It's a tiny take out place that has a small counter with stools if you would prefer to eat in. The waiting area is decked out with wood trim and feels almost as if you're in the galley of some old time fishing ship, but it smells a little bit too much like industrial cleaner. While this is better than a place smelling like oily fish or something worse, it still for one reason or another doesn't inspire confidence. Fried fish is simple and comes with a few pieces of wheat bread which is a nice touch. Unfortunately, the tartar sauce is weak and looks as if it sits out just a little too long. I think one of the reasons for the lower star rating is that I may just not appreciate southern style or harlem style (not quite sure) fish and chips. I'm used to traditional beer battered fish and chips with a big fluffy piece of haddock or cod. Whiting and catfish are just a bit too oily and fishy for my liking. All-in-all, the experience in Devin's isn't bad. It looks like a place steeped in history and the food is definitely made to order and comes piping hot. It's simple down home food and comes at a good price. Nothing more, nothing less. read more

This is a take-out place, not a sit-in restaurant. It is tiny, stuffy, and I think there are a total of 3 seats in a tiny bar at the back of the restaurant. Having said that, this place provides good quality delicious seafood. Their fish & chips is more southern style than British. They also have a good deal on broiled / baked / fried fish platters that come with two sides of your choice, priced around $10, big enough to feed 2 hungry adults, and have leftovers even. Be ready for a long wait if you go there during prime dinner time, it seems like the whole neighborhood lines up in front of it at around 8:00 pm or so. They are closed on Sunday. read more

I was in NY on business and stayed at an Airbnb spot a couple of blocks away from Devin's. I ate at this place everyday!! The salmon, scallops, Spanish rice and broccoli were to die for. Although I'm in NY a lot on business, I could not remember the name of this spot. I just found it and they are closed?? That's a bummer. I will be in NY in a few weeks and really wanted to revisit Devin's. The only draw back is the length of time it takes to get your food and the cramped space. Otherwise, I will always eat here. Usually I don't take the time to write reviews however this is necessary. I placed an order today mid-afternoon and everything was fine until the order came up and was wrong. I asked for an all fish but received an all shrimp instead. I told the cashier that my order was wrong and instead of correcting it we spent about 5mins going back and forth about it being my fault & how I'd have to pay for an additional order of fish. I order the same thing no matter the restaurant so I know it was just that she heard incorrectly. I try to spend money in the neighborhood however after this exchange (yes we both had an attitude when all was said & done) Devin's will never get my money again. They are back! After three long years Devin's is open again, I've been here dozens of times. I truly love their broiled salmon. They also make a killer whole broiled snapper and really great fried shrimp. They have doubled their seating area with maybe ten stools in total. If I could give no stars I would. The female with the ponytail and black hat has a nasty attitude. Secondly she took my order down wrong. I ordered fish and chips and steamed salmon. I told her I would come back to pick up my order she said it should be ready in 15 minutes I gave her 25. Cane back waited an additional 15 minutes. She goes do you want to put anything on the shrimp and chips. I said I have fish and chips she goes yes that's what I said. No that's not what she said and another customer hear her say shrimp. She's with the second order again asking if I want to put something on the shrimp I said I have salmon. She tries to show me the order to prove me wrong but all she wrote was SS!! Like just admit you're wrong!!! Then to tell me that I have to wait another 40 minutes for the salmon!! No apologies, nothing. Needless to say this is my first and last time coming here. read more

The fish is still good but they need to hold off on doing delivery until they have enough staff to support them. The order taker said it would take 20 min for my order to arrive. I waited over an hour for one order of the daily special. I live just 5 minutes away. Also, please get an additional phone line. Your phone shouldn't be busy every time someone calls. This was an issue when you were open before the fire. Several times I have gone to your competition because no one is answering the phone. I hear that you might be using one of the online delivery services in the future. I hope it's sooner than later. Would love to continue to get good fish from you in the future. Never tried this place before, and it was on my way home from work. Got Broiled Salmon Steaks, Fish&Chips, and a few sides. Me and my significant other both got very ill that night. Still feeling it this morning. I vomited twice, and had all the other symptoms of food poisoning. Worse food-related illness of my life. I'm sure this doesn't happen to everybody, but obviously it's the last time we'll be getting food from them. Staff was nice, and I'm not trying to get even with anybody. This place has an A from the health department, so I figured it was safe. And honestly, after-effects aside, we didn't enjoy the food that much. read more

Devin's is a sanitation disgrace. They dump raw fishheads in their back yard and have left bags of garbage in their yard for months. (I have photos.) It is generating rats in theirs and neighboring yards and buildings. I was baffled how they can display an A rating in their window until my neighbors and I complained to Dept. of Health and discovered that no one even investigated! The garbage is still in their yard. I have not attached my name to this review because I fear retaliation. I ate their food once, but would never dream of doing so again. read more

I like Devin's because they are offer more than just fried fish and shrimp on their menu (see Jake's review). The only thing is that they tend to close a bit early so I think they lose some of their potential business to Famous Fish down the block. While Famous fries up the smaller cuts of fish in a floury coating Devin's uses bigger pieces (like House of Seafood) and coats it in cornmeal. Their prices aren't bad for a fish sandwich and they are usually pleasant when you go in. They also have quite a bit of seating in their narrow little space. read more

I went here for the first time a week ago and ordered fish and chips and it was great. I came back a week after to try the Spanish rice with the fish and it wasn't good at all. I had really high hopes but now it has dwindled. First off I ordered the rice and fish and had to run so I didn't inspect like i normally do. When I arrived home shortly after to eat, the rice had a bad smell to it that couldn't be ignored. The fish was okay but not crazy about it this time. Rice isn't supposed to have a bad smell. I suspect I got spoiled rice or something. I'm betting disappointed. The three stars is because the first time I came the food was good. I guess it's a hit or miss. It isn't good all the time. I've heard so much about this spot that I wanted to try it out for myself. I will say that it is a small narrow space that can fill up quickly but the cooks/staff are pretty good at getting your food cooked and to you right away. They only accept cash, so be sure to bring it with you or hit up the CapOne on the corner of 145th Street. I placed 3 orders of All Fish that were so greasy it made my stomach turn. Great fish, great prices, large portion sizes! Their fries are amazing! I've tried my fish fried, broiled and steamed and it's all been delicious. It was great! A nice little hole in the wall place. Cash only :( I had a fish sandwich and fries. Next time I will try the shrimp. It was really good though and it was like 7 dollars. The cook/ cashier seemed a bit grumpy but I digress. I have never written a review in my life and I am so happy to do so for Devin's! I was devastated when fire took them out a few years back and last year stopped doing drive by's to see if they had reopened. Devin's had been a staple for my family on Friday nights for years and it was more than a meal for us - it was a lynchpin in a family gathering, and part of our family tradition. In a day and age where so many family oriented thing fall by the wayside it was sad for us to lose Devin's. I am a Harlemite by birth and a transplant to Westchester, but still drove back into the city for the Friday night fish fry because it was just that good. We eventually found another fish spot that is good but not as good. So when I heard that Devin's was back in business I couldn't wait to get over there and give it a try. I wasn't disappointed. While I can't say that it what I remember, the food still tastes great, the whiting is flaky, the veggies are great and the rice is off the chain. I am looking forward to trying more of the new menu - who knows - new traditions are a good thing too. Welcome back to Devin's. So so glad to have you back in our Friday nite! read more

I'm a fan. Four stars instead of five because it took forever for the food to be prepared, granted it was a busy night but I was super hungry. With there only being one cook it can take a while for your order to get made so beware if you're really hungry. That notwithstanding the fish and shrimp I ordered were both really good. I was also pleased with the side of broccoli and as others have commented the fries weren't spectacular but it all depends on how you like your fries. There are also other sides you can get so all is not lost. The kid at the counter was really nice and I was proud to see a young brother who was working hard and being helpful. My friend and I have been meaning to check out the fried fish places in Harlem for a while now and we finally managed to get our act together and do it to night. We picked Devin's because there actually is some seating here, but it's counter style not tables. The place was pretty empty when we got there around 7, but I guess that's because most of the people just order take out instead of staying. We shared the fish&shrimp&chips and the calamari&chips. The shrimp and calamari were awesome; I'm not usually a shrimp fan but they did something magical with the breading and it tasted great. The calamari was also excellent, it wasn't too greasy or anything. The fish on the other hand was just kinda average, next time I go I'll probably skip it and go straight to the other stuff. read more

OK, the fish here beats out Famous fish spot on 145th. Here is the thing, CALL your order in ahead of time. The service is great. It's small spot with not a lot of room. They make everything fresh on the spot. So there is a wait. There is no precooked fish at ALL! I waited and watched them make it. If you don't mind waiting, I say place your order, walk around a bit, do some sightseeing. I had the seafood combo, with shrimp, fish and chips. Seasoned perfectly. and they will steam your vegetables! It's not bad if you are on your way home, to give them a call and pick it up when you get there. Omg I loveeee this place! It definitely has a place in my heart! I will miss it when I leave NYC. A bit of a hole in the wall but I think that's apart of it's charm. The people are friendly and there is usually good music playing. It has a Harlem feel that feels welcoming and homey. Only complaint is the wait for the food BUT I think they make it on the spot and there is only a few people working there. Definitely worth a try if you like seafood.
