Please don't get me wrong, generally speaking, I ADORE Aldi. When I lived in Massachusetts I would regularly drive 30 minutes one way to get to Aldi. Thus, imagine my excitement when I moved to Chicago and Aldi was on my block. While this will probably remain my main grocery store, as far as the other Aldi's I've been to are concerned, it's not great. Not terrible, not bad, just not as amazing as I've come to know and love. The main reason for my disappointment is that they're not well stocked. First, there are some empty shelves, and while this isn't completely unexpected, the number of them is rather surprising. Second, this Aldi doesn't have the wonderful Aldi finds that aren't groceries. The aisle with seasonal decor, small appliances, and even occasionally furniture would be the first I'd visit. However, these are sorely missing from this location. However, this may be because this is a smaller format store (kind of like one encounters with Target). Otherwise, while you'd have to defer to Reddit for people's favorite and least favorite products, Aldi had a wide assortment of great products at reasonable prices, and some very respectable private labels (generic brands). read more

Here I am thinking I'm going to have a regular grocery shopping trip on a Sunday as I do every Sunday for the past 3 years. I've gotten to know the staff pretty well. But as a much as there are some staff who are great there are the ones who ruin it for the rest. As im waiting in line I notice how short staffed they are. Which is fine. I understand. I put my groceries onto the belt and greet my cashier. No response. I get it no offense taken. The cashier proceeds to throw my groceries into my cart carelessly. My milk being crushed by the pressure of the pack of waters I have. The salad bag popping open from the pressure. The ice cream carton bursting through the seal. And my coke falling out the plastic from how hard she threw it into the cart. Now I understand they're busy. But that also doesn't mean to become disrespectful. I had ran and grabbed a last minute item taking no longer than 50seconds MAX. To which she says "PAY NOW. PAY NOW. PAY NOW. I DONT CARE. PAY." I tell her the attitude isn't necessary and the grocery's being thrown aren't either. To which she then tells me to "DONT EVER COME BACK" along with a slur. I have never been disrespected this badly in any business. I had to ask for the manager .. Matthew. He was sweet and took his time to listen to my concerns. But even then I was never issued an apology from the cashier herself. She had glasses. Piercings. And split dyed hair. I never gotten her name... I think I'm going to have to cut my ties with the business unfortunately. read more

This place is always been a bit on the down side but the cherry on top happened today. I bought heavy cream two days ago and opened it for the first time this morning only to find out that the heavy cream is incredibly thick (almost like sour cream) and curdled. Things like that can happen. So I go back asking the lady at the register if I can just get an exchange for a different one only for her to argue with me that "heavy cream is always thick". Like seriously? I told her that it's usually not like that and also that heavy cream usually doesn't come curdled like cottage cheese. Yet she kept arguing. Thanks Mrs. V. The Aldi no-frills model means limited staff who have to multitask constantly - and the best overall prices for good quality food in town. I can walk to this store so I buy what I can from them and have for 8+ years. The biggest limitation is the small size of this store, so they dropped the Aldi Finds non-grocery items. Fo those who drive, free parking upstairs with an elevator is a plus. I bring my own folding mini-cart to bypass the chronic shortage of carts and baskets They're still struggling with rolling post-pandemic shortages, as most stores are. But, the quality of their meat, fresh fruit and vegetables they have remains excellent. Canned goods and snacks are low priced and decent too. Frozen items vary in quality. Frozen steamed veggies are uniformly good values and tasty - but lately, unavailable for weeks at a time. Tip: shop on rainy/snowing days when most locals stay home and you'll zip thru the checkout line. On nice days - particularly when delivery shoppers are crowding the place, snapping up all the products, and clogging checkout lines with overloaded carts - it can be a hassle. (Also, a testimony to the good values here.) I go out of my way to be nice to the harried staff, and with very few exceptions they respond in a friendly manner. I also tap my credit card as soon as the cashier scans my first item, so the line moves faster for those behind me. If you want a huge selection of items in a quiet, spacious store, Whole Foods is a few blocks away. If a little inconvenience doesn't bother you, in return for good quality at a very good price, give this place a try! read more

The shelves here are frequently needing restocking. They are understaffed. They are undersupplied, items not on the shelves for many days. Items are not getting to the store, when they do arrive you see pallets of items not being put on shelves because workers, usually 2 and rarely 3, are working the checkouts. They are understaffed. This location had better support just a few years ago. The reason that the shelves are often now empty is because of the new warehouse system. I was told this by the manager of this location over a year and a half ago. Still, really? You can't be sure you will find what you need. Even with these issues, I like this Aldi. The people that work there are very busy but often have a kind word for customers. This tiny Aldi is always busy and needs more staff and support from corporate. read more

This is one of my go to Aldi for when the weather is bad or I need to pick up something quick on the way home from getting my hair done What I like about this location is the parking...it is inside, so in bad weather, I can walk from my car to the store. I also like that I find items here that are sometimes out of the ordinary, like the lobster and crab raviolis I found by chance (lobster is all gone because I bought all of them). The meat and produce selections are solid, but like at Jewel and Mariano's, you have to check it. The artisan lettuce I get here is the same that is at Mariano's but cheaper. Big pork fan and I know I will always find it here - center loins pre-packaged with marinades (peppercorn, teriyaki, etc). I also like the beef selections (country ribs, stew meat, beef for Stroganoff, etc.). And I am happy to say that they have brought back the sausage pizzas. Not sure why, but for a while Aldi got rid of the sausage pizzas and I was forced to make my own using their cheese pizza as a base. I love these pizzas....throw a little Italian seasoning on them and they are great as a quick snack. This is a very small location, but I have to assume it has to do with whatever was allocated to them when the apartment building went up. I personally don't mind as I can hit it and quit it when I am there. But be warned, the carts are big and you will have to squeeze by or wait for folks if you are in the first two aisles, which seem the narrowest. Again folks ask me why I shop at Aldi since I am not a "poor" person. It has nothing to do with income for me and all about getting what I want at a low price but maintaining that quality. A lot of Aldi's products are great and as my girl Erika G. said, I know a lot of folks in the restaurant & catering industry that shop at Aldi...this is why I use them for parties :-) If it works for the professionals, it works for me. read more

Love the food and stock here But I had the nastiest taste in my Mouth after shopping right now, Firstly there was no baskets by the door, ALL of them on the opposite side, whatever I'll go get it But it wasn't until then checkout process when I saw this lady with micro braids just chillen doing nothing but eating a box of pizza scrolling through ugly dresses that she frankly doesn't have the body for, just chillen while the cashiers shoulder she was hovering over had to continuously bang on his converter belt just to get it to work was stressing to do his job. Not all ALDIs created equal I guess. This the worst one in the city. I unfortunately had the luck of going there for the first and last time this week. Messy, wet... water everywhere. Most importantly, very unusually above average rude unprofessional staff. I was standing in line waiting for my turn to be checked... I was told to move to the next to be opened line... so i did, but when I started loading my stuff... the cashier left to do what ever and left me there hanging while the other line progressed forward. When she finally came back, she asked the people behind me to skip me and checked them first without asking me or even seem remorseful about it... it was like a big fuck you... very disrespectful.... I am not against letting people with less stuff go ahead, but I think she should ah e asked if that is ok... but I guess we are shit to her... worth nothing. When my turn came in she yield at me for not clarifying if I am paying with cache or card (although I already scanned my card) she yield again when I was slow to respond to her question of I needed bags. This store sucks. The management sucks. The thing people sucks. Won't come back here again. Every other Aldi is way way better. I would definitely recommend if looking for organic produce! The prices are fair for the most part (considering inflation). The store didn't have 100% of the organic products I was looking for though (no organic limes, no organic oranges, no organic grapefruit) but they had the basics like pineapples, apples, organic spinach and organic pears. I like Aldi's a lot. Great products good choices not overwhelming and always never past date. My Aldi's is a great one. Hubert the cashier at the 6221 Broadway Chicago store is exceptional. Every time I come into the store I notice how exceptionally friendly he is to every customer. It's a hard business in difficult times and Hubert still manages to make you smile. Cashiers have got to be trained to be more grateful and have a better attitude all the way around. I know it is a challenging gig for sure but if does not suit you go in to something else that perhaps does not deal with the public. Watch your prices and check your receipt here as well. I'd been told for years "Go, shop at Aldi!" Did I listen? No. I could have been saving money all this time?! First thing that grabs me is the vegetable chips, that usually sell for $3-5 a bag, for . . . .89. That's 89 CENTS. You can't even get a mini bag of standard potato chips for that. And they are goooooood. I steered clear of the prepared stuff, the mac n' cheese, canned soup, frozen dinners - crap like that. I've just cut it out of my diet. But if you like that sort of thing, it's really cheap. I stuck to the staples. Condiments (their mustard is great!!!), pickles, flour, spices, hot sauce (tastes just like Frank's Red Hot). Almond milk is at least a few dollars less than at most groceries. A few things were cheaper than the other stores, but not cheap enough to go way out of my way. But if I'm there, hell yes, I'll pick these up. Eggs, some cheeses, coffee. Produce: I got some REALLY nice lettuce. I love lettuce, and yeah, it's a weird thing to like, but there you have it. Also their tomatoes looked good. Not a tremendous, exotic selection of produce (Oh, no starfruit. Damn.), but for the standard stuff you can eat every day this is the place to go. I'll go back for the hamburger, canned tomatoes, paper products. Pro tip: real, working chefs shop there. Don't be a snob. read more

Ok, so I've been in other Aldis in the city and found them cramped, overcrowded and generally not the most pleasant shopping experience. I realize you don't go shopping at Aldi for an upscale grocery shopping experience, but the last thing I want to do with my limited free time is to deal with a maddening store while trying to pick up some discount groceries. However, this brand new Aldi location in the first floor of a condo building might just be the nicest one they have. The location is good, very pedestrian accessible and right around the corner from the Granville Red Line station. It features very high ceilings, neatly stacked boxes of goods, a well stocked fresh produce area and the staff has been friendly. It is not a big store nor do they carry everything you need to make a gourmet dinner, however, if you are looking for staples, basic produce or other items that really don't matter what brand it is, this is a great place to shop. Bag of flour for $1.40 and 10 cent limes...take that Jewel and Dominick's! The peaches were a bargain and very fresh. I've added the Edgewater Aldi to my list of stores that help keep my grocery budget in check. I recommend bringing along your own reusable shopping bags as Aldi charges you for their bags. read more

While ALDI has for many years been my go-to for many grocery and household items, the recent remodel of this store has changed that. According to ALDI this remodel would increase product selection, but I no longer find "Special Buys" and the product selection seems overall much smaller at a store that was already woefully small. In many places the architectural barriers to navigating the store have been worsened. My one-stop shop is gone, and the hassle of the experience makes it worth it to shop elsewhere. I can't get over the poor reviews! Do only disgruntled folks do reviews? Aldi's is a grocery store, not a dollar store or a wine outlet! The produce is always fresh, though I mostly use the organics, which are well represented in terms of variety. Cost can't be beat! Great parking, inside! I do not need to choose from tens of any kind of food choices which is a plus to me and saves me time. Plenty of choices in almost every category, though. Well organized and well stocked, it simplifies the experience. I have NEVER met any rude employee, except perhaps an unfriendly security guard and there have been times when Aldi staff have gone way beyond the call of duty to help me find an item or even a glove! If I need a specialty item I go to another nearby store, but Aldi's carries at least 98% what I need and has saved me thousands of dollars over the years! Thank you Edgewater Aldi! read more

To use and appreciate Aldi, you have to drink the Kool-Aid. Meaning, you have to accept what Aldi is, forget what Aldi is not, and, tell yourself, it is what it is. It's not Treasure Island, Whole Foods, Jewel, Trader Joe's, Harvestime Foods, or even the food aisles at 7-11. Aldi is self-service and low prices. Don't expect name brands, a wide selection, or much assistance from the staff. You can expect low prices on Aldi-branded items. I bought 2 pounds of angel hair pasta for $1.69. You're lucky to get one pound of pasta for that amount at any other grocery store. One dry pasta is pretty much like another. Most of the produce is packaged in large amounts. For example; I wanted one jalapeno pepper; my only choice was a package of three. I wanted one red onion; my only choice was a 3-pound package. I wanted one green pepper; my only choice was a package of three. If you're buying in bulk, you're golden. Even though the price was good for three peppers, I'm not going to buy three times what I need. I was able to get just two bananas. And I did buy one red pepper, but when I got it home, I found 1/3 of it was old and rotten, so I had to cut that away and discard the bad part. Suddenly the good price on my red pepper wasn't so good. The avocados were also available singly, and at a reasonable price. I bought four. I actually went to Aldi's because a friend said it was a good price to get avocados at a reasonable price. I don't eat meat or cheese, so I describe my experience with those items. Aldi's is not the be-all and end-all of shopping. I ended up going to another store to get the vegetables I wanted. If I wanted produce in bulk, I might come again, but the fact that my red pepper was already partially rotted makes me a little reluctant to frequent this store. To get to the parking, you follow a tortuous path through the lower levels of the parking garage up to the second level. I visited the store on a weekday, so there was no trouble with getting a spot or exiting. It looked really tight up there, however. Weekends and busy times might be difficult. There's actually a turn-around space by the entrance to the store, which tells you how challenging getting in and out might be during busy times. I don't think I'll be beating a path to this Aldi's anytime soon. It's just okay. Another, larger Aldi's is supposed to open soon near Montrose and Western, and that might be worth a visit. read more
