I'm here primarily for the nordic ski facilities! But...since there is so much else here, might as well explorer it. I'll update this review as I experience more of the ranch. This last weekend, I visited the mercantile shop and cafe. I love the shop - it's full priced but has interesting and quality stuff for your impulse or emergency buying. The clearance box was good to me in there. The cafe on the other hand was an interesting story. Smaller than I expected, perhaps it's not really somewhere guests hang out. The service there was adequate but less than fabulous - perhaps the shoulder season is not the time to visit. I also saw that the ran out of supplies for some item while I was there - again shoulder season, very slow business. I'll update this review later in winter; I will be visiting more and hopefully staying at some of their facilities overnight. read more

Really pretty scenery/setting and facility is offset by the staff...a letdownat ANY price level--let alone a $400+ per night resort! Whether it was the waitstaff at the pool (slow, distracted) or the bartender at the restaurant (indifferent) or the host at Heck's Tavern (terse, hostile, snooty), or the chef in the kitchen (we waited 45 mins for our entrees), they disappointed us at every turn. glad we chose not to get married here last year...that would have been a $40,000 mistake instead of just $400! read more

My family and I went to Heck's restaurant for their new brunch. We found it outstanding! The eggs Benedict were perfect. The burgers worth calling your friends about. And the pancakes were light and tasty. Here's the kicker - the prices were less than I expected, and reasonable by anyone's standards. The service was wonderful. The wait staff never asked if everything was "Okay," they made sure it was. A great dining experience. I hope you'll take the time to drive out there and enjoy it for yourself. read more

There are so many wonderful things to say about Devil's Thumb Ranch. It sits on 5,000 unobstructed acres of jaw dropping gorgeous land. Mountains, streams, stables, wildflowers, yurts, you name it, they have it. The resort is first class without feeling pretentious. It is a cowboy setting for sure, with old barbed-wire in picture frames down the halls, cowboy boots as decoration, and wood and stone everywhere. The lodge rooms are quite large and comfortable. It is nice being in the lodge because there is so much going on there - from complimentary meditation and yoga classes in the morning, to smores by the fire-pit at night. If you have a few people going together, the cabins are spectacular. About a 10 minute walk to the lodge, the cabins are more secluded. The four bedroom Carago Cabin that I stayed in had a full kitchen, two fire-places, and a large outdoor deck. We really enjoyed the land outside our cabin too - it made for the perfect spot for our corn-hole tournament! I was surprised at how good the food is - we were there for a wedding and cooking for 140 people doesn't necessarily bring out the best in a kitchen - but these guys were spot on! I'm anxious to go back - sans wedding - and try the food again. I can only imagine how much better it will be... The lodge is also green, green, green! The entire place, including the pool is heated geo-thermally. They have their own waste-water treatment plant on site, recycle everything they can, use all natural cleaning products, etc, etc, etc... The whole time I was at Devil's Thumb Ranch, I couldn't help but think that I would be back - and soon. I thought about all my friends and family from out of town that I would love to bring here - it's that special. read more

I've been skiing at Devil's Thumb since the early 80s. Always my favorite in the area --- Snow Mountain Ranch takes second. The views are amazing. From the central meadow, you can see the Continental Divide and the eponymous Thumb; several of the hills have nice views across the valley. Best trail choices: Waxwing and Marker Hill for classic on hills; Black 10 for a long, fast workout; Kestrel and Swindler for a ramble between old barns with a snack break at a yurt. Over the last few years, the classic-only trails have dwindled --- some grown over, some cut wider for skating. I guess I've started skating over the last few years, so I'm part of the problem. Rancher Bob is still excellent, though. The rental & gear shop is pretty reasonable (mostly Salomon boots; classic, skating, and light BC gear; good Swix / Ibex / Patagonia clothing selection). Pulks and skijoring (dog-propelled skiing) gear also available to rent. Grooming can be a little lackadaisical during / after a heavy snow --- if you can't see across the meadow, you might be better off with kick-and-glide. Give them a day of sun, though, and they'll have excellent smooth corduroy for the V1 / V2 crowd. You'll have to ask someone else for opinions on the new spa, but for the skiing --- you can't beat Devil's Thumb. read more

I have to agree with Angel here, DTR is fantastic. I've shot two weddings up here and when it came time to eat the food was fantastic. The barn is a great place for a reception. I've done a summer and a winter wedding there and both were fantastic. Here's to more weddings at the Devil's Thumb Ranch for me! I would love to stay here as a guest, the cabins look really nice. read more

Can't explain my obsession with this place. Lodging is literally perfect. Beds, bathrooms, porches, living rooms, etc - EVERYTHING. Restaurants / food / drinks are perfect. Spa is amazing. Grounds are gorgeous (this place is huge but you'd never know it). Staff is incredible. Even if you're not doing a spa treatment, pay the $20 for the day pass and use the steam room, sauna, hot tub, aromatherapy room and showers - you won't regret it! Their stables and staff are top notch. A trail ride is a must do and you don't have to stay at the Ranch to book one. Great, informative, fun, gorgeous ride! I'll be back! read more

Recently stayed at the DTR for a close friend's wedding. When they first decided on the location for the wedding I tried to understand what the draw of a resort in the middle of the woods was. After a few days at the ranch I couldn't believe I'd never heard of the place and have every intention of going back! The main lodge is rustic but luxurious, the staff is extremely attentive and accommodating, and as mentioned in other reviews the view is jaw dropping. There is no shortage of activities at the ranch! Yoga, horseback riding, a movie theater, game room, mountain biking, and the list goes on. Often times a wedding is on the boring side for small children, but DTR is more like paradise. I couldn't get over how much fun the kids where having (not my kids). For the first part of our stay we were lodged in Blue Sky, a 4 bedroom cabin. The beds were unbelievably comfortable and amenities of the cabin were so normal that you immediately felt very at home. In fact the bride's parents invited everyone to their cabin for a home cooked meal and drinks. The flawless silence was only interrupted by horses and the occasional 4 wheeler making it's morning rounds to water the plants. Other noise disturbances probably including US as our cabin was the groomsman's cabin. No one ever complained though. The wedding its self is tops in my mind. Every detail was perfectly appointed by both the lodge and the bride and groom. The whole night was a huge hit and after tons of toasting, laughing, dancing, and eating the bride dove into the outdoor pool closely followed by the groomsmen. Perfect. After the stunning wedding ceremony and reception on Saturday we moved down into the main lodge for a night. The rooms in the lodge a slightly more modern, but only slightly. The one thing it had that I would have killed for in our cabin was a full length mirror. Anyway, while nursing a wedding hangover we lounged by the pool and played air hockey. It was the perfect way to decompress prior to leaving the Ranch. My husband and I had an early check out of the main lodge (I'm talking 3:30am) to make a flight out of DIA (poor planning on our part). As we sleepily carried our luggage through the main lobby the wonderfully attentive front desk employee offered us fresh coffee and croissants. That was the icing on the cake for sure. Can't wait to go back in the winter when we'll rent out another cabin with friends and relax in those beautiful mountains with some snowshoeing, snowboarding, and home cooked food in our cabin kitchen. read more

If I could add 5 MORE stars to this review I absolutely would! My husband and I recently got married here on Dec 15, 2013! We came with 5 others from Austin, TX to celebrate the occasion. Let me begin by saying how ABSOLUTELY AMAZING Lindsay, the wedding coordinator is. Lindsay was on top of everything since the day I first inquired! Since we don't live in Colorado, of course there was a lot of concern, not being able to check out the facility prior to our visit... But I had no business worrying!! Lindsay assured us that the facility is too notch in service and beauty... And she was NOT lying! Lindsay also put my husband and I in a deluxe suite for the ENTIRE stay at the rate of a standard room!! She also sent us photos of the snow occasionally to help us get even more excited! The food was OUTSTANDING!! 5 star dining if you ask me! A little pricey, but totally well worth it! And the horse drawn sleigh ride was a PERFECT experience for the 7 of us! If your looking for a place to get married, DTR IS IT!!! You won't disappointed! read more

This is not a place you want to stay in terms of value!! You will be quite disappointment from the moment you check in. We brought our concerns up with the hotel management Jordan Murphy and we were provide excuses rather than resolutions. We thought it would be a peaceful get away and it was quite the opposite. From swimming in the pool while the wall was getting jack hammered to an all night drunk fest wedding party. After several attempts to quite the party down we ended up just leaving. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY AT THIS ESTABLISHED AND TO BOOT MANAGEMENT DOES NOT CARE BUT WILL GIVE YOU MANY REASON AND EXCUSES. read more

I have not even checked in yet and I'm disappointed. I have NEVER in my years of living in Colorado and traveling the world been charged for my ENTIRE stay before I even set for on the premises. I hope that this place delivers for my friends wedding and better be worth the 800$+ I'm spending before I even see my room for this severe payment policy to get off my nerves. Honestly I'm insulted by this place already. read more

Awesome place! the rooms are quiet, well decorated. awesome open shower. has a decent gym and pool. the food at all the restaurants are awesome!! The drive to get out here from denver airports about 2 hours so you have to rent a car. However its totally worth it. the only thing i have to say that kind of sucks is there is no water in the rooms or near by. you have to go to the main house and purchase water and in the mountains you easily get dehydrated. i made a lot of trips to get drinking water. read more

I was extremely disappointed with this resort. The staff was rude, the food was terrible and not having any cell service is unacceptable. When I complained about the lack of service I was advised to add WiFi calling to my phone. That is a service that is at an additional cost, and I would need to contact my service provider to complete. That was not possible since I had no way to contact the provider. Additionally, I was at the resort for an event. I arrived before the regular check in time and my room was not ready. The rooms for the event were in a block, and the block was for a significant amount of rooms. Only certain rooms were ready early. All of the rooms in the block should have automatically had an early check in. The staff confirmed my phone number and advised I would receive a text when my room was ready. I asked how that was possible since I had no cell service. Instead of answer, I was advised to sit by the pool for a couple of hours until my room was ready. After traveling over 6 hours by plane and car to get to the resort, that was just insulting. The only positive aspect of the resort is the view it provides. read more

Much about Devils Thumb is excellent. It's a large and beautiful property with great activities (zip line, biking, fishing, horseback riding, etc) - all with incredible views. There is a large network of buildings which provide a range of experiences. The landscaping is well thought out and I appreciated the environmentally conscientious elements ( solar panel, care for the land, etc). The pool was delightfully warm and the hot tub and spa were not crowded. Devils thumb took a few short cuts, which I found surprising. While many of the spaces including the room are well appointed, I found it off that the hallways have some are work that repeat over and over. The pieces are unique, so they really stick out when you see them every 15 feet! Also I was really disappointed by some of the finishes. For $500+ a night I wasn't expecting to use a plastic Delta shower, a Gerber toilet and cheesy fake-looking copper sinks. It feels strange to take a big step down on these details vs what I have at home for this price. As for the staff, they try very hard and some are excellent however the consistency is lacking. Last, we were surprised that our room was in the shadow of a wedding without prior notice. Honestly the biggest issue was the staff bumbling along in a loud manner. It seems like the rooms overlooking the wedding should be given to the wedding guests, no? Overall Devils Thumb is a great destination, especially for someone who is active. It feels however a bit overpriced given the details. read more

The location is gorgeous and I enjoyed the lodge very much (though the cottages look really cozy!). The food at the ranch restaurant was pretty good (but not in the cafe ) and the pool was beautiful! However, it is also important to me that the places I support demonstrate that they have good values and I was totally turned off when I saw how the housekeeping boss treated her staff. I also saw her put the contents of recycling bins straight into the trash (of course, lots of places don't recycle (unfortunately) but my issue is more with the fact that the resort advertises as 'green' but isn't). The service in the restaurant and housekeeping was just ok. I usually take mediocre service as a sign that the staff aren't paid very well. Also I like to see a place supporting its locals and not taking advantage of cheap labor . This place is certainly beautiful and I'm sure many guests enjoy themselves, but there are plenty of other gorgeous spots in the mountains and I'll find another with more heart. read more

Excellent XC area, the best nordic center I have visited in Colorado. Devil's Thumb has over 100K of trails to ski, with a variety of trails to suit your interest and skill level. Seriously, read that: over 100km of trails! And not just a bunch of side-by-side trails on the flats. They have nice, open flats for mellow ski action and practicing technique, narrow tree runs, fun rolling terrain, and more steep, techical stuff, most with great views of the Indian Peaks. Once you ski away from the lodge, you really do feel like you are just skiing along a path. Snow is... well we do live in Colorado... They can get freeze-thaw action and conditions can change throughout the day, esp. in late winter. I usually count on good snow though. They do a Classic track and a Skate lane and DT staff seem to work hard to get trails in shape each day. Most trails are pretty wide, wide enough to accommodate Skate and XC traffic and two-way traffic without causing friction. Some of the more technical runs are smaller and you do need look out for down-hill traffic, but that's OK, XC isn't about bombing down runs with reckless abandon. Share the Piste! I ski Classic XC and have a blast every time I go; I see a lot of Skate on the trails, too. Considering the amount of varied terrain, Devil's Thumb must be a Skate paradise. They also have snowshoe-only trails. DT has a ski lodge, I just buy my ticket, I don't shop; however, they do offer rentals including those sled things you tow the kids around in. I think they offer lessons too? The lodge offers lots of other amenities, restaurant, bar, pool, sauna, camp fire, skate rink, horse-drawn sleigh, etc... They frequently seem to have planned some sort of casual event or party. I go several times a year, and I have a great time each time, and I always wonder why I don't go more often. My only complaint is that the drive over the pass from Denver is really a pain. However, the XC at this place is worth it. read more

Enjoying a bottle of wine on the patio at Devil's Thumb must be similar to what Zeus experienced sitting atop Mt Olympus! The continental divide looms just above and the sunsets here are nothing short of fabulous! This is one of the most peaceful and beautiful areas that I have ever been. Highly recommended for a weekend getaway from Denver or a stopover for a few nights on a mountain trip. As others have said, the Ranch House serves local and organic ingredients from Grand county and the surrounding areas. I had a wonderful strawberry and wild greens salad that was sourced from a farm less than 5 miles away. The other offerings are good: local trout, steaks and some vegetarian offerings. The time we dined here my steak was superb and everyone else seemed to enjoy their meals as well. Be prepared to slow down upon arrival, time seems to stop at Devil's Thumb, relax and enjoy it! read more

I live in Tabernash this summer and we are always looking for fun things to do in the afternoons. We have started going to Devils Thumb for their happy hour food and drinks and we are loving it. Good prices, really nice waiters, lots of interesting people. My only complaint is that the staff often seems like they are overwhelmed, which makes sense but part of the business is pretending you're not even when you are! I would recommend this for a great happy hour- beautiful view- afternoon treat. read more

Devil's Thumb Ranch - Fireplace and Devils Thumb - Resorts Near Me - Tabernash, Colorado

HOTEL: 5 STARS Lots of hotels jump on the eco-green bandwagon but it is usually all green-washing marketing BS with a few herbal shampoos and soaps in recycled paper boxes. Not Devil's Thumb. They are the real deal. From salvaged beetle wood lumber to geothermal heat, to the fact that they saved this property from being turned into a condo-golf community, they are truly the most environmentally friendly lodging I have ever encountered. They give you five star service without a five star attitude. They staff are so friendly, wildly accommodating, and genuinely seem to enjoy working there. We stayed in the main lodge, but our room felt like we were in a secluded cabin. The bathtub was fantastic, the bed superb. We didn't want to leave. Also, since we were a last minute walk in they gave us a great rate. If you have the budget for a luxury get away, I cannot recommend this place highly enough. FOOD: 2 STARS Is the restaurant owned an operated by the same family that owns the resort? I wonder because it was a world of differences. Our only meal at the lodge was lunch at Heck's. It was extremely average. They had no veggie options on the menu but nicely offered to make me a sandwich with grilled veggies. It had no flavor. (I also had inquired about the soup and salad options at the small cafe down the hall and they said everything there was pre-made and not fresh -humm. Yuck). My partner had a pulled pork sandwich that was just so-so. The bread for both tasted like it came from a hospital cafeteria. I was also extremely disappointed that they boast fresh and local ingredients. When I asked if any of the meat was organic, the wait staff had no clue and gave a generic "it's all fresh and natural answer," which doesn't really mean anything. We asked them to ask the chef and the response was "nothing is organic but none of it has hormones." Again, this doesn't mean much. It is against the law (FDA regs.) to use hormones in chicken so does that mean you are serving Perdue or some chics from a farm down the street? The lodge seems to take environmentalism seriously, the restaurant on the other hand seemed just a a bunch of marketing speak. The couches, fireplaces, views, and service were great, but the food was so shockingly disappointing considering how much we loved the lodging experience. Also, a note to management - while we had fun eavesdropping on your 20 minute staff meeting and your new employee interviews, probably not a good thing to have them on the floor standing two feet away from customers. TMI. Over all - stay at this fantastic resort and eat elsewhere. read more

My husband and I visited in early February for his birthday. I cannot say enough good things about Devil's Thumb. The concierge reached out to me almost immediately after making the reservation to help plan our stay. He even arranged to have a bottle of wine in our room with a special birthday note. Making spa appointments and dinner and activity reservations was so easy. The spa is amazing - you have to try their special tea and ask for a glass of champagne after your treatment. My specialist had it ready for me when I walked out of my treatment. Such a treat! Make sure you take a dip in the hot tub and utilize the amazing steam and sauna, as well. We loved our dinner at Ranch House! The staff was so knowledgeable. The wagyu is fresh from the ranch and the wine list is extensive. Housekeeping was always quick and efficient. Can't wait to visit in the summer to take advantage of the pool and outdoor activities! read more

We live in Golden and have been coming to Devil's Thumb on the yearly basis for many years. Not only is the facility absolutely beautiful and well maintained, the customer service is impeccable. We recently asked them to postpone a reservation last minute due to wildfires, and the staff could not have been more accommodating and understanding in processing our request. In particular, Rayna, was awesome in helping us process our request and did such a wonderful job. We cannot wait to go back sooner than later. Keep up the good work team devils thumb! read more

Was so excited for our girl's trip but sadly underwhelmed with the service and our accommodations. First snow of the year and our heat was out for over 24 hours. I understand that this happens, however the staff was not very responsive and after they finally fixed it they offered space heaters. Would have loved to been offered that up front. We rented a private hot tub for an hour, the spa personnel called twice to see if we wanted champagne, cheese plate, etc. However they failed to tell us the most important part, that the jets were down and that we would basically be taking an expensive bath. At check out they offered to comp but took two phone calls with snippy staff to accomplish that. Had to keep calling for basic things, towels, toilet paper. Whatever, the scenery was spectacular and great hikes. read more

We took the whole clan up to the resort for Thanksgiving. My wife and daughter were able to go earlier in the day. When they got there she immediately texted me that the place was incredible and our room was fantastic. I was not disappointed. The bathrooms are incredible and my youngest kept begging to take continuous baths in the huge tub. There was an ice rink that was great to just get out and play on. I liked the pool area almost as much as the kids. The food was excellent and the waitstaff were always there almost before you needed something. At the bar, the bartenders were quite engaging and even though they were extremely busy, always took the time to check on us. One morning I went to the front desk to ask about the trails and Penne was so helpful and informative. My wife and I can't wait to return! read more

Wow- this is really one of the best hotel stays I've ever had. The only con I have (which really should account for maybe 1/4 star deduction, but I'm rounding up), is that the iced coffee at Hallowed Grounds was pretty awful, and one of the dishes we had for dinner (the fried chicken and dumplings) was off-putting due to a strange sweetness in the sauce. I think they were going for a curried style dish, but it missed the mark. But those moments are all erased when I think about everything this place has to offer. We only stayed for one night, but I definitely plan on coming back to partake in horseback riding and spa services! Even without those on this trip, the hikes, exploring the nooks and crannies of the ranch, star gazing from our balcony, and even petting the horses and chickens made for a really wonderful experience. The aesthetic of the ranch is straight-up gorgeous. The design is environmentally sound and a nod to the historic nature of the area. The toiletries are fancy, our room had a pebbled shower and a soaking tub, we had a view of the continental divide, and our bed was the most comfortable hotel bed I've encountered. There were s'mores at sunset and a giant game room that had electronic bowling, billiards tables, air hockey, tabletop shuffleboard, chess tables, and foosball. This place is pricey, but worth it in my opinion. So many places near the ski areas in Colorado are either worn down 80s-architecture or have the excessive tackiness of the early 2000s baked into the design. Not Devils Thumb, though- it's looks like an old park lodge but with all the comforts of a fancy resort. I can't wait to return! read more

What a disappointing experience with Crystal Testolin in the reservations department. My parents had been given a gift certificate because of a disruption in their previous stay. During the time the certificate was valid, my father was diagnosed with cancer and passed away. I stayed at Devil's Thumb Ranch (DTR!) for two nights April 10th-11th with my mom. We booked a two bedroom suite in the newly constructed (2014) High Lonesome Lodge. Overall, I am giving this 4 stars "Yay! I'm a fan." because we got a great rate on the room (30% off spring special), the accommodations were beautiful, and my mom and I had a lot of fun and did enjoy the spa. Pros - Beautiful location overlooking the continental divide, our suite was very well appointed, the spa is fantastic and reasonably priced considering it's a resort - spa includes sauna, steam room, "aromatherapy room" (scent diffuser in a small room to relax). There are lots of activities during winter and summer. Early April there wasn't much to do, we had our choice of archery or fly fishing, so we had an hour long archery lesson with Duncan who was fun and put up with my mom and I being goofs while we shot arrows at every location exception the target. Cons - Service does not match the price/amenities of the resort. I didn't have any truly memorable service with any of the hotel staff. After checking in were were given a map of the property, but the front desk clerk didn't tell us there was a more detailed map of the lodge we were staying in on the BACK of the paper... so we ended up going a completely awkward route to find our room, encountered locked doors, struggled up stairs that lead to nowhere...I felt like an idiot when I saw there was a map on the back. -Heck's restaurant had sub-par service. I may review Heck's separately but it really dampened our first evening. The resort and restaurant was mostly empty due to it being between off-season so I was expecting the BEST service due to the small number of guests. Unfortunately our meal was NOT coursed-out and our appetizers arrived with our entrees. The food runner put our appetizers on the table, then when I noticed he also had our entrees, I let him know we wanted them coursed out (because, duh) and to please re-fire the entrees when we were closer to finishing our apps. He seemed very frazzled and said our waiter didn't tell him to course it out (it's common sense!) and took the entrees back. He didn't apologize, or make any indication that we weren't causing him an inconvenience. No one knew what cheese was on our "local cheese plate" either, they had to go into the kitchen to check... C'mon guys. When we were ready for our entrees, he brought back the same food, they were not re-done. So my mac 'n cheese wasn't so hot anymore and my mom's chicken felt rubbery. I wouldn't dine at Heck's again - check out Deno's in Winter Park instead, we had great service/food there on our 2nd night. *I will visit DTR again if I can get a good rate on the room. I feel staff need to be rigorously trained in how to give memorable service - it needs to be more refined for the cost of staying at this resort. I am assuming they have a lot of turn over because it's likely seasonal work but service really makes or break your reputation* read more

We stayed one night at Devil's Thumb Ranch in January. We wanted to try nordic skiing and have a night away, and this seemed like the perfect place. The skiing was great, the scenery was beautiful, and our room in the lodge was well-appointed and very comfortable. If only I could stop my review there. We ordered room service. We signed a receipt for the food, after a weird/rude interaction with the person who brought it. All day it had seemed like the staff were over-extended, so we figured - whatever, maybe there's a wedding and not enough staff. I want to make clear that we're not people who stay in resorts often, so I'm not comparing level of service to other resorts, I'm telling you the staff seemed more stressed and less appreciated than the people at the front desk of a highway holiday inn. The next morning, we went by the desk to check out and make sure our balance was paid. We were told it was all good, and we went home. Three months later I get an email from devil's thumb ranch, threatening to send the account to collections because the room service charge was never charged. Really? You obviously forgot to charge the account three months ago, and now you're choosing to handle a mistake on your end by sending me a nasty email three months later? We called to speak to someone, wanting to understand what happened, and why we were only hearing about it now. I've had more productive and polite customer service calls with Comcast. Seriously, it was that bad. No explanation of what happened. No apology for an obvious error. Accusations that we were lying about not having been contacted in the last three months. And I'm supposed to feel comfortable handing over my credit card to this person? Honestly, if Jennifer is a manager, I really understand why her staff are busy snapping at guests and slamming doors. Bottom line: this is a beautiful location suffering from pretty awful mismanagement. Zero respect for guests. Avoid. read more

Terribly run business. Cannot believe they get away with charging so much for disappointing customers at every turn. Nobody ever answers the phone. Ever. Want to schedule a massage? Good luck getting a hold of anyone. Their list of activities is a joke. It was $164 for my wife and I to SNOWSHOE, and we were staying there! The service at Heck's moves at a snail's pace. I am writing this review for people who may be considering having a wedding at DTR. (I'm the bride). I'll start off by saying two positive things about DTR: The food was delicious and the setting is very pretty. I think *most* of our guests had a good time. That was not the case for those of us hosting the wedding as well as one guest. In the order of events: 1) When we arrived to check in, our rooms were not ready (even though we arrived at check-in time). In fact, as rooms started to become available, I (the bride) was the last one to be assigned a room. That meant, after a full-day of travel, I was sitting in the lobby for an hour as guests were arriving and getting checked in. Not exactly how you want guests to be seeing you for the first time at your wedding... 2) Our rehearsal dinner menus had the wrong names printed on them. 3) Our welcome reception (after the rehearsal dinner) was scheduled from 8pm--10pm. Well the bartenders and the bar weren't set up until 8:20pm so guests who arrived on time were standing around not knowing where to go or what to do. 3) I (the bride) was booted out of my room every night I was staying there (3 nights) even though I was told we would be able to reserve the same room. (Think of the nightmare of having to move all of your stuff throughout the hotel 3 different times). 4) An elderly couple who traveled to Colorado from New York for our wedding were kicked out of their room on their third night because the front desk told them they didn't have the 3rd night in their records. They were literally told to get out of their rooms and go find a hotel somewhere in Winter Park. DTR blamed the issue on having a new reservation system and some reservations being lost in the shuffle. That was incredibly embarrassing. I will say once DTR had our money, customer service went down the drain as well as any regard for attention to detail and making sure our experience was great. I don't even want to go back there for anniversaries because they left such a bad taste in my mouth. I am not a super demanding person at all, but for the amount of money this venue costs, they should be top notch and they definitely weren't. read more

I have been coming here for 9 years - the location is gorgeous, the skiing and biking are amazing, the building and decor are lovely. The food used to be mediocre to poor, but about three years ago something changed and now it's excellent. This is the thing: the service is horrible. So bad that I'm often grinding my teeth , so bad that I've been embarrassed to bring people here. There is no excuse for service this bad at a place that is meant to be a luxury resort. And it is bad all across the resort - Heck's, the Ranch House, the spa, the front desk. It's obviously a top down phenomenon. There's an attitude towards guests that is almost hostile, as though they are there to take advantage and must be fended off as firmly as possible. Examples: in Heck's, they want you to go thru the host to get a table. Fine. But on a Tuesday at 2pm, when the hotel is half empty and someone walks onto the vacant patio? Don't enforce this rule strictly! It's bizarre! A server could just politely say "I'll let the hostess know you're here and get you some menus." And when you do talk to the host, you have to sit at the podium for five minutes giving her a long list of information. Why? And the service is very often incredibly slow. There's really no excuse for this. At the Ranch House recently we sat down at the bar and were immediately told that we couldn't order food because the kitchen was too busy. (Everyone else at the bar was eating). When we asked if we could order at some point, we were grudgingly told we could order in 30 minutes. So unnecessarily rude; why not warn the guest that things are really slow right now and to expect some delay with food orders? And then when we asked for a drinks menu the response was "yeah, in a minute." And we sat for three or four minutes watching the bartender meander from task to task, ignoring us. Just as we were about to leave, the hostess walked by and we asked her, and she gave us the drinks menu. We also were treated to several conversations between employees making fun of other guests. ?! At the spa, I have made reservations only to be called later and told that they made a mistake and there were no bookings available. More than once! Once I spent ten minutes on the phone with the person, giving her my CC info and the names and info for my two friends, only to be told that, actually, there were not enough so rooms available after all. ?!?! I could give a dozen more examples. Please. Make fixing this a priority. Hire someone to train your staff. There is no excuse for this constant drum beat of infuriatingly bad service. read more

My husband and I went here for our 5 year anniversary and it was by far the WORST vacation we have ever had in our entire lives! The service at this place in unbelievable. In a bad way. We were constantly told conflicting things. The one thing we were most excited for was ice skating. I read about it online and saw brochures at the ranch. We asked what times ice skating were and they replied, "oh, it's out of season." Nowhere on their website did they say the ice rink was closed! So lame! Then, we went to the "activities center" which is really just one guy who doesn't know anything. We asked about hiking and he said you have to have a trail pass. For $18. Each. Just to walk on their property?! It should be free if you're staying at their ranch! We paid, but when we got back to the lodge, I overheard a person who worked there saying trail passes were being discounted to $5 each. My husband talked to one of the people who worked there about getting refunded and he basically said, "nope." I talked to another woman who worked there and she said that wouldn't be a problem. We went back to the activities center and supposedly got our refund. When we got home, not only did they charge us the original amount, but they also charged us another $10! We called them but nothing has been done yet. They said to check back in 3 days. Thanks. The trails were okay, but I don't know what we paid $30 for. The trails were NOT maintained. If you're going to charge someone to hike on their property, at least maintain it. After hiking, we wanted to go for a swim but forgot our swimsuits :( We went to the gift shop to buy swimsuits but they cost $90. Seriously...90 dollars for a swimsuit! Eff that! I just wore my dress and my husband wore basketball shorts. The pool was pretty cool, but there were dead bugs everywhere. Gross. We went to dinner at Hecks and it was a cute room. They had a fireplace in the middle and it had a nice atmosphere. Our waitress was very nice. I ordered the onion soup and my husband ordered the trout. The onion soup looked like pulled pork. It was disgusting. I had 2 bites and didn't have anymore. My husband actually liked his trout though, and the potatoes & green beans that came with it were heavenly. However, I had to fill up on bread since my soup was inedible. The rolls were doughy. :( We went back to the Bunkhouse where we were staying ($142 vs $350 in the lodge) and I thought it would be nice because it's $142 for a room. Not so much. The rooms are tiny. We got a room with a private bath and the sink is so close to the toilet that you have to squeeze through just to sit down on the toilet. The shower is also very tiny. The sheets were ok but the blanket was old and scratchy. Ew. When we went to bed, we could hear everybody's business. The walls are so thin, I heard everybody's alarm to wake up. At 6 a.m. Overall, it was a terrible vacation and we will NEVER go back. read more

Thanks to Evan, Jordan and the rest of the staff at Heck's Tavern for a wonderful 50th birthday celebration! They were so easy to work with and over the top gracious! We loved our cozy cabin in the woods and the Ranch service, scenery, food and amenities are top-notch. Our only complaint was the lack of pool lounge chairs available for us hearty Colorado sun seekers... late April isn't too early for a pool day and the concrete was feeling a bit hard. Thanks again to Devils Thumb Ranch for a wonderful weekend celebration! We will be back! read more

I completely agree with Rick M. I had my wedding there recently and had many issues with the staff and service. The venue itself and the lodge are phenomenal. The views are amazing, the decor is perfect, and the food was great but the service seriously fell short. My self and my husband are also extremely easy going people and it does not take a lot to make us happy but we were very disappointed in some of the aspects of our experience with Devil's Thumb Ranch. I have never written a bad review before but I do feel that my experience for my wedding of 33 guests warrants it. The rehearsal dinner went off without a hitch, however upon the arrival of the guests to their lodge rooms we had three different rooms that had welcome baskets for another wedding that was there the same weekend. It wasn't until the guests actually read the cards that they realized that the baskets were not for them only to have to bring down to the front desk to hand them in. The morning of the wedding while myself and my bridesmaids were getting ready in one of the rooms we called down to Heck's restaurant to order room service, numerous times, and got no answer. We had to have someone go down to the restaurant for us, order the food, wait, and then bring it up to the room. Come time for the final bill we were charged for the phone calls that never received an answer. During the cocktail hour I had several guests, as did the groom, come up to us and complain that they were not getting any food. In speaking with the guests days after the wedding I was told that one waitress was coming out with the food trays walking up to a crowd of people, serving one or two people and then walking back into the kitchen with a full tray, only to come back out five minutes later. My wedding planner requested that a plate be put aside for myself and the groom, which was not done. We both only had two pieces of appetizer from our own cocktail hour. The BEO was ignored in regards to how the soup and sandwich was supposed to be served. It was discussed and in the contract that the soup would be served in a small shot glass with the sandwich wedge placed on the rim. The soup was served in small mugs with the sandwich wedges pilled on top of each other on a napkin in the middle of the tray. The dinner went smoothly and everyone raved about the food. When dessert was served, I am almost certain that they left out half of my cake pops that I bought and gave to them to have them put out during dessert. Half of them were put on display by the baker and the other half was to be brought out to replenish what was taken. In talking to my bridesmaids they said that they did not see the other half taken out. What a waste of money! I also went to the bar three different times to find that the server was no where to be found. At one point I went in and there was a line of guests waiting to be served and the bartender was gone. For the amount of money that was spent on such a small wedding these issues are unacceptable. In Heck's the next morning the service was also poor. It took our waitress 20 minutes to get us a glass of apple juice for my crying nephew. The waitress only had 2 or 3 other tables and my sister asked twice for some juice, I then took it upon myself to ask her a third time, then ask the hostess, and then have to stand at the bar to ask them if they could just hand me a glass, to be told they would bring it right over, to then have to wait another 10 minutes for it. It really is a shame that the service is not up to par by any means. Overall, my wedding was fantastic but they have a lot of work to do to make it the perfect day it should be. My wedding planner has communicated most of these issues to the manager there and was told that she would present it to the other managers for review. Hopefully they will make some changes so that these things do not happen at other weddings. read more
