Pros: Fast check-out; stable prices/no gimmicks; staff are easy to find; items usually well stocked; cashiers get to sit Cons: I'd love it if they carried a broader range of goods (maybe expand the over-the-counter pharmacy section), so I could do more of my shopping here! They do run out of certain fresh produce items, especially when the sale is good. It'd be nice if they ordered more, so I wouldn't have to make return trips. At the same time, not over-ordering perishable goods probably helps keep the prices down. Also, they don't carry alcohol here. I asked an employee about this, and she said it had something to do zoning and was out of their control. Bummer. read more

The prices are awesome, fruits and vegetables are fresh, the variety of food and groceries is great!

Soy milk: $1.35 1 lb pistachios: $4.30 Limes: $.15/fruit Grapes and bananas don't look to be in bad shape. Selection of frozen vegetables is decent. Staff is friendly and helpful. A regular stop on the way home, for sure. read more

All I can say is, finally. Anyone who knows me knows that I am a tireless Aldi fanatic. No, it's not the greatest grocery store in the world, but it is top three, and the only one you can get this far west. This store, however, blows the regular aldis away. While I'm a little sad they didn't end up getting their liquor license (Although maybe it'll come later), and they don't have the quarter carts, the rest of the store is more than sufficient for 5 stars. I don't know how much of it is that everyone working there was new, but the staff were helpful to those who needed help, and the cashiers were still cheerful, even an hour before closing. The produce section is fairly standard; you won't be finding anything too exotic, but for your standard fruits and veggies, everything's there, and in good quality. You'll also find the standards for meat, bread, and frozen goods, all priced significantly lower than Dominick's down the street. read more

I love you Aldi! I'm just sad this hadn't opened when I still lived it Edgewater. This Aldi is so clean and bright. The prices are amazing and you don't even have to remember to bring a quarter for the cart thanks to the new fancy magnetic technology or what not that locks the carts. I had forgotten how cheap Aldi was compared to the South Loop Jewel and Whole Foods. There's tons of treats for $0.99 and the selection of brand name foods, refrigerated, and frozen foods section blows away all the other Aldis I've been to. If I had no restraint (or a car to lug it all home) I so would have thrown tons of stuff in my cart like... Crab Rangoon Pringles Mini Milky Way Bars Buy one get one FREE Bread Frozen Cream Cheese Stuffed Wantons Aldi Lunchables Coffee Cake Gallons of Milk for $1.49 Bouquets of Roses Shredded Mini Wheat Bites And so much more. This is by far, the best Aldi I have ever been in. They don't take credit cards, debit only, but it's a small price to pay when I'm getting so much food for so little money! Please stay here forever...and procreate lots of other Aldi stores in the city! read more

I was recently laid off from my job, and while I'm not hurting financially (yet, and hopefully won't be), I really love having this Aldi so close to do my grocery shopping. I am all about saving money and this helps me achieve that. I can find pretty much everything I need for my weekly grocery shopping trip, and have yet to try anything that was less tasty than a name brand version of the same product. I even feel like the produce is decent if you compare it to a Jewel or Dominick's. Some people aren't comfortable shopping at Aldi's for whatever reason (lack of name brands, perception that less savory people shop there, etc.), but I think a lot of that is hullabaloo. I have never had an issues at this Aldi. The store is clean. The selection is good and there is this one guy who works checkout who is SUPER nice. No complaints at all. read more

ALDI is a no-frills budget supermarket with a good selection of store brand products. The quality of their food is competitive with the local Jewel and Trader Joe's. However, the shopping experience is very different. ALDI puts no time or effort into the presentation of their products. Everything is sitting in packing boxes with a price tag on the shelf above. It can be difficult to find what you're looking for unless you know where to look. The produce seems to be hit or miss. The prices are very good compared to other supermarkets in the area. Bring a quarter so that you can rent a shopping cart. read more

Pros - generally excellent prices (though some items are market rate just like any other supermarket); really good distinct seasonal items especially German cookies in December; and interesting seasonal frozen food items (such as Bremer's Shepherds Pie in winter). Cons - somewhat chaotic atmosphere; fresh fruits and some vegetables not as good as Jewel or Marianos when it comes to shelf life; removal of the small carry-baskets which leave you with giant grocery carts to maneuver; and some rude cashiers who simply throw your items in their adjacent checkout cart while ignoring your scramble to pack them in your shopping bag. I usually only go there for specialty items that are distinct to Aldi. read more

It amuses me so much when people think that putting a quarter in the cart is somehow costing them anything... you get your precious quarter back when you put your cart back where it belongs. Obviously, the issue was not with people STEALING the carts... (the material the cart is made of costs more than a quarter) no, they put the quarter thing on the carts because people never put their carts back where they belong. The quarter system ensures that the store need not keep on an extra staff person to do the drone work of pushing carts because - well - everyone wants their quarter back. But without that motivation they almost never put their carts back. If you've never been to an Aldi store before, you shouldn't write a review of this one. If this was your first Aldi experience, you were spoiled by this location in the beginning being that it was the ONLY location without the quarter-for-a-cart system (which is really not that complicated). If you want to save money, you'll adjust to these minor hassles which actually make a lot of sense in the end and are a huge reason why Aldi has low prices. A gallon of milk is currently $1.79. read more

I LOVE Aldi and I love this store. It save us about 50% of the same amount of food at a regular grocery store and almost all of it is name-brands with different packaging or European imports. I love how they have everything you might need but then every week they have a new selection of gourmet foods and other goodies. It's like Christmas every time you go shopping. I also appreciate that the company treats its employees better than the average supermarket. The cashiers get to sit and I believe they are payed better too. This results in a pleasant customer service experience - what do you know? I also love that they have a double refund guarantee - if you don't like something you get another one AND your money back. People who turn their nose up at Aldi are seriously missing out. read more

For a long time, I was too big of a snob to go to Aldi, but that just proves that being a snob is stupid. (I also thought that you could only use cash, which kept me away, but you can use debit cards, as well.) I was most impressed with the awesome price I got on the Nature's Path organic cereal -- it was less than $3.00, and is more like $6 or $7 or more at any other place. They mostly do not carry name brands - just their own house brands - but that is fine. I was so happy to find such great prices on canned good staples like beans and soup, and even good stuff like whole wheat pasta. I left the place with more food than I could carry home by walking, all for $50. The only reason I don't give them 5 stars is that more than one item I went to buy had leaky packaging -- so you need to watch out for that sort of thing. Hopefully, that was fluke. But, it won't keep me from going back. In fact, I plan to buy as much stuff as I can from there. I guess the other drawback is that they don't carry a ton of produce, but I feel like that's not their specialty. I'm still going to get most of my produce at health food-type grocers, where I can avoid shrink-wrapped, pre-packaged fruits and veggies and get almost everything organic. read more

Inexpensive groceries - free parking! 25 cents for the car can't go wrong! It's the best bet for a family on a budget. They don't always have everything but they do have enough to get by. This store does have security and they do not hesitate- they busted two people in the store while I was there. However the parking did have security cams I would always take someone with. read more

By far the worst aldis ive been too... only my second time being to this one & the cashiers are rude as hell. When your a paying customer you shouldn't be treated like shit... sorry you don't like your job but no excuse at all to treat a customer like that If I could do ZERO stars I would. Won't be coming back to this one. read more

Okay, so I will admit that I was disgruntled when I found out an Aldi was going in that location rather than a Trader Joes, which is one of the reasons I held out from going for so long. However, there's not a lot of options in the neighborhood. I gave in and have had a mixed experience. The best analogy I can think of for Aldi are those weird Bugs Bunny clones that came out of the radioactive carrots. They look kind of the same but it's just a bit different. The packaging is designed to look familiar and everything in the store has that weird imitation quality about it. It was a little spooky at first-- not that I'm a pretentious name-brand-only kind of person-- my partner calls it the Twilight Zone of grocery stores. Aldi also cuts a lot of corners in order to save money. They charge you a nominal fee for bags and don't hire people to bag for you. There is no shelving and everything is just stacked in it's warehouse packaging, which makes everything look like- surprise- a warehouse (a very clean and well-lit warehouse though). For staples like salt, crackers, cereal and other basic things that likely come from the same factory as the name-brand, Aldi is an amazing resource. Still, I'm wary of their produce, meats and dairy. Basically, anything that has an expiration date. They are, however, really good about giving refunds on products that aren't what they should be and they gladly refunded me for some salsa that gave me food poisoning. Not that I would ever buy salsa from them again. I don't entirely distrust their cheap bell peppers or eggs, but for things like that I'd rather spend the extra money and get organic or cage-free. read more

Recent (in the last year) aldi convert. Often combine a bike ride w/shopping up north. No aldi near north side (so far....). When they started building that place at the corner of Broadway and Granville, I head rumors of a Trader Joe's, which was music to my ears. Then I learned that it was, in fact, just a rumor. Sigh. Imagine my joy, though, to see Aldi signage sitting inside the not-yet-open store a few weeks ago. Yes, it is a little small, but it's clean and well-lit, with wide aisles and nice high ceilings. Granted, it did just open, so let's hope the cleanliness sticks around. And while it doesn't have booze (my guess is the Dominick's lobby), it does have a solid selection of Aldi favorites at Aldi prices, as well as the random assortment of name brands (Pringles, M&M's, and Skittles stick out in my mind). And the staff has been super nice, which is always a plus. Very welcome addition to the neighborhood! Now I just need to get one of those old lady folding carts... read more

Honestly Aldi is one of the few places I can spend money without great guilt these days. Their staff are working, probably mostly part-time for 14.30/hour or whatever (see the signs in your Aldi), so we can all get affordable food during the pandemic. And they are checking us out 10X more quickly than Target, Jewel, or Marianos ... less risk of covid. We don't need 5 million choices of cereal, 20 or so is good! Thanks Aldi. read more

Your not living if you live without Aldi. (I call it Aldis). I have lived on Aldi growing up. As I got older, grown folks think they should go to other places; get name brand things. Not always the case for me; some great things, if not many of them, can come from Aldi. For me, I was so happy to remember that Aldi was walking distance from my house last weekend. You can find most of what you need. The store was clean, well lit, and well stocked. Service was fast by cashiers. Line were a bit long. Note for improvement: maybe there should have two cashiers/lanes at all times on Saturdays... Anyone who shops here does not care about the above. They care about the savings. The week prior, I spend $65 at Jewel. Shopping at Aldi, $36 for the same items! I still will prefer shopping for produce at Jewel, even though a picked up some tomatoes, mushrooms, oranges and bananas this trip. Overall, I will make Aldi a part of my weekend shopping trip. Nice way to save half of my $$$ ! read more

Corn flakes: $0.99. I'd visit Aldi for that reason alone. It's also a pretty short walk from my place (5-6 minutes, tops). There are other great cereal prices, too, as well as decent produce. Oh, and eggs for $0.99. As someone else noted, it feels like a dollar store. I'm favorably impressed with the whole presentation. Nice addition to the neighborhood... It doesn't have everything, of course, but that's why we have TJ's, Whole Foods, and (in extreme cases) Fox & Obel. I really wonder why anyone would bother with the "middle tier" of Jewel and Dominick's. There's booze, yes, but they don't seem to bring that much else to the table. read more

I'm slowly beginning to like this store. I was very opposed to paying a quarter to access a cart and a dime for a bag. Last week I received a excellent level of customer service having to do with my purchase of an over-ripe melon. The manager (Hada) absolutely surprised me with her care for me as a customer. I plan to keep shopping here even after our Whole Foods opens. read more

I had never shopped in an Aldi until one opened up right across the street fro me. I was a bit off put because we were supposed to get a Trader Joe's so I wasn't too happy to see the Aldi sign go up. I'll tell you in this economy its great to have a place like this so close by for the staples... with the exception of their "It's just like real butter" instead of "I can't believe it's not butter" butter type nonsense. That stuff is just crap. The prices are great and I like their no frills business plan. I bring my own bags and never have to say to the cashier "oh that's ok my milk doesn't need a bag (who the hell needs a bag for their milk anyway... it comes with a handle, right?) They have a lot of great stuff here for cheap and that is what I am looking for. If I want Godiva brownie mix I'll head down the block to Dominicks thank you. read more

Aldi used to be great. These days, they are eliminating food items to make way for random nonsense you can buy for less at Walmart. Bring back the food, Aldi! Please! read more

I went here once, and I will never go again. I came for some basic items, but they had nothing. Shopping here produce for one or two people is impossible, I could only get limes in a back of 15 (who needs that many?) and onions in a pack of five. I was very disappointed in the produce "section" and variety in general. The cheese was even worse. They had one variety-cheddar. Don't get me wrong, I love cheddar (and cheese in general), but you should offer a bit more than that. Maybe they did and I didn't notice because people just ~rudely~ throw items they no longer want into a pile, but who knows. This store is disorganized and messy, and the employees seem really overworked, or just terrible/ignore restocking. I understand Aldi's philosophy of "less employees= less salary to pay= lower costs", but this is ridiculous. I'd much rather walk the extra few blocks and go to whole food read more

Well maybe i would shop there except good luck getting a basket. It seems people steal them and Aldi has chosen to make everyone deal with it instead of buying new ones. Why do you even have security? read more

The worst. It's such a tiny store. There's not enough room to turn your carts around or you're bumping into the next person. You can't even go off to the side to review your grocery list because you'll hold the line up. Yes, you have to shop in a walking line. One person in front of the other. The produce is also trash. Two stars because the prices are low and the store is relatively clean. But if you're a shopper that likes to browse without feeling like you're going to hold up the imaginary line then head to Mariano's and pay the extra buck or drive to a suburban ALDIs where the aisle space is in abundance. read more

This particular Aldi is SO not what I remember Aldi being like back in the day... (when I think of Aldi, I remember the dirty, smelly, darkly-lit stores that I used to be dragged to as a kid in po-dunk towns in southern Illinois. Ew.) BUT... this Aldi!? It is clean, nicely laid out, has friendly cashiers, and oh yeah... it's hella cheap! I got some great little frozen flatbreads that were delicious, a bunch of fruit/veggies that are just as tasty as the ones I pick up at Whole Foods, and a few other random items that have yet to fail me. They've got a great frozen section & tons of dairy items. Two ecstatic thumbs up. read more

I'm a private-label-loving cheapskate. How could I fail to love the lovechild of Costco and Trader Joe's. Our new revamped Aldi's at 6221 N. Broadway is now open and it's better than ever. Cleaner, brighter and a bigger selection of items. The store looks modern and the prices can't be beat. Just opened today and I'm already looking forward to going back. Thanks for the update Aldi!!! read more

With the take over of WF by Bezos, the King of the World, I have been trying to shop in other stores in the hood. There are some smaller stores that are enjoyable to shop at in the area, with unique items, but they don't have organic produce so I forced myself to try Aldi one more time but again it was the worst food shopping experience of my life. The employees act like they are doing you a favor by even answering you or attending to you. The prices are NOT that good to withstand the abuse of shopping here. I knew there was an Aldi's nearby to where I just moved -- so I was anxious to check it out. I never had access to anything even close in the Gold Coast (not that anyone there needs it anyway; I considered myself lucky to have a Jewel and a Trader Joe's!). I was scouring around for a dollar store to stock up on some "moving in" supplies and was glad to see the Aldi's on the way. So I stop into Micky D's to get me a McCafe before my little trip into Aldi. I wasn't getting much - was mainly just checking it out. It's clean, the staff is very nice and even though they were about to close, they let me get my stuff and were courteous to me. My bill only came to $6.71 and I got half & half, butter, whipped cream and corn chips! Yay! I resisted temptation to buy hoagie buns, knowing that I would prefer the amazing fresh baked bread at Devon Market. They have a very nice selection of just about everything one could need ... it's a no frills store, but I'd rather pay less for some essentials and visit places like Dominick's for stuff like fresh baked bread and home made soups. Butter is butter - etc., and I don't need to pay more for it if I don't have to. So my plan is to hit this store maybe once a month for essentials like that and continue to get the fabulous produce and bread at Devon Market. read more

Wow this place is a dump! Unless you like stressful grocery shopping, steer clear. I've been in once or twice over last year or two and wasn't a fan of how compact (forget browsing those narrow crowded aisles, there is no room to move!). Prices are often unmarked/unclear ESPECIALLY by produce but in all areas. Everything is a hot mess, lots of empty boxes, items strewn here and there. The cashier looked like she was attending a funeral. There was a super strong stench of urine up by cash register--NOT A PERSON--I was gagging (which may or may not have explained the cashier's enthusiasm). I stood in line for an eternity to buy 10 items. Guy in front of me told the cashier how much he liked the juice he was buying and she stared at him, no response. Do yourself a favor and go to the one in West Rogers Park or Evanston. Where the stores are clean, stocked, and staff is friendly! read more

Within walking distance, I shop here frequently. It's always clean and the produce is fresh. Employees are friendly and helpful. If you drive, they have parking. It's my favorite store in Edgewater. Okay, not sure what's going on with the person that said this is the "biggest" Aldi ever - try the one down on Belmont and Kimball, then see what you think of this one. This is actually one of the smaller Aldi's, yet they've done a good job of shoehorning the store into an atypical location. They nicely offer baskets in addition to their carts (have to say that I wasn't surprised that they eventually ended up doing the quarter system here, too) but the baskets make it easier for quick trips on foot. They're definitely catering to more of an "on-foot" clientele here than some locations. I would like sometime to time-travel to the fearsome Aldi's of the past... when they came to Michigan in the mid-90s, they weren't much different from most of what I see these days, although it's clear that they've been working on remaking that image. I challenge anyone who's avoided Aldi for the last 10 years to stop in, esp. at a location like this one or the new one in Evanston on Oakton (where we usually go, as hubby doesn't like parking in the garage here, but I hit this one when I'm by myself), or one of the remodeled locations (Pulaski and Foster, soon Clybourn and Fullerton locations). They're a great place for quality food at low, low prices and they now offer better and more varied produce, dairy and fresh meats than ever. Often on a weekday morning, I can get in and out in under half an hour and under $30 for TONS of food. read more
