Reasons to go to Devon Market (other than the good prices, fruits & veggies, etc.) 1. Hot, fresh from the oven bread. I've been here at various times of the day and there's always hot bread available. The steam is still coming of off the bread, it's so good! 2. International chocolate. They have a good selection of chocolate from mainly europe, it's so much better than american chocolate. Now only if they carried Galaxy chocolate from England. . . 3. This isn't a huge supermarket, but it's big enough. What I like best about the store is (1) The produce is good, and they have a higher proportion of floor space given over to fresh stuff than many stores, plus with good prices. (2)The staff is friendly, while behaving exactly like real people: the checkers and the deli people especially. (3) There's a pretty good selection of ethnic food: Hispanic and central European (the owners or managers are Bosnian Ithink, and about half the above-mentioned staff is Eastern European), and some Oriental. They have a fair selection of low- to mid-range wine and beer, including lots of brands from Romania, Croatia, Hungary, Poland, etc. Their wine prices are reasonable; their liquor prices are high. Feb 2016: The store has gone somewhat downhill in the last six months or so. There has been a fair amount of personnel turnover, and the new people are less friendly and, mostly, less knowledgeable: in particular the security guy as you come in - Pete is gone now, had been a fixture for many years, knew every nook of the store, and was very helpful. The new guy is OK I guess, but brusque and of course doesn't know the store well. In case the owners read this: in the winter your checkout people are freezing, because the cold air comes in from the front door constantly opening of course. They've been wearing scarves and sweaters and some of them even gloves and coats. It might cost a bit, but how about a bit of forced air heating for them? read more

Been meanin to update my review. There's been some nice improvements. Now there's a juice bar in there, the raw meats have come down in price a tad bit. I don't see the arrogance of owner(s) anymore. Just a cashier or two that isn't polite but click on "ignore" sequence & we're all good. Again this is not the kind of place to do major grocery shopping. But when you don't feel like driving anywhere (if you have wheels to do so) & you need only a few items, it doesn't hurt to stop by here. Prices are affordable. Meat quality is good. Bakery stuff is REALLY good (better than I last remember). For some reason now the store has a nice amount of character. It's ok to run in for stuff when you have that small gathering at your apartment & you're out of something. Good staple for the neighborhood. read more

My go to local grocery store. Produce is fresh and priced just right. Staff is really nice as well. I sometimes find very good wine for a few dollars. They have pretty much what I need except decently priced OJ. If they just sold OJ for a reasonable price, I wouldn't have to go to Target anymore. I guess beer too. They need more IPAs. read more

Something about the Devon market has a really homely feel. Right when you enter you will notice it is always busy and rightfully so. They have a great selection of fresh fruits and vegetables and even a freshly squeezed juice area. I have noticed that the pastas are a little more expensive than I would get at say Jewel but this store does have almost everything you need. They even sell baklava and sushi! Customer service seems to have gotten better. Green juice bar is still useful when absolutely necessary bc I don't want to do it at home myself. Smell of rotting meat is consistently intolerable and I refused to ever buy any meats here still. Basic produce only or last minute necessities primarily non-perishables. read more

LOVE IT! Especially if you hate supporting Dominicks'. Produce is great. You HAVE TO get a big round loaf of bread that is freshly baked and it's by the customer service area. Also - they have craploads of wine! An entire half of an aisle devoted to wine. Did you know they have booze, too? Huge produce section, never have to go elsewhere for produce items. Prices are cheap for most produce and meats. Their ready made sushi is surprisingly delicious. Other items are a bit expensive, such as toiletries or the cereal. But they have a great wine selection and lots of ethnic foods. The checkouts are always quick. The aisles are cramped, and always busy. And i think they only hire cute girls for the checkouts. They are all russian or latina beauties. Such a little gem in Rogers Park. Great produce selection and very reasonable prices. I work nearby and usually come here to get some lunch. They have some yummy selections in the deli, including fresh veggie rolls. I can usually get out with a great lunch for less than $6. The people who work here are friendly and helpful. It can get really crazy at certain times of day, so I try and make it here before the 5:00 rush. read more

The place has everything you can think of, including a good variety of fish at a very low price (I didn't find much fish in shops, really). Fish nuggets for only $1.99 a pound - sounds great to me! Although the pathes between shelves are quite narrow, but it's still nice to shop here. I guess the prices beat small inconveniences. read more

The produce prices are not spectacular compared to other local markets. More importantly, what kind of market on Devon does not have bitter melon? I went there expecting to buy bitter melon, knowing that it's a favorite in Indian and southeast Asian cuisine, and they didn't have it. Devon Market has come a long way since I first started shopping here about four years ago. They've really improved the aesthetics of their store (of course, it is still a small local store and is not what I would expect at a big chain store) as well as expanding options to include more organic/seemingly healthy options. Prices aren't extremely high or low but I stop by often and save money by keeping an eye on what's on sale. I like shopping for produce here because I only cook for myself - I'm not forced to buy a whole bushel of onions or a sack of potatoes like I would be at an Aldi/Jewel/Target if I only need one or two. The workers are always friendly and seem happy to be working here - in the past, when I've noticed they've discontinued something I like or asked about an item they might not have, I've come back the week after to find it back on the shelf! read more

I went there today and was suitably impressed. I would have had to go to Aldi if they weren't running the sale they were running - 69 cents for eggs (wow!) and 1.99 for a lb of butter. I also was really happy with their meat section, which is twice as big as the one at Morse. I bought an apple that weighed over a pound! I'm taking it on a visit to see my nieces this weekend, just to freak them out. I will definitely return, but I need to outfit my cart with ramming gear. There is a kind of Mad-Max thing going on with the other shoppers. It's totally upsetting. I got out of there with what I needed plus some nice rare roast beef in under 12 minutes. Pretty good, considering the high number of strange looking deranged elders aggressively pushing their carts into other carts. read more

I walked here from Evanston once because I wanted some papayas. Yikes. This is a wonderful grocery store - they have sort of an eccentric selection of Mexican, Middle Eastern, and Eastern European stuff as well as everything else you'd expect from a grocery store. The real draw here is the prices, though - my tasty papayas ended up being half as much as I saw them for at Jewel. Definitely worth going out of your way if you want cheap, fresh produce or you're interested in making ethnic food and can't find what you need elsewhere. read more

This is a neighborhood gem that everyone in the area should be shopping at. Maybe they already are because this place is always busy. We moved here two years ago and stop by the market 2 or 3 times a week for 90% of our needs. And I'm someone that preferred a mega-giant Woodman's food store when we lived in Wis. The prices here are what I'd call fair and reasonable and the selection for many items more than adequate. A frustrating store. Much of it is good, but sometimes the produce is marginal. And they do not consistently stock arugula, which is strange in this age. The bread that they bake is not the greatest, mostly made with very white flour. Let's have some more interesting breads made with real flour. read more

THE destination for me for reasonably-priced produce. My biggest problem tends to be getting my haul home... When things are in season/on sale, it's super cheap. Every now and then, I've had to dig for a good piece, but on the whole, it's good stuff. Nice variety, too, with plenty of Hispanic and Asian/Indian choices. I've had pretty good luck with seafood, too, often finding their prices far lower than Dominicks (though that doesn't say much, really). There are usually some decent wine deals, with plenty of respectable domestic and foreign options under $10. And once in a great while, I'll indulge in a baked good, which have given some real winners. From rustling up big batches of chili in the winter to salads and smoothies in the summer, my go-to for produce... and whatever else I might find. There's going to be something. read more

This is a superb local grocery. I don't eat a lot of boxed convenience food anymore. I'm cooking with real ingredients. Come here for excellent quality selection of produce, affordable selection of wine, lots of great quality meats and seafood, clean and well organized and fresh baked goods. I got spoiled living two blocks away from this gem. But now that I've moved, I pass two grocery stores on my way just to get to this place. read more

This is my neighborhood grocery store and I have to say I've been quite pleased. The bread is phenomenal and the produce is great. That said, the meat selection is limited and I'm never very impressed with the prices (sans produce, the prices are fair there). I wish they had a greater selection of yogurt but hey, they DO have a million flavors of Chobani to choose from so who can complain? Four stars, three of them for the bread alone. read more

The selection of produce and product is incredible and feels like a trip around the world (or even a trip home depending on where you're from). The staff at Devon is incredibly friendly and helpful. The music they play is so fun! They have a discount for Loyola students and promotions for discounts on sushi and alcohol pretty frequently. People are friendly and nice. I am a vegetarian so I only buy produce here. Some of the vegetables are great (wonderful kale, great price), but others are not so good. Good apples, and their winter persimmons are good too. But some fruit looks bad, and their mushrooms rarely hold for more than two days. Overall, a good little market with a great parking lot. This is a wonderful neighborhood grocery store. I have been a devoted customer for years. At the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, they were fully stocked almost all the time. This is why I am sad to report that for the last month or so, many, many employees-- primarily stockers who work in the narrow aisles-- are not properly wearing their masks which are vital for the health of employees and customers. To the owner: please, please, please speak to your employees and tell them to curb the spread of this deadly virus by wearing masks properly-- cover both nose and mouth at all times. It hadn't really occurred to me to write a review for Devon Market because there's nothing particularly remarkable about it, with the possible exception of the stench of rotting meat that assaults you when you walk in. I've never even considered buying meat here, so I ignore the smell and buy what I've usually come for: eggs or milk or bread or some other small purchase that I've forgotten to buy when I went to a real grocery store. There's nothing here you'd be interested in buying unless you like offal, brands you've never heard of, or Latvian fruit spread. (Be very careful with perishables and check the expiration dates; most everything is at or past the sell-by date.) It's an odd little store but seems to have a popular following amongst the local Eastern Europeans. They also have a nice selection of Goya Hispanic products, so if you cook ethnic food and need an obscure ingredient, try this store. The folks who run the place are brusque bordering on rude, but that's just my American sensibilities complaining because I'm used to a more fawning, overly smiley style of shop clerk. BUT...this evening they really ticked me off. I went over for a bottle of wine and asked for a bag, for which I should have paid the city tax of 7 cents. Dalia charged me 15 cents instead. I said, "The bag tax is 7 cents, not 15." She replied "This DIFFERENT bag." I said "No, the tax is 7 cents. Why did you charge me 15?" "Is DIFFERENT bag." WTF? The damn bag tax is 7 cents, but they've taken it upon themselves to jack it up to 15 cents. So it's only 8 cents, you're thinking, but I wasn't told that I'd pay more for "DIFFERENT bag" up front, and wasn't given a satisfactory answer after the fact. You can see by the photo of the receipt I uploaded that the line item for the city bag tax they've programmed into their register system is indeed 15 cents, not 7. The couple that was in front of me was standing at the bagging area while I was paying, and they were looking at their receipt wondering aloud the same thing. I know that Devon Market has been really cheesed about Target coming to the neighborhood (which I'll never understand; Target doesn't sell pig's feet), so maybe they've instituted their own little way of recouping imaginary lost revenue. read more

Devon Market is in my neighborhood, so I use it as the alternative to Lincolnwood Market (which has better meat and fresher produce). Devon Market is okay for produce, but I've accidentally picked up rotting acorn squash or potatoes--always fun to discover when you're making dinner for eight. They do have the best price on chicken thighs, and I've never been disappointed. They do have an ethnic section, but nothing nearly as vast as Lincolnwood Market, or even Garden Fresh. Of course, I only shop at Jewel or Dominick's when I'm forced at gunpoint to. So if you aren't into driving for good cheap produce and meat, Devon Market will do in a pinch. read more

I live north of Chicago, I work in downtown. about 2 years ago I passed by DEVON MARKET store, and my eyes cached colorful images on my left driving east on Devon Avenue, I decided to visit a store on the way back from work. since then I shop for my groceries at the same location. I love the eastern European style of the bakery, fish department, the wine selection, the juice bar and " most important you get what you pay for". The staff is very helpful and pleasant. Although there have been significant cosmetic changes, this store is not recommended and still seems dirty/unsanitary. DO not let the low prices & product selection fool you. There is constant cross-contamination issues in the deli & meat department including: using all the slicers for dairy AND meat, not changing gloves when handling meat vs. poultry, visible soiled terry towels, etc. There also never seem to be any rotisserie chickens in stock & the bread selection varies too much to be consistent. Watch the expiration dates on items you buy. After supporting this store since it was Dino's, I still support the independent grocer by now shopping at Morse Street Market which is amazingly clean and freshly-stocked. Cermak Produce offers the same ethnic selections with even more variety and their meat prices cannot be beat! Support local, but businesses run for Consumers--not owners. read more

THE STAFF IS RACIST! Every time I come to this store the clerks are young and snobby. The baggers are very rude. The last time I went to Devon Market I had my fiance and my 7 month old daughter with me. The guy who was bagging the groceries in the lane I was checking out at walked away, shooting my family a dirty look as soon as he finished bagging for a caucasian woman in front of us. The rude bagger then proceeded to walk through the other crowded lanes collecting hand baskets while I had to bag my own groceries with my 22lb baby wiggling in my other arm as my fiance was paying. As soon as we finished bagging our own groceries, the same racist bagger came back to the line we were just leaving to bag for the older caucasian gentleman behind us. IF YOU COME TO THIS STORE AND HAPPEN TO BE AFRICAN AMERICAN, BE PREPARED FOR COMPROMISED CUSTOMER SERVICE! I will be going to Trader Joe's to do my shopping from now on! read more

Devon Market is an interesting grocery store. Often it does not have the things I need but I still end up leaving with a ton of stuff. Usually a lot of things from the vast ethnic food section this store has. The fresh bread is also a treat when I need a carb overload. They just recently added new freezer to revamp their frozen food aisle. It was a great new addition since with the new freezers they started carrying Amy's Kitchens meals. That pleases me. My only complaint is that I often find the fruit and veggies dont always look so fresh. read more

I have been shopping here for over 5 years, and have mostly had positive experiences. The guys in the meat and produce departments are great and you can't beat the prices in those departments. However today I left there with not so great feelings. First off, there was a guy stocking shelves who left his step ladder in the middle of the aisles at least twice as I went through the store. Then when I checked out I was overcharged on 3 items. The customer service person adjusted 2,items but refused to do the other because the sign on shelf was not in front of the item, although the sign clearly stated that all the flavors were on sale. Took refund on that. Don't argue with me. That's the best way to lose a customer. read more

This place rocks! They have such an eclectic selection, heavy on Mexican and Eastern European items, so it's always fun to just go in and read labels. There's an extensive selection of eggplant spreads (central aisle), and the produce counter is very well stocked. The prices are just as good as anything you'd find at Dominick's, and I always leave with a really odd collection of things I just had to have. It's a great little market, and it's nice to be treated kindly by the cashiers and stock people. read more

I actually agree with Claire. The products and prices are great no doubt about it but the cashiers are so rude. It is rude when they keep talking to their cashier neighbors while they are ringing you up! They need to be more friendly. I barely shop here but the times I've done there's been only a couple of them who had greeted me, the rest are terribly bad at greeting the costumers!!!! read more

Once i visited my friend in chicago and i did my grocery shopping at Devon Market. Amazing products and excellent service. That warm homemade bread reminds me so much of home and family. The produce was so fresh and i needed some wine but i was not able to choose. Its a big big section of wine and cheap the most important. Some fresh juice i tried was really good. I will be back again and see what changes they have made, for good im sure about that. I highly recommend this place!!!!! read more
