! MISSION ACCOMPLISHED. Edgewater Produce. Either a slight walk from the Bryn Mawr Red Line or the #22 drops you off right outside at Catalpa. This far north of Andersonville, the parking looked plentiful as well. Also, they give you a .25 refund for the meter so their register signs said. I got lettuce, spinach, tomatillos, jalapenos, carrots, cucumber, red pepper (HUGE), apples, oranges, bananas and god knows what else....for *drum roll* $16!!! I rewarded my spending with some chocolate covered pretzels. The line for the butcher was quite long, so I didn't get a chance to look in there...next time though! And if I don't feel like making the trek to Stanley's at least I have another option now. read more

Awesome spot for produce! Fresh and cheap. Occasionally they have organic varieties, but very occasionally. I can leave with four bags of produce and fruit for $15! You can't beat that. Best to shop for in season items, out of season the price goes up and the and quality goes down, but that's the story everywhere, right? Oh the guilt I feel when I park in the Jewel lot & wander over to this haven of fresh produce. Okay, I do not feel that guilty since I go to Jewel on the same trip. Edgewater Produce offers such an array of fresh produce--that is kicks Jewel's not so little bootay. The price is right (stuff there is about 1/2 the amount Jewel charges), the options are many, and the quality is excellent. For some reason their stuff just looks better as well--for instance the cilantro tends to smell fresher than their counterpart across the street. There is also lots of love for a place where you can your spice on--lots of ethnic spices. The only complaints I would have, is that it is small so navigating a cart can be treacherous and the check out women (I have never seen a guy doing the check out counter) look at you like you are wasting their time. Would it kill them to maybe smile at you? Or not spend the whole time chatting in Spanish to their friend as they are ringing you out? Personally, the Spanish does not bother me as I can understand it, but I have seen others be put out by that. read more

Good Grief. We usually start our grocery shopping here and "we'll go to Jewel for the stuff they don't have here." But then, we get so much great stuff, we rarely actually end up going to Jewel. And seriously, let's compare the produce at Jewel to that of Edgewater Produce. I'm laughing now, cause I just imagined such a side-by-side comparison. Edgewater Produce has never let me down. They only stock the best, freshest produce in town and their prices are rock bottom cheap. Their fruit is always ripe and delicious and their herbs are fresh. They don't stock anything that didn't have a good crop, so if the quality wasn't there you might not find what you need that day. Their mangoes and avocados are the best. Not to mention their meat! Phenomenal prices on fresh meat that's extremely high quality. Don't waste your money at Jewel when you need some chicken - Edgewater is the place to go. Staff is always busy, but they'll take the time to point out what you need when you ask. read more

You do get a lot here for little money. I got Italian Prune Plums here, when I couldn't find them anywhere else, for my homemade Plum jam and it was 99 cents a lb. They also have Coca-Cola in a glass bottle, with real sugar. This store is very clean and the staff is very friendly. read more

No problem with the produce, but today they had a sale on pork shoulder. Stopped in and there was one in the display case. Unfortunately the wrapping was wrecked. "Juice" all over the tray, and a huge part of the plastic wrapping was torn away leaving a spot about the size of a baseball open to the air. This area was clearly dried out and discolored so it wasn't recent. I asked the meat counter attendant if they had other pork shoulders. He said there was one in the case that was ready to buy. I told him that there was a torn wrapper and it was exposed to the air. He took that one out of the case and went to the back to "check for more." Miraculously they had one. Freshly wrapped, looking great, that was the exact same weight and price. It also had a huge discolored spot clearly visible through the plastic that was the exact size AND shape of the spot on the roast I had JUST alerted him to. Obviously, he lied and pretended to look for a new one and just rewrapped the bad one with no regard for sanitation. Ended up going to another store and paying more for the meat (almost double) but at least I know I'm getting a safe product. Don't cut costs at the expense of food safety, Edgewater Produce! You won't see me in there again for a very long time. read more

I miss good produce. Growing up in California spoiled me rotten (or not rotten as the case may be) in regards to cheap, fresh produce that tastes as if it's just been plucked from the vine/ground/tree/stalk/whatever. So I am inordinately pleased to discover a produce store (within walking distance) that stocks cheap, fresh, tasty produce. And let's not even discuss how much cheaper a good avocado is here than it is anywhere else in the city. My only qualm is that their serrano chiles are severely lacking in spice (when will we ever learn that when it comes to chiles, smaller is almost ALWAYS better) but that's a grievance I hold with nearly every produce store in this city (La Casa del Pueblo in Pilsen being the only exception thus far). And when I stupidly left my wallet at home on a recent excursion, they very nicely held my bag of groceries for me while I ran home to retrieve it. read more
