The water I had to take off ASAP that crushed half ny egg carton

Here I am thinking I'm going to have a regular grocery shopping trip on a Sunday as I do every Sunday for the past 3 years. I've gotten to know the staff pretty well. But as a much as there are some staff who are great there are the ones who ruin it for the rest. As im waiting in line I notice how short staffed they are. Which is fine. I understand. I put my groceries onto the belt and greet my cashier. No response. I get it no offense taken. The cashier proceeds to throw my groceries into my cart carelessly. My milk being crushed by the pressure of the pack of waters I have. The salad bag popping open from the pressure. The ice cream carton bursting through the seal. And my coke falling out the plastic from how hard she threw it into the cart. Now I understand they're busy. But that also doesn't mean to become disrespectful. I had ran and grabbed a last minute item taking no longer than 50seconds MAX. To which she says "PAY NOW. PAY NOW. PAY NOW. I DONT CARE. PAY." I tell her the attitude isn't necessary and the grocery's being thrown aren't either. To which she then tells me to "DONT EVER COME BACK" along with a slur. I have never been disrespected this badly in any business. I had to ask for the manager .. Matthew. He was sweet and took his time to listen to my concerns. But even then I was never issued an apology from the cashier herself. She had glasses. Piercings. And split dyed hair. I never gotten her name... I think I'm going to have to cut my ties with the business unfortunately.

ALDIs is likely the easiest/best choice in this Edgewater neighborhood, but it's not my favorite. Some quirks would just take getting used to... bagging your own groceries, etc. Prices seem good, but I prefer a small grocer like TJs

I snatched up all of the lobster ones...left some crab ones

Strawberries are restocked Tuesday-Thursday. A good place to buy milk including sealed cartons.

It is within walking distance, which is a plus, though I do watch the prices and go to Mariano's or Jewel when they offer more for less. EVERYONE at the meat/cheese counter is great, and friendly. They really do know their stuff, though at times, I wish they had a ticketed numbered system. It would prevent me from going off on some of the older Eastern Euro clientele when they try to butt in line. NOT happening! The cashiers are efficient, though there is a tall male one that is new to me. Feels like his name should be Draco. Would almost pass for AI, due to his height an personality, though AI can be programmed to be charming and efficient. He literally saw me put down items on the belt and looked like he was confused as to what his role was, then asked me if I wanted a bag for all my purchases, despite it being obvious that I had none with me. I had to get snippy, because, well, I had to get snippy. Oprah did mention them in one of her shows, so they got "trendy" afterwards, but as other reviewers have said, they do carry items that you would find more at a Treasure Island than a Jewel, Aldi, or Mariano's. They are good for that. Now, if they would only work on their AI cashiers and make them more personable, then I would give them a five star rating. Especially since peeps in the hood voted down Amazon from taking over and planting seeds on the corner of Western and Lawrence, to take over the grocery store market.

It's a pretty standard small grocery store, with a few things that may be hard to find elsewhere. They have some international brands, although the Mexican grocery store farther west on Lawrence (Lindo Michigan) is a better bet for Central American things. They sell some local brands, including freshly-roasted coffee from Brü Coffeeworks, also on Lawrence. Prices are a smidge higher than you might find elsewhere, but at least they're consistent and don't require you to download an app or join a frequent shopper club or whatever. I do wish they would stay open a little later. The staff are helpful, and they have a good selection of spices and seasonings. I wasn't able to find caraway seed elsewhere, for some reason, but when I asked a staff member if they had any, he immediately took me to the exact spot on the shelf where they had it in two different container sizes.

Sometimes they have good sales on particular items, such as produce that's overripe. I really love their selection of prepared foods, both entrees and bakery items. Their tiramisu "Greco traditional style" is some of the best tiramisu I've ever had!! Yes, their recently implemented "bag policy" is somewhat of a hassle, but I imagine they are such a small store that theft is actually an issue. Therefore they are trying to keep their profit margins in the black and I get that! They always have homeless people outside the store, many of whom I now know by name, who are just trying to get something to eat (and they do, from me and other neighbors), but it's still a liability for the store if someone steals from them. This isn't Walmart, i don't condone thieving from local markets!

The manager here wanted to save what $15 so another staff member could be stocking a shelf? Crazy. Absolutely insane. This store is pretty decent overall, but the levels of disrespect this shows for your own staff and your community is just unreal. Whoever staffed the store that night should be deeply ashamed of themselves. The stockholders are gonna be ok. Put a working staff member on registers at all times period. What if someone got injured? The self checkout here has a TINY spot to put your bag. Move the bag a bit and the scale freaks out. I can think of endless reasons for a cashier to be working at all times. Think of members of your community who need help if you run a FOOD STORE. Think of ways to improve your business rather than screwing customers. What about people who are neurodivergent and have disabilities? All to save like $100 a week. I bet they pull cashiers every night that last hour. What an F you to the people you sell to. TLDR: 9:30pm and NO cashier working a register. Elderly woman forced to use self checkout with a cart full of heavy items.

Next time I will arrive there much earlier and make sure to get in line for a few items, which I missed yesterday. Definitely want to get the Ube Tea, and some of the Ube buns, plus the beignets!
